Note: To ensure proper axle alignment and suspension performance, leaf springs should always be replaced in pairs.

Leaf springs are an integral part of your trailer suspension system. The leaf springs provide the attachment points for your trailer's axle, suspending it from the frame of your trailer. Each spring flexes to absorb road shock as you travel, allowing the axle to move somewhat independently of the rest of your trailer. This helps to reduce wear and tear on the trailer and also ensures a smooth ride.

Double-eye leaf springs attach to hangers that are welded onto your trailer. One end of this spring will attach directly to the hanger with a suspension bolt. The other end will attach to shackle straps that are suspended from a hanger. These straps allow the spring to move and pivot so that it can better compensate for uneven pavement. If you have a tandem- or triple-axle trailer, the shackle straps will be attached to the equalizer that connects multiple springs.

To mount this spring, you will need hangers, shackle straps, and suspension bolts. If you are simply replacing a spring, you may still have hangers welded onto your trailer. You should, however, replace your shackle straps because they are usually the first component to wear out. You may choose to replace old suspension bolts as well. It is recommended that you replace the other leaf spring in your setup at the same time. Because springs can sag and elongate as they wear, this new spring may not exactly match the old one, and the alignment of your trailer could be affected.

If you are fabricating a trailer, you will need to purchase a hanger kit for installation. To determine the type of hanger kit that you need, you must know the specific type of leaf spring that you have, as well as your axle capacity. Depending on the hanger kits used with them, springs can be configured to work for single-, tandem- or triple-axle applications. Hangers and other suspension components can also be purchased separately if there isn't a complete kit that works for your setup.

Video Transcript for Universal Group 4-Leaf Double-Eye Spring Installation

Today we're going to be taking a look at the Universal Group 4-Leaf Double-Eye Spring for 3,500-lb Trailer Axles. Part number is SP-212275. Now, these springs have been designed for use on a 3500 pound axle. You'll need one on this side, one on the other side of course. They support 1750 pounds a piece. Now, they're an inch and 3/4 wide.

From the center of each spring eye, from the center of this spring eye to the center of this spring eye, we're looking at 25 and 1/8 inches. You can see here a 4-deep spring pack. It's going to help to absorb a lot of that shock that we get going down the road as our trailer bounces around. You'll also see right here on the top, they do have the little button that sticks up that allows us to get our axle in the exact correct location, get it centered on that spring where it's going to be most effective. When we install our springs, the forward portion is going to mount directly to the U-bracket coming down off the trailer. We'll just install either new or existing hardware there.

We can bring the other side up, and it's going to be attached to the shackles. Now, if you've left your hubs on your axle, or if you're working with limited space, sometimes it's a good idea to get your axle put through before you put this side up. We might have to do that. We'll see when we get there. We'll do the same for the other one if you're using a tandem, or the other two if you've got a triple axle trailer. Now, I'm going to get my upper hardware tightened down.

The bolt in my spring purchase here, and also in that center bracket that drops down. Use a 21 on the actual bolt head, and 11/16ths here on the nut. We want to inaudible 00:02:03 the splines that round the nut into the bracket. Just a little bit to get it started, and then we can use a hammer to knock them on in. You can see that little gap there.

We're going to get rid of that. Then we'll tighten down the nut until it stops. That bolt has a stop point on it, so it's only going to get so tight because we still want to have movement here, but we want it to be nice and secure. Move onto the middle there, and it's going to be the same routine . All right. We'll get our axles in place. We've left these loose in case we need to drop the springs down for them to fit. Now with our axles in place, we can move on and get our shackle bolts, tighten them down. We'll just use the same process that we used on the upper bolts there. We're really just using this wrench to get the spline started. Then we can tap them through and tighten up the nut .. That's going to complete our installation of the Universal Group 4-Leaf Double-Eye Spring for 3,500-lb Trailer Axles, part number SP-212275.

You get what you pay for. 1 out of 4 springs had eyelet ends that were not to spec. One bushing fell out. Another had to be reemed once installed. Getting sick of everything being made in China but I had no other choice. 569009

These are great springs for the price, the dealer wanted twice this much for the same springs, never going there again, word of advice though, MEASURE TWICE order once, my bad all day, I ordered the wong ones, my shackle straps were rotted off so I forgot to account for those, oh well, Etrailer has a fantastic return program, no questions asked and they had my springs to me in 2 days! 93245

The springs have performed as.hoped and expected. The have been mounted almost one year. The trailer has been pulled to Wyoming and back to California. I have subjected the trailer to back-country rough dirt roads and some two-track. The trailer is about 1800 lbs and hauled about 800 lbs of cargo. So far so good. 351506

I make my living with my 2008 cargo trailer. On the way to a job, my leaf springs broke on one side and as I nursed the trailer back home afterwards, the other side broke. I ordered all the parts needed from etrailer using their measuring guidelines to get the correct leaf springs and hardware. Having never replaced leaf springs before made me nervous but given the fact that etrailer's website is very comprehensive, I found the correct parts that I needed easily. My parts were delivered quickly and I had the old broken springs off and the new ones installed and was back on the road with only a couple days of down time. I'm very happy with etrailer and will recommended them again and again. 557850

Positive Experience I recommend etrailer. the price was better than I'd seen locally or online, although it happens that the size and type I needed was a particularly good deal. The service and shipping were surprisingly prompt, and when the box arrived, everything was as advertised. While replacing four leaf springs is about as much fun as shopping for socks, etrailer at least made ordering a positive experience. I actually found the video helpful as well. I've included a picture of what mine actually looked like. A breaker bar is a very handy tool. 5603

I have a question, Ive. Measured my springs to be 26. 14 to the center of each bolt, however the springs are nearly gone so can I safely say that my springs measurement should be 25 1/4?

If there very old and have spent some time overloaded, they certainly could flatten and end up an inch longer than original. It may be helpful to take some of the other measurements on the the spring, and check the information on the axle to find its weight rating. That will make it significantly easier to find appropriate springs.

These leaf srpings were a perfect size replacement for replacing the suspension on my tandem axles boat trailer. My painted steel boat trailer had been exposed to saltwater, so the entire suspension was completely rusted & falling apart. Thanks to the great articles, videos, & documentation here on etrailer, I was able to find exactly what I needed to replace my all leaf springs & hardware, & which measurements to take to ensure I ordered the correct parts. Everything fit perfectly, & there was no need to make a run to a local auto parts store for forgotten parts, thanks to etrailer's articles & complete list of needed suspension components. Everything was a great price, shipped free, & delivered in 3 days. These guys/site is great, will def buy from again. A+++ 124130

Looks like HD Quality. Easy install and perfect fit. I replaced all four on my tandem and it took about 30 minutes per side to install. Now getting the 25 year old original parts off the trailer frame and axles is a chapter in its self. I ordered the Never Fail bushings and hardware kit, u-bolt kit, along with new equalizers to go with the new springs. Good thing too because every thing was worn badly. The new parts gave me at least 2 more inches of space between the frame and the axles. The true test will be when I load it up with logs and hit the road. I added some pics to give you an idea of what I had before and 1 after. 277951

Due to a snapped axle spring on my Outback travel trailer, I replaced all four springs and all shackles, bolts and equalizers. I really like the quality, rapid shipping and the fact everything came exactly as ordered! The only thing I would change is to order the greasable bolts for every pivot point rather than just the equalizer pivot. These higher load rated springs should have been on the camper from the factory! I'm a happy camper now! 28058

After 8 years and 50,000 plus miles a leaf spring on my Haulmark Transport DXL broke. I noticed it Tuesday. Tuesday night I placed my order with eTrailer. My order was shipped Wednesday and arrived via UPS ground Friday. Saturday I went to work changing the springs. I took eTrailer's and another reviewer's advice and bought both springs, new shackle straps, new shackle bolts and a U-bolt kit. The parts fit perfectly. In under two hours all the new parts were installed and the tools picked up and put away. I'm really glad I bought the replacement shackle parts and bolts. The holes on the old shackle straps were worn and elongated by at least 3/16". The shackle bolts had obvious signs of wear. I probably could have gotten away without the U-bolt kit, but the new U-bolts were actually a little bit beefier than the original ones. All-in-all I couldn't be happier with eTrailer's fast service and the parts they provided. 199105

These springs were well made. Used them to replace the cheap springs that came standard on my travel trailer. The old springs were held together with a thin, metal band around the spring leaves, which slid off. These springs were held together with a thick, formed clamp. Much better construction. 651560

We bought a set of springs for a buddy's tandem axle utility trailer. Had no idea of who made it or spring rates or anything. Went to the Etrailer website, figured it out by dimensions and weight. Website is extremely easy to navigate. Spent a few minutes comparing parts and ordered what looked to be the closest match to ours. They showed up about 3 days later. Perfect match. Bolted right in and worked perfecctly. Fast free shipping for really nice parts. What's not to like. Oh, forgot to add...bargain price. Highly recommend them. 653051

Although I purchased a set of these springs and installed them on my travel trailer, I sold it before ever getting a chance to use them for a period of time long enough to comment. That being said they were a good fit and the price was very good. I can't say much more about them. The five star rating is because I had to rate to post and I really consider my experience with the springs...to the point of sale of the T/T to be excellent. 618054

Customer Service assisted me in buying the correct springs since the springs on my double axle travel trailer had flattened and were hard to measure. These springs fit perfectly and were easy to replace myself. A friend and I replaced all four in about 2 hours. • Replacement Leaf Spring Recommendation for a 3,500 lb Dexter Axle
  • From the info I was able to find on the number you listed you do have a Dexter 3,500 lb axle so for a leaf spring you would want the # SP-212275 for if you need a 25-1/8 inch spring or # SP-210275 if you need a 27 inch leaf spring.

If you had to choose between the two though I recommend going with the Comfort Ride Shock Absorbers as they will have the most impact on how your trailer handles. When it comes to replacing your leaf springs you want to stick with leaf springs that are rated for the weight of your axle. If...

  • Recommended Replacement Leaf Springs For Loadmaster Trailer With 3500-Lb Axle
  • We do have a leaf spring that will work for your trailer but it is designed for a 4,000-lb axle It is part # SP-051275. This is a 4-leaf double eye spring and it measures 26-inches center-of-eye-to-center-of-eye. You may notice a little difference with these springs on your trailer. The ride could be a little stiffer, and when the trailer is empty it may bounce a little more but the length of the springs will work for you. If you are wanting to use a shorter leaf spring you may...

And like you said, since it has to be replaced anyway you could switch to double-eye springs which are more common so parts for them are easier to find. The springs do not have to be the same length but having it close means you won't have to do any math to ensure everything is in the best location for the trailer size and weight. You can use hanger kit # APS4 which...

  • Upgrading Leaf Springs on a Trailer with a 3500 Pound Axle
  • If you are wanting to go to higher capacity leaf springs I would advise against it. The problem is that since the trailer axle is rated for 3,500 pounds you won't gain any additional capacity by switching to higher capacity springs. What it will do is not allow the suspension to compress as much leading to a very stiff and jarring ride for the trailer and anything in it. Another problem is that alternate springs may not have the correct measurements and that would mean that the spring...

  • Trailer Suspension Kit and Leaf Springs Recommendation for a Tandem Axle Boat Trailer 4,600 lbs
  • As long as you are replacing everything (hangers, springs, hardware, equalizer), then yes, you can use our trailer suspension kit, # APT5. In fact, this is the kit that I recommend for your trailer. The hangers must be welded to the trailer. The holes that you see in the top of the hangers are actually for welding, not bolt holes. For the leaf springs, you will be much happier with the ride quality of part # SP-212275 for 3,500 lb axles. The other springs you referenced are for 5,000...

  • Recommended Axles for Two Trailer Builds with 14K Capacity & 7K Capacity
  • For your trailers, I recommend not using a steering axle because there are different requirements for them and your trailers don't need them. If you want to pursue the steering axle you will need to check with your local DMV for requirements. My recommendation is to use a single or tandem axle application for each trailer. If you want to use a single axle for your 7K trailer, I recommend the Timbren Axle-Less Trailer Suspension System - Spindle w/ Brake Flange - Regular Tires - 7K...

  • Axle Spacing To Use 29-1/2 inch Long Leaf Springs with Slipper Axle Tandem Hanger Kit # AP216-H238
  • With 29-1/2 inch leaf springs like the # SP-161275 that you referenced the axle spacing you'll want to use with the hanger kit part # AP216-H238 would be 35-1/8 inches. You cannot use the over under kits we offer with slipper springs.

  • 3,500 lb Leaf Spring and Hanger Kit Recommendation for Homemade Trailer
  • You have a pretty interesting leaf springs setup on your trailer. It appears as if it is an automobile spring setup based on the length of the springs. That is a pretty small trailer, are you sure you want to go with such heavily rates springs? Going with higher rated springs will only give you additional spring capacity. If the axles or frame of the trailer aren't rated that high you don't effectively increase the capacity of the trailer. For a 3,500 lb spring the part # SP-212275...

  • Is There Any Advantage to Using 6K Leaf Spring on 3500-lb Axle on Tandem Travel Trailer
  • You would not like the ride quality with 6K-rated springs on the 3500-lb axles on your 2003 Dutchmen Lite travel trailer. In fact, since you (wisely) plan to replace all four leaf springs at once just having four new 3500-lb-rated springs will have the trailer suspension feeling stiffer than what you're accustomed to. The best way to go is to completely remove one of the springs so you can measure its eye-to-eye length without any tension on it. Do note that after years of use leaf...

  • Recommendation for Over Under Kit to Flip the Trailer Axle Under the Leaf Springs and Raise Trailer
  • When you flip your axles using the Dexter Trailer Springs Over-Under Conversion Kit # K71-385-00 for 3 inch axles or # K71-384-00 for 2-3/8 inch axles, the other measurements do not change. You simply gain the height of the axle diameter plus the leaf spring stacked spring height at the axle. All of your springs, shackle straps, and hangers stay the exact same. If you choose to replace those parts, you will want to replace them with the same length and capacity parts. I see you...

  • How to Raise the Height of a 5th Wheel Trailer Without Flipping the Axles
  • To gain height without flipping your axles I recommend doing 2 things: replacing your leaf springs with ones that have more leafs and changing out your hangers for taller ones. You can probably get away with just swapping out your hangers but unless you only have something like 2 or 3 leaf springs and you want to gain height you would have to go with at least 4 or 5 leafs to gain enough height. When replacing leaf springs be sure to choose new ones that have a weight rating that matches...

  • Installing Leaf Springs on Single Axle Trailer
  • For a single axle trailer, you want the shackle strap to be able to move so that you have the spring deflection needed for your suspension. Angled like the photo or even almost vertical is fine you just don't want the shackle strap to bind and have issue as you go over bumps. If it is completely vertical or angled back toward the axle, then your leaf spring is not long enough and your suspension components will not move as intended giving you a rough ride at best and at worst failure...

  • Can 4-Leaf Springs be Replaced with 5-Leaf Springs on 2016 Grand Design RV?
  • We can certainly help you replace your leaf springs, but your 2016 Grand Design Reflection 29RS, has Lippert 3,500 LB tandem axles, and unfortunately there are no 5-leaf springs available which meet that capacity. To find proper replacements, you will need to know the length of the springs from the center of one eye to the center of the other eye. If that measurement is 25-1/8 inches, you will want the 4-Leaf Double-Eye, # SP-212275. If the eye-to-eye measurement is 27 inches, you need...

  • Availability of 3,500 lb Trailer Leaf Spring Near 26 inches in Length
  • The leaf spring you mentioned is a 3,500 lb axle spring that is 26 inches long. Our closest size is the part # SP-212275 which matches the capacity but is 7/8 inch shorter. This could work if you were able to move your hangers but otherwise the shackle would face the wrong direction and it wouldn't work right.

  • Hangers to Use with Leaf Spring SP-212275
  • The spring you ordered # SP-212275 would work well with the hangers # 115917 and # 30-20 with shackle straps # TRSL350. These parts are very similar to what comes with the # APS1 which is what is recommended with the springs you ordered. Only thing else you might need is the shackle bolt part # 166081. The distance between the hangers would need to be 24-7/8 inches.
