Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

very beefy - i purchased it as a spare but puts the existing wheels and tires to shame

We just installed our new trailer tires. Carol from etrailer was extremely helpful on making sure we received our tires in time for our trip.

These tires look and fit perfectly on my "new" 1970 Coleman CT480 Pop-up camper. I gave the rating a four due to the fact that I have yet to test them out on the road since we are still in the process of remodeling "Lenny". The ordered arrived three days after we placed the order and in great packaging. This is the second item we have ordered from etrailer and will continue to order from them.

I ordered two of these Kendra 5.3012 tires with 12" White Wheels for a small utility trailer. I am upsizing from the original 4.80-8" as I'll be driving more highway miles with this trailer. The shipment arrived a day earlier than was promised (great!). The tire/wheel combo arrived in good condition packed inside a cardboard box. I am pleased with the quality of items. The tires look better than I expected and they should serve my needs well.

Covid has made things tough for all.  I have a high paced job and need vacations!  I own a small popup trailer and blew out an old tire on my way home from my last trip.  I have another trip coming up that I paid for for my father for father's day since we couldn't hang out that day.  I failed to realize that there was a Monday holiday that could delay my shipment of new wheels and tires.  I called eTrailer's customer service and spoke with Montrell.  He was amazing.  He followed through, got the items shipped that day, left me a message letting me know, he didn't miss a beat.  eTrailer has been so wonderful.  You have earned a customer for life!  Being able to get out tomorrow with my 80 year old father means more than you will ever know.  Thank you Thank you Thank you.  I received my order and it's perfect!  My man Montrell saved what's left of my broken covid spirit!

Mounted these on my old boat trailer and they fit perfectly. I needed to replace the old 13" original tires & rusty rims.
This was a great buy and cost less than just replacing my old tires and I would still have my rusty and leaking rims. Thanks!

We just got these so not sure how they will wear yet but they arrived in a nice heavy box and thus were well protected during shipping. Tires and wheels look just as advertised however they show as "LoadStar" on the side and not "Kenda". However looking at the Kenda website it's clear that LoadStar is a brand made by Kenda as its shown prominately on their website.

Other products ordered with the tires were placed safely in the properly sealed box as well as a bonus included. Very happy so far and great shipping, thank you!

These tires and wheel assemblies are SOOOOO much better then the OEM ones that came with my trailer. The tires have a better weight capacity @ a lower max PSI which means less bounce; I went a size larger then the OEM and will see better bearing wear do to the decrease in RPM and I can now travel @ 65 MPH vs 55. The wheels have a better finish with the lug nuts having a much better fit resulting in no more wobble. And the customer service was the best I have ever had. I WILL be back and will highly recommend to all of my buddies.

Nice heavy wheels; deep tread on tires. Attractive on camper. Hope they last as good as they look!

Well satisfied.from Nebraska to Alaska with no problems

Tires look great.

Needed new tires for my small trailer, Had a use for the old wheels and tires, so decided to get a pair with a matching spare set of wheels and tires. eTrailer had the best price and I have bought from them before. Super fast shipping, wheels and tires arrived in perfect shape. Good bunch to turn to when you need trailer supplies.

Incredible shipping timing and product as promised. Excellent experience!

Greg was great to work with. I'm new to etrailer..I ordered 4 different items at different times & he was able to capture all items in one shipment. Items arrived well packaged and on time. I will be ordering a lot more from etrailer...I do wish your cart system could be improved as i keep several items in the cart not all wanting to be ordered at the same time. Maybe i'm missing something however, not being able to order some items but not all from the cart would help.

I received this set of tires 2 days after I made my order which is extremely fast. The packing they were delivered in was perfect. These were also the exact tire and rim that my local “supply” store carries for $78.99ea however they only kept one in stock, their loss. will get all my orders when it comes to trailer needs, thanks

Tires work well on my pop-up camper. Delivery was timely and no issues 1 year later!

Received tires in 3 days, fast shipping and exactly what I ordered. Will continue to purchase from etrailer for future purchases.

Pleased with everything including the product, ordering, shipping and communication. Will definitely buy from etrailer in the future.

Excellent shopping experience due to the reasonable price and free & fast shipping. I will shop at etrailer for my future needs, and recommend etrailer to my family and friends.

have used regularly for a year with no issues or concerns. I would buy again.

Tires still look great - no dry -rot and plenty of tread.

Great tires, haven’t had any issues with them.

Brandon F.

Tires have held up great after a year! Very happy with these tires!

You guys did a excellent job, my order was processed and ship right away. I was impressed when my tires showed up two days early.

Thank you

Great product with a great price. Yes, I try to go local whenever possible, but if you can wait a week and save $ why not wait. I did and saved with a good product.

Great with what they do. my order came about a week earlier than what It said will definitely use this company again

Tires are great, no problems and still in use

  • How to Determine if Replacing 5.70-8 Tires and Wheels with 5.30-12 on a Camper Trailer is Possible
Your current wheel and tire size has an overall diameter of 18.1 inches. The size you are looking at, 5.30-12, has a diameter of 21.9 inches. If you have the room for the additional tire size and you get the correct wheel bolt pattern then what you are looking to do should work well. The taller tire should smooth out the ride a bit. The Kenda 5.30-12 Wheel and Tire # AM30700 that you referenced has a bolt pattern of 4 on 4. If you are unsure of the bolt pattern of your current wheels...

  • Replacement Wheels/Tires for a 1992 Jayco J-Series Pop-Up Camper
The best 5.30-12 wheel/tire combo we have for your 1992 Jayco J-Series Pop-Up Camper is the Kenda 5.30-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12" White Wheel part # AM30700. The Kenda tire has an 840 lb weight capacity per tire and a 65 mph speed rating. It also comes with a two year warranty. The Dexstar wheel has the 4 on 4" bolt pattern that you need and it has a durable white powered coated finish. The above should do an excellent job on your long, 10,000 mile trip.

  • Can Small Box Trailer have Wider Axle with Larger Diameter Wheel Tires Installed
Going with a taller wheel and tire will give you a bit more stability and will make trailer ride a bit smoother. It may not be a night and day difference but it will help. Going with a 5.30-12 wheel and tire like the part # AM30700 you mentioned would be a great option. Going bigger might make a bit of improvement but it's really up to you if that would be worth it. For picking out the axle you'll need to determine the axle capacity you'll want. Most likely a 2k axle would be your best...

  • Does a Replacement Trailer Wheel Center Pilot Hole have to be the Exact Same Size as the Old Wheels
Having a larger center pilot hole on a wheel is fine as long as the wheel secures to the hub using lug nuts. If the old wheels secure to the hub using bolts then that means the wheel centers on the hub with the pilot hole and you would need a wheel with the exact same size center hole. Take a look at how the wheel secures to the hub. If it uses lug nuts and the threaded studs are part of the hub, you can go with a wheel that has a larger pilot hole. All of the tire and wheel combos that...

  • Are Radial Trailer Tires Better than Bias Ply Trailer Tires for a Horse Trailer
Radial tires do track better and run cooler so I would say that going to radials would be a good idea. A trailer tire by itself like # AM10303 is rated for 2,830 pounds at 80 psi. The higher capacity tires will not increase the trailer capacity but since they are rated for more weight they ought to last longer. Trailer tires should always be inflated to the maximum psi as indicated on the tire. This is because trailer tires have a thicker side wall and if they are under inflated they will...

Currently all the wheel and tire combinations we have with the 5.30-12, and a 4 lug bolt pattern are going to have a 2.84" pilot hole center. This should not be an issue for mounting as these are all lug centric wheels which will center on your hub using tapered Lug Nuts # CE11051 and not the hole center.
