Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: 8 on 6-1/2 means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: 5 on 4-1/2 means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance (D) from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Video Transcript for Review of etrailer Trailer Hubs and Drums - Hub - AKIHUB-440-2-1K

Today we're gonna take a look at the pre-greased trailer idler hub assembly for 2000 pound axles, with the four on four inch bolt pattern. Now this trailer hub assembly, will fit on a 2000 pound, idler axle with the BT8 spindles. This one's nice, it's a nice pre-greased idler hub assembly, so it makes it very easy to install. You don't have to mess around packing your bearings with grease. These that come all ready to go, and the grease they use, it's heavy duty grease for Marine applications. Now, this does include the inner and outer bearings.

All pre-greased , ready for installation. The bearing races are pre installed onto the hub, and let me just pop this off, and you can see there's the grease seal, that's already pressed in ready to go. It has these covers on it to keep the grease in there. Also includes the four 1/2 inch x 20 size lug nuts, and it gives you the two different grease caps.It gives you this standard closed center cap for a standard axle, and it also gives you the easy lube center cap. With the rubber center plug that can be removed to fit on easy lube axles.

So both of those will come with this kit. This idler hub is a sturdy iron construction. They do use a zinc enriched paint on it, to add durability, and is says QAI and CSA certified. Application again, this is for 2000 pound axles, with the BT8 spindles. It is compatible with standard and easy lube axles from most manufacturers, including Dexter, Lippert and AL-KO.

The bolt pattern I mentioned, is a four on four inch bolt pattern. Wheel stud diameter is a half an inch. The grease cap flange diameter on both grease caps, is 1.99 inches. And the weight capacity on this idler hub, is 1000 pounds. So when this is used with one on the other side of the axle, it'll meet your 2000 pound axle capacity. Now, the bearings that are included, the inner bearing is a part number L44643.

It has a one inch inner diameter. And the outer bearing is also the same part number L44643 with the one inch inner diameter. The grease seal that's installed in this as a part number 34823. It has an inner diameter of 1.25 inches. Outer diameter of 1.99 inches. But, that should do it for the review on the pre-greased trailer idler hub assembly, for 2000 pound axles, with the four on four inch bolt pattern.

Cheap price. Lightning fast shipping. Great product. The only thing that could make it better is if it came with the outer washer an cotter pin but no biggie. They're like 80 cents each so I could just run to the hardware storev an grab some. Fitment was spot on thanks dust cap was a little tough to get on but I just slbent the sides a little an she went right on. 615075

After toasting a set of bearings in my old hubs on a light boat trailer, I decided to go ahead and replace the whole set. My old hubs didn't have studs / lugnuts, so this was a great upgrade. Everything worked fine replacing on a BT8 spindle, except I had to replace the washer between the outer bearing and castle nut with a thinner washer. The SW1000 washer was too thick and wouldn't allow cotter pin to be installed. Would recommend to a friend! 464284

We purchase literally hundreds of these hub assemblies. We are a manufacturer of turf renovation machinery. We purchase the best equipment we can find at a competitive price. These units are consistently quality hubs, never a single unit that had any defects. You can easily spend twice the money and not gain anything for the extra money spent. Nice to have quality products, quick delivery and reasonable pricing consistently. 563766

For those who has the Harbor Freight 62645 (40-1/2? x 48?) utility trailer that has the .98**" shaft and 1.181" (30mm) seal shaft . Yes this is your hub, just need to replace the kit seal with a National 473426 seal. For my purpose, changing from the 4.80-12 4 ply to a 145R12 10 ply tires I used 1" 4"x4" wheel spacers. The wheel studs was to long, so I purchased and installed the (K12WB169) Kodiak Wheel Bolt - 1/2 Diameter X 1-7/10 Long. Perfect fit! This kit has a little bit heavier bearings, so the castle nut may have to filed a little bit to get the cotter in, due to the so called Chinese precision notches. No one locally have a replacement castles nuts. I will replace these a later when I find better quality ones. 471218

Great products and prices. These 3,500 lb brake drum/hubs appear to be well made and will be used to complete a new axle I've had a few years to construct a tandem axle trailer. I plan to order more of these for other axles as well. The 4 lug X 4" BC hubs are also well made and will be used on a hydraulic log splitter and small yard waste dump trailer to replace one-piece wheel hubs. This will allow me to use some surplus 8" tires on 4 lug wheels I have left over from some small trailer projects. 463326

The products were perfect and brought my 25 year old trailer back to new! The most wonderful part of the repair was talking to Carla at the help desk. I could not reach a comfort level as to which bearing/seal/hub kit to buy and she was exceedingly patient in having me measure mic clearances and direct me to etrailer's appropriate web sites so we could both see and talk about the same thing. Then, when I was 99% sure of the right kit, I expressed concern about one measurement that HAD to be correct or I would be shipping it all back. This was not available in the product description so she offered to go find the kit, get the measurement and call me back! Measurement confirmed! I ordered and have now installed. Carla went above and beyond.......thank you Carla and thank you etrailer! Joe in Oregon 573939

This was everything I needed to replace the bearings and hubs on a 4X8 utility trailer except the grease and cotter-pin. No issues with quality; no issues with parts not fitting. Everything I needed was in the box, and etrailer even had a useful video to show me how to replace it all. Total time to replace the hubs was about an hour, and most of that was packing the new bearings and cleaning off 30 years of grease from my trailer axles. No issues/ no problems. First rate product at an unbeatable price. 571289

Had a cracked hub on a kayak trailer build. Heard about e trailer and wow. What I needed I also had to pay shipping but even then the hubs was 20 a piece cheaper online and 30 a piece cheaper than local. These hubs was upgrade so I don’t have to fight bolts when putting wheel on. Great price and product. I am hooked on getting all my stuff from them in the future. They even threw in the quicker shipping with no additional cost to me. You can see what I had and got in the pictures 539155

Overall product quality is pretty good for the price , no issues with casting or bearings which is what counts . Dust covers are the usual stamped steel so there is a pretty good burr lip that needs a bevel to help start it inside the hub bore - just be aware of it and it makes the job much easier . I used these hubs to do a conversion on a garden tractor - going from very small lightweight ball bearing stamped style 1" inside flanged push-in type to trailer hubs and 8" - 4 bolt trailer rims - can't say enough about how much better this upgrade works and much more serviceable on my old Wheel Horse . For those running a loader on the larger garden tractors this upgrade is a must unless you like buying new wheel bearings constantly - this conversion will last a lifetime if cared for properly . E-Trailer is always great at answering questions and will help with dimensions if you ask - that is priceless in today's world of non-support retailers , wish other outlets would handle customer service like E-Trailer . I won't hesitate for a second to buy needed parts from these guys - good pricing , fast shipping and details that others won't take the time to include with product listings . Got my trailer brake controllers for both trucks , several other build parts to wire my trailer for a full 7-wire system including fused power feed and reverse lights - thrilled with everything I've ever bought from them . Will be back in the future , that's for sure . Sarge 320096

At etrailer.com they really do have great products at low prices. The galvanized wheel and tire package is holding up well after a year of use and neglect. No sign of rust, tires stay up. That's refreshing. 728582

Product itself was fine. The hub that I needed is about a half inch shorter (a short hub 3.5") than what etrailer sell in a 4 bolt pattern. To have it machined to fit would cost more than the hub itself. So I have a hub I cant use, yet. And its not worth sending back. Etrailer rep was kind and said they where trying to get more short hub selection, but I haven't seen it yet. I still shop at this site. 727819

Great hub assy. I used these hubs to replace out of date hubs on my Tee Nee trailer. Could not find seals to fit the old hubs. Like how the new hubs were pregreased and had caps to keep the hubs clean.. Very good price, cheaper than the bearings and seal to fix old hubs. 727612

These new hubs were just what the doctor ordered to repair my utility trailer. The bearing failed in my old hub so it was easier just just to buy a whole new unit. Actually I bought two since it makes more sense to replace them in pairs. The best part was these hubs come pre-greased, and ready to install right out of the box. My only complaint, and it's not really a big deal since I knew this up front, was a new cotter pin is not included. My suggestion would be to include a new cotter pin, but otherwise these hubs were great. 721663

Needed hubs for 1958 TEE NEE boat trailer, the old hub was blown apart making it difficult to identify, I called their number and spoke with Donna. You don't often come across a parts rep as personable, experienced and professional, as she guided me to the proper hub set needed. I waited on the review until I had the opportunity to replace the hubs. Happy to say company communication was excellent, delivery was fast and everything fit perfectly and was fairly simple install. Thank you Donna! 691265

My brother in law's old side delivery hay rake broke down. The carrier bearings and housing for the rake teeth bars and carrier assembly were totally gone. This thing is probably from the 50's and parts no longer are available. I looked it over and figured that a trailer hub and spindle shaft could be modified as a replacement. Ordered a 4 on 4 hub and a 1.25" spindle from etrailer. The parts were in my hand in 46 hours and as of today the rake is back in operation. Turned out to be a pretty easy fix since the 1.25 spindle fit perfectly into the old mount and just had drill a retaining pin hole and had to cut off about 3/4 " of the weld end of the spindle to get the correct spacing. The lug bolts fit snuggly into the hole from the original bearing housing which helped line up the assembly. All I had to do was fabricate a round plate with holes for the hub's lug bolts which was then bolted to the larger wheel which carries the rake teeth bars. 677710

Good overall product. It would be nice if the bearings came already packed, but not a deal breaker. The reviews condemning the dust covers are correct. I had problems installing both covers and ended up using the set from hubs that I removed. Some reviews claim that they are flimsy. They are a little light, but would be fine if they fit properly. The diameter is too large or there is not enough taper to fit them in easily. My old set went in perfectly. I imagine I would be frustrated and give fewer stars if I was unable to reuse my existing dust covers. Good luck! 663750

This hub assembly is for a spindle 4 inches in length. Etrailer has done a fantastic job of putting all the specs for this product on the product webpage expect the spindle length. If you have an older trailer, you may have a 3 inch spindle. Double check your spindle length before you order. This product ships un-assembled and without grease. Bearings and hubs that have been greased and assembled in preparation for installation are non-refundable if it does not fit the spindle. Don't make my mistakes. 651734

Do you have a question about this Trailer Hubs and Drum?

  • What Does BTR and BT8 Mean when Picking Out Replacement Trailer Hub
  • BTR and BT8 are the reference numbers for a standard trailer spindle size. When picking out a hub for a trailer you have to make sure that the hub is designed to fit the spindle. What you will need to do is measure spindles on your trailer where the bearings ride and with the info we will be able to tell what hubs will fit. If the spindles are .99 inch and .99 inch where the bearings ride you have a BT8 spindle and would need # AKIHUB-440-2-1K. If the spindles are 1.06 and 1.06 inch...

  • How to Find the Correct Replacement Hub
  • There is a way to find the correct replacement hub, but not by the size of the hub face. In order to find the correct replacement hubs for your trailer, you need to first know what bearings your current hub has; you should be able to see the part number stamped directly on them. If you are unable to find them, you need to use a digital caliper such as # 301-17068 and measure your spindle to the thousandths of an inch where the bearings and grease seal ride. You can use the photo I've attached...

  • What Is the Difference Between a BTR and BT8 Spindle
  • The BTR and BT8 denotations refer to the spindle, not the trailer hub. The difference between a BTR and BT8 spindle is that the BTR spindle uses a 1.063" diameter L44649 bearing and the BT8 spindle uses a 0.99" diameter L44643 bearing. In order to find out which you have you will need to pull the hub and either measure the spindle or look for the bearing numbers on the bearing. If you have BTR spindles then you can use part # AKIHUB-440-2-2K but if you have BT8 spindles then you will...

If instead you have the BTR you'd want the part # AKIHUB-440-2-2K.

  • Selecting New Hub to Replace Old Hub That Used Bolts
  • Strictly speaking you could change your hubs by installing threaded studs that would accept lug nuts in place of the bolts that currently secure your wheels. But honestly, I would just replace the hubs since yours are fairly old at this point. The keys to selecting new hubs for your boat trailer are 1) matching up their weight rating to the axle rating; 2) matching the wheel bolt pattern, in this case 4-on-4; and 3) matching up the bearings used in the old and new hubs. A new hub...

  • 4-on-4 Bolt Pattern Hub/Drum for Use on 2K-Rated Axle
  • Matching up new hub/drum assemblies to your Dexter P-11 axle just requires matching up the bearings used in the original hubs and confirming the axle weight rating. New hubs have to use the same bearings in order to fit on your spindles and your new pair of hubs need to be rated for the capacity of your axle. Usually a plate or sticker on the axle itself (or the trailer) will tell you this. I see that you selected 7-inch brake assemblies for a 2K axle. For 4-bolt hub/drums you can use...

  • Recommended Trailer Hubs and Spindles
  • For your 4 bolt idler hub, I recommend the Trailer Idler Hub Assembly for 2,000-lb Axles - 4 on 4 # AKIHUB-440-2-1K which comes with 1 inch inner diameter bearings # L44643. We don't have anything that is a fit for the shorter spindle. These are all fits for the standard 4.7 inch spindle so you may want to consider replacing your spindles with the Spindle 1.25" RD x 4" STUB # R104BT8. I've attached a photo with the dimensions to assist.

  • How to Tell if Trailer has a BT8 or BTR Spindle Installed
  • A BT8 spindle would have a diameter of .99 of an inch where the bearings would both install and would have a diameter of 1.24 where the great seal would ride. That would require a hub part # 8-91-05UC1 for an idler hub. A BTR spindle would have dimensions of 1.06 inch for outer and inner bearing plus 1.50 inch where grease seal would install. That would require an idler hub part # AKIHUB-545-2-G-2K.

  • Length of Trailer Idler Hub Assembly for 2,000 lb Axles
  • I measured the Trailer Idler Hub Assembly # AKIHUB-440-2-1K and found it was 4-1/4" long. This hub uses inner and outer bearing # L44643 which have a 1" inner diameter as well as grease seal # 34823, which has a 1.249" inner diameter. It also has a 4 on 4" bolt pattern which is important so you know your current wheels will fit. I have added links to video reviews of this hub for you to take a look at.

  • 4 Lug Hub Replacement for Hub Marked BT100
  • From previous customers with your hub we have found the BT100 hub to be one that has bearing numbers L44643 for the inner and outer bearings. So for a hub that will fit and has the right bolt pattern you'd need the part # AKIHUB-440-2-1K.

  • Is There Difference Between etrailer.com and Dexter Hubs that Fit 1 inch Spindle
  • In general the etrailer.com hubs like part # AKIHUB-440-2-1K cost a bit less than the Dexter hub equivalents but offer the same fit and performance. We just get them at a better price so we can pass the savings on to you. Since your spindle has diameters of 1 inch for where both bearings ride this hub would be the correct fit.

  • Difference Between an Idler Hub and a Hub/Drum
  • The Dexter Trailer Hub Assembly you referenced, part # AKIHUB-440-2-1K is known as an idler hub. An idler is a hub that is no provisions for trailer brakes. It has no brake drum. Part # 8-276-5 is an example of a hub/ drum that has a brake drum that can be used with a brake assembly like part # 23-47. The # AKIHUB-440-2-1K would be an acceptable replacement for an idler hub with a 4-on-4 bolt pattern that uses # L44643 inner and outer wheel bearings.

  • Replacement for Dexter 8-91A Hub
  • I did some research and there is no direct replacement for your hub due to how old it is. So in order to find the correct replacement, you will need to know the bearing numbers of your current hub because the information you gave is irrelevant. If you are unable to find them, you would need to use a digital caliper such as # PTW80157 and measure your spindle to the thousandths of an inch where the bearings ride. You can use the photo I've attached to see exactly where you need to measure. There...

  • Can Trailer Spindle # SP204BT8 Be Used with Trailer Hub # 34822BX
  • Yes, you can use hub # AKIHUB-440-2-1K with spindle # SP204BT8. These two parts are compatible. Spindles get welded onto the ends of an axle. This is a precision job because it has to be perfectly straight and concentric or the trailer will ride poorly and you will have faster tire wear and faster wear on the suspension. I strongly recommend having a qualified professional with experiencing working on trailers install the spindles. The other option is to get a whole new axle with the...

  • Replacement Trailer Hub Assemblies For A 1976 Valley Forge
  • I do have options for you however, in order to recommend the correct hub assemblies for your 1976 Valley Forge, I would need to know the inner and outer bearing numbers located on the inside edge of the bearing or if these are not visible, I would need you to use a digital caliper such as the Carbon Fiber Digital Caliper part # PTW80157 to measure both the inner and outer bearing seats on your spindle. I have attached a video that will further explain this process. If your current hubs...

  • Will Bearing Buddies Fit Trailer Hub Assembly for 2K Axles AKIHUB-440-2-1K
  • You don't have to have Bearing Buddies for hub # AKIHUB-440-2-1K but you can use them if you want to (as long as the spindle the hubs go onto does NOT have a grease zerk fitting at the very end). You would need 1.98 bearing protectors such as # BB1980A-SS, # BB1980A, or # KREB1980AC. Then to fill the hubs (and bearings) with grease you would use a grease gun such as # L30100 and grease such as # L11399. If you don't want to use bearing protectors you will need to pack the bearings...

  • Replacement Axle and Hubs for Small Boat Trailer that Used Super Lube Hubs
  • We don't currently carry Tie Down products, but based on my research it looks like the only difference between the Super Lube Hubs and a standard trailer hub from any other manufacturer is that there is a grease fitting built right into the hub itself. This simply allows you to easily add grease to the hub and bearings for regular maintenance. As long as you make sure the hub uses bearings that will fit your trailer spindle, there is no reason you couldn't use a Super Lube Hub on a different...
