Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

  • Recommendation to Replace 20.5x8-10 Tires on Trailer
The modern equivalent to your existing 20.5x8-10 size tires is a 205/65-10 like the excellent Kenda Trailer Tire with 10" White Wheel # AM3H460. This will really be a direct replacement and it features the same diameter/height of 20-1/2 inches as your current set. This particular tire and wheel combo has a maximum load of 1,650 pounds at 90 psi and the white steel wheel features the needed 4 on 4 bolt pattern to match your hubs (based on the picture you attached). The next largest tire...

  • Spare Tire Needed For A 155/80R13 Tire Size
Hey John, It looks like we don't offer that specific tire size so we wouldn't be able to offer you just a spare. If you wanted to switch out your wheels/tires completely and get an extra spare then the closest option with a 4 on 4 wheel bolt pattern would be the 175/80R13 which is 24.02" in diameter and 6.89" wide compared to your current 22.76" diameter and 6.10" width. If you wanted to go this route so that you would need to check your clearance from the wheels horizontally to the...

We have tires in that size mounted to wheels. If you need a 4 on 4 inch bolt pattern you would want the part # AM30780 or if you have a 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern you would want the # AM30820.

  • Looking For Replacement For SL305 155R12c 83/81Q Tires
Hello Gerianna, thanks for reaching out. So I do have a potential option for you, but we actually do not carry the SL305 155R12c 83/81Q tires. Our closest option would be a 5.30-12 Bias Trailer Tire like part # AM30780. These are about 5.6" wide and 21.9" in diameter. The 155R12c tires are about 6.2" wide and 21.4" in diameter. So the 5.30-12 tires will be a bit less wide, and a bit larger in diameter. It looks like you have plenty of clearance in your fender area so these will be a...

  • Can Trailer Wheel and Tire Size 4.80-8 be Replaced with 5.30-12
Yes you can go to the larger wheel and tire size of 5.30-12 that you asked about. For a 4 lug wheel version we have the part # AM30780 which would work great. This has a higher speed rating of 81 mph.

  • Trailer Modifications and 8 inch to 12 or 13 inch Tire and Wheel Upgrade Recommendations
To upgrade to a larger tire you will have to upgrade to a larger wheel as well, and with that in mind you will want to make sure that the bolt pattern of your new wheel and tires match the existing bolt pattern on your current trailer. I have included a helpful article explaining how to determine the bolt pattern of your existing wheels. Depending on the existing bolt pattern on that your trailer is currently set up for I recommend the following: 4.80-12 - 4 on 4 bolt pattern # AM30620;...

  • What Tire Pressure To Use In The Kenda 5.30-12 Bias Trailer Tire On A Pop Up Camper Of 1,200 Lbs.
You should use the tire pressure that is recommended by the manufacturer of the camper. If they do not have a recommended tire pressure then I would recommend to use the maximum psi that is listed on the Kenda 5.30-12 Bias Trailer Tire, # AM30780, which is 80 psi. Trailer tires are designed differently than passenger car tires and truck tires. Trailer tires are made to be able to carry a heavy load at all times, so you will want the maximum pressure in the tire. On passenger and truck...

You will want to make sure you have at least 3 inches of clearance from the top of the tire to the bottom of the fender, but if you have the ability to modify the fender, this should not be much of an issue. You can also stick with the 4 on 4 bolt pattern if you like, but swapping that to the 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern will allow for even more options. • Can 8 inch Trailer Wheel be Replaced with 12 inch Wheel and Tire
Trailer hubs that a 8 inch wheel can also fit a 12 wheel so yes you could upgrade to the larger wheel size. So you could use a 5.30-12 tire and wheel like the part # AM30780. The pilot diameter would be large enough to fit over the hub pilot. Since the wheel actually centers on the lug nuts and not the hub pilot it wouldn't be an issue.

  • Recommendation Replacement Tire for ST155/80-R13
A 5.30 X 12C tire is going to be your best replacement. If you need the 4 on 4 inch bolt pattern # AM30780 is a good option, or # AM30820 for the 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern. These both have the wheel and tire included, which you'll need, since you will be decreasing the size of your rim. The reason I suggest going with the 12 inch rims is because the smallest 13 inch tires available, such as # TTWTRTM1758013C, are 175/80R13 which is quite a bit larger.
