Rugged, Matte Black Finish

The sturdy steel construction is protected with a matte black finish for added durability. This unique powder coating gives etrailer hitches a carbide-like appearance and a rugged look that sets them apart from traditional glossy hitches. In addition to being rust and corrosion resistant, the tough matte coating hides dirt, scuffs, and dings better than a glossy finish.

Bought this hitch to use with a trailer mount bike rack. Was concerned with packaging as the box had several holes/tears due to product shifting during transport... could use better packaging. Fortunately there was no damage. Installation was not difficult but takes a bit more time than the video and instructions recommend. I have not used the hitch yet but overall it looks nice, and seems durable. Would probably give a 5* other than the fact i think they can improve on packaging. Also discrepancies in install video. 533787

The etrailer hitch was a snap to install on our 2012 Highlander. I had installed another brand on our 2008 Highlander and the drivers side panel was not aligned when it was welded (what a pain). In contrast, the etrailer model e98858, went it in perfectly. One person operation in a bout an hour. Was using it the next day to haul 4 bikes on our Hollywood SportRack 4 all purchased from etrailer. The receiver works great! The flat black powder coat finish looks amazing in person. Photo's on the website do not do it justice. Thanks again etrailer, you're the best and I will continue to recommend you! 621752

Holes didn't line up to well. After a few scraped knuckles and finally breaking out the porta-power I got done. Seems quite solid though. It will only be used to pull boat and small trailers. 659467

Comments

When a trailer hitch is constructed, softer steel is used in the side plates as opposed to the harder steel used in the crossbar and receiver tube. This allows the hitch to flex along with the vehicle to a certain degree. This flexibility can also allow the hitch to get slightly bent out of position during shipping and handling, which prevents the holes in the hitch mounting flange to not match up with the holes in the vehicles frame. The good news is that its very easy to fix this if you know a few tricks as shown in the linked article.

Good rugged trailer hitch. Had trouble getting 1 bolt in, otherwise installation was easy. I would recommend this accessory. 533362

Shipping was fast and the hitch appears to be heavy duty and durable. I have not installed it yet so i cannot comment on the fitment and ease of installation. My complain is about how etrailer packs and ships the hitch. It was literally inside a box without any form of padding or cusion to prevent it from flopping inside the box. I bet that alot of the complains from customers having issues with bent and scratched hitches is because of poor packaging. Dont expect UPS to baby this box because it is not their job plus its is very heavy. When i received the box, there were holes and tears all over becaue the hitch was flopping during transit. When i openned the hitch to do an inspection, sure enough i saw significant scratches and some damage to the finish especially on the flanges. The scratches on the main receiver tube is the one that upsets me as it is the one visible from the outside e once installed. Please etrailer, a good styro padding or cushion would have been very helpful. Im a little disappointed about the scratches, i ordered a brand new item, i expect it to look new. 579835

I installed this hitch on a 2010 Toyota Highlander. I was able to install it by myself in about 2 hours taking my time. I used a jack stand to hold up one side while starting the bolts on the other side. If you watch the Trailer Hitch Installation video you won't have any problem. The bolt holes lined up perfectly. Just make sure you start a bolt on one side and then alternate bolts on each side. Get them all started before tightening them. I had to trim the driver's side panel in order to put it back on. The passenger side went on without any trimming. I felt as this hitch was truly a custom fit for my vehicle. I would highly recommend this hitch! 531776

I bought the hitch and wiring for my 2008 Highlander Hybrid. The wiring was a little bit difficult because of the design of the vehicle -not the parts from etrailer. The connections were easy to find and the wiring worked perfectly. The only caveat is that the Highlander uses low profile mini-fuses and the ones that came with the kit were standard size (You have to insert a 10A fuse in the Highlander fuse box -it apparently isn't included by Toyota even if you have the tow package). It cost me $5.00 to get a packet of fuses so it was no big deal. The hitch went in flawlessly with what I would consider minimal effort. I was impressed by the quality of the hitch.Great product, great value. 530466

I had similar issues as most with pitch between the passenger side attachment points on the hitch frame and the drivers side attachment points- about 1" off. I used some 2x4's and a tire jack to spread the hitch assembly out (after lifting it up, fitting it up and confirming it would not install, and then dropping it back to the floor for "adjustment"). If your up for that, it's any easy install. If you are expecting to install out of the box without modification , it won't happen. A few jackstands and 2x4's are essential if you are installing by yourself. 532443

The hitch arrive in good time. Nice sturdy build quality. All mounting hardware was in the package. Harness adapter was easy to install. Only cons was the hitch had to be clamped in place to align the bolt holes. And the 10amp fuse that was supposed to be included was not in the harness box 609811

Great price and the hitch seems very solid. Instructions sent with unit are in B&W, which makes the cutout diagrams difficult to see. I found the pdf of the document online, and printed in color, and that helped. However, for my 2008 highlander, the panels underneath were a bit different than what was illustrated, so I did NOT need to cut anything on the passenger side panel. On the drivers side, the corner cut obvoiously needed to be modified (different shape than diagram). The slot cut (7x2.5) was not right, so I wound up cutting another inch or to along the 7" cut near the spare-tire side, and there was a big gap along the opposite 7" side. I wish I'd lined it up before cutting so they could have been more plastic left when done. 531647

Quick delivery. Box was banged up, but hitch and parts were fine. Install went well. I watched the video a couple times before starting the install on my 2013 Highlander. Only real gripe is the cutting of the plastic covers is not described well. The drivers side cover needs to be cut a lot more than what is described in the instructions and video. Later in the video, during the reinstall of the cover, you can see that more of the driver side cover is removed. Just look at the holes in the cover. AND I DID NOT HAVE TO CUT THE PASENGER SIDE COVER AT ALL, unlike what the video shows. It went back in no problem. Wiring install was pretty easy. Mostly thanks to Toyota pre-wiring plugs. Under dash install went well except the ground wire. The video shows removing a nut from one the steering column lugs. I tried that and the loop on the ground wire didn't fit over the lug. Using the provided self tapping screw worked after a couple tries. This is my second time installing an e-trailer hitch (Toyota Sienna first time) and I would order a 3rd if the need arises. 533698

This one took a while compared to other reviewers who said it was quick. Some thoughts:- This is heavy. Another person or jack stands are required.- I attached the passengers side first, which I now read might be a mistake. The first driver-side bolt lined up no problem, but I had to pry like crazy using the spare tire as leverage to get the other 2 driver side bolts lined up.- Getting the bolts on the factory tow hooks off was a bear as well, but not unmanageable. A 3/8" socket set can barely pull this feat off.- Cutting the passenger side shield is not required at all. The driver side shield needed a long slit toward the front of the truck and I cut the back edge to hook it around the hitch. Overall:This is a good price and a good hitch. It took me a lot longer than other reviewers on this site, since I had no help and broke up the work around dinner, putting kids to bed, etc. 531140

I purchased this hitch and the customer service they provided was fantastic! I mistakenly ordered a hitch that wouldn't fit over the full sized spare tire on my Highlander. I called customer service and Lexus helped me exchange the product effortlessly. She made it extremely easy to order the correct one and return the other. The product arrived within a couple days, even when ordered during the weekend. Once I received the hitch, it was incredibly easy to install. I'm not the handiest person, but I completed the installation within the estimated 90 minutes for an amateur. Everything lined up perfectly so there were no adjustments necessary. I couldn't be happier with the product and the excellent customer service! 531828

Installed hitch and wiring today for 2012 Highlander. Everything was perfect and very easy to install on my own, using just a floor jack and a 2x4 (a base to lift the hitch into place). I spent more time refitting the splash guards than with the hitch & wiring combined. I did not have to modify the passenger side splashguard at all (it's tight, but it fits). The instructions for the driver side splash guard is incorrect. All it needs is one corner removed (as shown on the instructions for that side) and a narrow slot cut to clear the vertical plate (part of the hitch). Wiring was very easy as well. I followed others' advice and installed the front wiring assy behind the plastic foot guard panel (left side of driver's left foot). For the rear wiring harness, I used the round rubber boot seal as noted by others (cutting an X just large enough to fit the smaller end of the rear harness. This allows the connector wiring to be routed under the car adjacent to the hitch receiver (much better than letting it hang out the door). Need to seal the rubber boot with silicon to prevent moisture entering the interior. My only complaint is there is no way to attach the rear connector wiring next to the receiver except with a zip tie. There really needs to be a more permanent / fixed attachment adjacent to the receiver for a professional appearance and long term use. Otherwise, I am very satisfied and happy to have saved quite a bit of cash. 530984

The hitch looks great and a great value. The only problem that I had was the installation, while following the online video. The video says to attach the passenger side first, then move to the drivers side. Well, that did not work for me. Due to the hitch driver side end bolt hole was not lining up correctly like all of the other pre-drilled holes (as many others have complained about). So what I did was set and align the passenger side accordingly without putting in the bolts. I then attached the hitch on the driver's side first, without tightening the bolts. Then went back to the passenger side pushed the hitch-up to align the holes and inserted all bolts and tightened slightly (it was just that simple). Had to use slight force to push the hitch up between the frame, but it wasn't the bad. Went back to the driver side and was able to tighten all bolts to specification and then back over to complete the passenger side. 546066

The most taxing thing about installing this hitch was working in the morning sun. If I’d have backed the Highlander into the shade of the garage and swept the floor first, it would have been more comfortable. I didn’t even have to jack up the wife’s Toyota!Just to make sure the welded-in nuts on the Toyota were clear of obstructions, I ran one of the bolts fully into each hole before putting the hitch in place. That helped me understand how to access the nut on the right side that was partially blocked by brake lines. The video said I’d need someone to hold up one end while I bolted up the other, but I just used a couple of jack stands to hold the hitch about two inches below the installed height. Every bolt hole lined up perfectly, and I was done more quickly than I anticipated. I’ve only used the hitch twice so far, and both times for a light load – my new side-by-side ATV on a small, open trailer. Hardly a challenge, but performance was perfect. I also purchased a wiring package, which was equally easy to install. I elected to put the control unit on the firewall rather than on the left side of the driver’s area, just because there appeared to be a larger unobstructed area, where the double-sided tape would easily stick. I hesitated for a minute or so because the instructions for locating the plug in the left rear of the vehicle were somewhat ambiguous, and I needed to remove more bits from the floor than the photos and diagrams seemed to indicate. Still, every connection worked effortlessly, and where it counted (i.e., where the fuse should be installed) the instructions were clear. 530971

The package was delivered undamaged. I mocked up the hitch receiver after pulling the plastic panels off my wife's 2013 Toyota Highlander and quickly realized the bolt holes didn't line up by 1 3/8" toward the front of vehicle and 1" toward the rear holes. I put a single bolt in the passenger side top front space and attempted to force the hitch receiver to align on the driver side. I couldn't even get it close with human force or by crowbar. Then I disconnected the passenger side and put a single bolt on driver side and attempted to align the holes on the passenger side. The same 1 3/8" offset and 1/4" twist was present; however, there wasn't a way to leverage power on the passenger side with crowbar to get the bracket around the frame rail. This same process/effort was attempted by putting a single bolt in every hole and trying to force the receiver to line up on the other side. It was a complete failure. I then took the entire hitch receiver from the jack stands and removed it from the vehicle. I went to my barn and set up the hitch receiver on my tractor stand and used my chain fall to physically pull the receiver ends apart and lengthen the hitch 1.5". Removed from tractor stand I re-mocked the hitch receiver under the vehicle and it was really close to lining up with factor holes. At this point I was able force the hitch into alignment and screw provided bolts into place. The 1/4" twist corrected itself as the receiver was torqued. This is not a direct fit product, fabrication is required. Since the box wasn't damaged I assume its a QAQC issue. I consider myself a shade tree mechanic and work a lot on my farm truck and tractors. It took me 4.25hrs. I will note that it is a good looking hitch receiver once it is installed but it is by no means a direct fit product. 533693

Just complete installation of the hitch on a 2013 Highlander. Total time to install was four hours. For ease of installation, I would suggest you drop the spare tire, have a bottle Jack and a large C clamp available. I installed the passenger side first with just a snug fit on the four bolts. The driver side required the C clamp and a small piece of wood to line up the remaining three bolt holes. All seven bolts were then torque to specifications. After installation, you'll end up with a hitch up against the bottom of the bumper extending out just enough to secure whatever you decide to use it for. I have a bicycle rack and cargo carrier with an (recommend) offset shank. The offset shank minimizes ground contact going in and out of driveways. 533777
