Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Ordered 14 inch rims and tires for my 2007 Jayco travel trailer. Easy ordering, prompt delivery, easy to install, very satisfied with every aspect of etrailer!!!

Were your original rims 13 inch? I have 13 inch rims with ST18580D13 bias ply load range D tires on my Jayco Jayfeather Ultralite 228 trailer and am looking to switch to radials in load range D... These are about as close to the original tire size as I can find. If you did up-size from smaller rims and tires, how is it working out for you?
-- comment by: ErnestA - 06/28/2014
Ernest,Yes I had 13 18580D13s as standard equipment. Put on Hankook 195 75R14 8 ply load range D 2094 lbs at 65psi. Tires fit fine. There is hardly any difference in the width and height increased maybe 1 inch. I have taken the trailer on logging roads with pot holesbad washboard without any issues. With the 13 inch tires on i had 2 clearance on each side and about 7-8 from the top of tire to the wheel well Jayco will not give you any help and Dexter, axle manufacture, sent information but to check the clearances out required a lift which i did not have. Common sense dictated the 14 tires would work and they do. Hope this helps just check the side wall and top clearances.Hope this helpsclearances

2200 lbs carrying capacity
mounted single, 75lbs maximum inflation. My travel trailer specifications require that level of strength. Also capable of 80 miles per hour of speed which is good because I travel to some pretty wide open spaces where speed limits are high.,

Awesome customer service. The item I originally ordered was out of stock. George promptly notified me and offered an acceptable alternative. The speed of delivery was awesome!

The tires are load range D #2040 lb. are common , but I needed the #2200 lb. G.V.W. plate #4330 lb. And they shipped them in boxes.

If you need anything, eTrailer is the place!!!

I have ordered multiple items over the years and have always received excellent customer service, great products, and quick shipping.

The most recent order was the Karrier "D" rated tire, which I have ordered 4 others of the same from eTrailer. This is one of the best trailer tires I have used in over 30 years of boating, and one of the few "D" rated 14" tires that meet my load requirements.

These things ride amazing, no flat spots from sitting in the off-season, traction and wear is excellent. I don't see how you could get a better tire or at this price anywhere.

I ordered tires, white wheels and baby moons for my camper. I am extremely happy with the finished look. I would highly recommend these products,

Bought 2 of these tires in 2015, just bought another to replace one that had serious blowout at 60 mph after 16,000 miles. Fortunately no damage from the blowout. Very happy with the tires up until then and not sure of cause of the blowout. It was the tire on the passenger side so maybe picked up something on roadside, rumble strips or hitting a curb. I still like the higher air pressure and load capacity so that's why I got another one. I use these on a single axle light weight travel trailer. I'm including pics of damaged tire and comparison of new and used (~20,000 mi.) I think the wear rate is good for a trailer.

Great price and really quick shipping.

Tires arrived in good condition in three days, individually boxed. Had them mounted today on my Lance travel trailer and they look great, much better than the Tow-Max tires they are replacing. Only minor surprise was that the DOT date code on the tires indicates the tires were manufactured around mid 2017. Nevertheless, they look great and I am confident my BAD experiences (three) with "Blow-Max" brand tires are over.

Concerning etrailer, this is one of many purchases I've made over the past 10 years and I have always been impressed with the EXCELLENT customer service, product information and instructive videos, communications, pricing, and product selection. IMHO etrailer is one of the best retailers on the web and I highly recommend them to all.

Tires continue to perform well, NO FLATS OR BLOW.OUTS. Tites hold pressure extremely well, rarely do I need to add air between trips. I use TireMinders to monitor the tire while on the road, I am very satisfied with them as well.
Jack S - 06/06/2020

This is my 3rd or 4th transaction with etrailer and each one has been great! Fast shipping and quality products. They will continue to be the first place I look when I need anything for our camper or my truck! The Kendra tires look great. Will update after a summer to see how they pull.

I put them on a 28' enclosed snowmobile trailer to replace my 8 year old tires that looked good on the outside but were blowing up on the highway. I put about 2000 miles on these so far. I'm towing about 6000 lbs. They track nice, and are holding up well.

Good Tire from a great company. This is the only Load Range D tire I could find in a 14" rim size but this tire has been an excellent purchase. I could not be happier with my purchase and my tire dealer was happy to mount them because they knew that they did not sell a load range D tire in a 14".

Great tire. After another year of use the tires still look like new. The load range D tires carry the weight better and gives me great peace of mind.
Go E - 10/11/2018

They are working well and they carry my boat great

Great Tire so far, However you guys sent me two wrong center caps for the wheels . Two came in black and two chrome all should have been black .

This would have been remedied quickly by customer service. However, since it has been past 60 days, the return mark is over and we cannot reship the correct items.

So I ordered these tires on the 19th and arrived on the 21st. Fast shipping. I havent installed them yet. But will soon. Overall impressions of this tire is very good so far. Came shipped in individual boxes. Will rereview after i get them installed and have a few miles on them.

So far these tires have exceeded my expectations. The wear is minimal and tracks good. No problems.2.5k miles.
Jason O - 03/24/2020

Love the tire. Bounced it off the curb multiple times, drove it thousands of miles at 80+. Plus getting it through etrailer was simple and quick. Delivery in just a few days.

work well. Handle heavy load well.

I bought two tires for my pontoon boat it had one axle under it tires are awesome and now I'm in the process of putting a second axle under the boat so I ordered two more tires for the new axle, old ones holding up great. Better pic later

Holding up great so far.

This is a great trailer tire! I purchased these for my R-Pod 182G (I'm guessing around 3500lbs fully loaded) for a cross-country road trip. I wanted a more robust tire so I could travel at 70 mph without constantly worrying if the tires would blow-out. 3800 miles in two weeks and the tires handled perfectly and still look new. I filled them with nitrogen because I was traversing a wide range of elevations (7200'-500') and I didn't want to worry about pressure fluctuations. They were filled to 65psi when the tires were a little warm so they ended up being about 60psi when cold, but they never got above 70psi when hot. This is a great tire if you have a trailer that usually uses a Load Range "C", 6 ply tire.
E-trailer made my order very painless, offering free shipping, which I had to forgo and pay $7.95 for 3-5 day shipping, because I needed them that week. The tires arrived in great shape in 3 days.

Free shipping and they were placed right on my porch by the front door.

From product description. To sale to customer service outstanding. Truth b told I want a US made tire. None available until 2022 from Goodyear why! No one knows. I was constantly informed of changes and delivery dates from customer service. I then changed focus on new tire whole made in China only thing available, go figure. With the continued assistance from customer service I made another selection for my need it was the customer service reason I repurchased thru e trailer not someplace else. If they responded to my needs and kept me update on tire purchase just think how great they will be should I have any issues with warranty of my purchases

Working great. The piece of mind provided by properly rated, balanced tires on my single axle trailer is phenomenal.

Great company

I really wanted a D load rated 205/75-14 tire for my travel trailer. But, as with many Chinese imports, the quality just isn't there. Two had catastrophic failures. One of the survivors has part of the steel belt protruding from the casing where the tread meets the sidewall. I'm thinking I will switch to Goodyear Endurance which are American made and are also available from etrailer.

If you have the clearance I would strongly recommend you go with the Karrier ST205/75R14 Radial Trailer Tire # AM10235 since not only is this tire higher rated than what you have it is also rated for use on a trailer unlike the P195/75R14 that you are currently running which is designed to be used on passenger vehicles. • What is the Speed Rating for Karrier ST205/75R14 Radial Trailer Tire
Trailer tire # AM10235 is rated for 81 miles per hour maximum. Occasionally going above 81 miles an hour is not a big deal but you would not run it consistently over its speed rating. The issue is that trailer tires are built with a thicker side wall to handle more vertical load. This thicker side wall also means that the tire can generate more heat. Higher speeds create even more heat. You will want to avoid doing anything that will increase the amount of heat the tire can potentially...

  • How Much Air Pressure Should be Put in a Boat Trailer Tire
Trailer tires should always be inflated to the maximum psi as indicated on the tire regardless of the load on the trailer. The reason for this is because of how trailer tires are constructed. Trailer tires are made with a thicker sidewall than passenger vehicle tires to handle more vertical load. If they are under inflated, the thicker sidewall will then generate excessive heat and cause the tire to fail. I have included a link to our help article on trailer tires for you.
