Built-In Shock Absorption for a Smooth Ride

Whether you're hauling construction equipment or you're carrying your ATVs to the mud park, towing heavy-duty loads can be an intense job. You definitely don't want to have to deal with sharp, jolting movement every time your trailer hits a bump. Driving over bumps, potholes, and uneven terrain causes road shock. This can result in a rough ride for you and your cargo. It can even potentially damage your trailer. The Spartan from Gen-Y Hitch is designed to absorb road shock at the connection point to create a safe, smooth, and stable ride. This is thanks to the internal construction of the coupler, which is similar to that of a torsion axle.

gooseneck torsion

Pivot points are built into this gooseneck coupler. This allows for movement between the base of the coupler, which connects to the ball in your truck bed, and the top tube of the coupler, which connects to your trailer. When your vehicle hits a bump, the base of the coupler will move up or down accordingly.

torsion

Built into the Spartan are tubes with inner bars that are surrounded by rubber cords. As the coupler's base rises or falls, these inner bars twist inside of the tubes, attempting to follow the base's motion. But the rubber cords prevent the bars from twisting too far. And as each bar turns, these cords compress to absorb the shock. This means that any shock experienced by your truck can be absorbed before it reaches your trailer, and the shock experienced by your trailer won't get transferred to your truck.

This type of shock-absorption system is easy to maintain. Just regularly apply grease to the built-in zerk to keep the components in working condition. No airbags to fill. No small parts to repair or replace. No hassle.

Offset Design Gives Extra Clearance When Towing

This Gen-Y gooseneck coupler has an offset design. The bottom of the coupler, where it attaches to the ball, is positioned 2-1/2" away from the coupler tube, which inserts into the outer tube on your trailer. This provides 2-1/2" of extra clearance, giving you more space between your truck cab and trailer when making tight turns.

Video Transcript for Review of Gen-Y Hitch Gooseneck Coupler - Spartan Shock Absorbing Gooseneck Coupler 30K - GY96PR

Hi, everybody. Andy here with etrailer.com. Let's take a look at this Gen-Y Spartan shock absorbing gooseneck coupler. Now, this shock absorbing design is going to ensure a nice smooth and steady ride. and this is going to be much more comfortable for your horses and for yourself when you're towing your horse trailer. This is going to take the strain off of your equipment.

It's going to help it last longer. And this is going to be a great option for you to consider for your current setup to improve the overall ride and your comfort as well. Now, this does have a sturdy four inch in diameter inner tube that's going to slide into your existing outer tube that you already have on your horse trailer. By the way, this Spartan coupler is taller than a standard coupler, so it is important to measure the distance from the bottom of your current coupler to the retaining pin just to make sure that this is going to work for your application. So, this is very robust.

This weighs about 135 pounds. I needed help to get it on my table, so it's probably gonna take at least an additional set of hands to help you lift this up and hold it into place as you are getting the pin passed through. But as you can see, it does have these adjustment holes to accommodate your outer tube with pins in different positions so you can get this passed through and set up the way that you need it for your particular application. Now the coupler socket is going to secure to your standard 2 5/16 inch hitch ball. This self-latching coupler is going to automatically engage when the hitch ball is in its socket.

And then this included snap latch pull rod is going to allow you to easily uncouple from the outside of your truck bed. So this is gonna be very easy to get this connected securely to your ball, and then just as easy to disconnect it from your ball when you are done towing. Now this is made here in the USA of a heavy-duty steel construction. If you're not familiar, Gen-Y does have a great reputation of building very solid, very robust products. So this is going to be no exception to that.

This is going to give you a gross towing capacity of 30,000 pounds with a vertical load limit, or maximum tongue weight rather, of 6,500 pounds. And this shock absorbing design works like a torsion axle. So at the pivot points, we're gonna have inner square bars and then rubber cords on the sides. So as the coupler base rises or falls, the inner bars are going to twist inside of the tubes inside of this attempting to follow the base's motion. But those rubber cords are going to prevent these bars from twisting too far. And as each bar turns, the cords on the inside are going to compress to absorb the shock. So what this means for you is that any shock experienced by your truck can be absorbed before it reaches your trailer, and the shock experienced by your trailer won't then get transferred to your truck. One of the really nice things about this design is there's much fewer moving parts that could go wrong that would need to be repaired or replaced. You won't have that with this. Unlike other shock absorbing designs that use an airbag, you're not gonna have to worry about adding air or taking air out. This is basically going to be a set-it-and-forget-it kind of thing. So once you get this installed, it's just gonna automatically help absorb that shock and make it a much smoother ride for you, and again, help reduce the wear on your equipment. Now this Gen-Y gooseneck coupler has an offset design. The bottom of the coupler where it attaches to the ball is positioned 2 1/2 inches away from the coupler tube which is going to insert into the outer tube of your trailer, as we mentioned before. So this is going to give you 2 1/2 inches of extra space or clearance, giving you more space between your truck cab and trailer when making those tight turns. So, as I said, (steel clanging) a very sturdy steel construction. This is gonna hold up really well for you. This does have a powder coat finish that's going to resist wear and corrosion, so it should last you a long time. One other option, or one other thing I wanna mention to you rather, is the Infiniterule lock for Gen-Y hitch snaplatches. This is designed to work with this Spartan shock absorbing gooseneck coupler. And this is just going to be a way to secure this so you won't have to worry about someone trying to steal your trailer or anything like that. This is just a way to protect the investment that you're gonna be making with this shock absorbing gooseneck coupler. So if you're interested in taking a look at that lock, take the part number that you see there on your screen, pop it in the search field of our website, that will take you to that lock and you can add that to your order. Well, I think that's gonna wrap up our look today. I do hope that our brief time together was helpful for you. Again, my name is Andy. Thank you for joining me.

E trailer customer service stayed in contact with me through the entire process.

It took a few weeks to be delivered but I was in no hurry so plan accordingly.

The Spartan hitch was as advertised.

The only negative feed back I have is that the neck pin didn’t have a shoulder so it would go all the way through the holes. I use my existing through bolt anyway so I didn’t need it. Again plan accordingly. Not to be confused with the ball hitch pin. I’m strictly speaking of the slide neck adjustment pin.

Overall very pleased with etrailer and gen y.

This seems to be an excellent upgrade to the coupler on my Belmont trailer. Less than 100 miles on it so far but the trailer seems to jerk the truck around less on these fine Pennsylvania roads. It is helpful to have an extra pair of hands when installing. The powder coating made the tube on the coupler a little thicker than the original. I used a wire brush and some spray lithium grease on the inside of the trailer tube and was able to install the new coupler just by working it back and forth with minimal powder coating coming off. My trailer is registered at 9,999 lbs which is why I went with the 3.5k TW option. Haven’t had an opportunity to put a machine on the trailer yet to see if that was wise or not but a load of 18 - 6”x6”x12’ pressure treated beams barely moved the indicator. After my first trip I opted to change it to using the hole closest to the coupler as the trailer had a little too much angle back towards the last axle. Even in the bottom hole I still have 9” of clearance between the top of my tailgate on my Ram 2500 and the trailer.

I don't see how I lived without this. We often experienced a "bucking" when crossing bridges or even on certain roads with expansion joints. We were getting bounced around so much I can't imagine how our horses survived. This product has removed that completely. It also provides a slight offset if you have a shortbed. I have an 8' bed, but welcome the extra space between my tailgate and the trailer. Well worth the money! I will never tow a gooseneck trailer again without this.

by:

The difference is substantial! I won’t say you can’t tell the trailer is back there but the ride comfort is outstanding!!!!

by:

With my trailer which is only a 6 k trailer I bought the 7.5k hitch yet empty it is maxed out wish there was a way to adjust

by:

Great hitch ... love the adjustability of the hitch to match height of different trailers i pull since i hot shot and do power onlys also

by:

Holes in hitch don’t line up with the hole in tube on my 2018 MAXXD Trailer. With holes lined up the hitch is offset towards passenger side of truck. Was really looking forward to working this hitch. Very disappointed

I have a 2020 Silverado Custom Trail Boss 1500 and I pull a Shadow 2 horse slant gooseneck with 9' LQ and a bump out. The Trail Boss has a 5'9" box so the gooseneck is rather close the the cab. I bought the Gen-Y Spartan shock absorbing gooseneck coupler with 5" offset and it makes a huge difference pulling down the road. We have hauled the horses from MN to ND, MT, WY, CO, KS, NE, IA and back and have nothing but great things to say about the Gen-Y coupler. It is a must!

by:

Definitely rides better when the trailer is loaded. Only issue I have is that it increases the hitch height (my truck is lifted), but that's just the nature of the beast. Hopefully it hold's up to the Arizona sun.

by:

Quick Service! Only one problem the GEN Y doesn’t match up on my Liberty Trailers gooseneck retaining pin holes not basically they are an inch off forcing my trailer to be off had to bring it to a machine shop for proper alignment.

by:

the product works great just be sure to order the correct weight rating for the loads you intend to haul. if you only haul 10,000 lbs. get the hitch for that rating. even though you can haul 15,000 lbs. you won't get the benefit of the flex if your hitch has a gross tongue weight that is too heavy. other than that, it's a great product.

by:

just as i expected. fits great and easy to install.

the young man in the video must be very strong, cause it took some umph to get the tube inserted and pin put in by myself. but hey, this fat old man got'er done!!

by:
