How to Determine the Lift Capacity You Need in a Jack

A trailer jack is designed to lift the tongue of your trailer so you can connect the trailer coupler to your hitch ball. To do this, you'll need a jack with a lift capacity high enough to handle your trailer's tongue weight.

Tongue weight is the amount of weight that your trailer applies to the back of your tow vehicle. Typically, your tongue weight should be 10-15% of your total trailer weight (trailer + cargo). In other words, a 10,000-lb trailer would have a tongue weight between 1,000 lbs and 1,500 lbs. For a trailer this size, you would need a jack with a lift capacity of at least 1,500 lbs.

It's okay to have a jack with a weight rating that is higher than your trailer's tongue weight. In fact, a jack with a higher lift capacity should operate more efficiently, allowing you to spend less time cranking and more time camping.

Trailer and Camper Jack Lift

Every jack offers a certain amount of lift or travel. Screw travel is the distance the jack extends when you crank it (or toggle it to "extend" on an electric model). Some jacks include a drop leg for extra adjustability. On these jacks, you'll see the maximum extension of the drop leg listed in the specs as well. Adding the screw travel and drop leg travel together will give you the total lift. The total lift listed above can help you determine how high this jack will be able to raise your trailer.

Bulldog A-Frame Round Jack - Sidewind - 15" Lift - Zinc - 5,000 lbs - BD1700100301

Average Customer Rating:  4.8 out of 5 stars   (421 Customer Reviews)

Ideal for multiple agricultural and commercial applications, this standard A-frame jack features a 8-5/8" retracted height and measures 14-3/4" from the mounting bracket to the top, excluding the handle. Base sold separately.

I only have a 14 inch tongue short tongue on my cargo trailer this is the only jacket would work for me boulders right on easy to use works perfect thank you

Drop leg does not fit into jack did a lot of filing and grinding can get it to go in now if I beat it in with a hammer and beat it out with a hammer, kinda pointless, back to using wood to block it up what a waste of money

I recommend using a detachable foot plate like part # BD018564
Bulldog Detachable Footplate for 2" Jack Tube - 2,000 lbs to 5,000 lbs
with this jack. The shorter foot plate will slide in easier than part # BD500377

Quality jack. I purchased to relocate jack back on the tongue of the trailer because old jack would be hit by the tailgate. This jack is higher capacity, easier to crank and worked perfectly to eliminate tailgate dents.

Direct replacement for the jack that was on my trailer. Excellent quality.

Great product and Etrailer was great to do business with! Bolted on with a ease

I needed a front sidewind jack because I'm installing a cargo box on my trailer tongue. I live in the Denton, TX area and the product arrived in two days which was quicker than I expected. The product itself is exactly as described and is sturdier built than the jack it replaces. I installed this during a commercial break of a "Judge Judy" episode on a Big Tex 70PI trailer and it fit perfectly. It was that quick and simple. I re-used the foot plate from the old jack.

This is the second jack that we bought from etrailer. The shipping was fast, with in one day of ordering, and it bolted right on. The order process was super simple because the etrailer's website had all the information on it to be able to find the right jack for our needs. I did have a question so I used the live chat feature and with in seconds I had my answer. I wish every website was as easy to order form as etrailer's.

it fit perfectly, and the design also allowed me to reverse the crank to the rear of the jack. This eliminated the risk of hitting the tailgate on it!

Great jack, easy up and down and love the side winder.

Just rec'd the tongue jack I ordered. It is exactly what I wanted. As with all of my previous orders, I am very pleased with my shopping experience with etrailer. I will be back for future trailer needs and supplies, thank you.

Very heavy duty and well built jack. I installed this to accommodate close clearances to a toolbox, and couldn't use the existing topwind jack. Very smooth motion, even under load.

I love this design. The installation went great until I tried to attach the foot to the end of the stem. The stem would not fit into the foot. So I am waiting for a new foot to match this jack. :( The bolt holes lined up perfectly with the threaded holes in the trailer tongue. The only other features I would like to see for this product would be a waterproof cover to place over the top of it to keep water out of it and a grease fitting to lubricate the gears.

Item works very well. Shipping was on time. Overall pleased with my purchase

Install went nice and easy. Used grade 8 bolts, satin black paint. Raises and lowers the tongue on our A frame camper with ease.

Quick to put in place. Love the extra few inches it rises the hitch

The handle where it is placed is difficult to use. Wouldn’t buy it again.

Brought the bulldog jack to replace the one on my boat trailer.
Great product, easy to install, and operates smooth and easy
Highly recommend for any large trailer!

So far so good camping season is coming up we will see how it does it’s heavy duty for sure and seems like it will do just fine

great jack. easy to install AND LOOKS GOOD TOO.

Heavy duty well worth the money.

Free 2 day delivery and your setup for tracking is excellent. Truely a customer oriented company. Any other trailer needs I will go to Etrailer first.

Great product delivered promptly!

Had to replace the junk that came with the trailer. Stripped after only a few times. (Jayco garbage. I’ll never buy another Jayco trailer.)
Did the diligence and selected the Bulldog as a replacement!
And I could not be happier I did! Easily and quickly changed out and it’s almost an effortless crank. Great purchase!

Unlike the original jack that came with my boat and trailer this jack has the strength and gearing to effortlessly raise the trailer tong off my hitch.

Jack is still as strong as the day I bought it.
Lon W - 03/22/2021

Bought this jack to replace the recalled Lippert smart jack on my 2018 Lance RV. I didn't have a dealer to perform the recall work near me and don't need the electric jack. If you haven't replaced your faulty Lippert, consider doing so. Mine did get wet and it fully extended as it shorted out while parked. Would hate to see that happen to someone driving down the road in the rain!
This jack fit perfectly and it took about 5 minutes to swap them out. Great service and delivery by etrailer as well.

The Bulldog jack part # BD1700100301 has a 5,000 lb capacity. I prefer the sidewind styles of jacks as I found them to be easier to crank than the top wind jacks. So for your application the # BD1700100301 would easily be a great fit. Since the capacity is much more than you'd need the crank would be incredibly easy to operate. All A-frame mounted jacks like the Bulldog A-Frame Round Jack # BD1700100301 use the same 3-inch mounting hole bolt pattern. • Difference Between Bulldog Powder Coated and Zinc Finish 5,000 Pound A-Frame Trailer Jacks

The Bulldog A-Frame Trailer Jack # BD155032 is a topwind jack and the part # BD1700100301 is a sidewind jack. Both of them are solid choices and have 5,000 lb capacities but the handles and how they are cranked are opposite of each other. The topwind jack spins horizontally when you raise or lower it and a sidewind cranks vertically. Sometimes clearances or interference with other accessories on the trailer may cause one style to be more advantageous than the other.
