How to Determine the Lift Capacity You Need in a Jack

A trailer jack is designed to lift the tongue of your trailer so you can connect the trailer coupler to your hitch ball. To do this, you'll need a jack with a lift capacity high enough to handle your trailer's tongue weight.

Tongue weight is the amount of weight that your trailer applies to the back of your tow vehicle. Typically, your tongue weight should be 10-15% of your total trailer weight (trailer + cargo). In other words, a 10,000-lb trailer would have a tongue weight between 1,000 lbs and 1,500 lbs. For a trailer this size, you would need a jack with a lift capacity of at least 1,500 lbs.

It's okay to have a jack with a weight rating that is higher than your trailer's tongue weight. In fact, a jack with a higher lift capacity should operate more efficiently, allowing you to spend less time cranking and more time camping.

Trailer and Camper Jack Lift

Every jack offers a certain amount of lift or travel. Screw travel is the distance the jack extends when you crank it (or toggle it to "extend" on an electric model). Some jacks include a drop leg for extra adjustability. On these jacks, you'll see the maximum extension of the drop leg listed in the specs as well. Adding the screw travel and drop leg travel together will give you the total lift. The total lift listed above can help you determine how high this jack will be able to raise your trailer.

I purchased this jack because it is the exact same model as the jack installed on the trailer at the factory. I have attached a photo of the one I removed. I had the trailer power washed and the spray damaged the membrane that covered the three switches that operate the jack. The resulting exposure damaged the switches which could not be repaired. Not the best design in my opinion.

The Smart Jack has taken to just clicking when the down arrow is pressed. I have to break out the crank handle to lower the tongue of the trailer. If I have to replace it AGAIN it will not be a Lippert jack. Totally dissatisfied!

We have reached out to Lippert about the switch on the jack. It sounds like the screw or the motor on the jack is damaged as the switch is working and the motor is not. If it is within a year old it is covered under warranty however if not it is time to buy a new one.

ordered overnight and got in a timely f ashion!!!

Gamechanger, so much better than a hand crank

I am replacing my 2 year old Smart Jack. The old one broke. The "buttons" on the Smart Jack are flush and difficult to press sometimes. My biggest complaint is that the plastic covering the "buttons" fade in only 2 years. My wife is sewing a cover to protect it from the sun. I do give 5 GOLD STARS to etrailer.com. Your website is easy to navigate and there is a generous amount of infomation and video on your products.

by:

I own two of these jacks and they've worked well for the most part. The nice feature is the ability to press a combination of buttons and it will either retract or rise to a pre set height without you having to hold down the button, which is very convenient and allows you to hook up other parts of the trailer while it is working.

The downside is one of the jacks immediately developed a crack in the top of it. There was a recall on this jack where a crack would happen and water intrusion would cause the jack to extend when you are driving....not good. My jack wasn't part of the recall, but likely they really didn't fix the problem, so it still happens on some units. I did request a warranty repair and after many back and forth questions about my trailer, they would repair it, but the shipping expense was on me. Now shipping is going to add up to 1/3 or more of the item cost and I also won't have a jack for a little bit, so I'm just going to risk it.

So it is a nice product because the jack has some unique features, however the known issue of the cracking of the unit is kind of annoying.

by:

This jack has plenty of power for raising and lowering my 10,000 lbs camper.
The automatic features are annoying and get in the way of easy operation. The memory setting is useless because it never works. The automatic down works ok.
I regret buying this model and intend to purchase a simple up/down one in the future.
This is the model jack that came standard with my grand design reflection TT. The one that came with the unit new was replaced by recall. The replacement lasted 2 seasons
and cracked causing water to ruin the electrics. I wanted to keep everything stock so purchased the third. I also keep a cover on it to protect that cheap plastic on the controls. I won't hate to see this one go and join his two brothers in jack heaven.
etrailer is great to deal with and I will do business with them in the future.

by:

Kept draining battery and could not work off of the truck when plugged in. Trailer customer service couldn't be reached by phone and never returned email request for help.

by:

Easy to install. Some nice improvements over the older model.

by:

I ordered a few things that day from some other companies and this is the only thing that has made it to me. Very happy with Etrailers being so fast to get my products to me. And it was very easy to instal.

by:

Smart Jack arrived in just a couple days and looks great. Will install later do to weather but expect it will work great.

by:

Just what I needed to keep my arm from getting cramps from winding the stupid crank!

by:

Very easy to install and wire.

by:

Always fast shipping and exactly as des cribed!

  • Is There a Way to Replace Cracked Screen on Lippert Smart Jack
The only way to get a new control panel would be to replace your entire Smart Jack with part # LC643589. I reached out to my contact at Lippert who confirmed that the only replacement parts for the jack includes hardware like the pin or the footplate. With this being the case your best option to protect the buttons is a trailer jack cover like part # UF38-944020. If you'd rather use a different jack then I recommend the Stromberg Carlson # SC63VR because it is rated for 4,500 lbs, features...

  • Why Would Lippert Smart Jack Work and Then Few Hours Later Stop
This is most likely related to the condition of the charge on your camper battery. Is it possibly drained now? That's pretty much only reason why the Lippert Smart Jack part # LC643589 would work and then a few hours later stop.

  • Best Replacement for the Lippert Smart Jack Electric Trailer Jack
The Lippert Smart Jack Electric Trailer Jack part # LC643589 is a good innovative option with memory features but it does have a design flaw in my opinion. The touchpad or controls are on the top of the jack. The reason that this is a problem is because the seals around the controls break down over time and water gets inside ruining the jack. This could be attributed to rough use, bad seals, but the touchpad being directly on the top of the jack means water can come straight in as opposed...

  • Are There Replacement Button Panels Available For The Lippert Smart Jack
The button panel on the Lippert Smart Jack Electric Trailer Jack # LC643589 unfortunately is not a replaceable part. If yours no longer works then the only option would be to replace the jack. If this is the case for you the I recommend switching to a jack where replacement parts are readily available like the Electric Jack w/ Footplate # EJ-3520-BBX.

  • Smart Jack Won't Go Up or Down
I'm sorry the folks at the establishment you purchased the Lippert Smart Jack # LC643589 from were unable to help you. I'm not sure what they told you to do, but what the manufacturer has told us regarding this jack is if it is not operating up or down is to first check the grounded 12 volt power supply it is wired to. That is basically the issue 99% of the time when this occurs. Should that not remedy the problem, remove the fuse in the power wire for 15 minutes which will reset it.

  • Simplifying Attaching Reese Pro Round Bar Weight Distribution On a 2022 Cherokee Wolf Pup 16BHS
The Reese Pro Round Bar Weight Distribution # RE34FR includes a lifting tool to make positioning the bars on the sway brackets easier. As these bars create the friction for the system which reduces trailer sway they should never be greased. Most users will lower the trailer onto the hitch ball and lock the coupler to the ball. Then they will use the tongue jack to raise the trailer up which will make installing the spring bars much easier. If your 2022 Forest River Cherokee Wolf Pup 16BHS...

  • Can Lippert Smart Powered Jack LC643589 Install Rotated
Since the mounting flange of the Lippert Smart Jack Electric Trailer Jack w/ Footplate # LC643589 is a triangle and not a square you can't mount it perfectly at a 90 degree angle if you were to rotate it but you certainly could if you wanted to. Since two of the mounting holes are slotted there is some wiggle room in how it can attach too. I am not sure what Chris meant by it not being a clean install though as it would work just fine. Torque specs will be based on the size and grade...

  • Replacement Tongue Jack For Lippert Jack 1817941 That Is Hesitating and Skipping Gear Teeth
Since Lippert does not carry any replacement parts to fix the skipping that you are experiencing, my recommendation is to replace it with the Lippert Smart Jack Electric Trailer Jack # LC643589. This new smart jack will make using your trailer much easier. You will be able to set your hitch height so there is no more guessing how far you need to adjust the hitch hitch height from when you parked the trailer. You can also fully retract the jack without having to hold the button.

The Lippert Electric A Frame Jack part # LC285318 would be a great option. Basically you pick out a jack capacity based on the tongue weight of the trailer. Your trailer that weighs 12,500 lbs would have a tongue weight capacity of right at 1,200 lb which the Lippert jack you mentioned has a lifting capacity of 3,500 lbs so that wouldn't be a problem at all.
