Video Transcript for Dexter Axle Trailer Brakes 4-50 Review

Speaker 1: Today, we're going to take a look at the four bolt trailer brake mounting flange for eight thousand pound axles, with the three and a half inch diameter axles. Now, this brake mounting flange is for three and a half inch round axles, which are normally on the eight thousand pound axles. This brake mount flange is what'll get wielded to the end of your axle and it provides the secure mounting place for the brake assemblies that use a four bolt mounting pattern. This is designed for use with the 12 and a quarter inch brake assemblies. A few dimensions on this, if you notice at the very top it has a four point five o stamp or part number on it. What that means is it's a four on five inch bolt pattern and what they're measuring is the diagonal measurement.

So, from the center of this hole to the center of this hole is five inches. So, if we turn it and put the ruler on it, there's your five inch. So, four holes, five inch bolt pattern. The hole inside diameter, the large hole is right at three inches and it does have the four mounting holes and if we measure these with the part number up at the top, if we measure it across this way, center to center it's going to be right at three and seven-sixteenths of an inch and if we go up center to center it's going to be right at three and a five-eighths and the thickness on this part it's all steel, it is right at three-eighths inch thick but that should do it for the review on the four bolt trailer brake mounting flange for an eight thousand pound axles with the three and a half inch diameter axles.

  • Can Surge Brakes be Added to Existing Axle?
You would be able to add brakes to your axle, but it would require you to have a brake mounting flange behind each hub assembly, which you may not have with an axle without brakes. You would need to get the properly sized flange for your axle and have them welded on by a qualified welder; I've added a link to our page with each of our brake mounting flanges on them for you. I've also added a link to help articles on what you would need to add brakes to your trailer once your flanges are...

  • What is the Bolt Pattern for Brake Mounting Flange 4-50
Brake mounting flange # 4-50 has a standard 4 bolt pattern for 8,000 pound brake axles. Diagonally the holes are spaced 5 inches apart on center. Side to side they are 3-7/16 inches apart on center. And top to bottom they are 3-5/8 inches apart on center. I included a picture showing these measurements for you. Basically the part number, 4-50, indicates a 4 on 5 bolt pattern.

  • Is there a Brake Mounting Flange that Has a 3 Inch Diameter Center Hole
We have a 4-bolt brake mounting flange # 4-50 which has an inner diameter of 3.01 inches. This particular flange is meant for 12-1/4 inch brake assemblies usually found on 8K axles which are usually 3-1/2 inches in diameter.

  • How To Choose The Correct Brake Mounting Flange For Your Trailer Axle
Absolutely, in order to install a 5 bolt brake mounting flange, you will need the Brake Mounting Flange for 3" Round Axle part # 4-44-1. This brake flange bracket is designed to work with an axle diameter of 3". If your axle is smaller than this, or you want a 4 hole mounting flange. You will need the Brake Mounting Flange part # 4-35 for a 2-3/8" axle and the Trailer Brake Mounting Flange part # 4-50 for 3-1/2" axle diameters. I recommend having a professional welder perform this task...

  • How to Upgrade to 8 on 6-1/2 Inch Wheels with a 8,000 Lb Axle
In order to determine if a drum/hub with a 8 on 6-1/2" bolt pattern will work with the braking assemblies you have on your trailer now you will need to first determine the size of hub/drum you need which can be done by measuring your existing hub/drum (see photo). You would then want to know the inner bearing, outer bearing, and grease seal numbers. If the numbers are not visible, then you will want to measure where each of them seat on the spindle with a digital caliper to the nearest...

  • Electric Brakes for Rockwell 8,000 lb Torsion Axles
Electric brakes such as Electric Trailer Brake Kit # AKEBRK-8 do not fit specific axles. These are 8,000 lb rated brakes with a 4-bolt mounting flange pattern and are 12-1/4" diameter x 3-3/8" wide, so you would need that mounting bolt pattern and a hub and drum assembly that allows these brakes to fit. I've added a link to a video review of the brakes for you to take a look at.

  • Will the Dexter Disc Brake Kit K71-635-93 Fit a 8000 Pound AL-KO Axle?
The Dexter E-Coat Disc Brake Kit # K71-635-93 is designed to fit an axle that uses an inner bearing # 25580 (1.75" inner diameter), and an outer bearing # 02475 (1.25" inner diameter). From what I could find out about the AL-KO 8k axles, these should match what you have. I wasn't able to find the bolt pattern for brakes that AL-KO typically comes with, however, so this will need to be verified. I had the caliper bracket measured and the following measurements will correspond to the picture...

  • What Replacement Brake Shoes and Magnets do I need for Electric Drum Brakes?
I have some parts you need for your brakes. Unfortunately, all of our brake flanges fall under the pilot hole diameter of 4 inches. The largest one we have is 3" like the Trailer Brake Mounting Flange for 3-1/2" Axles, 12-1/4" Brake Assemblies # 4-50. This is a 4-bolt square pattern. As far as the shoes, I recommend using 2 of the Replacement Shoe and Lining Kit for Dexter 12" x 2" Electric Brake Assembly - 7,000-lb # DX28FR. For the magnets, the parts you need are the Replacement Trailer...

  • Can a Hayes 10 x 1 5/8" Braking Assembly W/ No Mounting Flange Be Converted to a Standard Flange
So the short answer is no, there is nothing you can do to your current mounting plate to make another braking assembly fit your current setup. What you have is pretty unique, and when the team and myself took a look at it we were all in agreement that the best step forward is to cut of your current flange and weld on a new one. Now this is a pretty intensive project and is going to require a special jig that is designed specifically for this, so this isn't something you're going to be...

  • Recommended Brake Flange, Brakes, And Hub And Drum For 8,000-lb Axle
