Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Nice upgrade from the 12's that were on before (after some modifications to the trailer.) Like the speed rating and added diameter to help preserve the bearings.

by:

Nice looking tires and wheels.

by:

Mike was super helpful about guiding me the correct tire/wheel size a making sure I had the correct hub size to match.

by:

They are on my trailer but have not used it yet looking forward though

by:

very quick service and delivery

by:

I ordered these for my 1997 Jayco 1207 KB popup camper. I ordered item K71-723-01 to provide extra clearance for the tires. Everything shipped quickly! I ordered three of these tires and wheels. They are all great and fit perfectly.

by:

Fit and finish were excellent. I couldn't find this ture and wheel size with this bolt pattern anywhere else. Shipping was one day faster that predicted and the item arrived boxed and in perfect condition.

by:

They processed and shipped the order lightening fast and on a Sunday evening! Check them out if you have any trailer or camper needs.

by:

A great business to order parts from. Melissa T is fantastic as well

by:

These wheels and tires still look new after a year. The trailer does not get moved often, but just the same, I am confident all will be well when I do move it.

by:

I'm very thankful that I found etrailer. Great prices very good product. Very good product information.
Please keep the good work.

by:

Nice tires

by:

Order arrived on time and was exactly what I wanted.

by:

Went up from 12" to 13" wheels and decided on these because of their speed rating (M 81 mph). Perfect fit onto existing hubs. 2500 miles from Florida to Nova Scotia, Canada at mostly 65 mph. No problems. Tires did not get excessively hot, could always touch with full palm.
Fast delivery from e-trailer.

by:

Incredibly good product and price. Excellent service.

by:

Always fast service , products are good

by:

Seem great so far! Bought them for a camper I built. Was planning on going from Indiana to Yellowstone last summer with them. But then COVID hit and National Parks closed. We have done some more local trips of 25-100 miles and worked great so far.

by:

These tires are fantastic after 1 year and 2600 miles the tires still look brand new. I believe that these tires will last another year and 2600 more miles. For the last 15 years I have been getting around 1200 miles out of a set of tires, I love to fish so my trailer goes everywhere. yes I will buy these again.

the tires still look new and have 4100 miles on them fantastic

by:

Good website, very good product and price, extraordinary service.

by:

Fast delivery good product

by:

I bought this for a spare for my trailer, I haven’t used it yet and I hope that I never will. The pilot diameter hole is 1/8” bigger than I wanted, but it was the closest one that I could find. Thank you for waiting one year before asking me for a review, this makes much more sense. For above reasons, I can’t give you an excellent rating, but for the price, I think it’s great!

by:

I was very pleased with the tire ordering process, it was easy to understand. The tires were shipped and received in a timely manner. My only concern is with the age of the tires. The tires were mfg. 51 of 17 since it is now 5 of 19 the tires are already 17 months old. Your website recommends a life expectancy of trailer tires to be 7 years that would be 84 months. So the tires I got have already gone through 20% of their life expectancy. My reference number is107755102

Its not unheard of for tires to arrive at our location that were manufactured a year or more before we received them. These tires are manufactured overseas. After they are manufactured, they can sit in a warehouse for months until theyre packed in a shipping container and ultimately loaded on a container ship and shipped to the US. The trip here and entry through US Customs can take a month or even more. The tires then sit in a warehouse in the US until we order and receive them. Tires that are stored in a warehouse under controlled conditions dont age or dry rot like tires that are exposed to the elements and UV radiation do. The fact that your tires were older than a year when you received them will not have any effect on their lifespan or durability. They should be good for up to 6-7 years, assuming theyre not stored in direct sunlight, not overloaded, kept properly inflated and their speed rating isnt being exceeded. The product warranty begins at the date of purchase, not the date of manufacture.

Put LoadStar tires and wheels on my 32 foot sailplane trailer last year. Currently have about 1600 miles of combined highway and off-road on them with no problems. So far they have held up better than other tires I have tried in the past., Stable trailer handling. negligible air loss, and no sidewall checking in desert conditions. I'm happy

by:

Excellent customer service, very fast shipping, would highly recommend your company to anyone needing your products.
Rim and tire will installed on towable cement mixer.

by:

The tire and rim not only look great but make the refurbished trailer look closer to being new. The service from etrailer was prefect. No problems. The delivery was even earlier than expected. All the products we have purchased have been exceptional.

  • ST175/80D13 Spare Tire Recommendation for a Trailer
The difference in size would be 2 inches between a 145/80R-13 and a 175/80-13. Since we only have the 175/80-13 tire size the only solution I can recommend for you would be something like the part # AM3S120 as this is a ST175/80D13 bias ply tire on a 4 on 4 inch bolt pattern rim. I can only recommend that you run the same size tire/wheel on your trailer.

  • Tire and Wheel Recommendation for a 1973 Boat Trailer with 13 Inch Wheels and 4 Hole Bolt Pattern
We do carry 13 inch wheels with a 4 hole bolt pattern, but there are a few other factors that we will need to look at to make sure we can get you a wheel that will work with your trailer. First, we carry two different 4 hole bolt patterns for a 13 inch wheel. The bolt patterns are 4 on 4 inches and 4 on 9.44. You will want to measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the bolt hole directly opposite of that hole to find what bolt pattern your wheels have. I have attached...

  • Replacement Tire and Wheel Recommendation for 35 Year Old Trailer With ST175/80D13 Tires
Even though your trailer is 35 years old, tire sizing has not changed. The Kenda ST175/80D13 Bias Trailer Tire # AM3S120 is the correct tire for your trailer. The 13 inch measurement comes from the diameter distance on the inside of the tire. The outside of the rim will measure approximately 14 inches because the tire fits inside of the rim/wheel. I went out to our warehouse and measured the # AM3S120 that you referenced and the outside diameter is 14 inches, however it fits a 13 inch...

  • Replacement Trailer Tires and Wheels that are 13 inches with a 4 on 4 Bolt Pattern
I assume you're measuring from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the one next to it to get 2-3/4 inches. This isn't typically how you meaure a 4 bolt pattern rim but it means you have a 4 on 4 pattern. Normally, you measure from the center of one hole to the center of the one directly across from it when you have an even number of bolt holes. This gives you the complete diameter. You should verifiy that this measurement is 4 inches on your bolts so you're certain you have...

  • Information Needed to Pick Out Replacement Wheels for a Trailer
In order to pick out the correct replacement rim for your trailer you will need to know the bolt pattern of the hub that is on your trailer as well as the diameter of wheel you would like. Most likely the bolt pattern is 4 on 4 inch, but still verify that for me and include the diameter wheel you would like and I will help you pick out the correct wheels. I attached FAQ on how to determine bolt patterns for you to check out.

  • Recommended Tire Size To Replace 165R13 Tires Currently On Trailer
The closest replacement tire to your older 165R13 tires is going to be the Loadstar ST175/80D13 Bias Trailer Tire with 13" White Wheel - 4 on 4 - Load Range C # AM3S120 you were looking at. This tire will be slightly larger at 5/8" taller and 5/16" wider, but this is close enough that you should have no fitment issues. • Upgrading to 175/80-13 Tires On a Starcraft Stardust Pop-Up
The 175/80-13 tire measures 24" diameter x 6.6" wide whereas the 5.30-12 tire measures 21.9" diameter x 5.5" wide. Therefore, you will need to account for an increase in height of about 1" and width of about .5". We recommend at least 3" on top of the tire to the fender and 1" from the side of the tire to the frame. I recommend going with the Loadstar ST175/80D13 Bias Trailer Tire with 13" White Wheel part # AM3S120.

  • Recommended Replacement for 165/80-13 Trailer Tires
I do have an option for you though we don't carry 165/80-13 tires as these are not a standard size for most trailers. That said, we do offer 175/80-13 tires which are almost the same size, just .6" larger in diameter and .4" larger in width. I recommend the Loadstar ST175/80D13 Bias Trailer Tire with 13" White Wheel part # AM3S120 for a pre-mounted combo on 4-bolt wheel.

  • Changing Tire/Wheel From 10 Inch To 13 Inch On Trailer With Raised Suspension
The tires you currently have would measure approximately 20-1/2 inches tall. For a tire/wheel combination that would be taller but still have the 4-bolt pattern I recommend a tire/wheel combination like the Loadstar ST175/80D13, part # AM3S120. This tire wheel is a load range C combo and has a capacity of 1360 lbs at 50 psi. The outer diameter of this combo is 24.1 inches, so this will give you about 3-1/2 inches more height with no added width. You should be aware that raising the trailer...

  • Is Going to a Bigger Trailer Tire Than Stock Recommended
If you arent overloading your current wheel/tire combo then I wouldnt necessarily recommend going with a different setup. If you have the clearance for a larger setup then it technically would work, as long as the motives for going to a different setup is not to try and carry more weight than the trailer is rated for. A larger tire might build less heat, but if you are within capacity for the wheels and tires this shouldnt be an issue. Higher rated wheels and tires will not increase the...

It sounds like you have a bolt pattern of 4 on 4 inch, but the dimension you listed is slightly off from what this bolt pattern is. What you will want to do is measure from one hole center straight across to the hole center opposite of it. • Can you Replace 15 Inch Trailer Wheels and Tires With Smaller 13 Inch Wheels and Tires?
There are still a couple issues to consider when moving from a 15" wheel to a 13" wheel on your trailer. First you will need to ensure the smaller wheels will fit on your hub. If you know what hub you have you can verify it is rated for your size wheels. Otherwise you will need to measure the pilot hole size for the hub and if it is a braking hub you will need to measure to ensure the diameter of the brake drum will fit inside the smaller wheel. Also you will need to verify your trailer...

  • Why Are Wheel Pilot Hole Measurements Taken in Decimals and Not Fractions.
The wheel pilot hole will only matter if A) the wheel centers on the hub and uses wheel bolts, nut lug nuts, to secure to the hub or B) if the hole is too small on a hub that uses lug nuts. If your wheels secure to the hub using lug nuts then the pilot hole can be larger than the part of the hub it fits on. Why we use decimals and not fractions is because when a wheel does install with wheel bolts, the pilot hole has to be exact. Fractions are not accurate enough and someone can easily...
