Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

  • Will the Kenda 5.30-12 Bias Trailer Tire Fit a 4' x 8' Harbor Freight Trailer?
Hey Rhett. The Kenda 5.30-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12" Galvanized Wheel item # AM30750 has a 5 on 4-1/2 lug nut pattern so it will indeed fit on a 4' x 8' Harbor Freight Trailer. The one I saw on their website has 5.3" x 12" tires so you shouldn't have to worry about clearance with the fenders either. The Kenda item # AM30750 is a durable 4-ply bias tire, that has a 840 lbs load capacity, and a 65 mph top speed. The wheel is a hot-dipped galvanized 8-spoke wheel that is corrosion resistant....

  • Looking For 13" Wheel To Match Those Currently On Trailer
Hello Ronald, thanks for reaching out. There is no way to add pictures on here (yet) but you can email them to me. My email is [email protected]. Send those over and I am happy to take a look and see if we have anything to match. Are you needing a tire too? Or just the wheel?

  • Best 12 Inch Galvanized Tires and Rims for Small Boat Trailer
A radial tire flexes more than a bias tire, giving it better ground contact, traction, stability, and tread wear. Radial tires generally run cooler than bias tires, which usually leads to a longer life for radials. I would recommend going with a radial tire if possible, but provided you heed limits such as load range and psi, a bias tire will also work. We currently offer three different tire sizes that have 12 inch diameters and galvanized 5-lug rims. You can check your current tires to...

  • Can a 4.80-12 Tire Be Upgraded to a Larger and Higher Capacity Tire
There's no reason you couldn't upgrade your 4.80-12 Load Range B tires with Load Range C's like the part # AM10062. These would fit the exact same as your current tire with the only difference being that they have a higher Load Range. You could also go with a 5.30-12 like the part # AM10068 as long as you have room for a tire that is just a tiny bit taller and wider. This tire is 5.5 inches wide and 21.9 inches tall, whereas the 4.8-12s are 4.9 inches wide and 20.7 inches tall.

  • Recommended Tires To Traverse Sand with Triton Trailer
The Kenda S-Trail ST145R12 Radial Trailer Tire with 12" Galvanized Spoked Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 - Load Range D # AM31202 you asked this question from are great tires for travel on roads and highways. Trailer tires are built for stiff sidewall and to be run at the max psi which makes crossing sand anything but ideal. The best option is to get a second set of tires with a low load capacity rating like # AM30750 so the sidewall isn't as strong and then let the psi of your tire run as low...

  • Speed Rating for Kenda 5.30-12 Bias Trailer Tire and Wheel # AM30750
The Kenda 5.30-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12" Galvanized Wheel # AM30750 that you referenced has a maximum speed rating of 65 mph, which is pretty standard for trailer tires. For a tire and wheel combo that will give you a higher speed rating I recommend the Taskmaster Radial Trailer Tire with White Spoke Wheel # TA98RR, which features a maximum speed of 81 mph. Radial ply tires will do a better job on the highway and can usually handle higher speeds than bias ply alternatives. This particular...

  • Recommended Galvanized Wheel and Tire Combination with 5 on 4-1/2 Bolt Pattern for a PWC Trailer
You will want to select your tire and wheel combination based on the gross weight capacity of your PWC trailer axle. This rating should be listed on the trailer tongue as GAWR. With that number you would select a tire and wheel that has a capacity rating of roughly 1/2 of the GAWR. Selecting a combination that is rated slightly higher than the axle would be better than selecting one that is lower in capacity. • Which 12" Tire Will Hold Up Best At High Speeds
Not all 12" tires have a 65 mph speed rating. Regardless, radial tires will give you the best performance at high speed, not bias. I'm not entirely sure which 12" tire size you would like since you looked at several so I'll give you a couple options. The Taskmaster 4.80R12 Radial Trailer Tire # TT48012C has a speed rating of M for 81 mph. This tire has a max load of 990 lbs at 90 psi. The Kenda 5.30-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12" Galvanized Wheel # AM30750 that you referenced has a maximum speed of 65 mph. If you want a tire and wheel combo with a higher rating, we do have the Taskmaster 5.30R12 Radial Tire w/ 12" White Mod Wheel # TA78RR which has an excellent speed rating of 81 mph. It also features a maximum load of 1,045 pounds at 80 psi. I have attached a couple short video reviews on these tires that you can check out as well.

  • Spare Wheel And Tire For a Boat Trailer With Solid White Wheel and 5.3-12" Tire
Well Joe, your tires are likely not speed rated but I am a little confused by the numbers you gave me. Tires without a speed rating are typically only good for 55mph. I know the K-353 is likely the Kenda 353 series tire but the w-12-106 are confusing as there is no way w is the speed rating as that would be 168mph and the 106(2,094lbs) while being a weight rating would be more than I see Kenda rates this size tire. You might check the trailer frame to verify what size and weight capacity...

  • Can Pressure be Lowered on Trailer Tires
When a trailer tire is wearing more down the center of the tread, this does indicate that the tire is over-inflated. Trailer tires should always be inflated to the max psi as listed on the tire's side wall. You should only lower the pressure on your tires if they were inflated past the max psi in order to get them down to the recommended number. Otherwise, I do not recommend lowering the pressure on your tires to below their recommended max psi. This is because the load capacity of a...

  • When Is It Necessary To Match The Correct Pilot Hole Size For Replacement Trailer Wheel
The only time you have to match up the pilot hole is when your hub uses lug bolts, which then would use a hub-centric wheel. As long as your trailer hub uses lug nuts, the pilot hole will not effect mounting your wheel to the trailer hub because the lugs will center the wheel on the hub. You will need to measure the bolt pattern of your trailer to determine the correct wheel you will need for your trailer (see FAQ). You will also want to choose a wheel with a larger pilot hole size than...

  • Recommendations for ATV Search & Rescue Carrier
We unfortunately don't carry hubs compatible with the 4/110 bolt pattern as that is not standard for any trailers. This will give you the independent suspension and allow you to dictate the width of the unit for your precise desires versus having a standard axle length.
