Surge Brake Actuator And Lockout Solenoid For A Homemade Dump Trailer
Question:
Interested in buying a surge actuator for a home built dump trailer that I am working on. This think was a chopped ford dumptruck. Perhaps an F330 for F770, not sure. The cab and engine were removed, and some of the front channel and engine were chopped off. Then channel was welded on the front to bring it to a trailer ball. The axle is the original drive axle off the original dumptruck minus the drive shaft. It is a heavy dually rear drive. Would like to replace the front trailer ball with a surge unit as currently it has no brakes. I would like to install the da20 as Im sure that it doesnt go this heavy, though it weights probably 5k-7k lbs empty. Its heavy. Looking at the DM5947 to drive the old drum brakes on this unit while ensuring that we are extra heavy just to make sure Im not adding a breaking point. Would like to add a reverse lockout and found information in the manual discussing kits #5753 bypassing solenoid valve and kit #5838 non-bypass solenoid valve add on kit. The difference is that you have to drill and tap a hole with kit 5753 which is fine. Could not find either kit on the etrailer website. Would like the kit I chose as I am going to weld it into position. Do you have any suggestions for adding a brake solenoid would be happy for that matter with a manual ball valve allowing me to disable the brakes and back up that way as well. Thoughts?

Hello John thanks for your question. First off, I do like your choice of the Demco # DM5947 actuator for this application. Like you said, no reason to add a potential breaking point and it is heavy-duty enough to handle really anything your dump trailer could handle. That and the weld-on design will allow you some flexibility in how you want to mount it. Especially for non-traditional or homemade trailers this will definitely be a good choice.
As far as the reverse lockout solenoid, we do have an option for you, but we do not carry the 5753 kit or 5838 kit referred to in the instructions. This may be something you can get direct from Demco. What we do have is the Demco Solenoid Kit # DM5404 which will be compatible with the # DM5947 Demco DA10 Actuator. We also have the Reverse Lockout Solenoid Kit # DM5837 which is a non-bypass solenoid that will work with the DA10 actuator. Personally, I would lean towards the non-bypass method, purely since it is so easy, but either kit will do the trick. If you are set on using the 5753 kit I suggest getting ahold of Demco.
