How to Determine the Lift Capacity You Need in a Jack

A trailer jack is designed to lift the tongue of your trailer so you can connect the trailer coupler to your hitch ball. To do this, you'll need a jack with a lift capacity high enough to handle your trailer's tongue weight.

Tongue weight is the amount of weight that your trailer applies to the back of your tow vehicle. Typically, your tongue weight should be 10-15% of your total trailer weight (trailer + cargo). In other words, a 10,000-lb trailer would have a tongue weight between 1,000 lbs and 1,500 lbs. For a trailer this size, you would need a jack with a lift capacity of at least 1,500 lbs.

It's okay to have a jack with a weight rating that is higher than your trailer's tongue weight. In fact, a jack with a higher lift capacity should operate more efficiently, allowing you to spend less time cranking and more time camping.

Trailer and Camper Jack Lift

Every jack offers a certain amount of lift or travel. Screw travel is the distance the jack extends when you crank it (or toggle it to "extend" on an electric model). Some jacks include a drop leg for extra adjustability. On these jacks, you'll see the maximum extension of the drop leg listed in the specs as well. Adding the screw travel and drop leg travel together will give you the total lift. The total lift listed above can help you determine how high this jack will be able to raise your trailer.

This is awesome and so easy to install. Took longer to open the box then to set it up. We had ordered something similar to this for our old camper. It took us hours to get it to fit right. This was extremely easy to install. My husband loves the memory feature on this thing.

Best addition to my trailer, wish I got it sooner!

I love this jack. I truly wish i had bought it sooner. Its made my trailer changes so much faster and it diesnt break my back cranking the jack the old way. I can even hook up in the rain without getting out of my truck! Only ussue i have is the double tap option going up stopped working so i just have to hold it the whole time.

by:

My order arrived damaged. etrailer was immediate to remedy. The same day a return for pickup at my home and a new item was shipped out. I plan on installing the jack tomorrow.

by:

A great investment for my trailer as I have a lifted truck and a weight distribution hitch that was not able to function properly with the standard manual cranking jack to detach from the truck. It used to be such a chore to unhook and now its as easy as a touch of a button. I would give this jack 5 stars but the remote doesn't work sometimes and it's hard to use the remote. The extra light on the jack is great for late night arrivals when you need to see what your doing behind your truck.

by:

I used this electric jack to replace a failed the original electric jack that I had. I am using this on a 24' enclosed trailer that at times gets loaded heavy and this jack has had no issues raising the trailer to put it on the truck. The remote is just an bonus feature that I didn't think that I really needed. now I use it all of the time.

by:

The first jack we received failed in the control circuit after the first use. Ultra-Fab was very good about sending a replacement jack after some brief troubleshooting. The second jack has performed well for the past year. It hasn't struggled at all to lift our trailer and the remote is a very convenient feature... although the remote control occasionally struggles with keeping a good signal and requires pushing the buttons repeatedly.

by:

The jack outperforms the old jack by far!! I have it wired directly to the battery and has performed great. It goes up and down quickly. It also has enough torque to raise the trailer and truck to easily install my equalizer hitch arms with ease. I haven't tried the remote to level yet though. Overall very pleased with the purchase and would highly recommend to anyone who is searching for a heavy duty electric jack.

by:

quick response when I order my trailer jack

by:

Jack arrived damaged. Plastic cover was smashed in and circuit board was also damaged. Extremely poor packaging for such a heavy bulky item. I gave it an additional star because the phone representative was helpful and said a new one would be sent out. All this could have been avoided with proper packing.

We recently sent you a new jacks with cover and were wondering if you had any feedback about the product for other shoppers? I look forward to hearing from you.

by:

I purchased this product to replace one that has given me good service for several years but which I felt I was working it to close to its limits. My selection of this electric tongue jack was for it's 5500 Lb rated load capability but I do like both the remote control unit (that comes with it) as well as the Jack's face plate controls that also have a memory function for both up and down positions. I was surprised how well the unit worked with the factory memory calibration settings for my application which made the installation go much faster. While I had to run an extra 10 guage ground wire back to the battery, I like that they do this to make sure there is no possible chance of the jack motor not being properly grounded. The only reason I did not give it all 5 stars is because I reserve the highest rating until I am able to see from experience that it is warranted.

by:

Still working great!

by:

The product we received is great but the customer service we received from etrailer.com was the best! Our original order was damaged in transit and we contacted etrailer. They immediately shipped us a new unit and supplied us with a shipping label to send the damaged unit back. They couldn't have made it any easier. Very pleased!

by:

We got the jack installed on the trailer. So far I am happy with it. Easy to program the position memory buttons and no issues doing so. My only concern is if we have a power failure, cranking the jack by hand is next to impossible. Time will tell, with the warranty, I'm not concerned. If it fails, I will let you know!

by:

Jack broke 6 mobthes after I installed it.

These jacks come with a two year warranty and a ten year warranty if registered in the first ninety days. I will have our customer service reach out to you regarding your options for a warranty claim.

by:

Fast shipping Haven't installed yet but will when the weather improves

by:

should have bought it when I bought my trailer

by:

I really like this jack - it's the Cadillac of jacks. It zips up and down quickly, and it's great that you can double tap the up or down button and it will go all the way up or all the way down. I like the memory functions as well - very helpful.

Caveat, I've only used it for a few days. I hope it holds up!

by:

Met all my specifications . Price was very competitive.
Delivered on time.
Installation was simple.
It works better than described.

by:

It stopped working, now I just use a ratchet to operate it

I would like to ask you a few questions to see if I can trouble shoot with the jack. How long did you have the jack before it stopped working electronically? Have you checked the power and ground wiring? Does it work with the remote? What is the weight of the trailer? And what is the weight of the tongue weight of the trailer? The jack does have a 10 year warranty. I would like to reach out to the manufacturer for you and these are the questions that they will ask.

by:

this is working great, the remote is a very handy addition

This thing is a beast!!! still going strong . I have had zero problems , well it does pick the whole rear end of the truck up with it if Im not looking, lol

by:

Installed the first one. Didn’t work. Manufacturer sent a new one. Worked with remote only. Manufacturer sent a third one. We sent them all back. Sad piece of equipment

by:

it makes a grinding /clunking noise without any weight on it

I had to send the first one retailer sent me back because they sent me one that was defective. It takes time to return stuff. Waiting was a problem. When I got the second one it worked well and still does but the cheezy LED light burt out within 30 days. I sure as hell was going to take more time out of my life to deal with it so I live with a broken light. It seems to me that when you pay [XX] dollars you should receive a quality product, not crap. 4 stars is too high of a rating.

by:

GOT THE RIGHT PART, AND SHIPPING OVER NIGHT WASN'T NEAR AS BAD AS I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE.
GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE.

I'd be more than happy to help you find an electric jack for your 2016 Dutchmen Coleman Light M-2305QB Travel Trailer! I really like the Ultra Fab Phoenix jack part # UF38-944055 that you referenced. This would be a really great option to replace your manual jack. It has more than enough capacity as it can lift up to 5,500 lbs and also is one of the fastest moving jacks out there as it can raise and lower in just a matter of seconds. Other electric jacks take quite a bit of time to raise and lower.

The Ultra-Fab Phoenix Electric Trailer Jack with Remote- 5,500 lbs # UF38-944055 or 4,000 lb # UF38-944040 without remote sounds like it may have a mechanical issue. Basically, the higher the capacity of the jack used the easier it will be for the jack to operate and the longer it will last. The highest capacity A-frame jack that we have is # UF38-944055. It's rated up to 5,500 pounds and also has the highest lift of any of our jacks at 26 inches. A trailer that weighs 7,500 pounds would have a tongue weight around 750 to 1,125 pounds (10 to 15 percent of the gross trailer weight) so a jack rated for 4,000 or 4,500 pounds could handle it with ease.
