Will Lippert SolidSteps Work for You?

Fold-down steps are typically installed on travel trailers and some RVs. The fold-down steps from Lippert lift up to latch into your camper's doorway for storage. To ensure you choose the correct size for your application, there are a few measurements you will need to take.

SolidStep Door Flanges

The Lippert SolidSteps install inside your camper's doorframe. Measuring for this may seem tricky, but once you know what to look for, figuring out the right fit for your RV doorway is easy.

SolidStep Door Flanges

Measure between the door frame flanges - the doorway width - to determine the step size that will fit into your camper's doorway. You will need a doorway that is at least 25" wide to 28-7/8" wide for these steps to work.

If it turns out you have a wider or narrower doorway, there are other step assemblies that fit doorways ranging from 24" wide to 36" wide. A full list of the available steps is below.

The doorway threshold will be used as the "mounting point" to determine how many steps you will need.

How Many Steps Do You Need?

SolidStep Entry Height

To decide on how many steps you'll need, measure from the mounting point to the ground. This is called the entry height. The entry height should roughly match the height of the steps when they're fully extended, and it will tell you how many steps you need.

The chart below displays doorway width measurements in the first column. If you determined you have an entry height between 22" and 28", the step part numbers that fit that height are in the second column. If you determined your entry height is between 27" and 36", the step part numbers that fit that height are in the third column. If you determined your entry height is between 35" and 44", the step part numbers that fit that height are in the fourth column. Choose the doorway width that is closest to your measurements without going over.

This page's step assembly is in bold text.

How Do You Install the Steps?

To install the steps:

  1. Make sure the camper is level on flat ground
  2. Place the mounting bracket into the camper doorway
  3. Extend until feet touch the ground
  4. Center the steps in the doorframe
  5. Slide assembly forward until firmly placed against outside threshold
  6. Install fasteners through the mounting holes into the camper floor

-Secure the hardware (not included) but dont tighten

  7. Lift the step assembly into the doorway and make sure the latching arm engages

-If necessary, loosen the bolts on the latching arm to adjust

  8. Tighten the latching arm bolts and the floor fasteners

Product arrived earlier than expected and was in perfect condition with all parts included. It was very easy to install myself thanks to the video from etrailer! I am very happy with my purchase!

The steps themselves are phenomenal. They are very sturdy and they were a breeze to install. Would have rated them a 5 but when I received my order the box was torn and had several large holes in it, one of the bases on the legs were bent, but I was able to straighten it out with a hammer and half the nuts and bolts were missing. Luckily a hardware store was close so I was able to purchase new bolts, washers and screws. They only took about 45 minutes to install once I got all the hardware. I would definitely recommend these steps of you are looking to upgrade your old steps.

Love this product. The 13 inch top step is excellent for my wife who has knee and hip issues and I like it too. Good price and delivered on time. The first order from etrailer was for boat trailer spring kit and again good product, good price, delivered as scheduled. I will order again from etrailer when needed.

The Lippert steps installed on my trailer made getting in and out much easier. The steps are more rigid have more weight handling capacity than the original fold out steps. Very good addition to the trailer.

I have a 2012 keystone cougar 327RES. 36’ 5th wheel, I love the step, but think I should have gotten the 4 step. I went back and forth between 3&4 steps and it’s a little much for the first step although the instructions say it would work.

Positives: This was a simple installation. The hardest part was removing the old steps-took 2 of us (and a few grunts!). I filed off the inner lip on the threshold and removed the transition strip to make things as level as possible prior to installation. It took about 3/4 hour to finish install after that. Great product, (first in-field use will be Thursday 10/8/20). Negatives: The shipping carton was trashed and loose parts were strewn throughout. I didn't receive the 4" #10 machine screws, washers, and lock nuts, so I used the wood screws but I'm pretty sure I'll need to through bolt the assembly to the trailer in the future. LCI - replacements please? Also, ordered clevis pins with bimini rings for easier support strut length adjustment. Overall: Very Positive Upgrade-Easy & Useful. I would recommend to anyone who wants a better steps than the OEM.

My husband received our Solid Step steps yesterday and installed them within about 2 hours on our fifth wheel. The instructions he said were very easy to read and follow. The Solid Step just seems to feel more stable than old steps. We are ready to camp. Go away Covid-19

Stairs were installed in a 2018 Forest River Work & Play. The original 2-step stairs caused issues with my knees due to the excessive riser height. The new stairs riser height is 8 inches. Installation of the stairs itself was quick and easy with my wife assisting while I drilled the mounting holes in the floor. Installation took less than 30 minutes. One issue that I encountered was that the screen door was scraping along the sheetmetal threshold of the SolidStep, preventing the RV door from closing while the steps were in the down position. The fix was that I cut approx 1/4 inch of the vertical rails of the screen door and re-assembled the screen door. Door closes without binding now.

Why did we wait so long. We are very happy with them and have had no problems at all. Thanks

- LC791572

Awesome steps. They are pretty simple to install. I have to figure out how to trim the bottom of the screen door. It closes, but it's pretty tight. I installed these on a 2015 Creekside.

- LC791572
by:

These steps are amazing!!! It took the guessing out of stepping down or up into the trailer. Our pups took right to these..in and out...no hesitation what so ever...The old steps we had to help them in and out! Easy Installation as well ... We are soooooo glad we bought these

- LC791572
by:

Great steps. The extra step width And greater reach of the steps makes going up and down more stable and easier on the knees. It was an easy installation as well!

- LC791572
by: 04/25/2021

Watched installation video prior to installing steps & that made the process much easier. I had enough threshold clearance on both the screen & outside doors so steps fit very well on my 2016 Imagine by Grand Design camper.

- LC791572
by:

Easy installation and a great product. I used the backer plate and thru bolts for mounting instead of screws. The only issue I had was that the locking pins for the leg extensions were not easy to remove. I replaced them a standard pins with retaining clips.

- LC791572
by:

Very easy to install. The instructions were very clear. The whole installation took approximately 30minutes. The steps are so much better than the original steps that came with the camera.

- LC791572
by:

Awesome customer service, great product, wish I had invented it !

- LC791572
by:

The steps are great! They are very solid, just like going up stairs in your home. We had to modify the screen door a little, but not bad. Strong and well built.

- LC791572
by:

Great steps. We have a 34 foot Montana and got the 3 step model, I think they recommended the 4 step model but these are lighter to lift and shorter in the doorway. The egress and ingress might be a little steeper but we are very happy. Easy to install the screen door had to be adjusted a little bit to shut properly. Very good quality, I would do this again. They came fast and the customer service was not needed so I cant speak to that.

- LC791572
by:

Great. It works as expected. Great service from etrailer !

- LC791572
by:

These are so nice!!! The hubby had to fix the floor so they would fit!(our trailer is old!) They are light enough that I can put them away. The only thing I can think of that is a small issue, is if it’s raining and you have to put them in. But that hasn’t been a huge problem. We love them!!

- LC791572
by:

The Solid Step is great. Easy install and so much more solid then the RV steps. No bounce what so ever. Great upgrade to any RV.

- LC791572
by:

The product itself is good. The installation whether because my unit is a 2008 or otherwise was a nightmare!! I actually believe that the mounting bracket is skewed or twisted. The second part of the nightmare was getting my screen door to close. Had to remove about a 1/4 inch from the bottom of the door and grind down the threshold. This was one retrofit that I would not do again!!

- LC791572
by:

The steps arrived on time. They were easy to install. They were exactly what we've been looking for.

Which RV step you need depends on the size of your trailer door opening. The Lippert SolidStep, Item # LC791572, is a 3-step model for RV doorways that are 26" to 29-7/8" wide. There also is a variety of sizes possible so "one size" does not fit all. Fortunately, Lippert makes 90-percent of trailer frames and several...
