Roadmaster Comfort Ride Slipper Springs

Upgrade your current trailer suspension setup with the Comfort Ride system from Roadmaster. The Comfort Ride provides an improved towing experience for your tandem-axle trailer. Unlike traditional equalizers, the center hanger boxes in this system prevent shock transfer between axles, creating a smoother ride. In order to absorb and dissipate any road-induced shock that occurs, heavy-duty shock absorbers are included.

Leaf Spring Setup

One end of each of the included leaf springs will attach to a hanger welded onto your trailer. The eye of the front spring will attach to your existing front hanger, and the eye of the rear spring will attach to the rear hanger. The flat slipper end of each spring will slide into the provided center hanger box.

Roadmaster Comfort Ride Center Hanger Box

This center hanger box differs from a traditional equalizer, which typically connects the 2 springs on a tandem-axle trailer. In a standard equalizer setup, any vibration or road-induced force gets transferred between the axles until it eventually dissipates. This occurs because standard equalizers are built with pivot points at their center. So each time the front axle hits a bump in the road, the movement of that axle causes the spring to jump. This pivots the equalizer, which transfers movement to the rear spring and, in turn, to the rear axle, creating an ongoing wave of motion.

Roadmaster Comfort Ride Slipper Spring Rollers In Center Hanger Box

With the Comfort Ride setup, the center hanger sits flush with your trailer frame, preventing any movement of the box itself. This isolates each spring, thus eliminating any connection between the axles. To ensure that each spring is still able to move along with the axle, preventing an overly stiff ride, the flat end of the spring mounts in the center hanger box between a roller and a safety bolt. Having a roller positioned above the flat end will keep the spring from hopping inside of the box. Any up-and-down motion the spring incurs will be translated into front-to-back motion to create a smoother, quieter, more controlled ride.

The independent axle operation will improve handling and braking performance as well. Axle roll up occurs when the trailer's rear tires are lifted off the ground while braking, resulting in weight and traction being lost on the rear tires. With the Comfort Ride system installed, tire traction increases by as much as 70 percent during braking because there is no axle roll up. The result is a safer, more comfortable towing experience.

Gas Shocks Absorb Road Vibration

Instead of transferring shock between axles, the Comfort Ride setup ensures that each spring freely absorbs and dissipates any road-induced force on its own. In order to do this, heavy-duty shocks are included.

Roadmaster Comfort Ride Shock Absorber

The gas-powered springs inside of the shocks' sealed cylinders compress and extend as you drive. The compression and extension of the springs creates enough force to offset the amount of incoming force or vibration that occurs when you tow over rough or uneven terrain.

You'll experience up to a 50 percent reduction in the force that's transferred to your trailer while traveling on paved roads. You'll also receive up to a 76 percent reduction over cobblestones and a 94 percent reduction over gravel roads. This means improved handling, even over potholes and uneven pavement, and the contents of your trailer will stay in place during travel.

Roadmaster Comfort Ride Shock Absorbers Installed

Typically, when shocks are installed on a trailer, they're positioned at a more horizontal angle. But this positioning doesn't compensate very well for the up-and-down movement of the trailer's suspension. Roadmaster's patented adjustable frame brackets are specifically designed to allow these shocks to be mounted at a nearly vertical angle. As a result, these shocks will have the leverage necessary to limit up-and-down and lateral movement during both compression and rebound.

Rigorous Testing Standards

This Comfort Ride system has endured rigorous testing to ensure its durability and longevity. This testing includes computerized Finite Element Analysis, which establishes guidelines to ensure superior product quality and safety. Roadmaster also tested these shock absorbers at the Navistar Proving Grounds, a private test facility that provides real-world handling and safety testing. The result is a safe, long-lasting product that you can trust.

Installation

Installation of the Comfort Ride system is fairly straightforward.

The eyes of the slipper springs attach to the welded hangers on your trailer's frame using your existing suspension bolts. The center hanger boxes bolt over your existing center hangers and secure in place with the provided hardware. Once the safety bolts and rollers are installed in the center boxes, just slide the slipper ends of the springs in so that they rest between the bolts and the rollers.

To install the shocks, begin by replacing your U-bolt tie plates with the plates included in this kit. You will need to retain your existing U-bolts and nuts for installation. Once the tie plates are installed, bolt the upper mounting brackets to your trailer's frame with the included hardware. Some drilling is required when mounting the brackets to the frame. Finally, attach the shocks between the tie plates and the frame brackets.

After 1 year we are still very pleased. Have about 5000 miles towing and it is a much better ride. Worth the money. Ride is much better. We did have it professionally installed. It's a pretty big project for a driveway mechanic 775901

great product, I'm a fabrication/designer, well thought out and much better than the original factory suspension. I also added structural kickers to the suspension hangers to help side load generated while turning and not relying on the hangers for strength. I also replaced the original factory u bolts, might as well have all new going back on 728150

Installation was easier than expected. You need to be somewhat mechanical inclined when attempting this on your own. Invest in some good jacks and even the small jack stands to hold the axles. Ride difference was noticed on the first trip out. Would recommend this to anyone with factory standard suspension system. I also added the Reese Goosebox hitch and with these two together WOW what a difference. Wife isn’t complaining anymore of chucking and being jerked around. That’s worth the investment all day long. 883520

OMG! After having the trailer bottom out on the stock springs while traversing a RR crossing, this system has proven to be amazing. Returning from a VA campground I crossed multiple RR crossings and traveled some rough pavement. I found I had left a bottle of shower soap on the ledge in the shower! It was still there when I set up in my yard. Not possible with the stock suspension! 777008

Exceeded my expectations in performance on not so great highways across the United States. Porpoise action of the 5th wheel almost entirely eliminated. I strongly recommend this product to anyone. 769518

This was absolutely the BEST purchase I've made for my fifth wheel to date, hands down. Went from having very rough chucking/porpoising/bouncing to a rig that drives like a Cadillac. Seriously. If you are having issues with this while pulling your trailer, THIS is the product to install. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!! 672641

This has got to be one of the best purchases that I have ever made. Needed a bit longer bolt than was provided on a trailer. These bolts added the extra length I needed and were a perfect fit. Didn’t have to bend them open or closed to get them through the tieplate holes. 603632

Installation was as shown on videos Directions were clear and all parts were included and well packaged. I need to move the gray water drain line with being all plastic was not a problem. I’ve only pulled the trailer about 5 miles since the installation I believe it’s made a large difference in the ride in the tow vehicle and the sway and handling of the trailer. The only negative I found is the shock bolts bolts are metric and the assembly bolts are SAE easy to confuse a half inch self locking nut with a 12 mm. Ruined 1/2 inch nut requiring a trip to the hardware store. A good half inch drive impact wrench is a huge labor saver and putting the 32 self tapping bolts into the trailer frame. 720830

Review from a similar Comfort Ride in Trailer Leaf Spring Suspension

Just finished installing the Roadmaster shock system on my Momentum 398M tri-axle. The kit arrived well packaged and all items were included. The instructions that come with it are pretty straight forward and easy to understand. This would probably be a lot quicker install with some helping hands, but I did it by myself in about 6 hours. The hardest part of the entire setup is all of the overhead drilling, but with a little redneck ingenuity I was able to make that bearable. As far as this kit goes, the ordering process and the outstanding customer service from Angela W, etrailer.com rocks!! This could be the start of a wonderful relationship.. 630834

Still feel it is the best upgrade you can do short of going independent. Still a great product for the price.

Arrived very well boxed, nice heavy brackets, fit well with exception of trying to get angle and length both correct. But after a bit of thinking and grinding and welding every thing worked out quit well. Will find out next week how much improved it will be, as we start our annual long trip estimate about 12,000 miles this trip out. 694448

Review from a similar Comfort Ride in Trailer Leaf Spring Suspension

I installed the RoadMaster shock system on my new 30 foot fifth wheel because the first time we took the new trailer out (before shocks), the trailer bounced so much that the bouncing broke some plates in our rear kitchen cabinets. The product was straight forward to install. The only hard part was all the drilling into the frame to mount the top brackets. Working on my back, under the trailer, and around the springs with hot metal shavings dropping on my face was not pleasant. However, the installation was fairly straight-forward and the product seems to be very sturdy. I have not taken the trailer out to test the system yet but have two trips planned near term. However, based on how well my previous 5th wheel rode with shocks installed, I fully expect this installation to be well worth the money and I believe it should solve my bouncy trailer problem. 560561

Review from a similar Comfort Ride in Trailer Leaf Spring Suspension

I installed this shock kit along with the Roadmaster RM-2560 Slipper Spring System in our 2011 Keystone Cougar 245RKS. As the model number implies, this is a rear kitchen unit. I had over 30,000 towing miles on this trailer and the bouncing trailer caused many issues: doors opening, dishes (and other items) getting thrown around inside the cabinets, many loose fasteners, etc. I had always wanted to add shock absorbers, but this new Roadmaster kit prompted me to replace the springs as well as the shocks. Our trailer has 4500 pound axles, so I was somewhat concerned that the shock kit was designed for 5200-7000 pound axles. But the Roadmaster people assured me that the kit would work fine with the 4500 pound axles, and it does! I did a quick calculation that showed that the new springs are about 14% stiffer than the originals. The shocks easily accommodate the slightly stiffer springs. The kit was relatively easy to install, but you will need multiple jacks and floor stands. Care needs to be taken to get the mounting holes for the spring box correctly located and drilled for simple installation, and my experience went fine. The ride height was very minimally affected - the kit has multiple mounting holes that help with this. And, I was able to use the original u-bolts to mount the new springs, although the instructions implied that I might need longer bolts. We have recently returned from a 7000 mile trip and I am very pleased with the Roadmaster kit. The ride improvement was immediately noticed and things do not get bounced around nearly as much as before. The trailer is also noticeably more stable and not affected as much by wind and passing big rigs. It is really great to get rid of the equalizer link that tied the ends of the original leaf springs together in the middle and allows the trailer to have a proper independent suspension. 614184

Along with the new springs....everything works as advertised. Well satisfied. No complaints. I had to modify the one set of shock brackets to fit, as I have raised the trailer 5 inches to match up with the 4 inch raised truck. Otherwise...no swaying....no bouncing........no problems. Thanks etrailer for your help. 854164

I purchased this system for our 2018 Coachman Chaparral. We had noticed that it would sway after crossing bridges and especially when coming out of a curve or while turning. I found this system to be very helpful. I welded the mounting brackets to the frame of the 5th wheel and bolted the rest as instructed. I would recommend this product to anyone that wants to stabilize their RV. Thank you for allowing me to write a review. 824980

Review from a similar Comfort Ride in Trailer Leaf Spring Suspension

We bought a new Grand Design 22 foot Travel Trailer and Ford Expedition Tow Vehicle. Even after we installed a Curt Trunnion Bar Equalizer Hitch, the trailer bucking was unbearable for long trips. It was so bad we were ready to sell the whole rig. The suspension of all travel trailers is sub-standard. We bought the Roadmaster RM-2450 Shock absorber kit and installed it ourselves. It made a WORLD OF DIFFERENCE in the ride! However, the installation was not easy for a 76 year old man. Thanks to a neighbor with a flat paved driveway and an extensive tool inventory, I got it done. You need pre-planning and high jack stands. Read the instructions and view some online videos before committing. Verify that there are no gas or water pipes next to the trailer frames. Determining the location of the upper shock frame bracket is tricky. This measurement sets the angle of the shock absorber, and has to be done BEFORE you lift the trailer and remove the wheels! You have to have the trailer loaded, the wheels on the ground and the tow vehicle connected. Then install one shock absorber from the bottom up and measure where the upper bracket sets on the frame. Then you can disconnect and lift the trailer up on jack stands and drill the frame holes. I was lucky that I was close to the IDEAL 35 degree angle on my trailer. I don't know what you would do if you are outside the 25 to 40 degree allowable range. The instructions say you have to get 12" long drill bits to drill into the bottom of the frame. There's not enough clearance to insert a standard drill between the springs and frame. Pushing the drill up overhead, and having the bit tight to the springs makes it almost impossible to get the holes straight. So when you drive the self tapping bolts into the holes it is very easy to strip them. A better solution is to have a low profile angle drill. Otherwise you'll be welding the brackets or glueing bolts. We also installed heavy duty shackles, wet bolts and bronze bushings while the trailer was up on the jack stands. You have to refer to other reviews for that. The Trailer Mfg. stock components are junk. 801724

Highly recommend adding these on your camper. We added them to our Grand Design 2400 BH which was a night and day difference in ride quality. This eliminated a lot of the porpoising, chucking and side to side roll that you sometimes get. I was amazed how much smoother of a ride pulling the camper is now. Running these shocks now in combination with the Road Armor Equalizers. 787053

Review from a similar Comfort Ride in Trailer Leaf Spring Suspension

Thank you for asking for a 1 year review as I never do them without enough test time. I have made several trips into western VA and West VA so have used the mountains and found it made a big difference in stability and bounce as advertised. No fault of the product but had I known I would have changed axles to next load level higher and kit to match. Instructions were pretty good, it does require some drilling through 3/16 steel 9/16" holes so having proper tools for job is essential. I got some trailer jack stands from [nationwide retailer] they provided safety at a reasonable cost. I highly recommend them. 783109

  • Roadmaster Comfort Ride Leaf Spring Kit for Grand Design Solitude 3350RL
In order to determine which leaf spring upgrade kit will work on your Grand Design Solitude you will need to know what size axles and how many axles you've got on the trailer. You can determine what axles are on the rig by checking the sticker/plate on the axle tubes; these identifiers will tell you who made the axle, its' capacity and/or diameter and will determine which suspension system is going to work best for you. Typically a Dexter 7k axle will have a diameter of 3 inches and an 8k axle will have a diameter of 3-1/2 inches. The thicker the axle the more weight it can handle. There really isn't an advantage to going with higher capacity leaf springs than needed. If the suspension is too stiff it doesn't really do it's job well as the ride would be rougher. Best recommendation I can make is to stick with the correct rated suspension you have on your trailer and then to not exceed the weight capacity...

On your 2019 Grand Design Reflection 311BHS I recommend using the Roadmaster Comfort Ride Shock Absorbers for Tandem Axle Trailers part # RM-2460. I have researched your camper and it weighs in at 13,998 lbs. roughly. This means that you should have two 7000 lb axles under it. To confirm this just ensure that your axles are 3" in diameter.
