How to Determine the Lift Capacity You Need in a Jack

A trailer jack is designed to lift the tongue of your trailer so you can connect the trailer coupler to your hitch ball. To do this, you'll need a jack with a lift capacity high enough to handle your trailer's tongue weight.

Tongue weight is the amount of weight that your trailer applies to the back of your tow vehicle. Typically, your tongue weight should be 10-15% of your total trailer weight (trailer + cargo). In other words, a 10,000-lb trailer would have a tongue weight between 1,000 lbs and 1,500 lbs. For a trailer this size, you would need a jack with a lift capacity of at least 1,500 lbs.

It's okay to have a jack with a weight rating that is higher than your trailer's tongue weight. In fact, a jack with a higher lift capacity should operate more efficiently, allowing you to spend less time cranking and more time camping.

Trailer and Camper Jack Lift

Every jack offers a certain amount of lift or travel. Screw travel is the distance the jack extends when you crank it (or toggle it to "extend" on an electric model). Some jacks include a drop leg for extra adjustability. On these jacks, you'll see the maximum extension of the drop leg listed in the specs as well. Adding the screw travel and drop leg travel together will give you the total lift. The total lift listed above can help you determine how high this jack will be able to raise your trailer.

This jack was the perfect solution for my application. I have a new enclosed trailer that came with a manual crank and only a tiny battery to run the lights. I did not want the expense of having to buy and cable up a larger battery to just support the tongue jack. Took me 5 minutes to install this new jack using the three bolts that were already on my OEM jack. Now I just back up my truck, plug in the 7-way, and I'm able to move the tongue up and down as needed. Great!

I love my new electric trailer jack ! It has a 7 pin RV plug which makes it so convenient to power. There are lights on both sides to shine onto the hitch after dark. There is a bubble level on top to know when the camper is at least level enough to start setting up. It all works great !

This electric jack has made my life easier. I use my trailer for a mobile business and it has a 800lb tongue weight. This jack has seen a good amount of use in the last year and I've had no issues. This is a solid product and I'd recommend it.

by:

The CargoBuckle G3 ratchet tie-down straps and 45 degree mounting brackets worked great. Makes loading and unloading a breeze.

by:

Product is great. Easy to install. Performs as expected. One of the best accessories I purchased for my race trailer

by:

Replacement of the manual jack with the "A" Frame electric jack is among the best purchases I have ever made. Ease of installation and operation make hook up and removable of my trailer almost effortless.

by:

Poor quality jack quit working. Again. This is the third Jack I’ve had to buy. It’s too expensive to send it back so there really is no point. I am never buying from you again.

by:

Good jack but there are better on this site for the money. The light is useless. On the back side of the jack so does not help with connecting at night. The manual operation requires removing the mini bubble level with a small Phillips bit to use. Other jacks have a simple plug to remove by hand.

With all that said. It does perform the main purpose it was intended to do just fine. I’ve since purchased the etrailer brand same rating for another trailer and think it’s a much better jack.

by:

Failed after 1 month. Sometimes it works, sometimes not. Found that when cranked manually - even a fraction of a turn- it would work off the switch, but only once. That, with the fact that it has to have the a 3 screw cover removed to operate it manually, and therefore every time it failed, makes this unit entirely unreliable.

by:

Easy replacement of the old manual jack. Works great with the pickup outlet.
Better than expected delivery too.

by:

The problem with this one is the level cap where the emergency crank is has three small screws you need to remove. My other two have a cap that you can remove by hand real fast.If you buy this one keep a small Philips screw driver with the hand crank. Also ALL STICKERS are peeling off do to the coating used on metal. The jack is well make metal parts seem well coated.

Very simple process ~ easy website to navigate ~ great products!

works good, but i do not like the idea of having to unscrew top to use manual crank , if i am right it was suppose to be a slide to side action

by:

Use it on my enclosed car trailer to load and unload cars with low clearance, Jack works 100% satisfied, I use separate battery that I keep charged in trailer

Installed as said! Works great!

by:

Totally awesome. I have a bad right shoulder and it makes it difficult to crank the trailer jack. This power jack was like a 15 minute installation and with the 7 point plug already hooked up it was just too easy. The installation required the removal of the old manual jack and the install of the new power jack which required removing three bolts. This will make the upcoming deer season that much more enjoyable with the easy hookup.

This jack works great so far! (Day 1) Except for one minor detail, everything works as described. I have a 2014 Ford F-150 with a factory hitch & 7pin plug. My fuse box did not have the 30A fuse & relay needed to power the jack. Found the exact fuse & relay needed in my glove box. Apparently Ford doesn't install them when installing the hitch & 7pin plug. Not all trailers need this power function. Mostly the fuse & relay are used to charge the battery on a travel trailer via the 7pin plug. I'm pulling a cargo trailer with no battery to charge. Once I installed the relay in slot #9 & the 30A fuse in slot #21 in the fuse box under the hood, the jack worked as described.

I do wish the cable was a rubber jacketed cable instead of a split corrugated tubing. I might change that one day. Also wish the manual crank handle was slightly shorter. I have a V-nose trailer, and the manual crank handle hits the V-nose, not allowing for a complete 360 turn. The level on top is nice, but needs to twist off like some models I've seen. This model requires you to have a Phillips screwdriver to remove the level to get to the manual crank, and then try to keep up with the tiny screws. These are just some things I would change to make this product better.

Overall, I'm satisfied. Time will tell how long my satisfaction lasts.

I have a Cottage trailer that I move onto a lot for the winter in Arizona and put it back into storage for the summer. This jack handles it easily. Etrailer just did a one year follow up on my Jack, so I am more than impressed!

by:

Love this jack. However there was an issue connecting to my 2017 F250 SuperDuty. There is no constant 12v power to the plug to operate the Jack. I did the whole internet search and reading and dont listen to all the advice about fuses and relays. There are no fuses and or relays that are necessary. Just pull apart the 7way connector to the jack and remove the wire from 1oclock and replace to the 11oclock position and it will work fine. Before you start to look for fuses and relays just know that there is no relay connections for slot 37.

by:

This has been a great investment for my camper. I did remove the connector, and wired it into my camper's 12v system to make it easier for me, but I'm very happy with this jack. It works great and saves time and (muscle) energy!

by:

Shipping was fast and jack works when I plugged it into my pickup. Haven’t mounted it yet but looks like it should fit

It worked when I installed it in late fall when I hooked up to it the spring it wouldn’t work I installed a new switch and still didn’t work.

by:

This jack is awesome! I have service connected disabilities that affect my arms and this is a lifesaver. It's as easy to install as a regular crank jack, very heavy, and I love the 7-pin plug for power. I installed it on our 3 horse v-nose trailer. I can lift the trailer and pick up the rear end of my 1/2 ton truck with ease.

by:

Great jack. Hooked up to my enclosed snowmobile trailer, with 2 sleds inside. Lifted the tongue with no problem. I thought it would be slow but it raised right up. Just think i will never have to crank up the trailer again
