Suspension Enhancement Recommendation for 2022 Ford F-350 with Camper

Updated 02/23/2026 | Published 02/16/2026

Question:

I own a 2022 F350, XL, FX4, dually, 7.3 gasser, w/camper package equipped with a single rear upper overload spring. I haul a slide-in camper weighing 6000-6500 lbs. I am under the 14,000 lb GVWR, but am bumping it depending how much gear I carry. The rear end squat is about 4” and I would like to reduce that at least 2” to get the truck closer to level.. In your professional opinion, what is the best, most economical suspension upgrade I could make? I’ve looked into Timbrens, Sumo, and larger upper overload bump stops to engage the upper overload leaf spring sooner than the stock install, as well as trying to find an “add a leaf” upper overload which I have yet to find for this truck. The truck will be loaded about 75 of the time. Solo ride comfort is not the main consideration, but would be desirable. Please offer a recommendation.

Hey Tony, if you are wanting additional suspension support and are concerned about ride quality at all the best solution is the Roadactive Suspension Kit part # RAS3611-SLHD as this is only option that will give the additional support you are looking for and actually improves ride quality. This can provide up to 3,000 lbs of additional suspension support to what your vehicle has currently.

If maximum support is desired and ride quality is not a concern then Timbren Severe Service kit part # TFRTT350J would be the way to go but that 25 percent of the time you are driving unloaded it will be pretty harsh.

Since you really just want to get back around 2 inches of sag the RAS kit will get you there and will provide best ride quality so that would be what I would go with. How does your truck handle with the camper?

Jameson, Thanks for the recommendations. I have not yet driven this camper on my truck. We just received the truck a couple weeks ago. I plan to test drive it soon with a "close as I can get" travel load and then go weigh it, but other current priorities won't allow me to do that till early March. You've also helped me with a question about Timbrens specifically as well as Hellwig helper springs PN HE89FR (Hellwig PN 9706). In another thread you said the Hellwigs are an alternate solution but would not add as much additional support as the Timbrens. Do the Hellwig HE89FR springs have a 2000 capacity or something different?

@TonyN Hellwigs # HE89FR don't have a weight rating so it's hard to say exactly. They aren't adjustable either but some people really like them. For as heavy as your setup will be they wouldn't be my first choice but they would be better than nothing and the price is great.

@JamesonC Yessir, I agree. I saw on line that the rating might be 2000 #. As you said, not the best but something. I did speak with Hellwig about their LP25 (2500#) and LP35 (3500#) springs which would work well. These spring packs have 3 and 4 leafs respectively. However, I would have to remove my factory installed upper overload which I, as a DIYer, am not willing to take on. The u-bolts that hold the spring pack are large and require a significant sized torque wrench to reinstall. Doable but not desireable. I suppose I may have limited options since I do not want to go with air springs and that would be the Timbrens. I am waiting for a followup from Timbren since this truck, with a raised body, needs a special P/N. It may be as simple as an additional 1" spacer for the TFRTT350J kit, which a prior Etrailer customer had done to his pickup very similar to mine.

@TonyN Is the Roadactive kit something you'd consider at all?

Tony, Jameson asked me to chime in. I recently put Helwig on my F-150. It’s under a constant load of 600-700 lbs as an overland rig. While it only lifted the rear about an inch, ride quality is far better than without. Much less bouncing etc. I’m not a great mechanic and they only took an hour or so to install. Very simple and intuitive. I’m guessing you might need something more for your setup but at the same time, it’s not an expensive experiment compared to the alternatives.
