Quick Tip: There's really not a whole lot to getting new drum brakes. If you've confirmed that all of the specs listed above line up with what you need for your trailer, you can be pretty sure these will work for you.

Self-Adjusting Brakes Don't Require Routine Maintenance

With standard electric brake assemblies, you need to manually adjust them every now and then to make sure you're getting the shortest stopping distance every time you tow.

A trailer drum brake with a red callout shows the location of a tension cable and pulley on a self-adjusting trailer brake.

With self-adjusting brakes, though, you'll always have peak stopping power - simple as that! As the brake pads wear over time, a tensioning cable will automatically keep the pads in alignment so they'll consistently make contact with your drum when you brake. You won't have to do tedious manual adjustments anymore.

Thoroughly Tested for Safety

Dexter invests a lot of resources to ensure that these brakes meet the requirements for certification set by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA). Basically, a CSA certification tells you that these trailer brakes are well built and safe for use on the road.

How to Break In New Brakes

Once you get these brakes installed, you'll need to break them in. First, find a long stretch of road or a big, empty parking lot. Once you're there, set your brake controller to its maximum setting and get moving. Speed up to about 40 mph and brake to slow to about 20 mph. Repeat this 15-30 times. The goal is to get the brake shoes and magnet properly seated into your drum. You'll know you've done that when it feels less jerky (and more consistent) each time you apply the brakes.

Note: The brakes will be very hot after doing this, so after every 10 stops you'll want to wait about 10 minutes to let the brakes cool off before continuing. If you don't, you might cook and crack the pad material.

I placed my very first etrailer order on July 5th for the following items - Dexter Trailer Brake Kit (Code 23-468-469), Easy Grease Trailer Hubs x2 (Code AKHD-545-35-EZ-K) and Redarc Tow-Pro Elite (Code RED63RR). The shipment was received on July 7th but was missing right hand (RH) brake assembly that is part of the Dexter Trailer Brake Kit. The one brake assembly I received, and the Tow-Pro Elite were packed in an e-trailer box. The 2 Hubs were shipped in their product box only. E-trailer provides a nice log of the actions taking place on the order. My order went through 3 individuals (processed by, gathered by, packed by) who ALL missed my order being complete. One of the hubs had broken through the box and was taped back together. At the time, I could not tell if this happened in shipping or not. I found out later that this box had indeed been shipped this way. When I broke the box down to recycle, I noticed white writing on the inside of the box that wrapped up the sided (around the hole that was taped in the box). So, either the manufacturer or e-trailer shipped the box in this fashion. Pictures are attached to show this. I contacted e-trailer support via phone when I arrived home on July 7th and found the items. It was not an issue to get a RH brake assembly on its way to me. The e-trailer rep was not overall concerned with getting me a replacement for the hub. They stated something along the lines of "These are heavy and built to take a beating, let me know if there is an actual problem with it." I received shipping confirmation on July 7th that the RH assembly had been shipped. It wasn't until 7/13 that the RH assembly arrived. I received the first request for a review on July 7th about my order and experience to which I replied on July 10th. I had let them know I had some issues and was waiting for the rest of my missing order to arrive. I also mentioned that both the RH (Code 23-469) and LH (Code 23-468) assemblies that make up my kit were about ~$60 cheaper than buying the kit. Seeing as I received the individual items anyway and not the kit (pics of the e-trailer item sticker to show this) I asked if they could adjust the price for me (both of which are still cheaper today, July 19th). I received an initial response of "I'm sorry, but we would be unable to price match as we are unable to confirm the price of the items when the order was placed." and second response of "I'm sorry, but our prices can change every day due to are algorithm. We are unable to price match after an order has shipped as a result.". I cannot recommend etrailer and this will likely be not only my first, but last purchase with them as well. I thought I was choosing a reputable company but would have been better purchasing my products from Amazon where they are cheaper. Not even pricing matching your own products is another thing (due to their error of sending individual items). The thought of shipping out an already potentially damaged product and a shipping container that is compromised is appalling too. Is it so much trouble to ship the products in an actual shipping box rather than a product box that is not rated for shipment?

This is my first ever non-5 star review. 1) picture shows mounting nuts included. Unfortunately they are non-locking, so now I have to go out and get locking nuts or lock washers. Would have been nice to know that. 2) paid $17 extra for expedited shipping. Arrived a day after free shipping was estimated to arrive. Oh well.
Parts are fine, though, and installed easily. Time will tell how they hold up.

Brakes still work fine after about 5000 miles. I would buy them again.

I was replacing the 20 year old electric brakes on my utility trailer and choose the Dexter Nev-R-Adjust electric trailer brake kit. The non Dexter brand cost less but after adding shipping and adding the nut kit they were the same as the Dexter brakes with free shipping and the nuts were included with the Dexter kit. This was one the easiest projects I have ever done. I had recently replaced the bearings so getting the brake drum off was a breeze. I used butt connectors with the heat shrink insulation wot connect the power to the bakes. I had thought this would be a two day project but did both sides in about 3 hours. And best of all, the new brakes function as they should, it was like I did not have electric brakes before. Again an easy and well worth it project.

It has been a year since I installed the Nev-R-Adjust electric trailer brakes and they are still doing a great job. In October Hurricane Michael struck and I have used the utility trailer more than I ever anticipated and have had zero problems from the brakes. Moving equipment & debris became a daily task.

After install of brakes could not get them to work properly. Coils ohm out to 3.2. Ground is good. Tried on 3 different trucks. Any suggestions?

I wanted to assist you with the brakes and I wanted to ask a few questions. Can you tell me in more detail how they are not working for you. Have you had the opportunity to bed the brakes, i.e. to break them in?

Shelby

2/10/2023

Yes I have bedded the brakes. I can adjust brakes to the point they are to tight and they will still not clamp down hard enough.

2/10/2023

I just want to be clear so that I understand - do you mean that they are not braking hard enough or are they not locking up?

There are only a few other ideas that I would have to for you to test. It could be that the ground is not strong enough and it is suggested to check the ground wire that is attached to the trailer frame. Making sure that the wire is as close to the magnet at possible and that the ground wire attached to the trailer tongue is on a suitable clean surface. If this does not help I would check the magnets again. I have attached a FAQ below on how we have tested the brake magnets. You can also readjust the brakes so that you get a slight drag when turning by hand versus being so tight that they are hard to turn.

Shelby

I have a separate white wire for a ground from truck. I did check ohms of each magnet and both read 3.2. I have not read amp draw of each on a battery since ohm reading was good. I have tried this trailer on 3 different trucks set up this way.

The brake kits (2) wheels, were great, It was so much easier to replace everything (drum, shoes, bearings seals etc). The self adjusting brakes work great too, had to play with it a little to get it wright, but that’s easy on a small trailer (Casita). Let me tell you, if you go to a RV shop and have them replace brake shoes and check all other components, you will pay way much more than just replacing everything with new yourself. Oh, the bearing races are preset in the drum, so you don’t have to remove and replace the baring races (that can save a lot of time and effort and special tools).

year 2 and I have had no problems with the brake assemblies, and self adjusting brakes should be part of all camper trailers. Hassle fee!

by:

Great product. Have put about 6,000 miles on the trailer and the brakes are holding up great! Would highly recommend.

Wes

Still holding up great. No complaints

Boxes arrived with holes in them parts bent or missing. BOXES need to be reinforced or double packaged. Why would a LOWES plaster bag be in one of the boxes? Do want to thank you for replacing damaged or missing parts. One box from still not accounted for.

I am very sorry that the package arrived this way. I am not sure about about the Lowes bag however I will send this information to our shipping department. I will also have our customer service team reach out to you.

by:

Everything fit just right wired up just fine takes a little while to break these things in but once they start biting they work really nice I did a little bit more than just replace the brakes I did the shocks, springs and equalizer then re-painted everything underneath too, pretty much rebuilt the entire suspension sure makes a difference. I'm including some before and after pictures here they're probably out of order but them's the berries folks !

by:

Very easy to get what I wanted for my travel trailer. Brake drums and brakes
Fast shipping as well. Will be back to fill other needs.

by:

Excellent. etrailer gave helpful information along with a quick turnaround for receiving my order.

by:

I’m a one bay, one man operation and I see my customer nearly every week and he is still super satisfied with the brakes. While installing them the quality of the product very evident! I have a smaller trailer that I probably don’t need brakes on but if I decide to I’ll definitely be ordering the set from you all!!!

My friendcustomer is still very satisfied with the product !! By having brakes now he can transport more than he would have before !!

by:

All the parts arrived in good shape with great packing. I have ordered parts from etrailer many times while redoing two trailers.
Leah has been a great help with payment questions I had and updates.

by:

These brake assemblies were an exact fit for my Dexter Axle. The kit came with everything needed to change it out, including the bolts to attach the brake backing plate. Very straightforward instructions. Fast shipping. I would recommend E-Trailer for any parts.

I recently removed the brake drums to check the brake pad wear and found the pads to be wearing evenly and no adjustment was needed. Self adjusting brakes are the way to go as an easy upgrade to the brake system.

Replaced obsolete Warner brakes with the Dexter brake kit. Installation was incredibly easy after watching the video

I am restoring a 1972 Argosy that has been sitting in a field for 30 years. It was the first year Airstream made the Argosy, so it is extremely rare. The first task is to get it moveable and replacing the old non-adjustable electric brakes with the Dexter Nev-R-Adjust brakes at this time makes sense. I have pulled the wheel hubs, cleaned and repacked the bearings, put in new grease seals and almost ready to put the new wheels and tires on. etrailer website and staff have been extremely helpful in finding what I need and shipping it to me fast. Looking forward to many more orders as this restoration moves forward.

by:

Replaced the Axel Teknology made in China brakes that failed due to poor grease seals with Dexter brand made in USA. All parts made in a ISO 9001 facility. MAGA!
New brakes perform great.

Jim

Brakes are working great and should for a long time. See more trailer manufacturers are using Dexter now. Buy products made in the USA!

by:

Another seamless project done. Don't know how many orders I made with etrailer.com but it was a lot. All of the trailer lights, Breaks, 7 pin, and all of the camper light, Hold downs ect are from etrailer. Fast shipping very few returns and the camper rear window was already put together which took a while to carefully take apart. Got it apart and installed it no problem. All in all it was a good place to get stuff for the build.

Good product. I'm a mechanic and I purchased these brakes when installing a third axle to our tandem car hauler. Their construction is good, solid quality components. My initial reaction to these automatic adjusting brakes was that they adjust too tight. This means too much drag when not in use and too quick to respond when used. (i.e., "touchy brakes") I've been a mechanic for longer than I'd like to admit and I'm pretty comfortable adjusting trailer brakes, I do it on a daily basis. These were too tight but better that than not tight enough. I don't recall if the tension is adjustable.

After a year of hauling of loads of all sizes they're still the tightest of the three axles, the other two are manual. (because after 10 years of spectacular service they only needed magnets and drums which were done at the same time as the third axle)

It's not a huge difference, most people wouldn't notice unless they have more than one axle and the other brakes are not the same which you shouldn't do anyway. (yeah, I know.)

So for me now that it's time to check everything for annual inspection I will see how the shoe/drum wear compares and decide to upgrade the others or downgrade these. After all, I said I'm good at adjusting brakes, not that I want to.

These are good brakes, you won't be disappointed.

by:

The Dexter brakes and hubs are great - a bit pricey but far and above the no-name brands. There was one problem with the order (well 2 actually), they only shipped one brake in the package so there go my plans for installing the new hubs and brakes this weekend. Mistakes happen so I'm not real upset about it. I'll update this review when I see how customer service handles this.

The second problem is the packaging. Nothing was damaged, which surprises me, but the two Drums and one brake were in their own boxes inside a bigger (huge) box with no peanuts or anything to keep them from flopping around. I lifted the box up on end so I could pick it up to carry it back to my work shed. When I did, it almost rolled out of my hands because the contents shifted so violently. When I got back there and opened the big box, the three smaller boxes were piled atop each other at one end.

FORTUNATLEY, they made it through the carrier's system, of which I am very familiar since I worked there for years. I was shocked they did. Better care in packing into larger boxes would go a long way.

Five stars for the products. Three (average) for the care in shipping the order.

by:

Installed these before taking a long trip up into the Colorado mountains. Amazing upgrade from my original brakes that kept locking up on me. Never having to manually adjust them is a big plus. Takes the guesswork out the picture.

by:

Well, you may not see the actual brake controller in these shots, but I wanted to display just how much etrailer product was used to restore this old trailer. Re-decked the trailer, new wheel bearings, added brakes on all 4 with this brake controller and battery powered emergency disconnect... new rust protection, primer and paint, new lights and wiring all the way around, new wiring harness/box, and new tire carrier. Nearly all product except the decking and paint was from etrailer. the customer support was fantastic, I highly recommend this company!

by:

Two of the hubs have areas of missing paint and bare metal in the back. Use the chat feature on my phone because I was at my garage taking the old rusty ones off. Wanted to find out if they needed to be replaced etc. Kaitlyn on the chat was able to pull my account and orders up using my email address but needed the order number to get the correct order. I explained it was literally my last order and was delivered today. No packing list to get an order off of. The phone I had didn’t have my email set up so I could verify the order number. Have her the part numbers. No joy there. Was told to contact them back after I drive home to get it off my desktop. Kind of thinking pretty sad effort. She saw the orders but didn’t know which one had the brakes on it. I’ll update again later once I find out what the deal is with the bare metal. I live in New York so bare metal isn’t the best thing to have in the winter

by:

Gwen was very helpful and knowledgeable about the brake kits and brake drums that I ordered, and answered all my questions I am very pleased with the quality of the parts and also the way they were packaged and were not damaged when they were delivered.

by:

Great price. Dexter always good quality. Generic drum hubs time will tell.

by:

Just installed them. Straight forward and easy when replacing Dexter brakes. Shipped very fast and complete!
