An example of sag on a vehicle's rear axle under a heavy load

Whether you're hauling heavy loads in your bed or cargo area or you're towing a trailer, you will often see the rear of your vehicle sag while the front end rises. In these cases, the rear axle is handling not only the weight of the cargo, but also more of the vehicle's weight. Because less weight is on the front axle, the front tires are making less contact with the road. Overall handling - traction, steering, and braking - is negatively affected. But the resistance from Timbren's Suspension Enhancement System works with your factory suspension to keep your vehicle level and improve your driving experience.

Diagram of the Timbren spring installed

The Timbren system comes with custom-fit brackets that are bolted onto each frame rail above the rear axle. Hollow rubber springs are bolted to the bottom of the bracket and hang down to where the bottom of the spring sits, 1" above the axle. The inch of clearance allows the existing factory suspension to operate normally under light loads and standard terrain, ensuring the smooth, comfortable ride that you are used to.

Animation of a standard Timbren rubber spring

Timbren Suspension Enhancement Systems are designed to work progressively. When the hollow rubber springs are compressed, the convoluted design causes them to quickly collapse along the folds. Once the folds are compacted, the stacked barrel shape increases resistance, stiffening the suspension and keeping your vehicle level.

Timbren suspension system works to prevent body roll

Each hollow rubber spring works independently to support the driver's side or passenger's side of your vehicle. This is helpful when you swerve or make sharp turns. Each spring is activated when it is needed, so body roll is greatly reduced. The independent action also works well when you are hauling off-center loads.

An example of a trailers swaying

Because the vehicle handles better with the springs, less turbulence will be passed along to the trailer, and this helps to keep the trailer in line. Your driving comfort is further enhanced if the trailer does begin to sway (from a gust of wind or a passing semi), because the movement from the trailer is not transferred to your vehicle. This also works to make the sway subside more quickly.

An empty truck on a bumpy road without Timbren

Another great feature of the rubber construction is that the springs absorb most of the road shock, creating a smoother, more stable ride overall. Wear and tear on the factory suspension is also lessened because the rubber springs work to prevent bottoming out on rough roads.

Timbren Suspension Enhancement Compared to the Competition

Timbren's Suspension Enhancement Systems are much easier to install than air springs - there are no air hoses to run, no compressors or gauges to hook up, and no manual adjustments to make. The rubber construction makes Timbren's springs more elastic than similar products constructed of microcellular urethane. And more elasticity allows for a more comfortable ride because the rubber has more travel.

Video Transcript for Timbren Front and Rear Suspension Enhancement Systems Review

Speaker 1: Today we're going to be taking a look at the Timbren line of suspension enhancement systems. Any time that we add weight to our vehicle, it's going to put a lot of strain and stress on the suspension, especially if we're towing a heavy camper, trailer, or we have a heavy load in the back.Tends to have the back end squat down, which again, it's going to put that strain and stress on the rear suspension because not only are we asking it to hold up the weight of the vehicle, but everything else that we add on to it. Which that can arise a lot of different issues. The front end is going to be getting pulled off, which will misalign our headlights, and our tires won't have as much contact, so our steering and braking is going to be diminished. But tat;s where timbrens are going to come into play. They're going to provide us that extra support so that when we do have those heavy loads, the back end doesn't sag down quite as much, and it's not putting so much stress on the back end. By doing that, the front end's not going to rise up, which means our headlights will be in line and our tires will have the correct amount of contact and pressure, so our braking and steering isn't affected.

And they're going to do that all while making our ride more comfortable with that extra load. Our timbrens are going to provide us the support we need by replacing our factory jump stops and mounting in between the frame and the axle. Now, yours may look different, so you want to double check inaudible 00:01:20 fit guide for your specific application. Now, each one of our timbrens is going to feature a steel bracket. They're all going to have black, powder coat finish on them to resist that rust and corrosion or any other kind of chemicals that may be on the road. They're going to have a hollow, rubber ayon 00:01:36 spring that's going to take a lot of that pressure and strain off of the rear suspension.Whenever we do load our vehicle down, the space between our frame and our axle is going to get smaller. That's where our spring is going to make contact with the axle, and it's going to start compressing.

Now, they are progressively rated, so if we have a small load or a light load, it's going to have a little soft engagement. But the further it gets compressed, the harder and stiffer it becomes, giving us the support we need with those heavy loads. And since they are rubber, they're going to have a lot of give to them, which means they're going to give us the support we need. But at the same time, they're going to give us some more cushion and absorb some of the road shock as we drive. And since the rear ones here aren't in constant contact with our aXle, it is going to provide us the same ride quality when it's unloaded. Our timbrens are going to work independently from each other from side to side. That way, if we have an off center load, it will help compensate for that, but at the same time, if we take an evasive maneuver or a really sharp turn, this is going to help reduce that body roll and some of that sway feeling that we get going on when we have a lot of added weight. Our timbrens for the rear are going to be a good enhancement for any time you're going to be adding weight to the back of your vehicle, whether it be a heavy trailer, a large load in the back or any other situation where you're adding a lot of weight to the back of your vehicle. Now, timbrens on the front are going to be a little bit different.

They're going to provide us that load-leveling support and make sure the front end doesn't get pushed down too far. However, these typically are going to be in contact all the time, which means it's going to give us that support and help reduce on that body roll all the time, all while absorbing that road shock, giving us a smoother ride. Now, some situations where you'd want that extra support on the front of the vehicle to keep it from getting pushed down too much would be if you have a snow plow or winch, if you flat-tow your vehicle, or if you have any other heavy accessory on the front. This is going to make sure that front end stays where it should be, and again, making sure our tires, braking and steering acts how they should. When comparing the timbrens to other suspension enhancement options like airbags, these are going to be a lot easier to install because we're not going to have to worry about running lines, maintaining air pressure, putting in switches or compressors or any of that. Once these are installed, these are going to be completely maintenance free. However, airbags are going to provide us with a lot more adjustability, whereas our timbrens are not going to have that. That'll finish up your look at the timbrens suspension enhancement systems..

Both sides in 20 min with air tools. Have 5th wheel (2500 hitch weight) and made the 17 F250 sag a little. This will help. Now my sticking point is price. Feel like I got ripped off seeing these rubber Kong dog toys that I paid Guess no different than paying $50 for under armor $20 sweat pants. OK, complaining over and would I buy them again? Got to my house when I was told they would. Put these on a 2017 F350 Dually that I turned into a tow truck. Took about 5 minutes to put them on and the truck is completely different when towing. I towed my 2012 F350 before and after and it’s literally a night and day difference. Before, I felt like I was going to skate across the road and now it’s like there’s a little Toyota Camry on the back. I didn’t put the extra inch spacer because I was worried about ride quality, however I think I will in the future just so I feel better. My truck does still squat, however my application is completely different than pulling a normal trailer being that I do have an entire vehicle added directly to my truck’s suspension.Didn’t get any befores of me lifting the exact same vehicles, but it’s definitely different. I probably will add small helper springs later just being that I do constantly have a load as my lift on my truck weighs 1800lbs. alone. 585872

I ordered timbrens for the front and rear of my chevy 2500. I have a 2000 lb truck camper and I wanted something to help carry the load a little better. I had no idea that my front bump stops had worn away to almost nothing until I installed these. They have worn well and performed well so far. 628835

Solid Product! Yeah it's a stiffer ride when loaded But that's the sacrifice made to have more control of the haul while underway. Definitely recommend to anyone wanting to stay more level with a heavy boat/trailer setup as in my case. Not that install is hard but removal of spare tire before install, may have helped with space if you don't have a lift. 511931

Installed on my 2007 Ram 3500 because I wanted basic leveling & stability under the load of my 5th wheel. I didn't want a complicated air bag system. Summer trips in the mountains of MT & the Pacific NW. 3 months of snowbirding throughout southern AZ this winter. Very satisfied, so I just swapped them onto my new 2018 Ram 3500. I didn't let them go with my trade-in. Just what I need, no effect when empty - engaged when I need them. 628560

Received my Timbrens very quickly, very well packaged. Installed them is less than 30 minutes. Have yet to hook my rv to the truck, but can see these are going to be really helpful. About 1" to my axle where my OEM bump stops were a good 7" As always etrailer rocks!! Look forward to dealing with these folks when the need arises again. 484817

These do really well for supporting a full load or trailer attached. But if unloaded the will create whiplash if you go over a speed bump or anything that creates the axle to spring up and hit them. 611025

Night and day difference while towing. This is one of the best additions to my truck. My camper is around 7k pounds. My back end doesn't sag as much and doesn't bounce as ki when towing. Not noticeable when unloaded. I recommend this to everyone e who tows. 613728

Review from a similar Timbren Aeon Spring System in Vehicle Suspension

I bought Timbrens to install on my 2015 Silverado 2500HD truck, which I use to haul our 5th wheel. I had a set of airbags on my old GMC and they worked well, however, they were a concern when it came to maintenance. I saw a review and recommendation for Timbrens and thought they were a great alternative to having airbags installed. I read the instructions and can see no problems with installing them myself - thereby not only saving in the cost over the airbags, but also not having to pay anyone to install the Timbrens. Everything I have read about them makes me feel very good. I don't see the truck lowering with the 5th wheel attached, but having the Timbrens installed will take away any worries with rough roads. 613453

Review from a similar Timbren Aeon Spring System in Vehicle Suspension

I finally had a chance to try these out and they work great. Granted, I do have what they market an ultra-light travel trailer, but for my configuration of my 2007 Dodge Durango (4.7L), this trailer totals out about 75% of my towing capacity. That being said, this vehicle has an abnormally smooth ride for it's size. Because of this, the weight at the hitch creates a slight sag in the rear when weighted over 400 lbs. It also created some suspension characteristics I didn't like, like the slow bounce over undulations. I was advised my shocks were in perfect condition and utilizing stiffer shocks would not prevent the sag and would make the overall ride too tight for me. This was the reason for looking into this option. Installation was as simple as it gets (pull off the old and put on the new). The only tools (if you want to call it that) are possibly a couple of 2x4 blocks (of course you're going to need a jack to jack up your vehicle). 4 inches total was needed to properly seat them. It took a total of 30 minutes, but 20 minutes was me pulling out my jack and jack stands, finding blocks, and taking my sweet time. My Durango rode as level as expected after installation. Photos would not show anything noticeable without actually measuring it (about 450 lbs on the tongue with my particular trailer - see photos). I also didn't have to adjust my mirrors, which was inherent in the slight sag I had before. It took bumps well and the ride was not as bouncy as before, more firm and controlled. The ride without the trailer is noticeably firmer, and with little bumps you can tell they're making contact. Mostly noticeable over speed bumps where my Durango would normally float over them due to the long travel. My Durango inherently didn't ride like a truck or large SUV, more like a sedan. Now, it "sorta" rides more like a truck. Not a deal breaker, but if you like your truck to keep riding smooth, these might not be for you. Pros: Works as advertised. Easy installation. Keeps your vehicle level. Firmer more controlled ride. Removed annoying bounces. Great quality build. Cons: With the clearance from your axel to your bump stop now ~1.5 inches, bumps will be felt if making contact (-1 star for me, but if this is not an issue for your application, you should add the star back). Overall, I would highly recommend this product, even for a smaller SUV like my Dodge Durango. That being said, it won't have the same smooth ride with the long travel as before, but definitely worth it if you're towing with the same type of vehicle. 489147

Comments

After a year of use, the product continues to perform as expected. I have specifically put about 6-8 trips with this product and I have not had any issues. This included many miles on the highways and some trail driving. The product continues to perform well, assisting on absorbing undulations and helps keep the vehicle stable and level. I did not mention this before, but its important to know that this product is only a supplement to an already stable suspension and correctly-weighted setup. If properly used, this product will enhance your driving experience, but it will not fix any overweight or setup issues. I still highly recommend this product.

Review from a similar Timbren Aeon Spring System in Vehicle Suspension

This product seems as described in etrailer catalog and by salesperson. Very easy to install, both sides and clean up 30 minutes (actual install time was about 15-20 minutes). My truck has 100 gal fuel cell and tool box that is pretty full, so I generally have an extra 1200 lbs in bed of truck full time. Looking at truck it sits level instead of rear sitting up a little, not a big deal except headlights aim a little higher and when pulling trailer with skid steer or mini, truck sags an amount that looks overloaded. After installed truck bed height looks close to an unloaded truck. With full fuel cell the truck rests on the Timbren Suspension Enhancement System, I was pleasantly pleased with the ride and look of the truck. The only minor difference is when truck comes to complete stop, there is a slight "jiggle" in truck. Very minor but it is noticeable. I would definitely recommend and purchase again. I can't wait to see how system performs with loaded trailer hooked up. 594996

Ordered these from Etrailer.com and got them in three days. Super easy to install on Ram 3500. Didn't have to jack up truck. Assembled is 6.5" on Ram 3500, I had 7" to play with so plenty of room. Haven't added a load yet as 5th wheel is on order. Looking forward to it. 609612

The installation took about a half hour on our 2006 Winnebago View. I did not need to remove the tires, just jacked it up enough to unload the suspension a bit. The upgrades have quieted down the front suspension both reducing hard suspension hits and body lean. The front of the View is definitely more settled. Pros: Simplicity, and ease of install. measurable difference in RV suspension performance. Cons: expensive for what they are. The long bolts used do not inspire confidence. 220089

Review from a similar Timbren Aeon Spring System in Vehicle Suspension

These "enhanced" bump-stops have definitely improved the ride quality of my 2013 Ram 1500 quad cab when pulling our 7500 lb. 29 foot travel trailer. The trailer probably has 500+ pounds of food, clothes, kids toys, etc inside as well. The truck bed probably has another 800'ish pounds of equipment in it that compresses the suspension before I even hook the trailer up. With the stock stops the rear suspension hardly moved. After adding the new stops, the rear suspension had travel again and the steering felt less twitchy. Unloaded truck will hit the new stops only if I hit a pretty harsh bump but it's only noticeable if you're paying attention to it. With a loaded bed (no trailer) hitting the stops is more noticeable but you still need to hit a decent bump for them to touch. They are very easy to install. Take the time to read the instructions and watch the installation video before you pay someone $50-$75 for a 15-20 minute job. I would buy them again. 482362

Our 2015 Pilot 4WD was rated to tow up to 4500 LBS. We bought a 3000 lb.trailer that had a tongue weight of around 375lbs. The heavy tongue weight caused the back end of the Pilot to sag and bounce when towing. After having the Timbren Enhancement Sys. THROD2 installed there is NO sag and NO bounce when towing! It has not changed the suspension characteristics when not towing either. I highly recommend this product . Install from an independent shop was $225. This product was worth every penny! 607473

OEM was OK (good enough), but the Timberlin enhancement reduced front end bounce and sway on rough roads significantly -- noticeably. (Rear Timberlin suspension enhancements were installed prior to delivery/acceptance from dealer). The Timberlin shock arrestors are three times larger than OEM. Cost to install by experienced mechanic -- $65 (less than an hour). We're happy with it. (The Sprinter has an OEM rear anti sway bar, it could also use a front anti-sway bar as well when the vehicle is used for long trips.) Having said all that, I favor the Sprinter over other Class C and B+ chassis without these modifications. 297039

Review from a similar Timbren Aeon Spring System in Vehicle Suspension

I bought a set like these for my previous Tacoma and liked them so much I bought another pair for my new Tacoma. These are great because they are so simple to put in and when the vehicle is not loaded you do not notice any difference in the ride. When loaded it keeps the truck from sagging and makes it more stable on the turns. Incredible product. 90312

  • Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement System Compatible with 2017 Ford F-350 Super Duty
  • First of all, thank you for your service. Unfortunately at this time we don't offer a military discount, but we do have free shipping most of the time on orders like this one. To confirm your fit, we have two sets of jounce springs available from Timbren that are confirmed to fit your 2017 Ford F-350 Super Duty. The Timbren Suspension Enhancement System - Rear Axle # TFRTT350J with a weight rating of 8,000 lbs and the # TFR350SDJ rated for 8,600 lbs. These springs will have a slightly...

  • Height of Timbren Helper Springs for a 2017 Ford F-250
  • There are actually just 2 Timbren helper spring kits for the 2017 Ford F-250. First we have # TFR250SDJ which has an 8,600 pound capacity and fits 2- and 4-wheel drive models. And second we have # TFRTT350J which is rated for 8,000 pounds and also fits 2- and 4-wheel drive models. So each of those part numbers appears twice because of the 2-wheel drive and 4-wheel drive categories. The springs in kit # TFR250SDJ are 4-1/2 inches tall and for kit # TFRTT350J they are 3-9/16 inches tall....

And second we have # TFRTT350J which is rated for 8,000 pounds and also fits 2- and 4-wheel drive models. The higher weight capacity and the fact it's not as popular as the lower rated kit is why there is a price difference. I prefer to recommend the lower capacity kit as it will give you a smoother unloaded ride quality.

  • Are Timbren Spacers Required for a Leveling Kit on a 2017 Ford F-350
  • Generally speaking, most leveling kits lift the front of the truck 1-2" to match the rear as the factory ride height on most pickup trucks nowadays is about 2" lower in the front than in the rear. This is usually to compensate for squatting while towing with a trailer. As long as the rear of the truck is not lifted then you will not need to use a spacer when installing the Timbren Suspension Enhancement System part # TFRTT350J on your 2017 Ford F-350. However, if the the leveling kit...

  • Will SumoSprings Part # SSR-115-47-2 Work with B&W Gooseneck Hitch on a 2016 Ford F-250
  • I do have a set of upgraded bump stops that will work with the B&W Turnoverball Underbed Gooseneck Trailer Hitch part # BWGNRK1111 on your 2016 Ford F-250 but the SumoSprings Rebel Custom Helper Springs part # SSR-115-47-2 will not. The mounting brackets on the B&W Gooseneck Hitch mounts in the same location (outside frame rail) as the SumoSprings therefore, will not work with one another. Instead, I recommend using either the SumoSprings Solo Custom Helper Springs part # SSR-127-54...

  • Comparing Timbren Suspension Kits for 2019 Ford F-350
  • For the rear suspension of your 2019 Ford F-350 there are two different Timbren suspension kits available. The heavy duty version part # TFRTT350J and the lighter duty # TFR350SDJ. The HD version is basically for severe duty applications like tow trucks or other applications where the truck will be basically at capacity at all times. If your application is more like recreational towing and wouldn't be at the capacity all the time the lighter duty option is the way to go.

  • Suspension Enhancement Recommendation for 2017 Ford F-350
  • I'd first make sure you aren't exceeding the capacity of your truck as 4 inches of squat for a 1 ton truck is quite a bit. Assuming you are within the capacities of your vehicle your best option is to use suspension enhancement to bring the rear suspension. Changing the ride height makes suspension enhancement installs more complicated and then it also makes towing the trailer level with enough bed rails clearance difficult too. Air suspension would be your best option since it will...

  • Best Timbren Suspension Enhancement for 2019 Ford F-350 Super Duty Towing Camper Trailer
  • The best Timbren Suspension Enhancement System fory our 2019 Ford F-350 is the Timbren # TFR350SDJ which are designed with recreational towing in mind, as opposed to the kits which are meant to be used with more heavy-duty work trucks. The Timbren # TFR350SDJ that fit your '19 F-350 are double-convoluted, which means they have more cushioning and give than the single-convoluted Timbrens like # TFRTT350J. This suspension enhancement system is going to improve the handling of your...

The Timbren # TFRTT350J for heavy duty (Severe Service Vehicle) applications measures 7" tall altogether. The spring is 3-5/8" tall and it comes with a 1" spacer and the same 2-3/8" tall bracket.

  • Best Timbren Suspension Enhancement System for a 2017 Ford F-250 with Truck Bed Camper
  • I spoke to my contact at Timbren and they stated that the Timbren Suspension Enhancement System part # TFRTT350J is actually designed for service trucks or in your case trucks with a truck bed camper. Therefore, this will be the perfect kit for your 2017 Ford F-250. I also informed them that you currently have 8" of space between your frame and axle plate to which they stated that would give you a distance of 1-1/4" between the bottom of the spring and top of the contact point on your...

  • Recommended Fifth Wheel Hitch With Adjustable Height Setting
  • I will be happy to explain which fifth wheel will give you the height you need tow your fifth wheel trailer. Yes, your numbers and measurements appear to be very accurate, thank you for being so detailed. We do recommend at least 6 inches of clearance between the top of the truck bed rails and the bottom of your trailer. The amount of squat will vary but estimating 2" to 3" is a fair assumption. Ideally you would want to prevent as much squat as possible and to do this I recommend suspension...

  • Suspension Enhancement Recommendation for 2019 Ford F-250 with Fifth Wheel Rail Kit
  • For your 2019 Ford F-250 with a fifth wheel hitch rail kit installed in the bed of you'd need to go with a Timbren kit part # TFRTT350J for suspension enhancement. The air bag kit install brackets won't fit with the fifth wheel rail brackets as they occupy the same portion of the truck frame. The Timbrens are a great solution though as they give you the same support and don't require you to ever have to inflate any bags. They basically are there when you need then and when not needed you...

  • The Timbren Suspension Enhancement System # TFRTT350J referenced in your question is confirmed to fit your 2019 Ford F-250 and will do a great job of adding support to the rear axle. If you have a true suspension lift on your F-250 where the axle was actually moved further from the frame then you will likely need to add a spacer. • Suspension Enhancement Recommendation for 2017 Ford F-250 with Pull Rite Rail Kit 2766
  • Firestone lists their Ride Rite Kit part # F2600 as a confirmed fit for your 2017 Ford F-250 with an in-bed hitch rail kit like the Pull-Rite setup you have. But looking up the install instructions for your Pullrite ISR 2766 they use a very large bracket that mounts to the outside of the frame where the Firestone kit would interfere with. Instead your best option would be the Timbren suspension kit part # TFRTT350J which installs in an area that would allow your Pullrite rails to fit.

  • Timbren Jounce Spring Clearance to Axle in Ford F-250
  • You have your Timbren jounce bumpers installed correctly in your F-250. The ideal spacing from the bottom of the spring to the top of the axle is right around that same half-inch that you have. In some applications the gap can be larger but 1/2-inch is within spec. This is enough of a gap that the springs will not engage when the truck is unloaded but close enough that the springs will engage the axle when there is a load, either cargo in the bed or trailer tongue weight.

  • Recommended Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement for a 2017 Ford F-350
  • For your 2017 Ford F-350, you have two options. You can go with either the Timbren Suspension Enhancement System part # TFR350SDJ or part # TFRTT350J. I recommend using the Timbren Suspension Enhancement System part # TFR350SDJ as these aeon springs are rated for a higher weight capacity and are made of a thicker rubber. The hollow rubber springs sit above the rear axle below the frame to help stabilize and provide up to 8,600 lbs of load support capacity. They are designed to provide...

  • Leveling 2019 Ford F-250 with Service Body
  • The Timbren suspension enhancement # TFRTT350J is the easiest to install option to level your 2019 Ford F-250. This system is designed to be under a constant heavy load like what you have with your service body. The two springs work independently of each other so they're great at fixing the lean your truck is doing because of the off-center weight. To install the Timbrens you remove your current factory bump stops and put the Timbrens in their place. Once they're installed they're...

  • Is It Okay if Timbren Kit part # TFRTT350J Isn't Perfectly Centered over Axle
  • You are totally fine. Thanks for sending in the picture of your Timbren kit part # TFRTT350J installed, and while it is not sitting perfectly square on the axle it is close enough to provide enough contact needed to work well. Due to how vehicles flex through the chassis, suspension, and frame bushings there might be a bit of variance in how the Timbren comes down and hits the axle every time.
