• Will Manual Reverse Lockout Work With Demco DA16
  Hey Shannon! The Manual Reverse Lockout Kit for Demco Hydraulic Trailer Brake Actuators # DM5939 only works with the DA91. Did your DA16 not come with an electric lockout? It believe it is standard for that model. If it is missing or damaged you can replace the solenoid with # DM5404. The only other option would be to switch to free backing brakes like the # AKFBBRK-35-D (designed for 3,500 lb axles) which won't engage in reverse.

• Comparing Bypass and Non-Bypass Electric Reverse Lockout Solenoids for Surge Couplers
  Demco Solenoid Kit (Bypass) # DM5404, when energized, will only allow the brake fluid to flow back into the master cylinder. A non-bypass, when energized, will just prevent the fluid from flowing anywhere. The type used depends on the master cylinder type on the actuator. To use a bypass type the master cylinder has to have a return port for the fluid to flow back into. A master cylinder without this feature would use a non-bypass.   I checked the instructions for the Demco Solenoid Kit # DM5404 and though it is a little vague, you will want to have the flared inlet attached to the actual brake line and the flat inlet attached to the #6 fitting (which then attaches to the master cylinder).   I am not quite sure what you have on your UFP A-160 actuator but if you check out the attached picture the only way you can manually lock out an actuator is if it has a manual lockout built-in.   You could get the Demco lockout solenoid # DM5404 to fit the UFP coupler. But as far as whether or not it is the right type of solenoid is what you need to look at. This one is designed to route brake fluid back into the master cylinder via a second port in the master cylinder. Since you would prefer a manual lockout actuator (don't blame you) I would go with the Dexter part # T63FR which does come with a lock out pin that will prevent the brakes from locking up in reverse like you want.

  It is very possible the solenoid is defective. Since you hear it click when put in reverse we know it's getting voltage like it needs. You first might try improving the ground of the solenoid though. It's possible it's just not grounding properly to allow it to fully operate.
