review for diode kit

"Don't be intimidated by diodes: if you can strip and crimp wire, this installation will be no problem."

Combined Lighting System vs Separate Lighting System

Combined vs Seperate Lighting System

A combined lighting system, or 2-wire system, uses the same light bulb to signal both braking and turning. (In other words, the car signals a turn by flashing the brake light.)

A separate lighting system, or 3-wire system, has the brake signal and the turn signal light up independently of each other. Typically, the turn signal is amber.

To keep the separate lighting system on your car functioning properly while you're flat towing, add a wiring converter (C56196 - sold separately) and 2 additional diodes.

Do I Need a Brake Light Relay?

If the engine is off and your car's brake lights illuminate when you press the brake pedal, you need to install a brake light relay (RM-88400 - sold separately) with this kit. Without a relay, your car's brake signal will override the turn signal sent by the RV when you are slowing down to make a turn, creating a potentially dangerous situation. Other drivers will see that you're slowing down, but not that you're making a turn. With a brake light relay, you can signal both and travel safely.

This Roadmaster Diode 7 Wire to 6 Wire Flexo-Coil Wiring Kit is a quality flat tow wiring kit. I'm a average DIY RV'er and installed this kit myself on 2021 GMC 1500 Denali to tow behind a Tiffin Phaeton one year ago w/o any problem s. I would suggest (for GM vehicles) adding a race car type cut off switch on the battery ground cable of tow vehicle to avoid having to remove ground cable before towing behind RV.

Your setup looks awesome! I love the lights on the Nighthawk. Where are you traveling to with your dinghy?

by:

I ordered this kit to get me a heavy duty coiled cable with room to use one input as a dedicated power supply from the bus to then be sent to the towed battery to keep it charged going down the road.
the diodes i chose not to use, as i have a hopkins plug and play kit on the way, that will marry up the 6 pin fitting
I just needed the cable with the 7 to 6 adapters, it was the best price for the need :)

Purchased the Roadmaster Tow brackets for my new Ford Escape. Everything was there and as described but the packaging left very much to be desired!!! If the box would have to be transferred one more time I would venture to say that some items would have been lost. Pictures available if requested!

Great products and price!
Love the video!!
great customer service!

by:

I had my reservations, but this kit works perfectly. Routing the wires to the front took some planning, but the attachments at the tailights was seamless.

Appreciated the help from sales rep.All items were received in a very timely manner. Products out of the box look like quality and as expected, will be completing installation later this week.

Easy to install works perfectly on a 2014 Honda CRV

by:

Not long enough for a Chevy Silverado 2500hb. The kit’s 4 pair cable is about 4ft short. You will need additional cables and adapters to make it work.

by:

unbelievably outstanding customer service! I purchased items from them 6 years ago, and reached out to them to purchase this for new vehicle, same amazing customer service. William was amazing!! Can't rave enough about the great service

The wiring kit was a bit involved to install but the instructions were very good and gave me all the information I needed. Over the last year it has performed exactly as advertised.

Yes, you are so right. Flat tow wiring can take a while to install for sure. It sounds like you did everything right since it's been going strong for a year! Where are you pulling your dinghy to? Anywhere tropical? We are in Missouri and expecting snow again on Tuesday. I hope you are enjoying the sunshine somewhere!

@HeatherA I started the winter in upstate New York and then moved down to Virginia. There was plenty of winter weather to “enjoy”. I’ve taken the motorhome with my dinghy dutifully following (thanks to the things I bought from trailer) down to Okeechobee, Florida. It’s so beautiful here right now I almost feel guilty, almost.

This item won’t work correctly on my 2019 Ram 1500. I had a mechanic verify. Had to take my rig to get it professionally done.

by:

Unfortunately I needed a smart diode kit as the brake lights have the proximity sensors, it wasn't clear when ordering… so had to buy another kit in addition. Sounded like I wasn't able to return the incorrect diodes to help off set the added cost. Live and learn I guess.

by:

Grand Cherokee L Overlander, wiring a few feet too short. Had to piece out wire between right to left taillights. The 6 pin plug is a good improvement over a 4 pin plug.

Flat tow wiring always intimidates me so high-five for tackling it yourself, Gil!

by:

The video is not clear on stripping back the brown and green wire for use on the passenger side. I attached the wires according to the video and found I now have this huge amount of extra wire on the white and yellow wires. I had to redo them and cut the excess out.
Put enough wire in the kit! This is the 2nd kit I bought and both are too short!

by:

This Roadmaster Mitch was recommended by the staff at E Trailer and I could not be happier.

Thank You,

by:

This was such an easy installation (excluding getting to my lights on the FJ Cruiser!! ??). Once I got to the wiring on the tail light assemblies, splicing in the Diodes was easy. I had already purchased a small charging block for the battery & installing that for the battery was easy as well. We love the fact we can pull our FJ & it’s so easy to connect & disconnect with one person. Really glad I bought this kit!!

by:

Took too long to arrive. Test fitting the plug, the pins don’t marry up. When pushing the plug into the socket, one pin seems to be too big and ends up getting pushed out the back of the shell. So right now not a happy camper. Now I have to waste more time reaching out and try to get a replacement which will take another 10 days. Fortunately I’m still inside my departure window.

by:

Great all-in-one wiring kit to tow my 2025 Ford Maverick FWD Hybrid behind the motorhome. Layout the cable on the ground and wrap it in a spiral wiring harness wrap.

by:

The kit worked great for my 2018 Jeep JKU. it should be tied to the brake Buddy system or other systems or at least ask the purchaser if they need it. I had no idea I would need it. Easy install just gotta be patient. etrailer is my go to place when I need accessories for towing,

by:

Always great to shop at etrailer, especially the tech experts. Royce did an awesome job with our order. Everything fit perfectly and the help video provided the guidance I needed.

We installed the baseplate on our 2023 Encore GX AWD as well as the light harness and breakaway switch. A couple of items were incorrect but Royce corrected the issues with no problems.

Thanks again etrailer!
