Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

11,000 miles this summer in 2000 Bayside elite towed all over America. Proper inflation and keeping those hubs greased meant not one tire blow out the whole time. Tire tracks straight, runs cool, and is very quiet.

Professional service over the phone. Quick delivery. Well packaged. The tires have a Kenda sticker on them but I cannot find “Kenda” printed on the tire itself anywhere. They are made it Taiwan. I plan on pulling them 1000 miles this weekend. Proof is in the pudding.

Price and quality are what I look for, etrailer pulled it off as usual. Kenda is known to be a good trailer tire.
I purchased the tires to replace the new cheaper tires that failed on a long trip ( didnt follow my own advice ) , lesson learned.

Daryl - 07/18/2022

had no problems ordering this product. I was shocked when it arrived the next day with free shipping. the tires were packed in a box so no chance of being damaged.
very satisficed with the people at etrailer job well done!

Great product with fast shipping. Easy to place order with detailed information on product. Very satisfied.

Tires arrived within a couple of days. All in good shape. Had them mounted and balanced at local tire shop. Just got home from first camping trip for tires. They rode and towed well. Very pleased!

I recently put the tires on, but so far so good. I went to the website to replace the tires on my 2002 Coleman Bayside Elite. I had a tread separate on my way home from a trip to NH. The tires were only 2 years old, but I got duped by a local tire shop and overpaid for cheap Chinese tires. I was just about to order the same bias radial tire when I saw in the notes they weren't good for long trips on the highway. Our trips are usually at least 2 hrs one way all highway. I called the customer service line and spoke to Adam E., whom was very knowledgeable and helped to get me the Karrier Load Star radials. Thanks to his help, I feel much more secure pulling my trailer on the highway. I called on Monday and the tires were here by Thursday. With free shipping, you can't find a better deal. Thanks Adam and for the ease and piece of mind.

Shipped quick and I am glad with the ti res.

Still great after one year. Put a lot of KM on them and they are still looking like new.

I finally got the tires put on my boat trailer. They look good and have the load rating I was looking for. I was also happy for the fast and excellent service. I got just what I order. I will be getting one more for my spare.

Fast and easy ordering process and the tires got to my door quick. I will be using etrailer from now on.

I was happy with the order and delivery time for my two camper trailer tires and I could not have been happier about the price. I have put a few hundred miles on them so far and all seems well. Ashley was helpful with my order and estimated delivery of the tires. I believe that , depending on future performance of these tires that I would purchase tires at etrailer again.

No issues and I travel with a lot less stress. Also with the higher speed rating I can keep up with traffic.

These are great tires. I see way too many trailer tires blowing out. Mine were over 5 years old so I replaced them with a set of these. Great tires!

Accurate des riptio and fast shipping.

Karrier Kendra 185-80-13 radial tire for boat trailer spare , load range D. Excellent tire that matched stock tire for a Bass Tracker Classic XL only difference it is a load range D instead of a C. Weight is a max of 1725 lbs., better then C load range. Will definitely buy again if & when I need tires for my trailer!

We needed new tires for our travel trailer, yours did the job for us. They arrived quickly and were in perfect condition. Thanks for the great service!

I like these tires more than I do my wife !

They seem like really good tires thank you.

The tires have been great. The increased load carrying capacity compared to my old tires is also a plus!

I received the tires and when I went to inspect the tires I noticed the manufacture date was 4619, which is November 11,2019. Received the tire on June 12,2021 almost a year and half of time gone if you go by the 5 year tire replacement on China tires.
I called and talked to etrailer and they said they were authorized to sell the tires up to 2 years from manufacture date. Something to consider if your wanting to receive newer tires to reduce chances of incident on trips. Not crazy about it! But will strongly consider it at next purchase time for sure.

Excellent service. Quick delivery. Just what i ordered.

i put a set of these on my 2000 coleman bayside to replace a set of 15 year old bias ply tires and it towed noticeably smoother, checked the tires for heat when ever I stopped and all was good.

Among the best quality trailer tire that I have seen.

  • What PSI Should Kenda Karrier ST185/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire be Inflated To
The Kenda Karrier ST185/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire - Load Range D # AM10208 should be inflated to its max 65 psi. On trailer tires you want to inflate the tire to the maximum cold psi, which on this tire is 65. Doing this will give you the best performance, allowing the tire to wear slower and more evenly.

  • 2002 Coleman Utah 13 inch Trailer Tire Replacement Recommendation
The clearances you mentioned having in your fenders is a bit too tight to be safe when using the 14 inch diameter wheel and tires. The best option is going to be a higher capacity 13 inch radial trailer tire like the # AM10208 which is a size ST185/80R13. This has a weight capacity of 1,710 lbs at 65 psi and a higher speed rating of 81 mph which will help on your longer road trips. You do want to make sure you are inflating the tires to the max psi rating of 65 psi so that you ensure you...

  • Can Trailer Tire Size ST185/80D13 Replace Tire Size ST175/80R13
Yes, the two tire sizes you mentioned of ST175/80R13 and ST185/80D13 both fit the exact same wheel size so yes, the part # AM10208 would work well as a replacement for your ST175/80R13.

  • Replacing 175/80-13 Trailer Tires with 185/80-13 Trailer Tires
In regards to replacing 175/80-13 tires with 185/80-13 tires, the only thing you really need to be aware of is the change in dimensions which is very minor (.7" diameter and .4" width). That said, you actually only lose .35" of clearance .20" respectively. I recommend the Kenda Karrier ST185/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire part # AM10208 which has radial plies therefore will preform better on the highway.

  • Can Trailer Tire Size 175/80-13 be Mixed with 185/80R13
You really need to stick to the same size tire for all of the wheels on your tandem axle trailer. If you go to a taller size the ride will be unpredictable, suspension and tires will wear out quicker, and the trailer won't set level. For a Kenda tire in the size ST185/80R13 the part # AM10208 would be a great option to have on all of your wheels.

The D-rated trailer tires we offer in the size you have of ST185/80R13 like the # AM10208 have a weight capacity of 1,710 lbs when inflated to 65 psi. We do have a great option for trailer tires that are size 185/80-13, though the "D" from your ST185/80D13 means you currently have a bias tire, which are not recommended for highway use. What you will want instead is a radial trailer tire, because they flex more and run cooler, which provides better road traction and longer-lasting tires. The best option for you then, is a radial tire from Kenda: - Kenda Karrier ST185/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire # AM10208 This tire is the best for highway...

  • Will Radial 185/80-13 Tires Put More Stress Than Bias Tires on Jayco Jay Feather Trailer
That's an interesting scenario because we normally recommend going with the radial-type tires or bias-type for highway usage. You should be just fine using a 185/80-13 size tire in place of your 175/80-13 size tire but you'll want to check a few distances first just to make sure you have enough room. You need at least 4" of clearance space to your fender and then at least 2" of space to your trailer frame for adequate clearance and the larger tire size will only increase by 0.63" for the diameter and 0.39" for width so unless you're already pushing the clearance you'll be just fine.
