Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Beveled Stud Holes

Beveled Stud Holes Front and Back

The stud holes on this steel wheel are beveled to ensure that the wheel stays tight against your trailer hub. This also eliminates the need to constantly retorque the lug nuts.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Needed both new tires and wheels. These came already mounted, and slightly pressurized. Was told that balancing was not needed. Easily put on trailer and drove nice. No problems noted. Ordering was easy. Questions were quickly answered by customer service. Shipping was quick. Good company!

Have had tires and wheels on for one year. Holding pressure and rolling fine. No problems.

I have had use of one of the two tires I purchased at the same time since then and it is working perfectly. The rim is a little rusty but solid otherwise. It was worth the price as I shopped around for several days for them and the best price with shipping. Thank you!

Excellent. Has been in use over a year. Bought with rim. Durable for my 5x8 trailer and loads over 1,599 lbs at times.

After purchasing, and installation of the 2 Kenda 5.30-12 Tire W/12 White Wheels, 2 perfect fits, for my 1998 Tracker Trail Star boat trailer.I purchased these tires for my boat trailer because the tires on the trailer had small cracks due to the sun exposure. The boat is 16’2’’, and has a combined weight of about 1,380 lbs. The tires were very easy to mount, the ride while traveling on the interstate to the lake was smooth, and the handling on the boat trailer felt well secure at a high speed of 70mph. Overall I am very pleased with these tires. I also purchased two tire cover to put over the new tires, to preserve them from this Hot Atlanta, GA. sun.

Kenda Loadstar 5.30-12 Bias tire,LR C, with White Rim: Tires arrived in excellent boxes, on time. I was excited to see the tires were in good shape upon arrival. I cleaned them up, applied 303 on the whole rim and tire. An excellent choice of tire for my fishing trlr. These tire are a high speed tire, wider than the 4.80 tire and will wear very good in the desert heat. I ordered 3 tires, I won't have to worry about a flat for years to come. This is my second time I purchased tires from e-trailer, they have a vast line of products with good prices ,thanks e-trailer, I will return again.

I put two of these tires on a trailer that we use & abuse frequently and the tires have held up amazingly well. I've got probably 4000 miles on them and I'll easily get 2-3 more years off them. The price was great, delivery was fast and the tires are way above expectations. Can't go wrong with etrailer!

Comments
Another year, another 2000 miles on these tires and they still look brand new! Tread is a little worn, but no more than expected but the tires are still in great shape.

I needed new tires for my 13 yr old 5'x8' utility trailer. ETrailer had the right product (for some reason 5.30-12s are not that common in my area) and a good price which created the highest value from the various sources I found on the web and locally. I was very pleasantly surprised how well everything came packed. Very good experience.

Bought these to replace some trailer tires on my boat trailer in order to move my boat to my new home 800 miles away. They worked great, fast shipping, arrived in great condition!

This is a great product! I like that the tire is made of rubber for traction and stability, while the wheel is made of steel for structural integrity. As an added bonus, the tire came pre-filled with air! I put this on my boat trailer as a back up for the two that are currently attached to the axle. I hope I never have to use it, but it gives me peace of mind knowing that I could.

I inherited an old trailer with ancient tires, and with wheels that were starting to rust. I was looking for a way to make it usable, trustworthy, and to look decent, not trashy. These Kenda Loadstar tires, already mounted on wheels, were competetively priced. They compared favoritively to tires only, bought locally, and mounted on my old wheels, so I was able to keep the old tires and wheels as spares. I have used etrailer before and had good service from them, and always recieved quality products. My tires and spare tire mount came promptly, and well packaged. They look good and are excellent quality. I appreciated the free shipping since these were heavy items. I don't often take time to give reviews, but I will definately use etrailer in the future.

I must say, etrailer has the Best website and service I have ever had online. Even though I had chosen 1 incorrect tire of 2 different types, they helped me to get the wrong tire returned and quickly arranged for the right one to come. I am amazed by this kind of good service in a day when it's very rare. Much Thanks to Shery T. and George J. and the whole etrailer team. Bought a Haulin trailer at a yard sale needing some bed work, hitch repair and tires. Doing the bed work and hitch repair was easy; finding new tires locally reasonably priced was not. Got on your internet sight and found just the size I needed and with new rims which was a big plus! Order and delivery was great - with free shipping! Tires and rims quality are great also. I would definitely pass on the info. to others! Thanks for the products and great service!

Ask the Experts about this Kenda Trailer Tires and Wheels

  • Can Trailer Tire Size 20.5x8.0-10 be Upgraded to Taller Size
In the 10 inch wheel size the 20.5x8.0-10 that you have is the tallest size overall at 20.5 inch. If you wanted to bump up to a 21.9 inch overall diameter tire you could go to a 5.30-12 tire with something like the # AM30790 if you have a 4 bolt pattern or # AM30820 if you have a 5 bolt. This would be a narrower tire as well so there wouldn't be any risk of clearance issues with the trailer frame.

  • Recommended 5-Bolt 5.30x12 Trailer Tire/Wheel Combo
The Kenda Loadstar 5.30-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12" White Wheel part # AM30820 is my recommendation which has a 1,045 lb weight capacity. The tire dimensions are 21.9" diameter x 5.6" wide. They have a 65 mph speed rating. In regards to capacity, the total capacity of the tires won't always meet the weight capacity of the trailer as you still must subtract tongue weight.

  • Will the Pilot Hole Size on the AM30820 Matter If I Have Lug Nuts On My Current Hubs
As long as your current hub uses lug nuts, the pilot hole size won't matter and the # AM30820 will work just fine to replace your 5.30-12 tires. These are a bias ply tire with a Load Range C (1,045-lbs per tire). I've linked a review video of this combo for you to have a look at.

  • Can 4.80-12 Size Tire be Replaced with a 5.30-12 Size Tire
Most likely you can. You just need to make sure you have enough clearance under your fenders and between the sidewall and trailer since the 5.30-12 is about 1-1/2 inches larger in diameter and 1-1/2 inches wider. Make sure you have at least 3 to 4 inches under the fender and 1 to 2 inches from the sidewall to any part of the trailer. I noticed you looked at a bias tire, part # AM30820. One thing I recommend is that if most of your towing is on highways is to go with a radial. Part...

Keep in mind though that the higher capacity does not increase the capacity of the trailer. The issue you may run into though is with the wheels. I have included a helpful article explaining how to determine the bolt pattern of your existing wheels. Depending on the existing bolt pattern on that your trailer is currently set up for I recommend the following: 4.80-12 - 4 on 4 bolt pattern # AM30620;...

  • Recommended 5.30-12 Tires for 1997 Coleman Pop-Up Camper
First, I'd recommend confirming your wheel bolt pattern. Take a look at the FAQ article I've linked for you. You'll want to choose a tire whose load rating for two tires exceeds the fully loaded weight of your pop-up (including propane and water). We offer a 5.30-12 wheel/tire...

  • Parts Needed for Installation of Electric Brakes on a Coleman Pop-Up Camper With 8 Inch Wheels
The 8 inch diameter wheel on your Coleman Fleetwood pop-up camper is not large enough to accept an electric brake hub and drum assembly. Seven inch brake assemblies like # 23-48 that you selected work with the Trailer Hub & Drum Assembly, item # 8-257-5UC3, which will fit in wheels starting at 10 inches in diameter. You would need to upgrade your wheels and tires to either a 5.30-12 load range c wheel and tire combination, or a 205/65-10 load range c wheel and tire to meet the capacity...

  • Replacement of 5.30 x 12 Trailer Tires and Appropriate Trailer Tire Pressure Recommendations
Based on the information that you have supplied for your 5.30 by 12 Load Range C Tires (which have a maximum load rating of 1045 pounds), you are correct that these tires should be inflated to 80 PSI. Trailer tires should always be inflated to the maximum PSI stated on the tire, and should be inflated when they are cold. Special Trailer (ST) tires are designed to handle higher air pressure and have stronger sidewalls than passenger vehicle tires. These ST tires are expressly designed...
