Why Would Camper with New Springs Still Lean to One Side

Updated 10/28/2025 | Published 03/03/2025

Question:

Hello, I have a 2018 coachman 17bhs and have an issue with the trailer leaning towards the passenger side. It’s a single axle trailer and both leaf springs were replaced with 2500 springs last year. Everything appears to be in working order but the passenger side sits about 1/2 inch lower when measured at the top of the spring to the frame rail. Can I replace the spring on the high side to like a 1750 or similar rating to help level out the suspension? Is there any type of spacer you would recommend otherwise to get it to sit and ride level?

Hey Greg, the real issue is probably that the one side of the trailer weighs more than the other and that's why it sits a little lower. I would see if you can move weight from one side to the other. I would not recommend running two different spring rates on the left and right side of the trailer as that would cause unpredictable suspension behavior from side to side. I also do not recommend a spacer either.

Hey Greg, did shifting some of the weight in your Coachman help even out that lean on the passenger side? Your update could make it easier for others trying to balance a single-axle trailer.

@JamesonC. Yes that was the single biggest factor to help with the leaning. Loading as much as I could to the high side (opposite the kitchen side) helped a lot. I also added the sumo spring helpers which smoothed out the ride and is keeping the trailer balanced even if not loaded perfectly.

@Greg Glad you got it figured out! And thanks for passing on that the SumoSprings made a big difference!
