How to Determine the Lift Capacity You Need in a Jack

A trailer jack is designed to lift the tongue of your trailer so you can connect the trailer coupler to your hitch ball. To do this, you'll need a jack with a lift capacity high enough to handle your trailer's tongue weight.

Tongue weight is the amount of weight that your trailer applies to the back of your tow vehicle. Typically, your tongue weight should be 10-15% of your total trailer weight (trailer + cargo). In other words, a 10,000-lb trailer would have a tongue weight between 1,000 lbs and 1,500 lbs. For a trailer this size, you would need a jack with a lift capacity of at least 1,500 lbs.

It's okay to have a jack with a weight rating that is higher than your trailer's tongue weight. In fact, a jack with a higher lift capacity should operate more efficiently, allowing you to spend less time cranking and more time camping.

Trailer and Camper Jack Lift

Every jack offers a certain amount of lift or travel. Screw travel is the distance the jack extends when you crank it (or toggle it to "extend" on an electric model). Some jacks include a drop leg for extra adjustability. On these jacks, you'll see the maximum extension of the drop leg listed in the specs as well. Adding the screw travel and drop leg travel together will give you the total lift. The total lift listed above can help you determine how high this jack will be able to raise your trailer.

I've had this power jack for about a year and it works flawlessly, it beats hand cranking. And not to mention the great service from etrailer their the best in the business.

by:

Bought Pro Series Weight Dist Hitch, Jameson C was very helpful picking the right one out , ordered it on Friday and it arrived on Wednesday a day earlier than expected. Placed a second order for an electric jack and misc. parts. Extremely happy with their service. I don't review stuff but these guys deserve one.

by:

Great item. This is my third power tongue jack since purchasing my RV 23 years ago.
Hopefully this jack will emulate its two proceeding cousins.

by:

Extremely pleased with this purchase. The jack was very easy to install - took less than 10 minutes to remove the old jack and insert this new one which fit perfectly. Assuming it lasts (and I have no reason to think it won't as it looks well-constructed), it will prove to be a very nice addition to my camper as it was quite some effort to lift it up enough to get the weight distribution hitch spring bars into position. I like that there is an easily accessible nut for manual operation, and a grease point. I bought the cover for it to keep out the elements.

Replaced a Canadian made clone that failed after 11 uses. Sounds completely different when using. 2 year warranty, available 5 year seems too good to be true. No idea what the difference is between this one and the 158 one. Nice thick 12 gauge power wires look and work as expected. Not that big of a deal, but wish the 7 way had a 4 way piggy back plug. 9.5 out of 10.

Used on my 6x12 utility trailer, probably has 1500 lbs lift, so practically nothing to the motor. Used 2 times a week during mowing season.

by:

The electric A FRAME jack with the 7 -Way Plug is the second one that I ordered. The unit is most helpful as it has the electric hook up to the plug in and do not require an extra battery. Very quick to install.I would recommended that you include with the star locking washers 3 new mounting bolts. When removing one of the original mounting bolts it broke.

by:

The Ultra Fab 3502-7 went on my 6x12 enclosed trailer with ease and the bolt pattern matched perfectly. The speed seems to be fine and the footpad is bigger than the one on my old jack. The price was way cheaper than anything else comparable that I found on the market.

by:

The Jack works great. However there is no documentation as to how much current draw it uses and I was frequently blowing fuses. I finally replaced and in-line fuse with a self setting circuit breaker and I never had a problem after that. Also after just a short time the lights on exterior stopped working.

by:

Installed it and used it camping this weekend my only question to myself was why did I wait 3 years to buy this ??.......in one word this electric tongue jack is... AWSOME ...easy installation works perfectly stop thinking about it just buy it you will thank yourself every time you use it.

by:

My previous electric jack shorted out while I was not home, and my battery exploded. I specifically bought this jack to plug it in when ready to use. A little inconvient, but worth the peace of mind. I have to have my engine running in order to operate the jack. Not true for all towing vehicles.

by:

Great product, and great value. I do not expect to have any trouble with this electric jack. By having a jack that runs off the trailer plug on my truck, I will never have the chance of damaging the jack motor due to powering a jack off a battery with less than 12 volts. I installed this on a 26ft camp trailer that was difficult to manually raise or lower due to a back injury....now I can enjoy camping again.

by:

Great product. The only problem I've had is, if you raise the jack, say after hitching up, and then hit raise instead of lower, the fuse in my vehicle blows. If the jack is already topped or bottomed out and you try to go in the wrong direction the fuse for the trailer lights blows. So I just make sure I leave some room in either direction.

Jack was very easy to install, and combined with the eTrailer hitch camera life is much easier.

I am 80 years old and it was hard to manually crank the camper up, The Ultra - Fab UF38-944037 jack was a life saver for me works great.

by:

What I appreciate most about this purchase is the helpful and complete website @ etrailer.com that let me compare various makes and models and learn just which unit to buy. I'm no idiot, but at the same time I didn't exit the womb with complete knowledge of which electric jack to buy.

Because I use a load-leveling hitch, I need to take the weight off the trailer tongue and lift the weight off my truck's frame. For this reason, I bought the highest-rated (in pounds) lift that would fit my 2" mounting hole.

The "Ultra-Fab Electric A-Frame Jack w/ 7-Way Plug - 18" Lift - 3,500 lbs" installed in about 20 minutes and lifts my 20' camper tongue beautifully. Since it's October in VT and the leaves are already turning, I won't have much time to test it before winter, but the early results are simply perfect.

Finally, the price was competitive, the shipping was free, and the shipping was fast. I have come to appreciate etrailer.com as a vendor.

We had problems getting the electrical plug to work with our truck. Used the manual crank on the top to raise and lower it. We worn that part out so had to order another jack. Wired it to the trailer battery directly with an in-line fuse and it has worked perfectly since.

by:

This powered jack works great on my 6x12 enclosed trailer. i have the trailer loaded down with tools and this jack handles the load well. In the past year I have used the jack multiple time a week and never have had an issue. This is a great product for a fair price compared to others.

by:

Being a 71 year old grandmother and travel the festival circuit, I needed this electric jack, I needed something to help me unhitch my truck from my travel trailer, this electric jack was just the answer, it was so easy and a big time saver.

by:

The jack works really well! There was an issue with the first one I received being damaged in shipping but etrailer spoke directly with the manufacturer where it was drop shipped from and they immediately sent a new jack. Wonderful customer service from etrailer and Ultra-fab.

by:

This makes me feel I have been in the dark ages too long. Time after time, I have bent over (with plates and screws in my back) and jack my trailer up and even turning forever to get the leg down. Now, I press button and it is done for me. I have spent more money on a lousy family dinner at a restaurant than this cost. So I ask myself, "What were you thinking?"
I have needed this for a very long time. This even has a 7/way plug! No external battery required...duh.

by:

Glad to have it. EASY installation. Going camping this weekend to try it out, on my 18 foot camper trailer. Nice to not have to do all the hand cranking. Suggested the package include new bolts, rather then requiring use of old bolts. Awesome to just plug it into my vehicle and raise and lower. Nice feature having lights. I recommend it at this time.

by:

Wow! What wonderful quick service! We received the Jack and it worked exactly as expected. The installation was quick and easy. My only concern is that the foot hangs down lower than my previous jack foot. I will be putting a spacer in between the jack and the tongue to be sure my wonderful jack is not damaged by dragging when I go through dips. If you want an easy way to adjust a jack, this is definitely the way to go! I even had to run out in the dark last night and turn on the light to see what it would do. It lights all the items I would need to check or work with at the front of the trailer. I can see the battery, the propane, and the hitch. I love that.

by:

ordered this evening of 1st- arrived afternoon of 4th, very fast. installation was very easy especially since there is no wiring. registered for warranty, cord is just long enough to hook up without connecting to trailer, and it works great. Bought this model because it has fitting to grease it, and has cord to hook up to vehicle(no wiring) price is good. If you use a load equalizing hitch it is very difficult to raise the back of vehicle and trailer tongue by hand without an electric lift.

by:

The Ultra-Fab Electric A-Frame Jack w/ 7-Way Plug - 18" Lift - 3,500 lbs works just fine. Been using it a year now. Works great. Beats cranking by hand.

by:

Bolted right on. No issues. Worked as advertised.

I bought one like it about 6 years ago and I use it about twice a week. The old one was making a horrible sound so I bought the new one. Replaced it before I got stranded with the old one.

by:

This has been a great back saver, was very easy to install, and use. Used the manual jack one time, and decided to replace with electric jack. Especially while traveling, if you have to disconnect and rehook up the trailer.
