How to Determine the Lift Capacity You Need in a Jack

A trailer jack is designed to lift the tongue of your trailer so you can connect the trailer coupler to your hitch ball. To do this, you'll need a jack with a lift capacity high enough to handle your trailer's tongue weight.

Tongue weight is the amount of weight that your trailer applies to the back of your tow vehicle. Typically, your tongue weight should be 10-15% of your total trailer weight (trailer + cargo). In other words, a 10,000-lb trailer would have a tongue weight between 1,000 lbs and 1,500 lbs. For a trailer this size, you would need a jack with a lift capacity of at least 1,500 lbs.

It's okay to have a jack with a weight rating that is higher than your trailer's tongue weight. In fact, a jack with a higher lift capacity should operate more efficiently, allowing you to spend less time cranking and more time camping.

Trailer and Camper Jack Lift

Every jack offers a certain amount of lift or travel. Screw travel is the distance the jack extends when you crank it (or toggle it to "extend" on an electric model). Some jacks include a drop leg for extra adjustability. On these jacks, you'll see the maximum extension of the drop leg listed in the specs as well. Adding the screw travel and drop leg travel together will give you the total lift. The total lift listed above can help you determine how high this jack will be able to raise your trailer.

I've had this on my camper for a year now and it has served me well. Still works as it should. Easy to crank up and down. I would recommend this product if you're looking to replace yours.

by:

I like the handle position and the fact that I can put an adjustable foot on it, and the load limit on it

by:

A great product. It was a replacement for a jack that came OEM on my very high quality Owens & Sons Aluminum Slide-On trailer. If those guys picked Bulldog then I'm picking Bulldog. The original lasted about 7 years, and I've had this one over a year with zero issues. Install was very easy.

by:

Great jack, I previously had a 2000lb capacity jack for my 3500lb GVW trailer and it didn't have enough strength to smoothly lift the trailer every time. This 3000lb jack does the job.
Thanks

Comments
Jack is still working properly, but has significant grease or oil leaking from the gearbox and dirt is accumulating on the top of the jack.

Fast delivery. Nice jack. Took less than 5 minutes to remove the old jack and install the Bulldog.

by:

I am very pleased with this trailer jack. Initially, i was worried that it would not provide the proper ground clearence that I required because of how low my trailer is.
Etrailer has a wealth of information, all the way down to measurments when the jack is in the full up position. Installed without a hitch, no pun intended.

This jack is great for those extra low trailers and is very well constructed.

by:

Replaced my broken jack on my open car hauler. It is holding up strong a year later. I'll be honest that I'm bad about oiling these things and they sit out in the sun and rain. My old one seized up with that. This one so far is still easy to use and appears to be holding up well.

by:

I bought this to replace a damaged jack on my small camper. I was looking for a jack with a shorter retracted extension since my camper sets low. This worked perfectly. The quality is outstanding.

by:

I was disappointed that the jack says Made in Mexico when the website says Made in USA.

I have only used it once so far, but it works good and has more ground clearance than my old one.

Comments
It was previously made in the US but we did not know the production change had happened. The site will be corrected shortly.

Great replacement. It took me about 5 minutes to change. I also got the drop leg . What a difference it makes. I will shop here again soon. It got a 4 star only because I don't believe in 5 stars. Nothing is perfect but this came close. Thanks for making it easy to shop and replace my broken jack with a real up grade to my 20 yr. old trailer. Pappy <><

by:

This BullDog tongue jack is a simple, strong and well-made replacement for heavier applications such with our 7000lb horse trailer.

by:

Nice replacement for an old jack

by:

Nice jack, fast delivery and I am completely satisified. Installed it on my enclosed cargo trailer & it works as expected. Will order from etrailer again.

by:

The tounge jack is also perfect! I am very happy

by:

ordered for a restoration of older camper worked as expected

by:

For the money, it serves its purpose well. It's a jack. As long as it goes up and down smoothly and does not collapse, it's all good.

by:

The gearing is very smooth and I was able to swap the handle to the inside of the tongue.

by:

Easy install works as it should

by:

So far working very well. Much easier than my top turn jack. Easy install taking approximately 2 minutes.

by:

good fit and worked good.

Arrived on time In a box did not look u sed

  • Dimension of Bulldog A-Frame Jack From Bracket to Bottom of Tube
When the Bulldog Round, A-Frame Jack # BD1550100317 is retracted the measurement from the mounting bracket to the bottom of the tube is 7". I have made a photo for you to check out which shows this measurement.

  • Replacement Bulldog Jack # BD1550100317 for Jack On Trailer with Damaged Threads
You definitely do have a damaged screw and nut in your Bulldog jack # BD1550100317 based on what you described. Since those parts aren't available you'll have to replace the jack entirely or possibly just swap the internals from the new to the old. What happened is that you over-extended your trailer jack which is what ruined the threads of the jack.

  • Difference Between Bulldog Jacks # BD1550100317 and BD1550101344
The only difference is the finish of the two jacks. If I were you I would go with the galvanized part # BD1550101344 as it will fight corrosion better than the painted version. Most likely it's an issue of that we sell more of the galvanized version, therefore we have larger orders of the jack so the price is a bit better.

  • What Is The Measurement From The Mounting Bracket To Bottom Of Jack On Bulldog BD1700100317?
I would be happy to help, but I do not have a measurement showing how far below the hitch ball the jack will be when fully retracted due to there being a wide variety of couplers that have the ball at a different height on the trailer. Instead trailer jacks are measured from the bottom of the mounting flange to the bottom of the jack. In the case of the Bulldog Round, A-Frame Jack # BD1700100317 you were looking at this measurement is 8-5/8" as shown in the included diagram. You can use...

  • Replacement Sidewind Jack for 23 Foot Boat Trailer with Shelby A-Frame Jack
Trailer jacks only have to lift the tongue weight of a trailer. So your trailer weighing about 4,000 lbs would only have about 400 lbs of tongue weight which the Bulldog jack part # BD1550100317 that you referenced would easily take care of. This matches the style of jack you need and fits the standard a-frame bracket your trailer has so it will fit and work really well. To add a wheel to this jack like what you have now you'll just need the part # BDCP555.

  • Recommended Jack For 1998 Rockwood Popup Camper
From the specs and photos I was able to see for a 1998 Rockwood popup camper it looks like you have an a-frame jack on the trailer. I have attached a link to the a-frame jacks we offer you can check out. If you are looking for a sidewind jack I recommend a jack like the Bulldog Round, A-Frame Jack, part # BD1550100317. This has a 3,000-lb capacity and features a 13-inch lift. If you want a footplate for the jack I recommend part # BD018564 and if you want a caster for the jack you can...

  • Recommended Drop Leg For A 3,000 to 5,000 Pound Bulldog Trailer Jack
If you are looking to maximize the capacity of either the Bulldog 3,000 pound jack # BD1550100317 or the 5,000 pound # BD1700100317, you are not limited to the 2,000 pound rated # BD500377 drop leg. With that said, you will want to check out the etrailer.com # JF-1005H-Z drop leg. This is rated up to 5,000 pounds and technically is designed for use in etrailer.com and Ram jacks, but we have found it to fit the Bulldog jacks very nicely as well. • Jack With Short Retracted Height for Horse Trailer
The # TJA-5000-B jack has a 10-3/8" retracted height without a footplate so for a 5,000 lb jack with less retracted height, a great option is the Rack'em B-52 Round A-Frame Trailer Jack # RA-29. This jack has just an 8-1/2" retracted height and if you add the Bulldog Detachable Footplate # BD018564 you will be adding less than half an inch to that. If you needed even less height you would need to get a jack that does not have as much lift capacity. The lift capacity only needs to support...

  • Round A-Frame Trailer Jack for 14,000 lb Trailer
We can definitely help you out here, but let's start with the coupler. You mentioned Bulldog Heavy-Duty Cast Head Coupler with Wedge Latch # BD44150WQ317 but that you had a round jack on your trailer. This coupler has a hole for a square jack so instead, I recommend the Bulldog Heavy-Duty Cast Head Coupler with Wedge Latch # BD44150W0317. This is the same coupler but has a round hole for a round jack. Then for the jack, the great thing is that for an A-frame jack, its capacity only needs...

  • Drop-Leg A-Frame Jack for 4500-lb Travel Trailer
The 2500-lb-rated Square Jack # MJSQ-2500B certainly has enough capacity to lift the 600-lb tongue weight (TW) of a 4500-lb travel trailer although this particular jack is primarily intended for marine trailer applications. This jack's included bracket mounts to the side of a trailer frame that measures up to 3-inches wide and between 2- and 5-inches tall. Since your travel trailer is an a-frame you might consider a comparably-rated a-frame jack like the 3000-lb-rated Bulldog # BD1550100317...

  • Recommended Trailer Jack Options For 1993 Jayco Eagle Camper
For your 1993 Jayco Eagle camper weighing 6800 lbs, I am not sure if you need an A-frame tongue jack for a travel trailer, replacement landing gear for a 5th wheel, or stabilizer jacks. The side jack makes me think 5th wheel or stabilizer jack but I will give all recommendations. If your 1993 Jayco Eagle is a 5th wheel trailer, I recommend the Stromberg Carlson Electric Landing Gear Set - Weld On - 34-7/8" Lift - 5,500 lbs # LG-1. This landing gear has a leg length of 29-1/2 inches with...
