How to Determine the Lift Capacity You Need in a Jack

A trailer jack is designed to lift the tongue of your trailer so you can connect the trailer coupler to your hitch ball. To do this, you'll need a jack with a lift capacity high enough to handle your trailer's tongue weight.

Tongue weight is the amount of weight that your trailer applies to the back of your tow vehicle. Typically, your tongue weight should be 10-15% of your total trailer weight (trailer + cargo). In other words, a 10,000-lb trailer would have a tongue weight between 1,000 lbs and 1,500 lbs. For a trailer this size, you would need a jack with a lift capacity of at least 1,500 lbs.

It's okay to have a jack with a weight rating that is higher than your trailer's tongue weight. In fact, a jack with a higher lift capacity should operate more efficiently, allowing you to spend less time cranking and more time camping.

Trailer and Camper Jack Lift

Every jack offers a certain amount of lift or travel. Screw travel is the distance the jack extends when you crank it (or toggle it to "extend" on an electric model). Some jacks include a drop leg for extra adjustability. On these jacks, you'll see the maximum extension of the drop leg listed in the specs as well. Adding the screw travel and drop leg travel together will give you the total lift. The total lift listed above can help you determine how high this jack will be able to raise your trailer.

Video Transcript for Bulldog Round, A-Frame Jack: The Breakdown

Today we're going to be taking a look at the Bulldog Round, A-Frame Trailer Jack, with the external gearbox. This is a side wind design, offering 13 inches of lift and a 3,000 pound capacity. Its part number is BD1550100317. As you can see, with this Bulldog Jack, we're going to have the housing right up here on the top; this is going to be our external gearbox. This makes it very accessible if we ever need to take care of it down the road, this is going to make it ideal for the agricultural or commercial use where we might have several jacks of this type around. We've got a long crank handle. It's the rod style or the kind that's round and solid rather than being a bent form piece of metal, so that's going to be very strong.

Then there's a larger than average knob here on the end, fills up the hand nicely and it's going to give us good crank power going both directions. With our jack in its fully extended position, we're going to have bracket height of about 20 and 1/4 inches; that's going to be the mounting surface or where we mounted the jack. To the top of the gearbox, it's going to be about 14 and a 1/2 and then to the very top of our handle, about 20 and 3/4, so just keep those measurements in mind. Now the handle from the center of our jack to its outside edges, right at about 6 inches, right to the end there. Just to give you an idea of the kind of clearance that you're going to need as you're moving this around and the kind of coverages that you're going to need. Now they've left the outer tube and the inner tube with a gray paint finish. Like we've bolted it on today, we could easily take our paint to it and get a good finish on it or if you weld it on you'll be able to paint over that.

If you like to paint it to match your trailer, it's going to be an easily convertible finish, but a sturdy and durable finish if we don't want to touch it. Now our outer tube diameter is 2 and a 1/4 inches and our internal tube, this is going to be 2 inches to the outside edges on both of those. That's going to allow us to mount any of our 2 and a 1/4 inch holes. The 2 inch tube, as you can see, is going to have the groove that runs through it to prevent it from turning while we're going up and down. It also has hole, it goes full through to allow us to attach any accessory that we might want. Now the accessories are sold separately, so check out our website for those.

Now with our jack in its lowest position, we're going to have about a 7 inch brace or bracket height or mounting level there. This is going to make it ideal for a lot of those very low clearance situations where you might need this style of jack. With the existing jack removed we can see the opening we're going to need here. This is going to be 2 and 1/4 inches from the edge to the edge. Our bolt spacing should be around 3 inches, from the center of one hole to the center of the other hole. Then it's just a matter of sliding our jack right down and in and just kind of rotate it until all three of our holes line up properly.

Then we'll use our existing hardware to secure it in place. Now, if your hardware isn't up to snuff, you will need some more . You need a grade 5, a minimum of a 3/8ths inch bolt. Then in the instructions you'll find the torque specs that you'll want to run those down to. Then we'll torque them to the right spec. Now we can lower our jack down and pick up our tongue on the trailer. With everything tighten and our jack working as it should, that's going to complete today's look at the Bulldog A-Frame Trailer Jack, part number is BD1550100317. .

  • Recommended Replacement Coupler for a Bulldog
We unfortunately do not have the coupler repair kit you're looking for because it's been discontinued. I'd recommend just replacing the entire jack with a new one like the Bulldog Round, A-Frame Jack # BD1550100317. This is a sidewind jack that has a 3,000 lb capacity, 13" of lift, and can be bolted or welded on.
