Simple Removal for Full Bed Access

B&W Companion Simple Removal

With the Companion from B&W, you get a heavy-duty fifth-wheel trailer hitch that mounts in your truck bed by connecting directly to a custom underbed mounting kit (sold separately) with the included components. No modifications are required to your truck or trailer. And no additional parts are required for the system to work. When you're done towing, the entire hitch can be removed for complete bed access.

Quiet, Secure Ride

The 1" thick jaw on the Companion is precision machined to provide a tight, sturdy connection. And unlike slide-bar models, the rounded 2-piece jaw on this fifth-wheel trailer hitch inhibits rattle and movement by securely wrapping around your trailer's king pin, resulting in easier hookup and a safer, quieter ride.

B&W Companion Bushings

In addition to the sturdy jaw, the Companion has durable polyurethane bushings built in to provide a smoother, more comfortable towing experience. These bushings sit on top of the pivot arms that support the fifth-wheel head. Because the head is resting on a padded area, it is able to pivot without clanking. The ability of the head to pivot - both front to back and side to side - along with the trailer also helps to limit the chucking that may occur with a more static hitch.

Non-Binding Latch Handle

The dual jaw on the Companion is operated by a simple-to-use cam-action handle. This handle allows you to quickly and easily release the jaws on the hitch, even if you are on uneven terrain. If any binding does occur between your truck and trailer, the jaws may remain closed after you move the handle to the open position. But because the handle is unlatched, there is nothing keeping the jaws closed except for the binding pressure. Therefore, simply driving your truck forward will be enough to force the jaws to open.

The cam-action handle is held in the closed position with the included pin and clip. For extra security, you can replace the pin with a sturdy padlock. The shackle on the lock you choose should have a diameter of 5/16", height of 3", and a width of 2-1/4".

Built-In Slider

Most often used on trucks with 6' beds, a slider helps to eliminate clearance problems during slow-speed turns. When you are towing a fifth-wheel trailer, your hitch must be situated on the cab side of your truck's rear axle. However, at slow speeds you can use a slider to slide the fifth-wheel hitch (and the trailer) toward your truck's tailgate and past the rear axle, creating enough space between the cab of your truck and the trailer to permit less-restricted turning.

The slider that is built into the base of the Companion allows for 12" of fore and aft travel to give you the clearance you need.

Assembly of the B&W Companion

The Companion's pivot arms are what allow the hitch to be adjusted front to back as well as up and down for optimal positioning. As a result, this hitch can accommodate the height of your trailer and also help to give you some additional cab clearance. To adjust either the height of the hitch or the fore/aft positioning, just attach the hitch's pivot arms in the desired location on the base.

The hitch head installs on top of the pivot arms. When you have the head in position, simply secure it to the arms with the included pins.

Too heavy for one person to install unless you did what I had to do (alone without any help). Removed the bolt from the tailgate end of the roller tubes, pulled the tubes out and separated the upper assemble from the lower bed contact assembly. Doing that allowed me to lift each piece into the bed without tracking down a neighbor.

Excellent hitch. If your truck doesn't come with factory 5th wheel hitch prep, the combination of the turnover ball and this hitch works like a charm. Easy to connect to truck and disconnect. Towed for hundreds of miles. Highly recommend.

I haven't used the products yet, but the B&W Companion 5th wheel hitch came on a pallet and was not damaged at all. It's in the truck and ready to go. Looks great!

Comments
I still really like this 5th wheel. It is very nice to be able to make much sharper turns with a short bed pickup. It is also much more stable than the previous hitch. I think that is due to torqueing the hitch down to the pin, although doing so makes it more of a pain to install and remove. Lastly, get an overhead hoist and a $12 movers dolly. The combination makes installation, removal, and moving around a one man job.

Great hitch, very well made and heavy!! Etrailer did everything they said they would do, the frieght company on the other hand, not so much. The hitch was delivered to me 1 week late. Looking forward to many years of towing.

I installed the hitch myself, watched the videos from etrailer, followed the instructions, and have had NO problems at all,we have been on 7 state wide trips, (North Carolina) and hitch has preformed with out flaws. I will use etrailer for other towing needs that comes up.

The hitch works great and the slider has got me in and out of a couple of tight places that I have found myself in. The hitch is heavy and takes up a lot of real estate in my bed but I don’t think that’s a bad thing when pulling a 15k 40ft 5th wheel. Easy to operate and locks up tight and secure. Great product as expected.

Comments
Still works great. Have taken quite a few trips around my state and a nice trip to the beach. This hitch has allowed me to get into places that I shouldn’t and get out of those place I dang sure shouldn’t have tried to fit.

This this is heavy and strong. The only thing that did not meet my expectation is the draw down bolt prevents the hitch from being removed by simply opening the gooseneck locking pin. But the drawdown bolt keeps this hitch quite in the bed and tight, no rattling when unloaded! Great product and customer support!

I've had this for about a year. Only have about 2,000 miles of use with a 13,000 lbs 5th wheel travel trailer. It is still like new. Jaws are tight, no rattles with or without the trailer attached. I use a nylon guide plate, to keep things clean. The only issue is the slider will not unlatch from the locked position with the trailer attached. Unlatch and slides fine when not loaded. Just haven't made the time to talk to B&W about this. The base is a heavy bugger, and fits snug in the receptical. I've lifted it in and out myself, but not a smart idea. Overall I would buy again. For our use, where we need the whole bed the majority of time it is an easy solution.

Comments
Youll want to make sure that the slider rails are lubricated. Also keep in mind that if the truck and trailer are at different angles and theres a lot of pressure placed on the sliding mechanism, it can bind.

A year later, and it still works the same. Slider still doesnt work. but havent needed it. One thing I have learned is to make sure the lug from the attachment is lubricated before placed into the receiver. After about 8 months of being in the bed, I tried to remove it. Whoah! That was a son of a gun. Finally got it to break free, and then it lifted out. both the lug of the companion hitch, and the receiver of the B&W are nicely powder coated. that powder coating locked together. Nothing patience and a pry bar couldnt fix. But I dont want a repeat. Over all, I may look at something easier for our next travel season.

Works great. Love the slide feature. Let's me move the clack back so I can fuel up the generator without needing to unhook. Coach just floates behind truck with this hitch. Super simple to hookup and unhook as well.

Was as described very heavy, I would have given 5 stars but after installing I tried to take up. Not gonna happen unless I have some kind of hoist.

Comments
Very Good, just wish I had got without slider as never use this part. When I tried to use it it would the fifth wheel would hit to of tail gate. I have no problem at cab of truck when forward. E trailer is my first choice when I make a purchase for my truck.

I bought the B&W Companion 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch w/ Slider along with the B&W Turnover Ball. Both are very solid builds and installation was spot on with directions and videos. The quality of the hitch is bar none. I bought this in preparation for my new fifth wheel RV arrival. I cannot wait to put it to use. As a new RV owner, I wanted a product and manufacture I could depend on. I bought this from etrailer.com because they are also a company I can depend on when I have questions. The only drawback is the unit is very heavy and requires a two or three-person lift. To overcome this, I am installing an electric hoist in my garage.

- BWRVK3400-5W
by:

Just started 5th wheel camping and wanted a hitch that when removed left my truck box bare. I also talked to alot of people who talked about clunking and noise from their hitch while towing. I bought a 2013 32' Coachman which is pushing my 2009 F150 to its max. When pulling with this hitch it feels like the truck and trailer are one unit. No noise and no slop between the two units. I made a lifting pin that goes into the jaws and lifts it out with a comealong hooked to a rafter support in my garage. I then put it onto a wheel cart I made. No heavy lifting and one person can do it all. I've had one teflon foot fall of the hitch and the service was amazing no questions, no pictures, and no waiting. New piece was sent right away. Anyone who tows now and has looked at the hit are very impressed. I would definitly recomend this hitch to everyone.

Our driveway makes an “S” turn from a narrow private road. The sliding hitch make it do-able. So far zero problems. We have the turnover ball type and love it. Workings on adjusting our friends puck mounted slider tomorrow. Pucks aren’t adjusted properly and binding the slider rails. May need to back off the rollers but not sure. Doesn’t seem to be videos for the slider system, especially the puck system. Still would buy the companion hitch system after one year of us and 10k + miles.

I love my B&W Companion Slider. I got it for my 2012 Chevy Silverado 2500HD. It was simple to install as the instructions were very plain. Also, videos are available to show exactly how to install. My last fifth wheel hitch was a Reese. I liked it, until I used my brother's B&W last fall. The B&W is more expensive, but it is worth every penny. Several times while towing, I had to look back and make sure the rv was still there, no banging, clanging or other loud noises. I didn't have to use the slider this trip, but it operates perfectly. The only drawback I have is the weight. I could lift and install the Reese by hand. Now, with the B&W, I use the front end loader on my tractor and can set it in the bed, allowing me to install it by myself. The craftsmanship on this hitch is top notch.

The new hitch arrived in good condition and packed well. I had it installed within 2 hours with no problems. I tend to gauge a good product, especially when made in the USA, by its appearance and weight, but I also noticed the welds and paint as something you can't get anywhere else but in the US. I look forward to using it and adding to my review.

  • How Pick Arm Location for B and W Companion Hitch for 2019 Ford F-250 with Factory Rail Kit
Since you have a 2019 Ford F-250 short bed with the factory rail kit the correct B and W Companion Slider hitch is the # BWRVK3370 and the # BWRVK3400-5W you referenced. I attached a picture that explains all of the arm location positions for you to check out. I'd go with the rear most position since you have a short bed truck. It gives you better clearance but the king pin will still be carried 1 inch in front of the truck's rear axle.

Choosing the right height setting for your 5th wheel hitch is a combination of a few different variables. First of all you want your towing setup to be as level as possible. With your Montana High Country 340BH level you will want to measure from the ground to the bottom of your pin box where the king pin is at. The next step is to choose which of the 3 height settings on your 5th wheel hitch, 17", 18" or 19", gives you the most level ride. Simply measure from the ground to the head...

  • Distance From Gooseneck Ball to Back of B&W Companion 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch w/ Slider
The B&W Companion 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch w/ Slider # BWRVK3400-5W referenced in your question will have a distance of 15 inches from the center of the gooseneck ball to the back edge of the Companion. The overall length of the 5th Wheel Hitch is 45 inches and has a width of 34-3/8 inches. If you are checking for clearance with a bed mounted accessory like a toolbox, you will just want to measure this 15 inch distance out from the center of your gooseneck ball to see if it will fit. This...

  • Placing Pivot Arms on B&W Companion Hitch in Furthermost Position for Short Bed Truck
I spoke with my contact at B&W and ideally you do want the king pin to sit centered above the rear axle or slightly forward but in order to increase the turning clearance on your 2014 Ford F-250, your installer was correct in placing a B&W Companion 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch like # BWRVK3400-5W in the furthermost position. According to installation instructions, the position of the pivot arm allows the kingpin to adjust from 1 inch ahead of the post to 7 inches behind the post. Please...

I can tell you how to measure to the best pivot arm adjustment on your setup. I cannot tell you which position based...

  • How Much Clearance is Required between Truck Cab and Trailer to Safely Make 90 Degree Turn
To safely execute a 90 degree turn you want at least 4 inches of clearance between the truck cab and trailer. The head of the # BWRVK3400-5W is adjustable from front to back so you may be able to adjust it back a little bit for better clearance while pulling out of your driveway. Otherwise you will need to slide the hitch back in the bed of your truck to make the turn. The reason for needing 4 inches is because if the turn your making has an elevation change the added clearance will...

  • Troubleshooting 5th Wheel Chucking with Andersen Ultimate Gooseneck Hitch
The Andersen Ultimate is a nice option for being lightweight, but it is not any help with chucking as you described. It has absolutely no built in assistance for that function. You are pulling a really big trailer, so the chucking will be worse with that than a lightweight 5th wheel because there is simply more momentum so you will feel it more. There really isn't a way to help with the chucking you are experiencing with that particular hitch as air ride will definitely help some but...

  • Proper Height of B & W Companion Fifth Wheel Hitch Installed in 2006 Dodge Ram 3500
You'll set the hitch height so that the fifth wheel is towed level. Jack the fifth wheel on level ground, and measure the height above ground on the pin box (not the king pin, but the underside of the pin box or skid plate). Then, measure how high off the ground the floor of the tuck is. The difference between those two measurements is the height you hitch will need to be. Assuming you have a short bed truck and are using the # BWRVK3400-5W sliding hitch, you'll want to install the arms...

The weight of the head unit is 75-lbs; the base weighs 207-lbs and the under-bed assembly weighs 112-lbs. For reference I have linked both the written instructions and an installation video showing this hitch being installed in a Silverado.

  • What Truck Bed Liners Can be Used with B and W Companion Fifth Wheel Hitches
I checked with B&W and with the Companion hitch # BWRVK3500-5W you would either need to remove the bedliner or trim it in the footprint of the entire base so it will have direct contact with the bed. The reason for this is because a slide-in bedliner can move around some and you do not want that happening when towing a 5th wheel trailer! I linked a video review of the Companion for you. If you wanted to remove the entire bedliner and go with a spray in one instead that might be the better...
