Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Went up from 12" to 13" wheels and decided on these because of their speed rating (M 81 mph). Perfect fit onto existing hubs. 2500 miles from Florida to Nova Scotia, Canada at mostly 65 mph. No problems. Tires did not get excessively hot, could always touch with full palm.
Fast delivery from e-trailer.

The tire and rim not only look great but make the refurbished trailer look closer to being new. The service from etrailer was prefect. No problems. The delivery was even earlier than expected. All the products we have purchased have been exceptional.

I bought this for a spare for my trailer, I haven’t used it yet and I hope that I never will. The pilot diameter hole is 1/8” bigger than I wanted, but it was the closest one that I could find. Thank you for waiting one year before asking me for a review, this makes much more sense. For above reasons, I can’t give you an excellent rating, but for the price, I think it’s great!

by:

I ordered these for my 1997 Jayco 1207 KB popup camper. I ordered item K71-723-01 to provide extra clearance for the tires. Everything shipped quickly! I ordered three of these tires and wheels. They are all great and fit perfectly.

by:

Super fast shipping, Great Price, Great Quality

by:

I'm very thankful that I found etrailer. Great prices very good product. Very good product information.
Please keep the good work.

by:

Seem great so far! Bought them for a camper I built. Was planning on going from Indiana to Yellowstone last summer with them. But then COVID hit and National Parks closed. We have done some more local trips of 25-100 miles and worked great so far.

by:

As always, it is a pleasure to do business with etrailer.
The only complaint I have is about the shipping company UPS. The shipping from this company is always late or delayed

by:

Doing a DIY lift on my ancient Jayco pop up trailer to accommodate larger tires with a higher speed rating. Tires arrived very well packed and in perfect condition, very happy with them!

Comments
Its a year later and these tires are still going strong. Multiple camping trips with the now lifted popup under our belt and these tires have made pulling the trailer at highway speeds a breeze. The larger diameter combined with the axle lift also means getting the trailer into the back country is easier. Highly recommend these tires if youre doing a lift on your popup!

These tires are fantastic after 1 year and 2600 miles the tires still look brand new. I believe that these tires will last another year and 2600 more miles. For the last 15 years I have been getting around 1200 miles out of a set of tires, I love to fish so my trailer goes everywhere. yes I will buy these again.

Comments
the tires still look new and have 4100 miles on them fantastic

I was very pleased with the tire ordering process, it was easy to understand. The tires were shipped and received in a timely manner. My only concern is with the age of the tires. The tires were mfg. 51 of 17 since it is now 5 of 19 the tires are already 17 months old. Your website recommends a life expectancy of trailer tires to be 7 years that would be 84 months. So the tires I got have already gone through 20% of their life expectancy. My reference number is107755102

Comments
Its not unheard of for tires to arrive at our location that were manufactured a year or more before we received them. These tires are manufactured overseas. After they are manufactured, they can sit in a warehouse for months until theyre packed in a shipping container and ultimately loaded on a container ship and shipped to the US. The trip here and entry through US Customs can take a month or even more. The tires then sit in a warehouse in the US until we order and receive them. Tires that are stored in a warehouse under controlled conditions dont age or dry rot like tires that are exposed to the elements and UV radiation do. The fact that your tires were older than a year when you received them will not have any effect on their lifespan or durability. They should be good for up to 6-7 years, assuming theyre not stored in direct sunlight, not overloaded, kept properly inflated and their speed rating isnt being exceeded. The product warranty begins at the date of purchase, not the date of manufacture.

Put LoadStar tires and wheels on my 32 foot sailplane trailer last year. Currently have about 1600 miles of combined highway and off-road on them with no problems. So far they have held up better than other tires I have tried in the past., Stable trailer handling. negligible air loss, and no sidewall checking in desert conditions. I'm happy

Wheels and tires are as described , fast shipping, they look good on my trailer thank you

We have been looking for tires to replace the ones on our boat trailer. They were very hard to find, as we live in a rural area. I found the tire and rims at etrailer.com. The price was unbeatable! The tires fit on the trailer and will work great! (We haven't had a chance to take the boat out yet) Shipping was prompt and communication was great! Thanks!

by:

Thanks so much for the fast service. I have an older boat trailer that had 12 inch tires on it that were needing replaced when I came across your website and found that I could get a four on four bolt pattern in a 13 inch wheel. Your website was very informative on trailer tires. I put them on the day they arrived, and I am very happy with them!!

by:

Finally had the time to review, mount, and pull the trailer with the new tires and wheels. We could not be more satisfied at this point from the initial purchase and your complete execution of all commitments regarding delivery of the product!
Thank for your excellent service! We apologize that we currently have not taken photos with the new tires.
Best regards
Bill

I have a 12-15 year old Rockwood Freedom pop up (bought
used) that had 5.30-12 tires and rims standard. Tires were
wearing out fast in center treads. I finally realized they were
vastly overloaded. GVW= about 3000 pounds. Tires were rated
at 1045 each. I upgraded to 13 inch rims and tires and installed
yesterday. If the rims and tires perform half as much as the way
they look- they'll run forever! Rims and tires mounted and
delivered to the front door---excellent.

by:

Very easy transaction. Buying this combo of tire and wheel proved to save me money The additional cost of adding the wheel was still cheaper than paying to have them mounted locally if buying only the tires. Plus the tire tread pattern is superior to what I have now and I feel that the tire wear will improve. Also because of the way the items were packaged the new rims don't have a scratch on them. Cant wait to mount them and hit the road. Had to hold back one star only cause I have not yet mounted the new wheels. Great service and product

by:

I found what seemed almost impossible on the etrailer website! The 4 lug boat trailer tire and rim, exact size I needed and an led license plate light! Found what I needed and went with ground service delivery, was then upgraded by etrailer for 3-5 and in 3 days it was there on my porch, perfect!! Great service!!!

Needed wheels/tires for my boat trailer, had to leave my boat in another state due to bent wheel, called etrailer Wednesday to order this combo, spoke with Anna she assured me that I would have them in time to pick my boat up on the way back, they shipped for free. Sure enough the wheels where delivered on Friday! Thanks to Anna and her team we are able to keep our schedule! Thanks for the great service!

Bought 2 of these to overcome the 55mph limitation with the 12" rims & tires on my light weight kayak trailer. At 24" versus 20" diameter, the new tires will turn the same rpm at 65 mph as the old did at 55.
The order came as promised...at the time promised. I just road tested the trailer, and there was no bounce or sway. So far, I'm completely satisfied, and quite happy with etrailer in general.

  • Information Needed to Pick Out Replacement Wheels for a Trailer
In order to pick out the correct replacement rim for your trailer you will need to know the bolt pattern of the hub that is on your trailer as well as the diameter of wheel you would like. Most likely the bolt pattern is 4 on 4 inch, but still verify that for me and include the diameter wheel you would like and I will help you pick out the correct wheels. I attached FAQ on how to determine bolt patterns for you to check out.

  • Tire and Wheel Recommendation for a 1973 Boat Trailer with 13 Inch Wheels and 4 Hole Bolt Pattern
We do carry 13 inch wheels with a 4 hole bolt pattern, but there are a few other factors that we will need to look at to make sure we can get you a wheel that will work with your trailer. First, we carry two different 4 hole bolt patterns for a 13 inch wheel. The bolt patterns are 4 on 4 inches and 4 on 9.44. You will want to measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the bolt hole directly opposite of that hole to find what bolt pattern your wheels have. I have attached...

  • Will Going to a Higher Capacity Trailer Tire Increase the Weight Capacity of the Trailer
No, adding a higher capacity trailer tire does not increase the capacity of the trailer UNLESS the tires you have are rated lower than the axle capacity. A trailers weight capacity is set by the axle so that is what you will be limited to. If you check the trailer tongue or frame, somewhere there should be a plate or sticker that lists the axle capacity. If you cannot find this information then it may be on the axle itself. If you still cannot find it there then you will need to pull off...

  • Is Going to a Bigger Trailer Tire Than Stock Recommended
If you arent overloading your current wheel/tire combo then I wouldnt necessarily recommend going with a different setup. If you have the clearance for a larger setup then it technically would work, as long as the motives for going to a different setup is not to try and carry more weight than the trailer is rated for. A larger tire might build less heat, but if you are within capacity for the wheels and tires this shouldnt be an issue. Higher rated wheels and tires will not increase the...

  • Replacement Tire and Wheel Recommendation for 35 Year Old Trailer With ST175/80D13 Tires
Even though your trailer is 35 years old, tire sizing has not changed. The Kenda ST175/80D13 Bias Trailer Tire # AM3S120 is the correct tire for your trailer. The 13 inch measurement comes from the diameter distance on the inside of the tire. The outside of the rim will measure approximately 14 inches because the tire fits inside of the rim/wheel. I went out to our warehouse and measured the # AM3S120 that you referenced and the outside diameter is 14 inches, however it fits a 13 inch...

  • Why Are Wheel Pilot Hole Measurements Taken in Decimals and Not Fractions.
The wheel pilot hole will only matter if A) the wheel centers on the hub and uses wheel bolts, nut lug nuts, to secure to the hub or B) if the hole is too small on a hub that uses lug nuts. If your wheels secure to the hub using lug nuts then the pilot hole can be larger than the part of the hub it fits on. Why we use decimals and not fractions is because when a wheel does install with wheel bolts, the pilot hole has to be exact. Fractions are not accurate enough and someone can easily...

The tires you currently have would measure approximately 20-1/2 inches tall. For a tire/wheel combination that would be taller but still have the 4-bolt pattern I recommend a tire/wheel combination like the Loadstar ST175/80D13, part # AM3S120. This tire wheel is a load range C combo and has a capacity of 1360 lbs at 50 psi. Since your current trailer tire size starts with the letter P that means it's a vehicle tire and shouldn't be used on a trailer. You'd want a trailer tire size that starts with ST like the # AM3S120 which is a tire size ST175/80D13. There isn't a larger size with a 4 lug bolt pattern so this would be your best option.
