Should I Upgrade to 8K Leaf Springs on My Toy Hauler with Tandem Axle Set-up 7K?

Hello, I have a 2022 Wolf pack 365 pack 16 And Ive heard a lot of stories about how weak the Leaf springs are. What would you recommend for replacement? I believe there are 7k axles on it but Ive heard of people putting 8k springs on ? thank you

Hello Matt,
Thanks for writing in, that’s a great question.
I’ve definitely heard the same concerns about the factory leaf springs on these, especially on larger toy haulers like your Wolf Pack. It makes sense to want something that’s going to hold up and not leave you dealing with sag or premature wear.
When it comes to your suspension, I don’t recommend going up to 8K springs on 7K axles. That can actually create a much harsher ride and lead to more bouncing, which puts additional stress on the suspension components instead of fixing the issue.
Since your trailer is a tandem axle setup with 7K axles, the best overall upgrade for ride quality would be the Roadmaster Comfort Ride Leaf Spring Suspension Kit # RM-2460-2570. This replaces your leaf springs and equalizers and adds shock absorbers, which makes a huge difference in how the trailer rides. It helps isolate each axle from the other and reduces bouncing, chucking, and road shock, so the trailer feels much more planted and controlled going down the road.
If you’re looking for something a bit simpler and more budget-friendly, adding SumoSprings is a great option. They work with your existing suspension to provide extra support and reduce bounce without making things overly stiff.
If your leaf springs sit under the axle, you would want the SumoSprings # SS33HR. If your leaf springs sit on top of the axle, you would want the # SS26MV. Since you have two axles, you would need one kit per axle.
Between the two options, the Roadmaster system is going to give you the biggest improvement in ride quality, while the SumoSprings are a great add-on if you’re not looking to fully replace the suspension.

I had the Roadmaster Slipper Springs with Shocks installed on my 34 foot travel trailer and glad I did. They endured our 18,000 mile trip from FL to Alaska and back. I can't begin to tell you the harsh road conditions, big holes, nasty roads, etc on the Alaskan Highway and other points in between. Broken springs and other things were common issues along the road. while we had our own repair issues but nothing to do with our springs or suspension. In fact they look as good now as they did before we left! It also gave me more ground clearance after install. It will give you better performance and peace of mind...

I did the Roadmaster Comfort Ride upgrade on my 2022 Grand Design Solitude 310GK two years ago. Did the install in the driveway with the help of a buddy. Two of us over two days. No problems with the install. We put 5-6k miles a year on the trailer and this set up has been great. For info, I did break a leaf spring on my previous trailer (2016 Reflection) and when it was repalced (under warranty), the technician said the other springs were "flat". I absolutely recommend this setup.

I put the slipper spring kit with shocks on my Artic Wolf 305 ML6 and went up a wt class on the slipper springs because I thought my springs were not enough. Mistake...They are now too harsh resulting in all the glass shelfs in my frig breaking and my rear curtain rods falling off in the back of my trailer. If you are going with them stick with the size that are on there because they are going to be just right. Not sure what I am going to do now. Probably go back to stock springs and just keep the shock kit.

Matt, I can understand why you’re thinking of going with the 8k over the 7k but (and this is just my opinion) upgrading to 8k leafs on 7 k axles will potentially move the stress points and could cause other issues. I have had the roadmaster with shocks on our reflection 337 for over a year and I can confirm the road master use a thicker leaf spring than stock. Your initial ride will be stiff and takes some break in time. It is a far superior system and will make a positive change in your trailer performance.

The change of our suspension system on our Montana 5th wheel improved the ride felt in the tow vehicle as well as seems to have made the trailer more stable in windy conditions. After a lot of miles in various weather and road conditions, I highly recommend the RoadMaster Comfort Ride system. We also added a set of Sumo Helper springs to insure we would not overload one set of springs in bad road conditions.
