How to Determine the Lift Capacity You Need in a Jack

A trailer jack is designed to lift the tongue of your trailer so you can connect the trailer coupler to your hitch ball. To do this, you'll need a jack with a lift capacity high enough to handle your trailer's tongue weight.

Tongue weight is the amount of weight that your trailer applies to the back of your tow vehicle. Typically, your tongue weight should be 10-15% of your total trailer weight (trailer + cargo). In other words, a 10,000-lb trailer would have a tongue weight between 1,000 lbs and 1,500 lbs. For a trailer this size, you would need a jack with a lift capacity of at least 1,500 lbs.

It's okay to have a jack with a weight rating that is higher than your trailer's tongue weight. In fact, a jack with a higher lift capacity should operate more efficiently, allowing you to spend less time cranking and more time camping.

Trailer and Camper Jack Lift

Every jack offers a certain amount of lift or travel. Screw travel is the distance the jack extends when you crank it (or toggle it to "extend" on an electric model). Some jacks include a drop leg for extra adjustability. On these jacks, you'll see the maximum extension of the drop leg listed in the specs as well. Adding the screw travel and drop leg travel together will give you the total lift. The total lift listed above can help you determine how high this jack will be able to raise your trailer.

Video Transcript for Bulldog Trailer Jack - A-Frame Jack - BD1550100317 Review

Today we'll be reviewing part number BD1550100317. This is the Bulldog Round A-Frame Jack with the sidewind handle. It's going to provide 13 inches of lift, and it's rated at 3,000 pounds. This dependable jack is recognized as industry standard for agricultural and commercial applications. It's also ASABE compliant. It has precision-fitted parts that are going to help provide exceptional stability and reliability. You have a couple of different options when it comes to mounting this onto your trailer.

You can choose to weld this onto your trailer, or you can choose to use the bolt hole pattern to bolt this onto any standard A-frame coupler. Just keep in mind that the hardware is not included. The outer and the inner tubes have a nice, weather-resistant gray paint finish, which is going to help it stand up nicely against the elements. The sidewind handle has a smooth, ergonomic design for easy cranking, and it's going to provide a handle radius of 5 13/16ths of an inch. The outer tube has a diameter of 2 1/4 inches and the inner tube has a diameter of right at 2 inches. A couple accessories that I want to show you that are available from etrailer.com, but they are sold separately. The first one is the Caster Wheel Assembly.

This is available with part number BD500245. Your jack simply goes into the caster wheel. You line up your pin holes, and install the safety pin to secure it in place. This is really going to help increase the mobility. The other accessory that I would like to show you is our Footplate. This is available with part number BD018564, and it installs the same way as the Caster Wheel Assembly. When the jack is fully retracted, we're going to have a bracket height of 7 inches.

That's measuring from the base of the inner tube to our mounting location, or mounting bracket. When it's fully extended, that measurement increases to 20 inches. If we subtract those two measurements, we're left with 13 inches, which is where we get our lift measurement from. The clearance that we have from the mounting bracket to the top of the jack is going to measure 14 1/2 inches. This jack is rated with a lift capacity of 3,000 pounds. You can see here on this triangular design of our mounting bracket that one of our points actually has a flat edge, and the other two have a nice point.

The measurement on the side without the flat edge, from point to point, measures 4 3/4 inches. Measuring on the sides that does have the flat edge, or comes into contact with the flat edge, from point to point, is going to measure 4 1/4 inch. You can see that our bolt holes are elongated. From center to center, they're going to measure 3 1/4 inches. And our bolt hole is going to measure 3/4 inches long by a half inch wide. That's going to complete today's review of part number BD1550100317. And that's the Bulldog Round A-Frame Jack, rated at 3,000 pounds. .

Great jack, I previously had a 2000lb capacity jack for my 3500lb GVW trailer and it didn't have enough strength to smoothly lift the trailer every time. This 3000lb jack does the job.
Thanks

Jack is still working properly, but has significant grease or oil leaking from the gearbox and dirt is accumulating on the top of the jack.

I am very pleased with this trailer jack. Initially, i was worried that it would not provide the proper ground clearence that I required because of how low my trailer is.
Etrailer has a wealth of information, all the way down to measurments when the jack is in the full up position. Installed without a hitch, no pun intended.

This jack is great for those extra low trailers and is very well constructed.

A great product. It was a replacement for a jack that came OEM on my very high quality Owens & Sons Aluminum Slide-On trailer. If those guys picked Bulldog then I'm picking Bulldog. The original lasted about 7 years, and I've had this one over a year with zero issues. Install was very easy.

by:

I bought this to replace a damaged jack on my small camper. I was looking for a jack with a shorter retracted extension since my camper sets low. This worked perfectly. The quality is outstanding.

by:

I was disappointed that the jack says Made in Mexico when the website says Made in USA.

I have only used it once so far, but it works good and has more ground clearance than my old one.

It was previously made in the US but we did not know the production change had happened. The site will be corrected shortly.

by:

I've had this on my camper for a year now and it has served me well. Still works as it should. Easy to crank up and down. I would recommend this product if you're looking to replace yours.

by:

This BullDog tongue jack is a simple, strong and well-made replacement for heavier applications such with our 7000lb horse trailer.

by:

Great replacement. It took me about 5 minutes to change. I also got the drop leg . What a difference it makes. I will shop here again soon. It got a 4 star only because I don't believe in 5 stars. Nothing is perfect but this came close. Thanks for making it easy to shop and replace my broken jack with a real up grade to my 20 yr. old trailer. Pappy <><

by:

Nice jack, fast delivery and I am completely satisified. Installed it on my enclosed cargo trailer & it works as expected. Will order from etrailer again.

by:

Replaced my broken jack on my open car hauler. It is holding up strong a year later. I'll be honest that I'm bad about oiling these things and they sit out in the sun and rain. My old one seized up with that. This one so far is still easy to use and appears to be holding up well.

by:

I like the handle position and the fact that I can put an adjustable foot on it, and the load limit on it

by:

For the money, it serves its purpose well. It's a jack. As long as it goes up and down smoothly and does not collapse, it's all good.

by:

The tounge jack is also perfect! I am very happy

by:

The gearing is very smooth and I was able to swap the handle to the inside of the tongue.

by:

Fast delivery. Nice jack. Took less than 5 minutes to remove the old jack and install the Bulldog.

by:

So far working very well. Much easier than my top turn jack. Easy install taking approximately 2 minutes.

by:

Nice replacement for an old jack

by:

ordered for a restoration of older camper worked as expected

by:

Easy install works as it should

by:

good fit and worked good.

  • Replacement Jack # TJA-5000S-B for Jack On Trailer with Damaged Threads
You definitely do have a damaged screw and nut in your Bulldog jack # BD1550100317 based on what you described. Since those parts aren't available you'll have to replace the jack entirely or possibly just swap the internals from the new to the old. What happened is that you over-extended your trailer jack which is what ruined the threads of the jack. For a replacement, I recommend the Round A-Frame Trailer Jack - Sidewind - 15-5/8" Travel - 5,000 lbs # TJA-5000S-B.

  • Replacement Sidewind Jack for 23 Foot Boat Trailer with Shelby A-Frame Jack
Trailer jacks only have to lift the tongue weight of a trailer. So, your trailer weighing about 4,000 lbs would only have about 400 lbs of tongue weight which the etrailer jack part # TJA-5000S-B that you referenced would easily take care of. This matches the style of jack you need and fits the standard a-frame bracket your trailer has so it will fit and work really well. The 5,000 lb capacity is more than enough and will ensure easy use and little wear on the jack. To add a wheel to...
