Weight Distributing Hitch

Create a stable ride for your tow vehicle and trailer with a weight-distribution hitch. Adding spring bars to your towing system applies leverage, which transfers the load that is pushing down on the rear of your vehicle to all the axles on both your tow vehicle and your trailer, resulting in an even distribution of weight throughout. The result is a smooth, level ride, as well as the ability to tow the maximum capacity of your hitch.

Selecting a Weight-Distribution System

The tongue weight rating is the most important factor in determining which size weight-distribution system you should use. If the bars of the system you choose are rated too high for your setup, they will create a rigid ride, which can result in a bouncing trailer. If, on the other hand, the bars are not rated high enough, the system will be unable to properly distribute the weight, rendering it virtually useless.

To determine the proper weight rating for a weight-distribution system, you must first determine your trailer's tongue weight. Then add to that the weight of the cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. These two measurements make up the tongue weight rating for a weight-distribution system.

Serrated Washer System

Unique Features of Reese Trunnion-Bar Weight Distribution

The easy-to-use, serrated washers on the Reese system make adjusting the tilt of the weight-distribution head a snap. This is a huge improvement over the standard pin-and-washer method, which involves piling washers - one on top of another - onto a difficult-to-access pin. The serrated-washer system lets you easily loosen, adjust and tighten a single washer and nut on either side of the head for simple, secure positioning.

The trunnion spring bars of this system slide into the weight-distribution head for quick, easy installation. With a tapered design and hot rolled steel construction, these bars offer superior flex, ensuring a smooth, controlled ride for both your tow vehicle and your trailer. In addition, these specially designed bars have rounded, hooked ends, making them the only kind of spring bars that can function with Reese's active-style, dual-cam sway control (sold separately).

I use this 1500 lbs WDH with my 14,000 lb equipment trailer and 10,000 lb dump trailer. Previously, I used a 1200 lb WDH.

I just hauled a load of pavers (a gross combined weight of just over 20,000 lbs) with 11,600 lbs on the trailer axles. I had 1400 lbs of tongue weight (used a scale to measure). The one-way trip was traveled on a two-lane highway crossing over five 5,000 ft mountain passes. Excellent hitch performance uphill and downhill through lots of tight curves.

The tension bars are easy to install / remove and they have great ground clearance. If it is necessary to adjust the hitch angle, the fine graduations for different hitch angles make it easy to get the exact angle needed.

Great product!

I really like the Reese Trunnion style weight distribution. It gives more clearance to the road than round-bar kits.
I appreciate the fact that the bars are available in different spring rates for different tongue loads. I dial my front axle load restoration (FALR) exactly to 100% and having a variety of spring rates makes this possible.

Wonderful. Make sure to keep your trunnions greased.

by:

Not a whole lot to say about this product. It's works very well for us without any issue. Only complaint I have is not really product-related: The pipe used for lifting the bars into position is a tad longer than I wish it was. Reason being is that occasionally I need to have that bar completely vertical to get the chain on the trailer prior to lifting. The entire unit sits so low sometimes I have to cheat the system by choosing a link with less lifting power... then do the other side... then come back and to it all over again. Just a hassle and yes, i know I can just cut the bar with a cutoff wheel, but I just have not got to it yet.

Items arrived very quickly. Setup instructions were very clear. Would highly recommend Reese WD Hitch for all your heavy towing needs.

Excellent web sight, I am a purchasing manager for a manufacturing firm and this sight is one of the best, very easy,
Product was delivered in good condition, one day late due to weather, but I was notified of the delivery change in advance!
Thanks, will be ordering more.

It was just like it was described. Came in perfect condition, fast delivery, no problems. I'll order again from etrailer.com.... They have what you need and want, beats shopping around all over town and the internet...

Works great. Using on a 14000 lb. tag along trailer behind a dually pickup. Takes up the slop in the hitch so the ride is better.

by:

Customer service was outstanding during the ordering process, hitch arrived as website indicated. Best price anywhere I could find. Thanks etrailer!

by:

Huge difference over the old undersized hitch

Had these installed by a dealer and drove a few hours to a campsite this spring. Only the second time driving a camper and first time on a major highway. White knuckle ride for the first half hour then realized the camper wasn't swaying or rocking and started to relax. Coming home two days later I started out relaxed and enjoyed the drive....even passed a truck!

by:

Thoroughly torture tested between 7500 lb camper and 10500 lb trailerable a houseboat. Bought the anti-sway cams separately off [online] due to availability. Combined as a system, this stopped anti-sway and saved my butt during a hard downpour rain and side winds. The cams were the difference in pulling off to get to safety vs laying on the side of road upside down like some 18 wheeliers.

Yes, its expensive. No, you dont buy another one unless you sell it with the camper / trailer.

by:

After a slight modification to my trailer (brackets fit a 2.5 inch frame; mine was 3 inches), this hitch fit perfectly and works great. Now I can tow a 3 ton tractor without worrying about putting too much strain on my rear axle.

Also impressed with etrailer.com's service - the hitch arrived much sooner than expected. Will definitely be doing business on this site again.

This was my first encounter with etrailer and I have to say it was hands down the best service I have ever received! Really.. And no I don't work for etrailer!!!!!! We use to live in a country where good service was just a way of life. Today, lets face it, service is terrible! But not etrailer.. I placed an order for this product online and selected the normal shipping method by ground. I immediately got the normal email "thank you for your order". But then I got another email from an actual person, George.. George let me know the product was in their distribution facility and will ship in 24-48 hours.. To my surprise, the order shipped the same day and I received another email from a Frank stating they took the liberty of upgrading my shipping to 3 to 5 days express shipping instead of the normal 5 to 7 days at no charge to me! So my response to this was "wow great service thank you!".. Again to my surprise I received an email from a Nikki who thanked me for my positive feedback. On a side note can you believe, they actually put their direct phone with extension along their email address on the bottom of their emails so you can actually get in touch with them? I didn't think this type of stellar service existed anymore.. Kudos to etrailer.. Ok, I think I almost forgot to write about the actual product.. The product was made very well, hooked up with no issues, and when I had questions on adjustments, you guessed it, i called and emailed folks at etrailer and they actually helped me!!!! They could have sent me a box of cracker jacks and I would have given then an excellent review! :) Keep up the great work etrailer... I won't shop anywhere else for my trailer needs..

Installed it today on my cargo trailer and 2022 Ford Explorer and took it for test drive to the local truck scale. Products and instructions were great. Pam was wonderful helping me pick out exactly what I needed (and not try to sell me things I didn’t need).

  • What Reese Weight Distribution Systems Use the Heavy Duty Snap Up Brackets
The higher capacity Reese WD systems we carry do have the heavy duty brackets part # 58392. For example the Reese WD System part # RP66131 has the heavy duty brackets. To answer your other question, yes the # 58392 does include the set screw and safety pin. • Weight Distribution Recommendation for a 2004 Ford F-150 and 2011 Eclipse 3 Horse Trailer
When selecting a weight distribution system, you will want one that has a tongue weight capacity range that encompasses the trailer tongue weight, with the trailer loaded and ready to tow, and the weigh of any gear loaded in the tow vehicle BEHIND the rear axle. Trailer tongue weight is typically 10 to 15 percent of the gross trailer weight. At capacity, 9,990 pounds, the tongue weight at 15 percent would be just under 1,500 pounds so I recommend an 800 to 1,500 pound system like the Strait-Line...
