Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Ordered 14 inch rims and tires for my 2007 Jayco travel trailer. Easy ordering, prompt delivery, easy to install, very satisfied with every aspect of etrailer!!!

Were your original rims 13 inch? I have 13 inch rims with ST18580D13 bias ply load range D tires on my Jayco Jayfeather Ultralite 228 trailer and am looking to switch to radials in load range D... These are about as close to the original tire size as I can find. If you did up-size from smaller rims and tires, how is it working out for you?

Jim Y.

Ernest,Yes I had 13 18580D13s as standard equipment. Put on Hankook 195 75R14 8 ply load range D 2094 lbs at 65psi. Tires fit fine. There is hardly any difference in the width and height increased maybe 1 inch. I have taken the trailer on logging roads with pot holesbad washboard without any issues. With the 13 inch tires on i had 2 clearance on each side and about 7-8 from the top of tire to the wheel well Jayco will not give you any help and Dexter, axle manufacture, sent information but to check the clearances out required a lift which i did not have. Common sense dictated the 14 tires would work and they do. Hope this helps just check the side wall and top clearances.Hope this helpsclearances

purchased 2 Kenda trailer tires, date on tires were 2 months less than 3 years old. I HAVE BEEN PURCHASING TIRES, WHEELS AND OTHER ITEMS FROM E-TRAILER FOR MORE THAN 12YEARS.NEEDLESS TO SAY THE TIRES WERE SHIPPED BACK.As AN e-trailer customer, not at all happy with this purchase.

Etrailer has never let me down!

Ive had no issues or concerns with these tires over the past year.

Trailer camping is seasonal here in Colorado, so it took me a while to get the tires mounted and put to use. Now that they are on the road, I'm very pleased with them and feel much safer traveling on good rubber!

The tires are perfect, just what I needed. The Redarc break controller was easy to install with the plug and play wire harness for my 2013 Tacoma and it works great. Shipping was fast and reliable.

For the packaging the tires each had there strong cardboard box however, the Redarc break controller box was put in with one of the tire boxes and definitely took a light beating and almost fell out of its package. It still works fine and I’m happy to have it but etrailer I don’t think that’s a great idea to just put in with the tire box not protected. It could crack the plastic casing of the break controller housing and mess up its calibration . It makes sense for shipping to put with the tire but at least should give it some protection from the tire.

Order arrived earlier than expected. Order processes was extremely easy. Exactly what we wanted. Will be ordering all our trailer tires from them from here on our.

Ordering through Etrailer was easy. I was struggling to find the tire for my trailer and they made it easy.

So I ordered these tires on the 19th and arrived on the 21st. Fast shipping. I havent installed them yet. But will soon. Overall impressions of this tire is very good so far. Came shipped in individual boxes. Will rereview after i get them installed and have a few miles on them.

Jason O.

So far these tires have exceeded my expectations. The wear is minimal and tracks good. No problems.2.5k miles.

I can't say anything about it, as it was bought to replace a 10 yr old, rotted spare tire on my travel trailer. It balanced out good and still holds air, but has never been on the ground.

I ordered these tires for my rv trailer because my old tires were 7 years old and I had a blowout on one of them. The tires I received are already 2 years old according to the build dates on them. That doesn’t make me happy. I know you say they are kept in a climate controlled warehouse and all that , but who really knows. If I need more tires in the future I’ll look somewhere else.

Bought 2 of these tires in 2015, just bought another to replace one that had serious blowout at 60 mph after 16,000 miles. Fortunately no damage from the blowout. Very happy with the tires up until then and not sure of cause of the blowout. It was the tire on the passenger side so maybe picked up something on roadside, rumble strips or hitting a curb. I still like the higher air pressure and load capacity so that's why I got another one. I use these on a single axle light weight travel trailer. I'm including pics of damaged tire and comparison of new and used (~20,000 mi.) I think the wear rate is good for a trailer.

Perfect match to what I had originally. Got it mounted this morning and back on the trailer. Ready for the next adventure.
Thanks again And a shout out to Justin for being helpful on all my orders. is my go-to for all of my trailer needs.

If you need anything, eTrailer is the place!!!

I have ordered multiple items over the years and have always received excellent customer service, great products, and quick shipping.

The most recent order was the Karrier "D" rated tire, which I have ordered 4 others of the same from eTrailer. This is one of the best trailer tires I have used in over 30 years of boating, and one of the few "D" rated 14" tires that meet my load requirements.

These things ride amazing, no flat spots from sitting in the off-season, traction and wear is excellent. I don't see how you could get a better tire or at this price anywhere.

Delivered sooner than promised! Have made one long 1800 mile road trip with rain and bad roads. Tires performed great. Trailer tracks well. Sat in storage for 4 winter months with no loss of tire pressure. Very satisfied so far.

So far I am pleased with my purchase the only problem is the steel valve stem washer does not fit these wheels and the washer needed is a very special size that is not easy to find. I ended up having to mount them with standard stems.

We've ordered these tires multiple times for a number of different trailers, they last a long time, durable and great prices.

This is my 3rd or 4th transaction with etrailer and each one has been great! Fast shipping and quality products. They will continue to be the first place I look when I need anything for our camper or my truck! The Kendra tires look great. Will update after a summer to see how they pull.

One year in and going strong. No issues at all after several long trips. The tires barely show wear and we are very happy with the purchase!

Quality was what I expected and delivery was even better than expected. I mounted the tire myself and everything worked great. The only issue I have is with the cost of the tire, but what do you do about this crazy inflation? I could not expect anything more from etrailer and will definitely buy from them again!

After checking all tire dealers in Tucson for a trailer tire with a load rating of 2200 lbs I found these at Etrailer! My trailer already has these and I needed a new set. Great tires..

Working great. The piece of mind provided by properly rated, balanced tires on my single axle trailer is phenomenal.

These tires were just what we needed. Long life and higher speed rating. After a couple of trips with our 16' Forest River Wolf Pup these tires have held up beautifully. Running these at 70 mph is no problem with the speed rating.
etrailer always has the best price and plenty of helpful information.

Fast shipping, good to go.

I bought two tires for my pontoon boat it had one axle under it tires are awesome and now I'm in the process of putting a second axle under the boat so I ordered two more tires for the new axle, old ones holding up great. Better pic later

E Trailer is my new go to online location for all my trailer needs. I have made two good size purchases and the operators where a new benchmark in customer. When I called for an update the service was over the top. I just want to say it is really refreshing to find this kind of service and the product quality is second to NONE.

Customer service representative, H, was very helpful and courteous! Good value on the trailer tires and expedient delivery!

  • What Tire Pressure for Trailer Tires that are Size 205/75-14
On the sidewall of your tire will be a max psi rating. That's the pressure you should put in the tire when it is cold. So for the tire # AM10235 you'd need to inflate the tires to 75 psi when cold.

  • What is Difference Between Trailer Tire Sizes 205/75-14 and 205/75-15
The last two number in a trailer size is the diameter wheel that it was designed to fit. This basically is only number where there is no leeway on fitting it to different sizes. So since you currently have the size ST205/75R14 that means you have to stick with a tire designed for a 14 inch wheel like the # AM10235 which is a Load Range D in the size you are needing and has a higher speed rating.

  • Determining Wheel Width on Jayco 212QB Travel Trailer With St205/75R14 Tires
A tire like the Karrier ST205/75R14 Radial Trailer Tire - Load Range D # AM10235 can fit a variety of different wheel widths so it is not possible to determine the width from just the tire. This tire size fits 14" x 5", 14" x 5-1/2", 14" x 6", and 14" x 6-1/2" wheels. Most wheels will have their size stamped on the back side so I would start by checking there to see if you can find the width. If you are unable to locate this you will have to measure. To find the width of a trailer wheel...

Tire stock age will vary based on tire size. The more popular a tire is the quicker our inventory will turn over and the younger a tire will be when we ship it. I went to our warehouse to check the date code on our current inventory of the tire you referenced, Kenda Karrier ST205/75R14 Tire # AM10235. • Can a Load Range C Tire Be Replaced with a Load Range D Tire
Yes, you can replace your load range C tires with load range D tires without issue. It will only become any issue when you go down load ranges, not up. The tires will have the same overall diameter as long as they are the same size regardless of their load range. If you are looking for a recommendation on a 205/75-14 tire I recommend the Karrier ST205/75R14 Radial Trailer Tire part # AM10235. This tire has a radial construction which is better for long highway hauls, a load range D rating...

  • Recommended Replacement Tire & Wheel for Horse Trailer with Living Quarters
Unless otherwise noted all trailer tires are only rated for up to 65 miles per hour. Going faster than that causes heat to build up which then causes the tires to fail. There should be a sticker or plate on the trailer tongue or frame somewhere that lists the proper tires for that trailer. You can also check the tire size on the trailer now and go by that. If you can find the tire size I will be glad to make a recommendation for you. I'll link you to some helpful articles about trailer tires.

  • What is the Tread Depth of the Kenda AM10235?
I spoke with Kenda and the Karrier ST205/75R14 Radial Trailer Tire # AM10235 has a tread depth of 8mm. This also has a max capacity of 2,200 pounds at 75 psi and an M speed rating (81 miles an hour).

  • What Would Cause Trailer Tire Size ST205/75R14 to Fail Early
Typically what causes premature trailer tire failure is exceeding the speed rating or the weight capacity. Both of these cause excess heat to build up which then causes the tire to fail. The Load Range D ST205/75R14 like part # AM10235 has a speed rating of 81 mph and a weight capacity of 2,200 lbs at 75 psi. So this could help your situation but it depends on why your tire is failing. Are you inflating the tires to the max psi rating on them?

  • Should I Inflate Cold Tire to Maximum PSI to Allow for Heat Buildup
You are correct, Kenda Karrier # 10235 is rated for 75 PSI. It is always recommended to inflate trailer tires to max psi because it extends their life, cuts down on wear and allows them to be used at the maximum weight capacity. You should inflate your tires to this max psi of 75 when cold, they have already accounted for heat build up.

  • Maximum Capacity of Load Range D Karrier ST205/75R14 Radial Trailer Tire on Tandem Axle Trailer
The Karrier ST205/75R14 Radial Trailer Tire - Load Range D # AM10235 has a maximum capacity of 2,200 lbs when inflated to its max 75 psi per tire; having a dual axle does not change this rating. So what this means is if you have a tandem axle trailer (four tires) and four of the Karrier # AM10235 they will have a combined capacity of 8,800 lbs when each is inflated to 75 psi. I have added a link to a video review of this tire for you to check out.

  • DOT Codes on # AM10235 Trailer Tires
First of all thanks for your previous purchase. Of course we love repeat customers. As for the 205/75R14 tires, part # AM10235, they're a radial tire with a maximum capacity of 2,200 pounds at 75 psi. Date codes are of course important but maybe not as much as a lot of research leads you to believe. As long as the tires were manufactured within the last couple of years they're still good tires as long as they're store properly out of the elements. We keep our tires in our warehouse...

  • Solution for Overly Bouncy Trailer with Bias-Ply Tires
You always want to run trailer tires at their max psi. Not only does that ensure that you get the full weight capacity, but it also prevents the tire from building too much heat which would cause the tire to fail. A better option for you would be to go with a radial tire as they flex more than a bias-ply which would help with the bouncing you are experiencing. Since I don't know what size tire you have you would need to select your tire size from the filters on the page I attached to see...
