Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

This was replacement for one damaged wheel that I had previously purchased at etrailer. The wheels and tires are of very good quality

Mounted Tires are like the day I got them. I and Friends have put many hundreds of miles on them and they still look new. I have never had to air them up as they have lost only about 3psi since purchase and first inflation check.
Rodney e - 04/24/2022

I finally replaced the long overdue to get scrapped OEM tires on my 7'x14' V-Nose, enclosed trailer. etrailer made the process super easy. I was able to obtain the size from the old tires and also from the manufacturer's label on the trailer itself. Then the hard part, or so I thought. Measuring the lug pattern. etrailer made that super easy with its idiot-proof measuring diagram and instructions. Also easy, the etrailer website. I found a pair of the tires I was looking for, already mounted to wheels and at a fair price. Each of the wheels/tires were packaged safe, secure and arrived super fast!

If you're in need of anything trailer related, you'll be doing yourself a disservice shopping elsewhere!

Thanks etrailer, I will be back for sure!!!

After a year of having these tires and rims on my trailer, I am still as happy with my purchase and overall transaction with

Excellent addition to my trailer, matches stock wheel perfectly. Well made and great service. I highly recommend this product.

Perfect, tire wear is good and still in great shap
Fred - 04/18/2022

Great tires and wheels so far. Was basically cheaper to go with these than get a new tire remounted at a tire shop, plus you end up with a nice rust free new wheel.

I am very happy with etrailer so far. Found them on the internet while looking for a stare for a new trailer. After ordering emails were sent to keep me up to date on my order. My spare for my trailer came ahead of schedule even though it was the holidays. Very happy. Keep up the good work.

After a year I have to say I’m still happy with my spare tire. Although in all fairness I have to admit that it is a spare and I have not had to use it. I did mount it before a big trip to make sure it’s the right one. Fit perfectly.
Dave - 12/31/2021

Needed a spare for our utility trailer before leaving next month on a 1500 mile trip. Wanted to closely match the four OEM tire/wheel. Thru etrailer we were able to match tire size and load range, as well as a very close match to the silver mod wheels. Tire/wheel arrived a day before expected. This tire/wheel was not available for immediate shipment when we placed the order, but expected in three weeks. etrailer reached out to us the day after we placed the order letting us know the same combination was available for immediate shipment (on a black wheel) if we were in a time crunch. Great service.

Perfect Fit and matches existing wheel/ Rim

Philip - 05/15/2022

This is the 5th wheel and tire combo I’ve ordered from retailer and I’ve zero complaints. The Kenda Karrier radial tires leave nothing to be desired; track straight, smooth, and supple. The Dexstar wheels are coated completely and look great.

Nice quality tires, rims appear nice, and most importantly the trailer pulls smooth, stable, and straight.

It has been a year, and a few thousand miles pulling the camper with no tire issues. Wheels still look great too.
Justin V - 03/19/2020

I got a trailer for free but it needed an axle, fenders and wheels/tires. My purchase was Exactly what I expected and great price. oh and stupid fast shipping.

Bought as a spare tire, thankfully haven’t had to use yet. Shipped perfectly, arrived as described. Customer service is excellent is you have any issues.

The tire/wheel fit perfectly and the shipping was fast. Thank you

after a year, and not having used it much, I think these tires may not be a good value. They seem out of balance. When I pull the trailer It vibrates the whole truck. The tires bounce around. I haven't taken it to a shop to check it but that kind of defeats the purpose of ordering online.

Thank you for your feedback. I will have our customer service team reach out to you. Trailer tires are not typically perfectly balanced as their main responsibility is supporting a load behind a tow vehicle, not providing a smooth ride for passengers.

so far so good but I haven't used my trailer yet' well see when I start hauling wood

Excellent tire wish the prices were better excellent e trailer help.

Wheel and tire have held up well on my 6.5 x 12 single axle trailer. Tire has about 10K miles on it so far.

I was really really fast shipped, and the tire and wheel are good product, also the staff was helpful.

Tires that I ordered were delivered very fast, packaged very well, and excellent communication from the time of ordering to after the time of delivery. As an owner of a construction company with several dual axle trailers, I need a reliable and fast company to order from, and
I have found it!!! Thant you etrailer. We will be doing business with you again soon.

Look great. Ride great.

No flats in a year good tires

When I needed tires I received great tires and alumminum rims

Customer service and delivery time were excellent

Boy oh boy the service is fast! I had a trailer wheel delivered will call and UPS couldn't find it. I contacted etrailer and Ashley E replied to me within an hour. 5 stars etrailer!. Went back to UPS Monday and it only took 4 people 20 min to find my package. One note.I reused the center cap and it didn't fit. The new tire's center hole about 1/16 in smaller than my old tire. I had to use my rubber mallet adjustment tool. My old tires are only two years and 1500 miles old but I live in a sea side community and everything rust out. I was easier to buy whole new rims and tire from etrailer

Thank you !!!

Exactly what I was looking for at good price

  • How to Increase the Weight Carrying Capacity of a 2016 Coachmen Viking 17BHS
The weight capacity of a trailer will always be limited by its weakest component. You can in turn increase the weight capacity of the trailer by upgrading these components. Based on what you provided, the tires rated at 3,420 lbs for the pair are the weakest component and will be what you want to look at first when upgrading. The axle rated at 3,500 lbs is the next weakest component. In order to upgrade the weight capacity of the tires on your trailer you will need to switch to a larger...

  • Is Tire Balancing Required For A Trailer Wheel And Tire Combination?
The Kenda Karrier ST205/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire w/ 15" Silver Mod Wheel # AM32418DX do not require balancing. Trailer tires are generally never balanced as it is not necessary. I have included an article linked below on common tire myths for trailer tires and balancing is the first one. Tires are balanced on a car to provide a smooth ride, the same reason cars have shocks. Trailers do not require these kind of comfort items as they are designed to ride behind the vehicle and carry heavy...

  • Should Tires Always be Set to PSI Rating on Tire Sidewall and Where Should TPMS Alerts be Set
Yes, you want your tires, like the Kenda # AM32418DX, to be at that 65 psi they are cold (or have been sitting for quite a while like overnight). When you start heading out the tires will naturally heat up and expand due to the friction with the road so it's usually a good thing to set the alert for the tires about 20 psi higher than the cold psi rating. It's also a great idea to set your TPMS to warn you when the psi rating falls below that 65 rating. I recommend shooting for 5 - 10 psi...

  • Can 14" Wheel And Tire Be Used As Spare For 15" Wheel And Tire On Trailer?
A 14" wheel and tire could be used as a very short term fix to get the trailer off the side of the road, but it is not good to have tires that are a different height on the trailer. Doing so will cause excess weight on the side with the shorter tire and would cause handling and suspension wear issues. I recommend carrying a spare that is the exact size as the tires on your trailer. For example if your 15" wheels and tires are a 205/75R15 I recommend using the Kenda Karrier ST205/75R15...

  • What Are The Biggest Tires That Can Fit On A 5/10 Trailer?
When choosing the biggest tire that can go on your 5 x 10 trailer, we will want to keep in mind tire clearance. The minimum distance between the inside of a tire and the frame rail depends a lot on the setup of the trailer but as long as the tire and the frame don't touch you would be fine. You should have at least 2 inches from the sidewall to the trailer and at least 3 or 4 inches from the tread to the underside of the fender. If you have that clearance than a 15" tire like # AM32418DX...

  • Can Trailer Tire and Wheel Size ST205/75-14 be Replaced by ST205/75-15
Yes if you wanted to go with a larger wheel and tire size of ST205/75-15 instead of the ST205/75-14 that you have on your trailer now you certainly could like with the # part # AM32418DX or for something with an aluminum wheel the # 274-000036. You'd only lose about 1/2 an inch of wheel well space so there shouldn't be an issue at all.

  • Will Increasing Trailer Tire Size Improve Tire Reliability for Carry On 5 x 10 Utility Trailer
I have a solution for you to potentially increase your utility trailer tires' durability but you may not need to change your tire size. A larger diameter/wider trailer tire can be substituted for the stock size when there is enough clearance within the wheel well/fender and around suspension and brake components. Your size ST205/75D15 tires have an overall diameter of right around 27-inches while a 225/75-15 will be about 1-1/2-inches larger at about 28-1/2-inches. You need to maintain...

Trailer tires typically have a lifespan of 5 to 6 years. This means that no matter how good the tread depth may be, no matter how few dry rot cracks you might see in the sidewall, you'll want to consider replacing the tires when they reach this age.
