Will Lippert Pull-Out Steps Work for You?

Pull-out steps are typically installed on travel trailers. The pull-out steps from Lippert are easy to install and fold up underneath the camper for simple storage. To ensure you choose the correct size for your application, there are a few measurements you will need to take.

AlumiTread Mounting

The Lippert pull-out steps attach to the underside of the camper chassis, directly beneath the doorway. To decide which size you'll need, locate the space available underneath your camper that lines up with the door frame, and measure the width and depth. You will need a mounting space that is at least 28" wide and 12" deep.

If it turns out you have more or less space beneath your doorway, there are other step assemblies available with bracket sizes ranging from 25-1/2" wide to 28" wide. A full list of the available steps is below.

RV Steps Outriggers

Outriggers - metal brackets that act as an extension (LC301704 - sold separately) - may be needed for installation depending on the model of your original stairs. These provide extra length if the old steps are longer or wider than the new.

Once you know where the mounting bracket will go and what size mounting bracket you need, that spot will be used as the "mounting point" to determine how many steps you will need.

How Many Steps Do You Need?

AlumiTread Entry Height

To determine how many steps you'll need, measure from the mounting point to the ground. This is called the entry height. The entry height should roughly match the height of the steps when they're fully extended, plus 6" to 9" to account for the drop from the bottom step to the ground. This measurement will also tell you how many steps you need.

The chart below displays entry height measurements in the first column. If you determined you need a 25-1/2" mounting bracket, the step part numbers with that width are in the second column. If you determined you need a 25-3/4" mounting bracket, the step part numbers with that width are in the third column. The steps for 27-1/2" mounting bracket widths are in the fourth column, and the steps for 28" mounting bracket widths are in the fifth column. Choose the bracket size that is closest to your measurements without going over.

This page's step assembly is in bold text.

  1. Make sure the camper is level on flat ground
  2. Lift the steps into the mounting space and prop into place
  3. If needed, mark the mounting holes on the camper and drill

    -Set aside steps before drilling

  4. If needed, install the outriggers
  5. Align step mounting holes and secure in place with bolts and flange lock nuts

-Make sure the bracket is backed up fully against the I-beam on the chassis

    -Hardware not included

  6. Tighten hardware until snug
  7. Make sure assembly is sitting square and level
  8. Torque the hardware to 20 ft-lbs

  • Can 28 inch Wide 4-Step RV Steps Replace 27-1/2 inch Steps on RV
The RV steps do get a bit wider as you add more steps to them. The closest option we have is the Alumi Tread part # LC432698 that you referenced which would be 28 inches wide. For basically all RV applications you can still install the steps but you'd have to move the brackets out or remove and install new ones. For new brackets we have the outriggers part # LC301704 which would work well.

  • Can 3-Step RV Stairs be Replaced with Quad Step
Your current steps can be replaced with quad steps like the Lippert Alumi-Tread # LC432698 as long as you have enough room between you trailer and the ground. The Alumi-Tread install into bolt holes that are 26-3/4 inches wide and 7 inches deep apart. They will reach about 30 inches from the mounting bracket to the top of the bottom step.

  • Will the Brophy Camper Scissor Steps # AS24 Fit a 2012 Raptor Velocity
Since trailer manufacturers don't typically keep a record of the exact stairs that they install on any given trailer the best way to know if the Brophy Camper Scissor Steps # AS24 are compatible with your 2012 Raptor Velocity is to take some measurements. The Brophy steps have an adjustable height of 31" - 39" when they are expanded and the step dimensions are 24" wide x 8-3/4" deep x 1-1/2" thick. They have a weight capacity of 300 lbs and come with a 1-year warranty. Please note that...

Most aftermarket RV steps will replace the OEM steps without modification. The same is the case for the Alumi-Tread Manual Pull-Out Step for RVs # LC432698 that you referenced. These steps do have a weight capacity of 300 lbs so they are pretty sturdy. I am attaching some photos that give the different dimensions of this step. • Brackets Needed To Mount Lippert Pull-Out RV Steps To A Wooden Storage Space
Hey Steve, Steps like the Alumi-Tread Manual Pull-Out Step for RVs # LC432698 are attached directly to the frame using the side brackets. These have a bunch of pre-drilled holes in them to attach to the frame of the RV from below. If you're wanting something a bit sturdier then you can pick up some relocation brackets # LC301704, which would mount to the sides of the step brackets and have a much larger lip to secure to the underside of the wood platform.

If by the opening you are referring to the cutout in the J-Pan then the Alumi-Tread Manual Pull-Out Step # LC432698 may still fit on your 2017 Keystone Avalanche. You will want to measure your current frame for your steps and look near the top of the steps to ensure you have enough room for the 28" wide frame.
