How to Determine the Lift Capacity You Need in a Jack

A trailer jack is designed to lift the tongue of your trailer so you can connect the trailer coupler to your hitch ball. To do this, you'll need a jack with a lift capacity high enough to handle your trailer's tongue weight.

Tongue weight is the amount of weight that your trailer applies to the back of your tow vehicle. Typically, your tongue weight should be 10-15% of your total trailer weight (trailer + cargo). In other words, a 10,000-lb trailer would have a tongue weight between 1,000 lbs and 1,500 lbs. For a trailer this size, you would need a jack with a lift capacity of at least 1,500 lbs.

It's okay to have a jack with a weight rating that is higher than your trailer's tongue weight. In fact, a jack with a higher lift capacity should operate more efficiently, allowing you to spend less time cranking and more time camping.

Trailer and Camper Jack Lift

Every jack offers a certain amount of lift or travel. Screw travel is the distance the jack extends when you crank it (or toggle it to "extend" on an electric model). Some jacks include a drop leg for extra adjustability. On these jacks, you'll see the maximum extension of the drop leg listed in the specs as well. Adding the screw travel and drop leg travel together will give you the total lift. The total lift listed above can help you determine how high this jack will be able to raise your trailer.

Boy was that easy!

I needed to
replace the tongue jack on my wife’s 2008 Trails West horse trailer. I went to the eTrailer website to see what was available. After looking at all the options, I simply measured the height of the existing tongue jack above and below the mounting bracket and ordered the Bulldog tongue jack with the same dimensions.

Replacing the original tongue jack took 5 minutes. I simply placed a jack stand under the front of the trailer, took the weight off the old tongue jack, 3 bolts off, the new jack in, and tightened the bolts.

This was by far the easiest repair I have ever done. Given the great eTrailer price, I didn’t even bother to attempt to repair the old jack.

Thanks for a great product, a great price, and great service! Attached is a picture of the newly-installed Bulldog tongue jack.

Had a trailer jack on my trailer that basically rusted out. Did my research as to a replacement and it seemed a Bulldog was the way to go. A store in my hometown had them but not the right size( extension length) I needed, however it allowed me to inspect it hands on and then ordered it from etrailer. Seemed to be very well built. My jack arrived a day earlier than expected and was shipped in a very heavy duty box so was not damaged at all. Jack works great and operates very smooth, better than my old one. Am very satisfied.

Working great! Would definitely buy another one if needed.

An excellent jack. This is the second one we purchased. The first was for our first horse trailer and this is for our second trailer. I seem to be really good at breaking jacks. These are super strong and better than the original factory installed jack. I have yet to break one of these. Bulldog jacks are well made, well greased and turn smoothly. You can find jacks that are a little cheaper, but the metal isn't as thick and/or they end up squeaking and become harder to turn. It isn't worth it. This is the one I look for and trust now.

Loved the ease of putting this jack back in my horse trailer. It only took 5 minutes, perfect. And I got it quicker than what they said it would take.

I ordered this jack as a replacement for a welded on unit for a 16' trailer refurbishment. The jack works great a year later.
Thank you etrailer.com for the excellent service and products.
I will keep coming back

Second bulldog jack that we have purchased from here. Love their durability and performance. Even after trailering newbies attempted to drive off with the jack down the bulldog did not bend or break.

by:

Both units worked perfect. Trailers used once a month 12 times a year and I'v had it for ten years. Got good use of the old unit. this replacement worked out perfect. let's see if I get ten year from this one.

by:

Installed theA-Frame jack topwind. No problems and fit my Haulmark trailer perfectly.

by:

This was a smooth operating and well built replacement for our 5x8 cargo trailer.

by:

Bulldog A Frame jack came early. After it arrived I installed the jack in a few minutes time. Great all around experience!

by:

This was an exact match to my existing trailer jack. I removed all the internal components and replaced the old ones with the new. Keep in mind this unit is a welded unit so complete removal of the old one is near impossible.

by:

Alot better than the jack that came on my trailer from the factory. I have made several puchases from etrailer and have yet to have any problems, top notch service and support

by:

I received my Bulldog Jack at a very fair price and quick delivery.

by:

Upgraded to a heavier duty jack for our enclosed trailer. Nice product and good value!

  • Is There an A-Frame Trailer Jack for a 2 Inch Opening
I have a few options for you but almost all a-frame trailer jacks has a 2-1/4" diameter outer tube. Therefore, in order to install an a-frame trailer jack like the Bulldog Round A-Frame Jack part # BD155022 which has a 2-1/4" diameter outer tube you will either need to simply open up the hole you have another 1/4" or replace the trailer coupler with one like the A-Frame Trailer Coupler part # CA-5210-B or part # CA-5400-B. Although not ideal because of instability issues, there is also...

  • Replacement Bulldog Model 1550220117 A-Frame Trailer Jack
I do have a solution for you, however there is not an inner pipe/tube replacement available that will fit your Bulldog A-Frame Trailer Jack. We do however have an exact replacement for your model 1550220117 Bulldog Jack with the Bulldog Round A-Frame Jack # BD155022. This 2,000 pound jack features a total lift of 15 inches and a retracted bracket height of 8-13/16 inches. It has an outer tube diameter of 2-1/4 inches. The pricing information will be listed on the product page. If you...

  • Replacement for a Bulldog TWL 155 X Trailer Jack
The 155 is a series of jacks and not just one jack. It sounds like you might have something more like # BD155022 which has more of the outer tube below the mounting flange. There is also a version with a zinc finish # BD155028.

  • Jack Support Plate to Use with Bulldog A-Frame Trailer Jack
The Bulldog Support Plate part # BDSPB50 would work great with the Bulldog Jack part # BD155022 you are planning on installing as does provide a large enough hole for the jack to fit through. To use this as a top plate will require some holes to be drilled in it.

  • Recommended Replacement Jack For A-Frame Trailer
A majority of the A-frame jacks we offer have a 2-1/4 inch diameter outer tube. Those remain fairly consistent for jacks that range from 750 lbs to 5000 lbs weight capacity. We currently do not offer any jacks with a 1-7/8 inch diameter outer tube. If you decide you would like to replace the attach plate you currently have and install a new jack I recommend part # BD003135 for the support plate that can either be welded or bolted to the trailer frame. The jack I recommend is the Bulldog...

  • Highest Rated Bulldog Jack Wheel for A-Frame Jack
The highest rated jack wheel we carry is # BD500245. It's a 6 inch wheel rated up to 1,200 pounds. It will fit the Bulldog A-Frame Jack # BD155022 that you mentioned. I've attached videos on both the jack and wheel for you.

  • Recommended A-Frame Trailer Jack For Trailer With 3-1/2 Jack Mounting Hole Spacing
I have another option for you, but the standard mounting hole spacing is 3" as you mentioned, and we do not offer a jack with mounting hole spacing of 3.5". Instead you will need to weld the jack to the tongue of your trailer. I recommend the Bulldog Round, A-Frame Jack - Topwind - 15" Lift - 2,000 lbs # BD155022 if your current jack is a topwind, or # BD155157 if your jack is sidewind. Both of these options have a 2000lb weight rating which will mean you will have an easier time raising...

  • Replacement A-Frame Jack for a Forest River Pop-Up Camper
All of the a-frame trailer jacks we offer have a 2-1/4" outer tube and a 2" inner tube diameter as that is the standard size. We do not have any a-frame trailer jacks with a 1.910" outer tube and a 1.625" inner tube diameter nor have I heard of an a-frame trailer jack with these dimensions before. However, if the jack hole on your trailer is not at least 2-1/4" diameter then you could easily use a hole saw and open it up to this which will then allow you to use a much more standard size...
