Question:
Hello. I just bought a 6x12 single axle enclosed trailer for work. I’m a carpenter and did a build out for all my tools and one side is leaning a little lower than the other where there aren’t many tools. Is it possible to replace the leaf spring on the heavier side with a more heavy duty one? Or is there some kind of kit to add to the trailer to accommodate the uneven weight load on the single axle?

Hello Kenneth, thanks for reaching out. There are a few ways to address the issue you are having with your enclosed trailer. The first and easiest way to fix the issue is to simply add more weight to the light side of the trailer. Really anything to weigh down one side a bit will help. I have seen people do this with sand bags, cinder blocks or really any heavy material. This way you can fix the uneven ride without having to modify the trailer or replace any parts.
Another option is to use a trailer helper spring like the SumoSprings Trailer Helper Springs # TSS-107-40. These are made for axles rated between 3,000 and 5,000 lbs, so please verify that your axle meets this specification. These are progressive springs meaning they get more firm as more weight is added. This will help add support to the low side and even things out.
It may be possible to add a stronger leaf spring to one side, but this is not something I can really recommend doing. This could cause the trailer to ride funny, it could create sway issues also. This is not something we ever try doing so some of the results are unknown at this point. Leaf springs really should always be equal on both sides.

Thank you Jesse. That’s very helpful information. So for the summo springs, would they be installed to both sides of the axle?
