Video Transcript for All You Need to Know About the Grease Cap, 1.99" OD EZ Lube Drive in with Plug

Hey everyone, Ryan here at etrailer. Today we're gonna be checking out the TruRyde EZ Lube Grease Caps with plugs. Now with these, what do they mean by EZ Lube It's because if your trailer has a plug like this and a grease fitting inside of here it'll allow you to grease your axles. That's what these are for, right The plug will give you access to that very easily. Now, when it comes to these caps and everything sometimes they can go missing. Sometimes they're just old.

A lot of times they end up damaged, you know, from people going to service your trailer, trying to remove 'em. They just get dented up and stuff. And so if you're planning on getting inside of here and servicing stuff it's not a bad idea to have some of these on hand. That way you can just, you know, keep everything new and working properly. Now these are gonna work with a lot of different hubs, different types of trailers.

We're on a boat trailer today but we'll work with others as long as the hubs have a 2 inch inner diameter. So where this cap actually drives into these should work out just fine. But to be on the safe side I have an extra one of these on hand. We'll check that out. I'll give you a couple of measurements that way you can verify for sure.

As far as the measurements go on this, from here to here it's gonna be 1.99 of an inch. From flange to the top it'll be 7/8 of an inch. The hole height of it it's gonna be an 1-7/16. And then this little part here where that actually kind of dries into the hub there, from the flange to that it's gonna be 5/16 of an inch. The cap opening, if you ever need to replace these if they end up, you know, you end up losing one or whatever.

Pretty standard. That opening is gonna be 1.18 of an inch. With these, they are going to have a coating on 'em to help keep 'em in good shape, you know, prevent rust and corrosion and the actual plug is gonna be made of rubber. And from my experience, it seems if you use it a lot it's out in the sun and everything. I seem to get about a year out of these, the little plugs before I need to replace 'em. So if you're someone that is constantly in and out of the water or using the trailer all the time or parked out in the heat you know there might be a little bit better option for you. So it's a compare this set up to all the other ones in this same size, they're all gonna be about the same. However, one of 'em does stand out a little bit more to me for more, you know, those types of uses. And this is made by DeeMaxx, essentially the same size. You know, it'll work with the same hub but this one it's stainless and the actual plug is a silicone rubber. So it's in theory, you know, it should hold up better to heat, salt, you know, all the different types of elements. So you might get a little more life out of this style. So maybe if you're in and outta salt water lot or something like that, this might be worth looking it to. And if you're gonna be inside of here, you know, repacking bearings or making other repairs or inspections and you find anything wrong we carry pretty much anything you would need to get your trailer fixed as far as this type of thing goes. Other than that, at the end of the day a great replacement option for those of you out there that have a damaged or missing a cap and plug. And it seems like a lot of people kind of wonder too you know how to get the old ones off, how to put the new ones on. And so why don't we go ahead and show you how to do that now, or at least how I did it. We'll pull our old one off and get our new one in place. To get the old caps removed you know, there's a couple of different ways you can do it and it kind of is just gonna depend on your setup really. So what some people do is get the tire off the ground there and you can take a hammer and kind of just tap it in an outward motion like that and you can spin the tire you can keep tapping it until you get it to pop off. You know, I've done that in the past. With this setup though these current ones are kind of tapered and somewhat smaller. Don't have a whole lot of offset here on my wheel. And so that'd be pretty tricky to do. So what I'm gonna do is just take, I got a chisel here and just very carefully when you do this you don't wanna drive it into the hub or anything, you know, so just take your time you can kind of go around it if you need to. And get it loosened up here. A lot of times you can just kind of almost kinda rotate it until it pops off. When you go to install a new one something you don't want to do is you know, get it lined up and just come in with your hammer and beat it in that way 'cause you'll probably end up messing up the edges here putting a dent in it, things like that. So I like to use a driver. The cap fits in there perfect and makes it super easy. I understand a lot of people aren't gonna have this or don't wanna have to buy one. If you do want one, if you do these a lot you can grab these here at etrailer. But something else you can do is hold that up there and take a block of wood, maybe a small 2x4 or something and hit it with the hammer. And by doing that it'll kind of evenly distribute that force and help you drive this in evenly. So that's a trick that you can do. I've done it plenty of times before I got one of these, but today, since I got the tool that is what I'm going to use. (hammer clanging) The trick is that these just, you gotta get 'em started, started straight. (hammer clanging) Now that we have this one done if you're doing any of the others on your trailer just repeat that same process to get them swapped out. But with that done, that'll finish up our look at and our installation of the TruRyde Replacement Grease Grease Cap and Plug.

  • Timbren Axle-Less Suspension System Compatibility with Aluminum I-Beam Trailer Frame
The Timbren Heavy-Duty Axle-Less Trailer Suspension - 4" Lift Spindle - Off-Road Tires - 3,500 lbs # ASR35HDS02 is compatible with I-beam frames and in tandem axle configuration. Due to the Aluminum frame, I recommend putting a thin rubber pad between the steel mount and the aluminum I-beam. The powder coat on the steel should keep the two dissimilar metals from galvanic corrosion, but a thin rubber pad would drastically increase this safety. Zinc plated hardware will work well with...

  • Trailer Grease Caps with Zerk Grease Fitting
Grease Cap set # RG04-040 are regular grease caps that have a rubber plug on the end to access a grease zerk fitting on the spindle (end of the axle). They install the same as regular grease caps. It sounds like you are looking for bearing protectors such as # BB1980A which are for regular spindles. I have linked a video review for you.

While the # L68149 most likely corresponds to the inner bearing number of your hubs. If this is the case, you have either a 3.5k or a 4.4k axle. In order to know absolutely sure, you need to know the corresponding outer bearing number or the inner and outer diameter of the grease seal. You most likely need to wipe away the grease in order to reveal the outer bearing number. In order to accomplish this, I recommend using calipers like the 4" Carbon Fiber Digital Caliper # PTW80157. I reached out to my contact at Dexter and was able to get the wheel bearing numbers you need for your 1999 Jayco Pop-Up Camper. The inner bearing is # L68149 and the outer bearing is # L44649. I recommend getting the complete kit which is Bearing Kit for #84 Spindle, L44649/L68149 Bearings, 10-19 Double Lip Seal # BK2-100. • Solution for Trailer Axle without Grease Fittings for Easy Install of Grease
There isn't a way to install zerk fittings on your spindle to make it an EZ lube spindle, but we do have Bearing Buddies which are designed for spindles like yours that do not have the zerk fittings to make installing grease in them easier. You have to pick them out based on the diameter of the grease cap they'd replace. So if you had the grease cap part # RG04-040 that you referenced you'd need the Bearing Buddy part # BB1980A-SS would be the kit to use. These have a grease fitting on...

  • How to Pick Out Replacement Dust Cap for Trailer Hub
We definitely can help but we need to know the diameter of the cap so that we can pick out the correct one. You'll need to remove the one you have and measure the outside diameter of the cap where it fits into the hub and we'll be able to pick you out what you need. If you have a 1.99 inch diameter you'd want the part # RG04-040, if you have a 2.45 inch diameter you'd need part # DC250L-DCRP, or if you have 2.72 inch you'd want part # RG04-120. To measure your hub bore you'd need the...

All of our bearing kits, like the part # BK2-100 that was referenced, only include the inner/outer bearings, grease seal, and cotter pin/washer but I can help you get the other parts that you are needing as well. For 10" x 2-1/4" brakes we have the Redline Hydraulic Brake Shoe/Lining # BP04-120 which comes in a set for 1 wheel. Depending on how you measured (using digital dial calipers is the most accurate) and because of subtle differences, these may actually be the correct ones. • How to Tell if I Have an EZ Grease Hub or a Standard Hub
Thanks for your question, Gordon! Instead of explaining the difference between the two, I included two pictures below. The first one is the EZ grease cap and the second one is the standard grease cap. The EZ grease cap will have a rubber plug that you can remove to be able to get to the zerk fitting that you have on your spindle. Since you have a 3.5k axle, you would want to use EZ grease caps part # RG04-040. The standard caps for the 3.5k are part # RG04-020. You don't have to use...

To determine the correct hub to replace the existing hub on your horse trailer I will need the inner and outer bearing numbers and the seal part numbers to select the proper parts for your spindle.
