Note: To ensure proper axle alignment and suspension performance, leaf springs should always be replaced in pairs.

Leaf springs are an integral part of your trailer suspension system. The leaf springs provide the attachment points for your trailer's axle, suspending it from the frame of your trailer. Each spring flexes to absorb road shock as you travel, allowing the axle to move somewhat independently of the rest of your trailer. This helps to reduce wear and tear on the trailer and also ensures a smooth ride.

Double-eye leaf springs attach to hangers that are welded onto your trailer. One end of this spring will attach directly to the hanger with a suspension bolt. The other end will attach to shackle straps that are suspended from a hanger. These straps allow the spring to move and pivot so that it can better compensate for uneven pavement. If you have a tandem- or triple-axle trailer, the shackle straps will be attached to the equalizer that connects multiple springs.

To mount this spring, you will need hangers, shackle straps, and suspension bolts. If you are simply replacing a spring, you may still have hangers welded onto your trailer. You should, however, replace your shackle straps because they are usually the first component to wear out. You may choose to replace old suspension bolts as well. It is recommended that you replace the other leaf spring in your setup at the same time. Because springs can sag and elongate as they wear, this new spring may not exactly match the old one, and the alignment of your trailer could be affected.

If you are fabricating a trailer, you will need to purchase a hanger kit for installation. To determine the type of hanger kit that you need, you must know the specific type of leaf spring that you have, as well as your axle capacity. Depending on the hanger kits used with them, springs can be configured to work for single-, tandem- or triple-axle applications. Hangers and other suspension components can also be purchased separately if there isn't a complete kit that works for your setup.

Video Transcript for Universal Group 4-Leaf Double-Eye Spring Installation

Today we're going to be taking a look at the Universal Group 4-Leaf Double-Eye Spring for 3,500-lb Trailer Axles. Part number is SP-212275. Now, these springs have been designed for use on a 3500 pound axle. You'll need one on this side, one on the other side of course. They support 1750 pounds a piece. Now, they're an inch and 3/4 wide.

From the center of each spring eye, from the center of this spring eye to the center of this spring eye, we're looking at 25 and 1/8 inches. You can see here a 4-deep spring pack. It's going to help to absorb a lot of that shock that we get going down the road as our trailer bounces around. You'll also see right here on the top, they do have the little button that sticks up that allows us to get our axle in the exact correct location, get it centered on that spring where it's going to be most effective. When we install our springs, the forward portion is going to mount directly to the U-bracket coming down off the trailer. We'll just install either new or existing hardware there.

We can bring the other side up, and it's going to be attached to the shackles. Now, if you've left your hubs on your axle, or if you're working with limited space, sometimes it's a good idea to get your axle put through before you put this side up. We might have to do that. We'll see when we get there. We'll do the same for the other one if you're using a tandem, or the other two if you've got a triple axle trailer. Now, I'm going to get my upper hardware tightened down.

The bolt in my spring purchase here, and also in that center bracket that drops down. Use a 21 on the actual bolt head, and 11/16ths here on the nut. We want to inaudible 00:02:03 the splines that round the nut into the bracket. Just a little bit to get it started, and then we can use a hammer to knock them on in. You can see that little gap there.

We're going to get rid of that. Then we'll tighten down the nut until it stops. That bolt has a stop point on it, so it's only going to get so tight because we still want to have movement here, but we want it to be nice and secure. Move onto the middle there, and it's going to be the same routine . All right. We'll get our axles in place. We've left these loose in case we need to drop the springs down for them to fit. Now with our axles in place, we can move on and get our shackle bolts, tighten them down. We'll just use the same process that we used on the upper bolts there. We're really just using this wrench to get the spline started. Then we can tap them through and tighten up the nut .. That's going to complete our installation of the Universal Group 4-Leaf Double-Eye Spring for 3,500-lb Trailer Axles, part number SP-212275.

These leaf srpings were a perfect size replacement for replacing the suspension on my tandem axles boat trailer. My painted steel boat trailer had been exposed to saltwater, so the entire suspension was completely rusted & falling apart. Thanks to the great articles, videos, & documentation here on etrailer, I was able to find exactly what I needed to replace my all leaf springs & hardware, & which measurements to take to ensure I ordered the correct parts. Everything fit perfectly, & there was no need to make a run to a local auto parts store for forgotten parts, thanks to etrailer's articles & complete list of needed suspension components. Everything was a great price, shipped free, & delivered in 3 days. These guys/site is great, will def buy from again. A+++ 124130

I found etrailer online when I searched for leaf springs for my landscape trailer. I am very pleased at the fast delivery and wide range of good quality trailer products and the helpful knowledge etrailer has on it's website. I replaced my leaf springs on my trailer. The new springs I ordered was a perfect fit. 641026

I make my living with my 2008 cargo trailer. On the way to a job, my leaf springs broke on one side and as I nursed the trailer back home afterwards, the other side broke. I ordered all the parts needed from etrailer using their measuring guidelines to get the correct leaf springs and hardware. Having never replaced leaf springs before made me nervous but given the fact that etrailer's website is very comprehensive, I found the correct parts that I needed easily. My parts were delivered quickly and I had the old broken springs off and the new ones installed and was back on the road with only a couple days of down time. I'm very happy with etrailer and will recommended them again and again. 557850

Positive Experience I recommend etrailer. the price was better than I'd seen locally or online, although it happens that the size and type I needed was a particularly good deal. The service and shipping were surprisingly prompt, and when the box arrived, everything was as advertised. While replacing four leaf springs is about as much fun as shopping for socks, etrailer at least made ordering a positive experience. I actually found the video helpful as well. I've included a picture of what mine actually looked like. A breaker bar is a very handy tool. 5603

I have a question, Ive. Measured my springs to be 26. 14 to the center of each bolt, however the springs are nearly gone so can I safely say that my springs measurement should be 25 1/4?

If there very old and have spent some time overloaded, they certainly could flatten and end up an inch longer than original. It may be helpful to take some of the other measurements on the the spring, and check the information on the axle to find its weight rating. That will make it significantly easier to find appropriate springs.

Looks like HD Quality. Easy install and perfect fit. I replaced all four on my tandem and it took about 30 minutes per side to install. Now getting the 25 year old original parts off the trailer frame and axles is a chapter in its self. I ordered the Never Fail bushings and hardware kit, u-bolt kit, along with new equalizers to go with the new springs. Good thing too because every thing was worn badly. The new parts gave me at least 2 more inches of space between the frame and the axles. The true test will be when I load it up with logs and hit the road. I added some pics to give you an idea of what I had before and 1 after. 277951

The springs have performed as.hoped and expected. The have been mounted almost one year. The trailer has been pulled to Wyoming and back to California. I have subjected the trailer to back-country rough dirt roads and some two-track. The trailer is about 1800 lbs and hauled about 800 lbs of cargo. So far so good. 351506

These are great springs for the price, the dealer wanted twice this much for the same springs, never going there again, word of advice though, MEASURE TWICE order once, my bad all day, I ordered the wong ones, my shackle straps were rotted off so I forgot to account for those, oh well, Etrailer has a fantastic return program, no questions asked and they had my springs to me in 2 days! 93245

I bought springs, shackle bolts, and u-bolts and plates. Everything was great and fit perfectly. Only issue were the u bolts which were not galvanized. However, at a local trailer store, I bought galvanized U bolts for $4.50 each. For the DYIers, taking the old ones off took more than 4 hours for each side. My existing shackle bolts were so heavily rusted that I had to cut three off with a hack saw. Difficulty was confined space to operate hack saw with boat still on trailer. However, reassembling the new springs was less than 45 minutes each side. Must have tools are large diameter 3/4-13/16-7/8 deep sockets (6 point), 2 2 foot long breaker bars and a can of PB blaster. For safety: Good quality jack stands, minimum of 3--don't rely on the front trailer jack as it may roll. By the way, I did these myself and I am 64 years old. 668500

You get what you pay for. 1 out of 4 springs had eyelet ends that were not to spec. One bushing fell out. Another had to be reemed once installed. Getting sick of everything being made in China but I had no other choice. 569009

  • How to Raise the Height of a 5th Wheel Trailer Without Flipping the Axles
To gain height without flipping your axles I recommend doing 2 things: replacing your leaf springs with ones that have more leafs and changing out your hangers for taller ones. You can probably get away with just swapping out your hangers but unless you only have something like 2 or 3 leaf springs and you want to gain height you would have to go with at least 4 or 5 leafs to gain enough height. When replacing leaf springs be sure to choose new ones that have a weight rating that matches...

Although we do not have spacer blocks of that dimension we have an option for you that will allow you to lift your trailer with what is called an over/under conversion kit. I need two things to help you pick out the correct leaf springs for your trailer. I need to know the axle capacity of your trailer as well as the length from eye to eye without a load on your trailer. With those two pieces of info I can help you pick out the correct springs. A likely candidate for what you need is the part # SP-212275 which is for the very popular axle capacity of 3,500 lb and is 25-1/8 inches long. It is tough to determine the actual length of a double-eye leaf spring when it is still installed in the boat trailer's suspension; it is tougher still if the weight of the boat is on the suspension. In fact, when a leaf spring is old and well-worn, it can actually stretch or elongate slightly, meaning that if you pulled it completely out of the suspension and measured its eye-to-eye length the measurement you get could actually be longer than when that spring was brand new! If the frame itself is rated the lowest, then your capacity cannot be increased, but any of the other components does give that ability to increase weight capacity. The weight capacities should be listed on the individual...

  • Leaf Springs for Trailer Carrying 20-ft Pontoon Boat
If your trailer has the correct carrying capacity for your pontoon boat and if the trailer's suspension is in good order you may not gain anything by switching to 6-leaf springs. Trailer leaf springs are made with varying numbers of leaves and they are selected based on their specific weight rating which needs to match the axle. Spring length also matter too, of course. If the springs are rusted/badly worn you may just need new ones of the same rating. The double-eye leaf springs we...

  • Replacement Leaf Spring Recommendation for a 3,500 lb Dexter Axle

  • Replacement Straight Equalizer for Existing 6-1/2 Inch Long Straight Equalizer
To replace your existing 6-1/2 inch long straight equalizer you can use the 5-1/2 Inch Long Straight Equalizer for 1-3/4 Inch Double-Eye Springs # TREQR2 with longer shackle straps on your trailer. If you replace your 6-1/2 inch equalizer on one side, you will want to use the same set-up on the other side of the trailer as well. The # TREQR2 equalizer measures 5-1/2 inches from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the bolt hole on the other end. The equalizer is 1-1/2 inches...

  • Can you Upgrade Leaf Springs for Increased Ground Clearance on a Trailer
Using a leaf spring with a capacity higher than what the manufacturer of your trailer recommends will cause a very stiff and rough ride. A higher rated leaf spring pack is not what I would recommend to increase ground clearance. In order to retain ride quality and support while also gaining ground clearance, I recommend installing taller leaf spring hangers since you mentioned that your leaf springs are already positioned above the axle. In order to recommend a taller leaf spring hanger...

  • Recommended Replacement Leaf Springs For Loadmaster Trailer With 3500-Lb Axle
We do have a leaf spring that will work for your trailer but it is designed for a 4,000-lb axle It is part # SP-051275. This is a 4-leaf double eye spring and it measures 26-inches center-of-eye-to-center-of-eye. You may notice a little difference with these springs on your trailer. The ride could be a little stiffer, and when the trailer is empty it may bounce a little more but the length of the springs will work for you. If you are wanting to use a shorter leaf spring you may...

  • Purpose of Steel Band on Trailer Leaf Springs and Which Side of Axle it Should Go On
The clips on leaf springs are designed to be forward of the axle due to braking axle wrap (twisting). The straps/clips aren't super strong to prevent this but they're still there. If the strap comes off or the leaves come apart it is time to replace the springs.
