Product Expert Lindsey S's Opinion

Why would I buy this?

  • Great at preventing sway by holding trailer firmly in place at the system head and along the frame
  • Industry leading Equal-i-zer brand does weight distribution hitches and nothing else, so they know their stuff
  • If you need a bigger drop or rise, you won't be wasting money by getting a standard shank that you won't end up using. But...

Why wouldn't I buy this?

  • Steel-on-steel brackets can create a lot of noise, especially during turns
  • Requires a special thin-walled socket for installation, which is not included
  • You do have to buy the shank separately, so there is that extra step.
Steel-on-steel friction works to prevent and correct trailer sway in this unique weight distribution system. Sway control brackets ensure that your trailer stays in line with your tow vehicle. Shank sold separately. 2-5/16" Hitch ball included. Lowest Prices for the best weight distribution hitch from Equal-i-zer. Weight Distribution Diagram

Create a more stable ride for your tow vehicle and trailer with a weight distribution hitch. Adding spring bars to your towing system applies leverage, which transfers the load that is pushing down on the rear of your vehicle to all the axles on both your tow vehicle and your trailer, resulting in an even distribution of weight throughout. The result is a smooth, level ride, as well as the ability to tow the maximum capacity of your hitch.

Selecting a Weight Distribution System

The tongue weight rating is the most important factor in determining which size weight distribution system you should use. If the bars of the system you choose are rated too high for your setup, they will create a rigid ride, which can result in a bouncing trailer. If, on the other hand, the bars are not rated high enough, the system will be unable to properly distribute the weight, rendering it virtually useless.

To determine the proper weight rating for a weight distribution system, you must first determine your trailer's tongue weight. Then add to that the weight of the cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. These two measurements make up the tongue weight rating for a weight distribution system.

Features of the Equal-i-zer

Head Tilt Adjustment

Controlling head tilt with traditional washer method

The Equal-i-zer weight distribution system uses the traditional washer-style adjustment method to achieve the perfect tilt. Controlling the head tilt helps you to fine-tune the leverage on your entire system, making it easier to install and hook up the spring bars. To adjust the tilt, simply slide washers onto the spacer rivet and insert the rivet into the head assembly. To increase the angle, add a washer. To reduce the angle, remove a washer. Most setups take four to six washers to achieve the proper height. Once you get the desired tilt, insert the shank bolts to secure the head to the shank (sold separately) and then tighten it in place.

Construction of Spring Arms

The Equal-i-zer spring bars are not made of traditional spring steel. Rather, they are constructed of a chromium-molybdenum alloy steel. Chromoly steel has a high tensile strength for extreme durability. It also features excellent dexterity, which allows it to give as required and then return softly back to its original form. This pliability is important in minimizing trailer bounce while still ensuring that the weight of your rig is adequately distributed.

Fixed Sway Control Brackets

Installation of Sway-Control Brackets

The unique sway control brackets of the Equal-i-zer are easy to install and simple to use. They clamp onto your trailer frame and conveniently adjust to a position anywhere between 27 inches and 32 inches back from the coupler. These brackets provide the attachment points for the weight distribution spring bars. To position the spring bars during hookup, simply use the included snap-up lever to lift each bar into place on the L-shaped brackets. Then secure the bars in place with the included L-pins and clips.

Equal-i-zer Hitch 4-Point Sway Control

The Equal-i-zer weight distribution system works to stop trailer sway before it begins. This is achieved through the rotational friction that is present in the weight distribution hitch itself. Within the system head, the downward pressure that is placed on the hitch ball by the trailer is combatted by the upward pressure exerted by the spring bars that are mounted in the sockets. This upward force is placed on the spring bars on either side of the system, creating the rotational friction that, essentially, forces your trailer in line. This type of friction is responsible for two points - one on either side of the trailer - of the 4-Point Sway Control. To ensure that enough tension is present, make certain that the socket bolts in the head assembly are torqued to at least 45 foot-pounds.

Points within the Equal-i-zer system where upward and downward forces interact to create rotational friction

The other two points of sway control are created by the steel-on-steel friction that occurs when the spring bars slide within the L-brackets that are mounted on the trailer tongue. Most traditional weight distribution systems have spring bars that are suspended by chains. Although this ensures that the system is not so rigid as to create bounce in the trailer, it also allows a good deal of side-to-side play in the system. Letting the spring bars hang freely minimizes the rotational friction described earlier. It also eliminates your system's ability to create the type of direct friction that has been shown to be so effective in limiting trailer sway.

This direct friction that is applied to the spring bars in the Equal-i-zer system helps to stop sway once it has begun. The concept is similar to the way in which an add-on friction sway control device functions. When each spring bar moves forward or backward, or side to side, it rubs along the bracket, creating friction. The resistance created by this action limits the movement of the spring bar, thus preventing further side-to-side movement of the trailer.

Most add-on units feature some sort of friction material similar to that used in automotive brakes. But the Equal-i-zer uses direct steel-on-steel contact to create resistance. This is the same sort of friction that is used with locomotives that pull loaded railcars weighing tons. No additional materials are needed. The steel will outlast any of those other materials, providing an extremely durable, functional sway control system.

Video Transcript for Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution System with 4 Point Sway Control Review

Today we're going to be taking a look a the Equalizer Weight Distribution with a 4-point sway control. It has a 12,000-lb gross trailer weight and a 1,200-lb tongue weight, part number EQ37121ET. Please note, you will have to provide your own weight distribution chain. You've decided you need a weight distribution system, the Equalizer weight distribution system uses steel on steel friction to help prevent and correct trailer sway. The sway control brackets ensure that your trailer stays in line with your two vehicle. Our spring bars flex appropriately over uneven terrain for a more controlled and even ride without bounce. The system includes the head assembly.

It uses a traditional washer system to provide tilt in the head, the more tilt in the head, the more life in the tongue weight. Because it uses the 4-point sway control, there are no chains. The spring bars are easily installed with the included lift handle. The whole thing is made out of a dipped steel construction, so it's going to be durable and resist rust and corrosion. As with all weight distribution systems, it helps your tow vehicle get back to a stock height with the added weight of a trailer. Let's take a look at that now. I've gone ahead and removed the weight distribution and disconnected from the trailer, let's go ahead and get a stock measurement of our tow vehicle.

Here at the rear, we've got about 39-1/2" to the underside of the wheel well. At the front, I've got about 38-1/2". You want to be sure and record these measurements because these are the measurements we want to try and get back to when we engage our weight distribution system. Now I've gone ahead and hooked my trailer back up to my tow vehicle without weight distribution, now let's take a look and see what the tow vehicle looks like. Here in the back, I'm squatting about 1", and here in the front, my vehicle's tilted upward about 3/4".

Weight distribution should correct that, let's hook it up. Now I've got my trailer hooked back up and my weight distribution engaged, let's go ahead and take another measurement on our tow vehicle. Here in the back, we're back to stock height and same with the front. Excellent. Not using a weight distribution system can cause issues with your traction, tire wear, and handling. Getting your vehicle back to stock with a weight distribution system can help prevent those problems.

Now let's show you how it's installed. First thing to note about using a weight distribution system is you need to make sure your trailer or camper is fully loaded and ready to go. This ensures proper weight is being applied to your tow vehicle. The shank can be installed in either the rise or drop position, the head is adjustable along the shank, you just need to make sure that the top of the ball is level with the top of the coupler when your trailer is level. The kit includes 8 washers to adjust the tilt of your head, you don't have to use all 8, you just need to make sure to use enough to get your vehicle back close to stock. Our spring bars fit inside the weight distribution head and are lifted on the L-bracket with the included tool. We can then place in our snap L-pin to help keep the spring bar in place. This is where that steel on steel friction takes place, helping us with our sway control. Finally our link plates are installed on our trailer's A-frame, with the L-brackets on the outside. You just want to make sure and avoid your battery box or your propane tanks, those may have to be relocated. It needs to be positioned between 27 and 32" from the center of your coupler. If you've used all 8 washers for your head tilt and your vehicle still isn't back to stock, you can adjust your L-brackets. That's going to complete our look at the Equalizer Weight Distribution with a 4-point sway control, with a 12,000-lb gross trailer weight and a 1,200-lb tongue weight, part number EQ37121ET.

After a pretty easy set up of my new Equal-I-zer hitch I took a 160 mile trip with my travel trailer and I was amazed at how well the anti sway worked. Being passed by large vehicles at high speeds caused virtually no sway in my rig. I am impressed by how well this hitch worked and would recommend it to any one who pulls a travel trailer. 614195

We just moved from a light weight Lance to a much heavier Arctic Fox. I was inclined to use the same Fastway hitch but most of the AF owners recommended the Equalizer. I had to order the shank separately to get the right size (thanks Ford) but it all came in two (very) heavy boxes. Assembly was fairly straight forward and adjustments are easy. Quality wise, the EQ hitch appears better built than the Fastway and I really like the heavier duty construction of the parts that mount on the tongue of the trailer. The tension bars are easier to manage being straight but this also means that you have extra little parts to lose so we'll be packing a spare kit. The hitch portion itself is a heavy duty affair, much more so than I had imagined. Quality of materials and fit and finish are first rate and with the extra holes, I can use a cable lock to secure the hitch when it's off the truck. As always, we got the best price on etrailer and shipping was very quick. This is definitely a "buy once cry once" decision and etrailer's support made this an easy purchase. 469404

This is the second Equalizer hitch I have had. I needed to replace my first one as I bought a larger camping trailer and the older equalizer didn't have the proper tongue weight rating. We drive a 2011 Tundra TRD 4x4 with a 5.7 liter. We pull a 2017 mallard M292 by hartland that is 34'-9" with a height of 10''- 4" weight is 6905 lbs. Dry with a tongue weight of 725 lbs. Living in the mountains of Western North Carolina I have many curves and tractor trailers to deal with on I-40. Everywhere we go is down the mountain and to return home is always up hill. At no time have I ever had my trailer do any swaying. Leveling issues are never a problem with my Equalizer hitch. I believe it is the best hitch on the market, hands down. Having the wife happy and relaxed and not thinking about the trailer while on long hauls keeps me calm and focused. It took about 2 hours to install and adjust. etrailer has done a great job once again and Molly was the best 452533

I purchased a trailer used over ten years ago. It was a 26 foot travel trailer approximately 7500 lbs. It was old and heavy. The previous owner had purchased this same equilizer hitch and gave it to me with trailer. It was on there since day one every time I towed so I never realized how well it benefited me. I sold that trailer some years back. Last year I bought a new travel trailer. 26 foot but only 6000lbs. I bought a harbor freight weight distribution hitch and installed it at rv dealer. I worked with the guys to ensure it was installed correctly. Well I can tell you the combo was the most dangerous rig I ever operated. I made adjustments over and over again but never felt safe. At that piont I decided it must be the cheap harbor freight hitch and started looking for a new hitch. I came across the equilizer and remembered how well and stabil that rig felt. So I sized the correct one and purchased it. I installed it as per manufacturer instructions. Right away it was a million times better. It took some adjustments but got it perfect. In my opinion it one of the best and good price too. Easy to use and adjust . Nothing fancy but a good old design that works quiet and safe. I have traveled at over 85 mph by accident because it's all so smooth. 388383

I bought a heavier truck in past year. Im using same hitch and trailer. I had to make a height adjustment but other than that the hitch is still delivering the same great stable service.

The 12k Equalizer Weight Distribution Hitch is an AWESOME product and did all it said it would do. Bombed hills, kept my ride steady, and most important kept my family safe on the SoCal/NorCal roads more than 28 hrs of driving north to the redwoods @ Jedidiah Smith then back south again. Next trip coming up quick in a week getting ready for another adventure. With the new EQ WDH set up is a snap! Thank you etrailer Team for all the help and great pricing! The hitch took about 2.5 hours to install, that’s with me removing the previous WDH, taking my time to go through the installation, and double-checking each step. Using a break bar helped out tremendously. Can’t wait for my next camping trip. I’ll update my review to mention the hitches performance. 681295

We had an E2 12,000 pound hitch to tow our travel trailer, GVWR of 10,000 pounds. We could not adjust the sway out of it and did not feel comfortable towing long distances. We contacted Lindy at etrailer and she had the new Equalizer hitch out to us in two days. I will set it up this weekend and no doubt be much more relaxed when traveling. Great customer service and cost was better than other sources we checked. Products arrived in perfect condition. 666405

The 12,000 pound Equal-i-zer is my third weight distribution hitch and by far the most effective. It is heavy and cumbersome but once on the road you forget that the trailer is behind you. I have had no problem with cross winds or passing 18 wheelers. I would buy it again. The trailer is winterized and in deep snow so no photos. Bill A. 604136

Great WDH. There is a little trial and error getting it set up but the instructions are easy to follow. Don't forget to grease the moving parts on the head and buying plastic jackets for the brackets greatly reduces noise. Very stable towing. 578701

Comments
The jackets do indeed quiet the hitch to a degree, but be aware that using them can diminish the effectiveness of the sway control. The metal-on-metal contact is what provides the sway control, and the jackets diminish that.

This is one strong hitch. Assembly and adjustment instructions are well written and easy to follow but you'd better have the right tools and a level, smooth parking lot to do the work. The instructions do not mention how stiff the arm sockets will be when the hitch is being assembled and do not cover lubrication until later in maintenance. Be sure to get the correct height/drop shank. I used the Equal-i-zer "Find the right shank" wizard on their website and came up short (literally) so had to order a second, longer one. etrailer was great about taking the short shank back as long as it hadn't been used (installed and adjusted on vehicle was OK, just not having actually towed anything). etrailer also wasted NO time in getting my parts to me--three days via Big Brown to a small town in Idaho. USPS can't get a letter delivered that far away any quicker (not bashing USPS by any means). 564812

The Equal-i-zer works great! I've only used it on 3 trips, but have put about 1,500 miles on it. I have no sway whatsoever. It's also VERY easy to hook up once you get it all assembled. It is a little bit noisy, but I don't mind that much. They make little pad that helps quiet the squeaking so I may try that and see how that works. 426959

I ordered this Equalizer 4 point anti sway system without shank and added the 2 1/2 inch shank to fit properly on my new tow vehicle. All parts arrived in Canada within 5 days. I am very particular about setup. From the start of disassembling my old system to driving away with the new setup was over 3 hours. But it tows beautifully. Something I never said about my old spring bars with chains. This is the first time ordering from etrailer. They do a good job. 395701

  • Difference Between Equal-I-Zer Weight Distribution Systems EQ37121ET and EQ37100ET
There's a couple key differences between the Equal-I-Zer Weight Distribution systems # EQ37121ET and # EQ37100ET that you referenced. The biggest being that the tongue weight range is different. The part # EQ37100ET has a range of 600-1,000 lbs and includes a shank whereas the part # EQ37121ET has a range of 800 lbs - 1,200 lbs and does not include a shank. The best way to pick out a weight distribution system is to base it off of the loaded tongue weight of the setup when it is loaded...

I attached a link to a page that has common weight distribution questions as well for you to check out.

  • Recommended Weight Distribution System for 2017 Wolf Pack Trailer with 9,985 Pound GVWR
When picking out a properly rated weight distribution system, the most important factor to consider is the total tongue weight of your setup. This number includes both the loaded and ready to tow tongue weight of your trailer, along with any added cargo weight coming from behind the rear axle of your truck. Ideally, this number will fall somewhere near the middle of the operating range for the system you choose. As you mentioned in your question, more is definitely not always better,...

  • Weight Distribution for a 2017 Ford F-150 and 4,400 Pound Trailer
First you will need to make sure that the trailer hitch on your 2017 Ford F-150 is rated for use with weight distribution. There should be a separate capacity listed when using weight distribution. I am certain that it is but it never hurts to make sure. For a trailer with a gross weight of 4,400 pounds that would put the tongue weight at 440 to 660 pounds. You also have to add in the weight of anything loaded behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle. Based on these numbers Equal-i-zer...

  • Will Equal-I-Zer Weight Distribution Frame Brackets Fit on 5 inch Tall Trailer Frame
The frame brackets that are included with the Equal-I-Zer weight distribution system part # EQ37121ET will work well on your trailer frame that is 5 inches tall as they are compatible with up to 6 inch tall trailer frames.

  • Will a Fastway E2 Shank Work On An Equal-i-zer 12K Weight Distribution System
Yes, you can use the shank from your old Fastway E2 Weight Distribution System on the Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution System part # EQ37121ET. The weight distribution system shanks all use standard measurements so you can swap between brands without issue.

  • Could the Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution EQ37121ET Fit an EAZ Lift Shank
The Equalizer # EQ37121ET that you referenced has 3/4 inch holes that are spaced 1-1/4 inches apart. If the shank of your Eaz system is compatible with that this the WD system would work well for you. Nearly all WD system use the same hole dimensions. We have found that almost all brands can use each others shanks.

  • Is the Hitch Ball Pre-Installed in the Weight Distribution Head of the Equal-I-zer System?
The Equal-i-zer weight distribution systems like # EQ37121ET come with the hitch ball needed, but do not come pre-installed. You will need to use a thin walled socket like # ALL643216 or # EQ70-00-4800 to torque it to manufacturer specs.

  • Recommended Weight Distribution System For 2013 Toyota Tundra With 11-Inch Lift Kit
To find the correct shank you need for your Tundra with the 11-inch lift you will need to measure. First, you will want to park your truck and trailer on flat ground. Measure from the ground to the top of the trailer hitch receiver opening. Next, measure from the ground to the bottom of the trailer coupler. If the trailer hitch receiver opening is taller than the bottom of the trailer coupler, then the difference between the two measurements is the amount of drop you will need in a ball...

  • Does Equalizer Weight Distribution System EQ37121ET Allow For Backing Up The Trailer
Yes, the Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution System part # EQ37121ET does allow for backing up in a straight line. It is also electric and surge brake compatible. If the tongue weight of your trailer while fully loaded is between 800 and 1,200 lbs then this system will work well for you. It does not include the adjustable shank so you need part # EQ90-02-4400.

  • Weight Distribution Hitch Compatibility with Airbag Suspension
You can use both a weight distribution system like the Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution w/ 4-Point Sway Control - No Shank - 12,000 lbs GTW, 1,200 lbs TW # EQ37121ET and an air spring suspension enhancement but most manufacturers will recommend automatic leveling systems be disabled when using the weight distribution system. That being said, you will need a weight distribution system that can handle your total tongue weight. Your total tongue weight is the loaded tongue weight of your...

  • Are Weight Distribution Systems Only Designed To Be Used With Trucks
The Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution w/ 4-Point Sway Control part # EQ37121ET fits a 2" hitch so technically any vehicle that has 2" hitch can use the weight distribution system as long as the hitch is rated for the use of weight distribution. All of the Class III hitches that we carry for the Caravan can be used with weight distribution. Weight distribution systems are designed to distribute the weight of the trailer to help keep the trailer in line which helps with sway and bounce. to...

  • Does Weight of Weight Distribution System Get Factored in as Added Tongue Weight
This is a really good question, but the weight of the weight distribution system does not get added to the tongue weight figure. Essentially the WD system becomes a part of the hitch so it's weight does not get added in according to the weight distribution system manufacturers. So you'd be looking at a loaded tongue weight figure of 370 lbs which would work great with your Equal-i-zer system part # EQ37061ET that you have. I attached a review video for this system for you to check...

  • How To Tow with the Tailgate Down on a 2018 Ram 2500
I do have options for you but the traditional hitch extenders like the Hitch Box Extension and Reducer part # RP45292 that you are looking at will reduce your towing capacity too much to be used with your trailer most likely. Therefore, the best option I have is a weight distribution system with an extended shank, the Equal-i-zer Weight Dist Shank part # EQ90-02-4600 and the Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution System part # EQ37121ET. I understand you may not need weight distribution but...

  • Weight Distribution Hitch for 24-Foot Enclosed Trailer with Limited Frame Clearance
You could use a friction sway control device like # 83660 to help control the sway effects caused by passing trucks, but with a 24-foot enclosed trailer that has a lot of surface area for wind to push on, you will get much better results with a weight distribution system that has built-in sway prevention. These perform much better, and they also allow you back up the trailer without having to disconnect the sway arm. All friction arm units must be disengaged before you try to back up the...

  • Can Reese Strait-Line Weight Distribution Fit with C Channel Trailer Frame
While the Strait-Line Weight Distribution w/ Sway Control - No Shank # RP66074 is a great option, since your trailer has a C channel we will need to find you a different system as the Strait-Line is designed to clamp down on both sides of the trailer frame. For your application I recommend going with the Equal-i-zer System # EQ37121ET instead. This has the same weight capacity as the Strait-Line system but it uses brackets that fit around your C channel and then you can place some wood...

  • Upgrading to 2-1/2 Inch Shank or Using a Reducer Sleeve with Equal-I-zer Weight Distribution System
Between using a reducer sleeve and upgrading your weight distribution shank, I recommend going with a weight distribution shank designed to fit the 2-1/2 inch hitch receiver on your 2015 Ram 2500HD. Using a 2/1/2 inch shank, like # EQ90-02-4800, for your Equal-I-zer weight distribution system, like # EQ37121ET, will not require adding any additional components to the system at the receiver. There will be less room for play in the hitch receiver when using a 2-1/2 inch shank than if...

  • Weight Distribution System Recommend for 1,000 lbs Tongue Weight with 6 in of Drop for 2.5 Hitch
The correct way to determine the amount of drop you will need is to measure from the top of the hitch opening to the ground like you mentioned but then on the trailer you will need to measure from the bottom lip of the coupler to the ground when the trailer is level. The difference between the two measurements is the amount of drop you would need. Based on the dimensions you listed you are most likely going to need a 5 inch drop. If you have a hitch with a 2-1/2 inch opening then a system...

  • Which Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution for 8000 lb GVWR Travel Trailer
Since tongue weight is approximately 10 to 15% of the trailer's fully loaded and ready to tow weight, let's start out with the premise that your Imagine 2500 RL has a tongue weight between 800 and 1100 lbs. In that case, I can highly recommend the Equal-i-zer # EQ37121ET which is specifically designed for trailers with a tongue weight between 800 and 1200 lbs (make sure you include cargo stowed in the truck bed behind the rear axle as tongue weight). The system includes the 2-5/16 inch...

I recommend using an Equal-i-zer weight distribution system. For a weight distribution shank, I recommend the Equal-i-zer Weight Dist Shank # EQ90-02-4500. This shank measures 18 inches long overall, and it measures 14 inches from the center of the hitch pin hole to the center of the adjustment holes. It offer a maximum rise of 7 inches from the top of the receiver opening and a maximum drop of 3 inches from the top of the receiver opening. The shank has a weight capacity up to 14,000 pounds....

An installation video is linked for you; this shows a 2016 model year. For a brake controller the Prodigy P3 # 90195 that you referenced is an excellent choice. • Availability of Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution Compatible with 2-1/2 Inch Receiver

The Equal-I-zer system you would choose will depend on the fully loaded and ready to tow tongue weight of your trailer, plus the weight of anything carried in the bed behind the rear truck axle. I'll link you to an FAQ article that outlines how to determine your trailer's tongue weight. For tongue weights up to but not exceeding 400 lbs, use part #...

  • Best 2-1/2 Inch Weight Distribution System for a 7,000 Lb Trailer
I do have options for you but Husky does not make a weight distribution shank that will work with a 2-1/2" receiver tube opening. I also cannot confirm that any of the other brands that make a weight distribution shank for a 2-1/2" receiver tube opening will work with a Husky system. Therefore, you can either use a reducer sleeve like part # 58102 or sell the Husky Center Line Weight Distribution part # HT32218 that you have to recoup some of the money and then purchase a new system...
