How to Determine the Lift Capacity You Need in a Jack

A trailer jack is designed to lift the tongue of your trailer so you can connect the trailer coupler to your hitch ball. To do this, you'll need a jack with a lift capacity high enough to handle your trailer's tongue weight.

Tongue weight is the amount of weight that your trailer applies to the back of your tow vehicle. Typically, your tongue weight should be 10-15% of your total trailer weight (trailer + cargo). In other words, a 10,000-lb trailer would have a tongue weight between 1,000 lbs and 1,500 lbs. For a trailer this size, you would need a jack with a lift capacity of at least 1,500 lbs.

It's okay to have a jack with a weight rating that is higher than your trailer's tongue weight. In fact, a jack with a higher lift capacity should operate more efficiently, allowing you to spend less time cranking and more time camping.

Trailer and Camper Jack Lift

Every jack offers a certain amount of lift or travel. Screw travel is the distance the jack extends when you crank it (or toggle it to "extend" on an electric model). Some jacks include a drop leg for extra adjustability. On these jacks, you'll see the maximum extension of the drop leg listed in the specs as well. Adding the screw travel and drop leg travel together will give you the total lift. The total lift listed above can help you determine how high this jack will be able to raise your trailer.

Video Transcript for Bulldog Trailer Jack - A-Frame Jack - BD1700100317 Review

Today, we're going to review part number BD1700100317. This is the Bulldog Round A-Frame Jack with the Sidewind Handle and a 5000-pound weight capacity. This Bulldog Jack is ideal for multiple agricultural and commercial applications. This standard A-Frame Jack is a dependable jack which is recognized as an industry standard for a lot of the agricultural and commercial applications. They do use precision fitted parts which will provide exceptional stability and reliability. The mounting bracket which is the triangular piece right here can be welded on or can be bolted on using the three holes.

Now, the holes are 3 inches center to center which is the industry standard for the A-Frame Jacks. The sidewind handle has a smooth ergonomic design for easy cranking and also the outer and the inner tube are painted gray. Now, the footplate and the wheel caster assembly for the bottom which connects to the bottom of the jack is sold separately and if you pull up the product page for this part number usually to the right of the page, it will list the related products and it should show the footplate and the wheel caster assembly. Now, I do want to give you some measurements on this. The clearance which should be measured from the mounting bracket to the top of the jack will measure 14-3/4 inches for the clearance height.

Now, this jack is in the fully retracted position so the retracted height would be from the bottom of the jack to the mounting bracket, and that would measure 8.6 inches. Now, I do want to give you the extended height so the safe time, I pull another exact same jack and crank it up. Here it is in the fully extended position, so if we measure from the bottom to the mounting, it would be 23.6 inches. So to get the lift, if you would take the extended dimension of 23.6 and subtract the retracted dimension of 8.6, that will leave you with a lift of 15 inches so the maximum lift on this jack would be 15 inches. The inner tube is 2 inches in diameter.

The outer tube is 2-1/4 inches. The handle radius which is this measurement right here would measure 6.6 inches. Again, this jack has a lift capacity of 5000 pounds and it does come with a limited five-year warranty. And that should do it for our review on part number BD1700100317.

Once I decided on the tongue jack I wanted, I placed my order with etrailer. The ordering was easy, shipping was prompt and the jack was delivered a day earlier than expected (even considering the Christmas season and the pandemic).

Installation was honestly a 5-minute task: raise the old jack, remove three bolts, remove the old jack, drop in the new jack, replace bolts. Perfect fit! And the Bulldog jack is certainly much beefier than the one I replaced. The jack is for a 2018 Casita Liberty Deluxe.

If I were to order again, I’d probably opt for the zinc Jack as I believe over the years it would hold up a bit better to the elements.

All the jack dimensions provided by etrailer were a tremendous help in determining the size of jack to order.

Overall, a great purchase experience with eTrailer.

After the gears on my original/stock A-frame sidewind jack had stripped and failed (BAL 2000 mounted on my 2017 Forest River Rockwood mini-lite model 2306 with a dry weight of 4005 lbs), I replaced it with another BAL 2000 sidewind model which lasted less than 6 months before the gears also had stripped and failed. After reviewing numerous A-frame jack sidewind models, I decided to purchase the Bulldog A-frame sidewind model with a rating of 5000 lbs and a 15" lift. I also purchased the corresponding foot pad to help with the distribution of weight. The installation was straightforward and simple and so far, I have not experienced any functional issues with the jack. For anyone searching for and in need of a high quality and capable A-frame sidewind trailer jack, I would highly recommend this particular model.

After a year and numerous off-grid camping trips later, the Bulldog A-frame sidewind model is still performing strong. In fact, on one outing, the jack had slipped off a leveling block that I had not properly centered and fell to the ground onto the foot pad. I actually feared that the weight of the trailer would cause the gears to strip and fail but much to my surprise, that did not happen. To me, that is a testament of a well built and high quality product, one that I would still highly recommend to anyone who is considering replacing their stock A-frame jack sidewind model. Additionally, I would also give props to e-trailer for the positive purchase experience I had. Their staff and product reviews are the best in the business.

I purchased this to replace a trailer jack that had broken when I was packing up to leave my campsite. I had to ask the campground's maintenance dept to help jack my trailer up and onto my pickup so I needed a replacement jack quick in order to continue to tow the trailer on our next trip. I was happy to find what I needed at etrailer. The gray color matched my trailer tongue and supported more than enough weight. I also needed a side handle as the top handle was in the way of my propane tanks. The install was quick and the jack works great so far. Highly recommend it!

by:

Stock trailer jack been hard to work for long time. Finally gave up. Scary fast delivery, bolt on in minutes. Works great. No more fighting that damn jack.

perfect holding up nicely. i have a lot of weight in my trailer and the jack still performs like day one

by:

Both parts arrived in a very well done package. After years of fighting with the old jack it is nice to finally have one that works great. The caster wheel works for alignment when no spotter is available. Close, but no cigar sometimes can be a pain. Now I can push the trailer to attach the ball when it is off a little bit.

by:

Replaced failed problematic electric jack. Installation took 20 minutes. Jack works great as advertised. I expect it to outlast my trailer and truck and even me.

by:

Great working jack. I change out my original jack because of a clearance issue and went to the bull dog front crankIng jack instead of the top cranking jack.

by:

This is a great jack I put it on my 14' enclosed construction trailer. The jack bolted right on and I have had no issues. I will always use Etrailer.com in the future.
Their customer service department is very helpful.

by:

This jack is supposed to lift 5000 pounds. My tongue weight is about 500 lbs. It barely gets it off the ball. The gears are clicky(rough) and the handle is too short to get any leverage. The original Atwood worked much better, it had a longer handle and the gears were smoother. I need a sidewinder and couldn't find the Atwood to replace it.

by:

I have always like the bulldog products. I installed this on my neighbors trailer. It looks good and it works great. I noticed when I was installing it the metal that the old jack was mounted to was bent. I have a car hauler trailer and it is bent also. The metal that these jacks mounts to is light weight. I installed a 1/2 inch plate on top to fit the shape of the tongue. Welded everything in place. Metal will not bend anymore. The jack works fantastic and the neighbor is very happy with it and is glad we went with the handle on the side = instead on top. As always etrailer was fantastic to work with. Nobody can go wrong with etrailer.

It has worked good so far. Nothing to complain about.

by:

This product performs great. Easy to use and easy to install. I had a battery jack lift and the gearing started to fail and after several attempts to fix it I replaced it. I looked for a through tongue jack lift that would be mighty enough for my work trailer. This jack met the statistics and has performed beautifully. One suggestion I would add though if the manufacturer could include new bolts, nuts and washers to mount the jack. I struggled a little to get the old bolts out without breaking them. I got them out and reused them, but it would've been nice to have it all shinny and nice.

Hi there, thanks for reaching out to me. The trailer jack is still working great. It is still easy to lift the tongue of my 16 enclosed trailer with the crank handle. Still a great purchase..

by:

Simple installation, just what I was looking for.

by:

The service and help at etrailer has been awesome! The Jack is replacing one that is slightly lighter but this one is a sidewinder vs the one I had, which was a top wind. The equipment seems heavy duty and sturdy. When sliding it through the trailer tongue, though, it needed to be tapped a bit to get it through the lower hole. And I agree with my salesman, that the 5000 lb jack is very light to use and turn. I might have to add pics at a later time.

It is great. It solved the problem of installing a bike rack and rotating in front.

by:

Replaced the 1500 factory supplied A-Frame jack because it would not lift my trailer ant TV when easing tension on the weight distribution hitch (Blue Ox Track Pro). Plentiy of leverage to lift heavy weights, and the jack is very solid. Hills, extended heights...all no problems. BTW, I tow a 4500 lb Airstream with 550 lbs of tongue weight.

by:

Better than the one that came on a brand new flag staff Mac. it lasted two camping trips before I bought yours. Bull dog is still going strong no problems

Its working flawlessly. Its the jack they need to put on the camper to begin with. The cost was 25.00 more than the one i through away.

Awesome looking jack, replaced the one that was on our travel trailer. Got tired of busting my hand with that top handle jack. Installed in about ten minutes. Will also like the idea that it has 2000 more pounds of capacity. Very easy to operate nothing like the old one. Ordered on Monday and got it on Wednesday.

This 5000 pound trailer jack is just what the doctor ordered for my boat trailer. The old jack that the trailer came with was getting very hard to turn. This jack is about 3000 pounds beyond what is required for getting the trailer up and off the ball. It is very easy to turn the handle and with the 3 inch triangle bolt pattern it matched the trailer bolt pattern. Excellent product.

Perfect

by:

Product and shipping were as promised with on time delivery, I liked the sidewinde jack as have less problems and do not get moisture (causing rust problems) as with last two jacks I had too replace after 3 years on two trailers I bought new. The jack was easy to replace (about 20 minutes).

Todd H.

7/30/2021

it has worked out quite well with no problems

by:

As received, the jack handle is toward the tow vehicle when mounted. This seemed backwards to me so I disassembled the jack to change the position of the handle to the rear. I found metal shavings in the grease on the inside surface of the inner tube and a very rough surface on the screw threads. I had to remove the screw from the tube nut to clean it and then clean inner surface of the tube. With new grease, the jack now operates smoothly but I have to believe that the jack would have been damaged if I had not discovered the shavings and corrected the problem.

Mike , it looks like this will mount on three different directions. are the three holes not the same distance apart?

Etrailer Expert

Patrick B.

5/19/2014

The holes are the same distance apart, but the jack tubes are not centered on the plate. An a-frame jack will only fit into the mount on the trailer one way. On this jack, Bulldog part # BD1700100317, the handle will typically face forward. In rare cases, the trailer builder will orient the mounting plate differently.

by:

Extremely solid jack. I'm replacing a problematic electric jack that only seems to work at home. This may require a little more 'elbow grease' than holding a toggle switch, but will relieve the aggravation of the electric jack failing every time I get more than 10 miles from home.

Mike

Still going strong!

by:

We've had our Bulldog for a year now and it's worked flawlessly. It works as described. While I could have gone with an electric model, I've always had a distrust of my battery having a charge when I need it to, so having the hand-crank model has been superb. The design is simple and practical and the installation was very easy, took like 30 minutes - including the time to take the old jack off. I'd buy it again if I had another trailer needing a hitch jack.

by:

great product. i bought two of them because of the "side" cranking option. as top cranking caused me to hit my hand against the trailer tounge box . THE ONLY THING I WOULD DO WITH THAT PRODUCT IS TO INSTALL A GREASE ZERT IN THE TOP OF GEAR BOX,TO PERMITT GREASING. AS I INSTALLED ONE IN EACH ONE OF MY BULL DOG TRAILER JACKS. OH, ANOTHER NOTABLE THING ABOUT THIS TRAILER JACK IS,THAT THEY ARE ALOT EASYIER TO CRANK UP AND DOWN...

by:

Great product. Bought a older enclosed trailer that had a jack with a crank on top. The old jack was very tired. I moved the spare tire to the front of the trailer outside, form its original location on the inside front wall, (which made little sense to me). With the tire on the outside the position of the jack and the crank handle rotation became more of an issue. The front crank solves that issue, and I feel it is a more natural cranking motion.

by:

The jack was in the same box as the baseplate and the wheel, which were not wrapped in any thing and the paint on the jack is terribly marred. There was enough padding in the box but the lazy shipper did not wrap either of the two separate pieces, or event the barrel of the jacK!.

installed this product myself on the horse trailer, in my opinion the side crank jacks seem to be easier to work with but both of my side crank jacks are also a step above their replacement in weight rating. good product worth getting if you need/want a replacement for an equal or lighter weight jack
