Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Doing a DIY lift on my ancient Jayco pop up trailer to accommodate larger tires with a higher speed rating. Tires arrived very well packed and in perfect condition, very happy with them!

Comments
Its a year later and these tires are still going strong. Multiple camping trips with the now lifted popup under our belt and these tires have made pulling the trailer at highway speeds a breeze. The larger diameter combined with the axle lift also means getting the trailer into the back country is easier. Highly recommend these tires if youre doing a lift on your popup!

Seem great so far! Bought them for a camper I built. Was planning on going from Indiana to Yellowstone last summer with them. But then COVID hit and National Parks closed. We have done some more local trips of 25-100 miles and worked great so far.

These tires are fantastic after 1 year and 2600 miles the tires still look brand new. I believe that these tires will last another year and 2600 more miles. For the last 15 years I have been getting around 1200 miles out of a set of tires, I love to fish so my trailer goes everywhere. yes I will buy these again.

I ordered these for my 1997 Jayco 1207 KB popup camper. I ordered item K71-723-01 to provide extra clearance for the tires. Everything shipped quickly! I ordered three of these tires and wheels. They are all great and fit perfectly.

Another great product. It also arrived earlier than expected. Which was a good thing. Originally I purchased one tire and rim for a remodel project. It looked great when it arrived. So I ordered a second to balance the trailer appearance.

I was very pleased with the tire ordering process, it was easy to understand. The tires were shipped and received in a timely manner. My only concern is with the age of the tires. The tires were mfg. 51 of 17 since it is now 5 of 19 the tires are already 17 months old. Your website recommends a life expectancy of trailer tires to be 7 years that would be 84 months. So the tires I got have already gone through 20% of their life expectancy. My reference number is107755102

Comments
Its not unheard of for tires to arrive at our location that were manufactured a year or more before we received them. These tires are manufactured overseas. After they are manufactured, they can sit in a warehouse for months until theyre packed in a shipping container and ultimately loaded on a container ship and shipped to the US. The trip here and entry through US Customs can take a month or even more. The tires then sit in a warehouse in the US until we order and receive them. Tires that are stored in a warehouse under controlled conditions dont age or dry rot like tires that are exposed to the elements and UV radiation do. The fact that your tires were older than a year when you received them will not have any effect on their lifespan or durability. They should be good for up to 6-7 years, assuming theyre not stored in direct sunlight, not overloaded, kept properly inflated and their speed rating isnt being exceeded. The product warranty begins at the date of purchase, not the date of manufacture.

Thanks so much for the fast service. I have an older boat trailer that had 12 inch tires on it that were needing replaced when I came across your website and found that I could get a four on four bolt pattern in a 13 inch wheel. Your website was very informative on trailer tires. I put them on the day they arrived, and I am very happy with them!!

Put LoadStar tires and wheels on my 32 foot sailplane trailer last year. Currently have about 1600 miles of combined highway and off-road on them with no problems. So far they have held up better than other tires I have tried in the past., Stable trailer handling. negligible air loss, and no sidewall checking in desert conditions. I'm happy

Finally had the time to review, mount, and pull the trailer with the new tires and wheels. We could not be more satisfied at this point from the initial purchase and your complete execution of all commitments regarding delivery of the product! Thank for your excellent service! We apologize that we currently have not taken photos with the new tires. Best regards Bill

Very easy transaction. Buying this combo of tire and wheel proved to save me money The additional cost of adding the wheel was still cheaper than paying to have them mounted locally if buying only the tires. Plus the tire tread pattern is superior to what I have now and I feel that the tire wear will improve. Also because of the way the items were packaged the new rims don't have a scratch on them. Cant wait to mount them and hit the road. Had to hold back one star only cause I have not yet mounted the new wheels. Great service and product

I have a 12-15 year old Rockwood Freedom pop up (bought used) that had 5.30-12 tires and rims standard. Tires were wearing out fast in center treads. I finally realized they were vastly overloaded. GVW= about 3000 pounds. Tires were rated at 1045 each. I upgraded to 13 inch rims and tires and installed yesterday. If the rims and tires perform half as much as the way they look- they'll run forever! Rims and tires mounted and delivered to the front door---excellent.

Needed wheels/tires for my boat trailer, had to leave my boat in another state due to bent wheel, called etrailer Wednesday to order this combo, spoke with Anna she assured me that I would have them in time to pick my boat up on the way back, they shipped for free. Sure enough the wheels where delivered on Friday! Thanks to Anna and her team we are able to keep our schedule! Thanks for the great service!

Looks to be a great product. It arrived yesterday and installed that evening. I won't know about wear since it is a tire made in China. Trailer tires only last a few years so we will see. Tires are for a 16' fiberglass travel trailer and weighs 1500 lbs (1800 lbs loaded). I will be looking for sway, wear, balance, and how well it holds air.

  • Increasing Trailer Tire Size for Better Load Capacity & Higher Speed Rating
You may simply need to choose new tires in the same size but ones that have a higher weight capacity and/or a higher speed rating. For instance, the Taskmaster 4.80R12 Radial Trailer Tire with Silver Mod Wheel # AT12R45SM has a Load Range C weight rating and a speed rating of M, meaning it is rated for up to 81-mph. Switching to a larger size of trailer tire is sometimes possible. You need to have enough vertical clearance within the fenders/wheel wells and enough lateral clearance between...

The combined load rating of all 4 tires should equal or exceed the combined weight of the boat and trailer. Also, your trailer tires should be kept fully inflated to the pressure listed on the tire's sidewall. Trailer tires are load tested at full inflation, so at 5 psi less than full inflation, they will have an unknown load rating. For instance,...

Larger diameter wheel and tires do smooth out the ride quality a little bit and also offer higher weight capacities. Since they spin slower than smaller diameter tires they also would put slightly less wear and tear on hub and bearing components. Since you are looking at increasing the size of the tire, you will need to measure to determine how much room that you have available for a larger tire. If the 4...

  • Need Trailer Tires/Wheels With 5-on-4-Inch Bolt Pattern
We offer trailer wheels, and some wheels with tires already mounted, in several 5-lug bolt patterns: 5 on 4-1/2 Inch 5 on 4-3/4 Inch 5 on 5 Inch 5 on 5-1/2 Inch By far the most common bolt pattern is the 5-on-4-1/2. This means that the 5 lugs are centered on a circle whose diameter is 4-1/2-inches. Please refer to the photo I have prepared for you and also to the linked article that shows various bolt patterns and explains how to measure to determine yours. We are not aware of...

  • Changing Tire/Wheel From 10 Inch To 13 Inch On Trailer With Raised Suspension
The tires you currently have would measure approximately 20-1/2 inches tall. For a tire/wheel combination that would be taller but still have the 4-bolt pattern I recommend a tire/wheel combination like the Loadstar ST175/80D13, part # AM3S120. This tire wheel is a load range C combo and has a capacity of 1360 lbs at 50 psi. The outer diameter of this combo is 24.1 inches, so this will give you about 3-1/2 inches more height with no added width. You should be aware that raising the...

  • Availability of a Replacement Trailer Wheel with 4 on 4 Bolt Patten for a 13 Inch Tire
I believe I can help you. The rim size you have does not seem odd. We have numerous rims with the 4 on 4 bolt pattern for 13 inch tires. The center hole or pilot diameter is smaller than the ones on the wheels we carry. The only reason this would be a factor is if the wheels center on the hub using the pilot hole OR if the axle diameter is larger than the pilot hole. If the wheel is centered on the hub using the lug nuts, then having a larger pilot diameter is not a problem. In order...

  • Replacing a B78-14 Trailer Tire With 175/80-13 Trailer Tire
I would be willing to bet you have the standard 4 on 4" bolt pattern but you can check this using the attached photo/article. If it turns out you do have a 4 on 4-1/2" bolt pattern then I would not have any options for you save for replacing the hub but if you have the standard 4 on 4" bolt pattern then you can use the Loadstar ST175/80D13 Bias Trailer Tire with 13" White Wheel part # AM3S120 which has an 81 mph speed rating and 1,360 lb weight capacity. The ST175/80D13 tire is 24.02" diameter...

  • Trailer Axle Weight Capacity Based on Axle Diameter
To know for sure you would need to contact the axle manufacturer. They are not a standard size, but I can give you a ball park figure. Axles that are 2-3/8 inches in diameter are normally 3500 lbs capacity and at times up to 4400 lbs. A 3 inch diameter axle is normally 5200 to 7000 lbs. I would guess your axles are 3500 lbs capacity maximum based on the 4 bolt pattern as well. Most of our 4 bolt pattern wheels and tires will have a maximum capacity of 2720 lbs per axle based on # AM3S120....

  • Aloha Trailer Tire Replacement for Size P185/80R13
The Loadstar Wheel and Tire part # AM3S120 that you referenced is a great solution for your trailer that has a passenger vehicle tire size of 185/70R13. The sizes are very similar and the bolt pattern is the same. Passenger vehicle tires should also never be used on trailers. The sidewall isn't reinforced the same as what a trailer would need. I attached a review video for more info for you to check out as well.
