An example of sag on a truck's rear axle under a heavy load. The Timbren Suspension Enhancement System levels the vehicle.

Whether you're hauling heavy loads in the cargo area or by pulling a trailer, you will often see the rear sag while the front end rises. In these cases, the rear axle is handling not only the weight of the cargo, but more of the truck's weight, as well. Because less weight is on the front axle, the front tires are making less contact with the road. Overall handling - traction, steering, and braking - is negatively affected. But the resistance from Timbren's Suspension Enhancement System works with your factory suspension to keep your vehicle level and improve your driving experience.

Diagram of the Timbren spring installed

The Timbren system has a custom-fit bracket that will be bolted onto each frame rail above the rear axle. Hollow rubber springs are bolted to the bottom of the bracket and hang down to where the bottom of the spring sits, one inch above the axle. The inch of clearance allows the existing factory suspension to operate normally under light loads and standard terrain, ensuring the smooth, comfortable ride that you are used to.

Animation of a standard Timbren rubber spring

Timbren Suspension Enhancement Systems are designed to work progressively. When the hollow rubber springs are compressed, the convoluted design causes them to quickly collapse along the folds. Once the folds are compacted, the stacked barrel shape increases resistance, stiffening the suspension and keeping the truck level.

Timbren suspension system works to prevent body roll

Each hollow rubber spring works independently to support the driver's or passenger's side of your vehicle. This is helpful when you swerve or make sharp turns. Each spring is activated when it is needed, so body roll is greatly reduced. The independent action also works well when you are hauling off-center loads.

An example of a trailers swaying

Because the vehicle handles better with the springs, less turbulence will be passed along to the trailer, and this helps to keep the trailer in line. Your driving comfort is further enhanced if the trailer does begin to sway (from a gust of wind or a passing semi), because the movement from the trailer is not transferred to the truck. This also works to make the sway subside more quickly.

An empty truck on a bumpy road without Timbren

Another great feature of the rubber construction is that the springs absorb most of the road shock, creating a smoother, more stable ride overall. Wear and tear on the factory suspension is also lessened because the rubber springs work to prevent bottoming out on rough roads.

Compared to the Competition

Timbren's suspension enhancement systems are much easier to install than air springs - there are no air hoses to run, no compressors or gauges to hook up, and no manual adjustments to make. The rubber construction makes Timbren's springs more elastic than similar products constructed of microcellular urethane. And more elasticity allows for a more comfortable ride because the rubber has more travel.

Video Transcript for Timbren Front and Rear Suspension Enhancement Systems Review

Speaker 1: Today we're going to be taking a look at the Timbren line of suspension enhancement systems. Any time that we add weight to our vehicle, it's going to put a lot of strain and stress on the suspension, especially if we're towing a heavy camper, trailer, or we have a heavy load in the back.Tends to have the back end squat down, which again, it's going to put that strain and stress on the rear suspension because not only are we asking it to hold up the weight of the vehicle, but everything else that we add on to it. Which that can arise a lot of different issues. The front end is going to be getting pulled off, which will misalign our headlights, and our tires won't have as much contact, so our steering and braking is going to be diminished. But tat;s where timbrens are going to come into play. They're going to provide us that extra support so that when we do have those heavy loads, the back end doesn't sag down quite as much, and it's not putting so much stress on the back end. By doing that, the front end's not going to rise up, which means our headlights will be in line and our tires will have the correct amount of contact and pressure, so our braking and steering isn't affected.

And they're going to do that all while making our ride more comfortable with that extra load. Our timbrens are going to provide us the support we need by replacing our factory jump stops and mounting in between the frame and the axle. Now, yours may look different, so you want to double check inaudible 00:01:20 fit guide for your specific application. Now, each one of our timbrens is going to feature a steel bracket. They're all going to have black, powder coat finish on them to resist that rust and corrosion or any other kind of chemicals that may be on the road. They're going to have a hollow, rubber ayon 00:01:36 spring that's going to take a lot of that pressure and strain off of the rear suspension.Whenever we do load our vehicle down, the space between our frame and our axle is going to get smaller. That's where our spring is going to make contact with the axle, and it's going to start compressing.

Now, they are progressively rated, so if we have a small load or a light load, it's going to have a little soft engagement. But the further it gets compressed, the harder and stiffer it becomes, giving us the support we need with those heavy loads. And since they are rubber, they're going to have a lot of give to them, which means they're going to give us the support we need. But at the same time, they're going to give us some more cushion and absorb some of the road shock as we drive. And since the rear ones here aren't in constant contact with our aXle, it is going to provide us the same ride quality when it's unloaded. Our timbrens are going to work independently from each other from side to side. That way, if we have an off center load, it will help compensate for that, but at the same time, if we take an evasive maneuver or a really sharp turn, this is going to help reduce that body roll and some of that sway feeling that we get going on when we have a lot of added weight. Our timbrens for the rear are going to be a good enhancement for any time you're going to be adding weight to the back of your vehicle, whether it be a heavy trailer, a large load in the back or any other situation where you're adding a lot of weight to the back of your vehicle. Now, timbrens on the front are going to be a little bit different.

They're going to provide us that load-leveling support and make sure the front end doesn't get pushed down too far. However, these typically are going to be in contact all the time, which means it's going to give us that support and help reduce on that body roll all the time, all while absorbing that road shock, giving us a smoother ride. Now, some situations where you'd want that extra support on the front of the vehicle to keep it from getting pushed down too much would be if you have a snow plow or winch, if you flat-tow your vehicle, or if you have any other heavy accessory on the front. This is going to make sure that front end stays where it should be, and again, making sure our tires, braking and steering acts how they should. When comparing the timbrens to other suspension enhancement options like airbags, these are going to be a lot easier to install because we're not going to have to worry about running lines, maintaining air pressure, putting in switches or compressors or any of that. Once these are installed, these are going to be completely maintenance free. However, airbags are going to provide us with a lot more adjustability, whereas our timbrens are not going to have that. That'll finish up your look at the timbrens suspension enhancement systems..

I purchased the TDF15004B and TDR1500DQ products for my 2016 Ram 1500. Towing is way better and overall handling is improved. These products installed just fine. The directions were clear and concise. Etrailer has a helpful video series as well. Thanks to the staff at Etrailer for the great customer service and follow-up. Jj. 288803

These "enhanced" bump-stops have definitely improved the ride quality of my 2013 Ram 1500 quad cab when pulling our 7500 lb. 29 foot travel trailer. The trailer probably has 500+ pounds of food, clothes, kids toys, etc inside as well. The truck bed probably has another 800'ish pounds of equipment in it that compresses the suspension before I even hook the trailer up. With the stock stops the rear suspension hardly moved. After adding the new stops, the rear suspension had travel again and the steering felt less twitchy. Unloaded truck will hit the new stops only if I hit a pretty harsh bump but it's only noticeable if you're paying attention to it. With a loaded bed (no trailer) hitting the stops is more noticeable but you still need to hit a decent bump for them to touch. They are very easy to install. Take the time to read the instructions and watch the installation video before you pay someone $50-$75 for a 15-20 minute job. I would buy them again. 482362

Intall was very easy, took about 20 minutes with a floor jack, jack stands and a medium size screw driver to get old ones out. Have not hooked up trailer yet so can't say how well it keeps truck from sagging. I also have the airlift 1000 which were not heavy duty enough to handle my camper by themselves, failed twice. They do help lift back end slightly and firm the ride when empty. Combination should cover all my needs. 99257

Hello Merv. How much weight are you hauling? I haul two sleds and an aluminum deck on my truck. About 1500 pounds and found the bags to be not enough. How you recommend these for me? Thanks

Fast shipping and great customer service! Install time was 12 minutes on a 2011 Ram 1500 crew cab. Started with drivers side, jacked the truck using frame, placed suspension in place, placed two 2x4 slabs under Timbren, let jack down, placed jack under axle and jacked the axle to seat the Suspension. Did the same on passenger side. Simple and no maintenance like air bags. 32666

Have not tested it out yet, but the installation took about 15 minutes by myself, looking forward to trying them out with my 28ft enclosed trailer. You will need a block of wood under them when you let the jack down to seat them in the cups fully there is no way you can snap them in by hand, the video had that great suggestion 199076

Besides the prompt shipment of the Timbrens the product was excellent. First time I've found an installation that easy, just as described on your website(less than 30 minutes to deinstall the OEMs and put on the new ones).. Looking forward to my upcoming 800 mile trip pulling my 9000# 5th wheel. It'll be put to the test. The Timbrens are much heavier and longer so should reduce the squat and stabilize and improve the tow. 193280

Installed these exactly as the instructions and YouTube video on the website said. First time I took the truck down the road one fell out. I was kind of worried about this when I installed them as they didn't seem to fit the socket all that well. Pretty expensive experience. Highly NOT Recommended. 237785

Update - After a couple mis-communications, I got some advice on how to trim the upper lip of the Timbren spring so that it would fit into the bump stop socket. Once I got them properly seated, they work fine and improve the load carrying capability of my new Ram quite a bit. I was pretty upset with the email response I got when I asked for help, but somebody followed up with a phone call and actually understood the problem I was having and told me how to fix it. Thats pretty rare these days.

Thank you very much for the follow up Marc, happy to hear that our phone call follow up helped you out. After confirming with the manufacturer, trimming is not required for most installations, but is acceptable for this application.

Worked as Advertised! Easy to install. Made huge difference towing. 13' 1500 Ram Quade Cab. 33' Travel Trailer loaded to 9000lbs. Definitely took some stress off of the equalizer hitch. Nice when hooking up to move a short distance around the yard, no need to install equalizer bars - truck barely sags with out it. When not pulling you'll feel them a little when going over bumps, your back end will be extra stiff, but not bad enough that I've swapped them back even when not planning on pulling for a few months. 341401

Had the TDR1500DQ suspension kit for a year now and have been pleased. I carry a few hundred pounds of equipment all day during the week at work, and pull a travel trailer on weekends. These were a simple enhancement for my 2016 Ram 1500 crew cab. Only took a few minutes to install and they work great at leveling out the truck when hauling and keep the soft ride the rest of the time. Would definitely buy again. 425117

I first read a number of reviews with regard to the TDR1500DQ and saw a video on its installation. I was impressed and thought it would help with the "squat" in my Ram 1500 after I installed a fifth wheel trailer. And it did just what it said it would. I am very impressed with it and would recommend it to anyone with a Ram 1500. Thanks Brian T. Jones Hardenburgh, NY 152244

They work as advertised and significantly help my truck from squatting when pulling my camper and fourwheeler together. When I talked with Timbren directly they stated these are the 8600 lb model. They don't actually make a 6000 lb model for my 2013 quad cab. After installation on my stock pickup the springs were almost two inches away from the axle. I talked with timbren and they helped me get the spacer I needed free of charge. Overall both companies have been great to work with and the product works as advertised. I haven't noticed any change in ride quality when unloaded unless I hit a big bump pretty hard than it is a little bit more stiff, nothing I would care enough to complain about though. 99307

Great product. Next day delivery. Easy installation on my 2011 Ram 1500 Quad 4WD. I used two flat blade screw drivers to remove the old ones, prying them out. The Timbren's are much longer than stock and easily install per instructions. Installation was less than 30 minutes. I wished I had purchased them sooner! 231563

I have had them on for a year and have had the chance to put them to the test twice hauling some very substantial loads. My 2011 Ram 1500 Quad 4WD performed better than I anticipated. No sag in the rear of the truck and prevented in weight sway to either side on curves. Great product! If I do trade in my truck, this will be the first accessory I put on.

I was expecting this to be more difficult than it turned out. It took me about 1/2 hour to do on my 2016 Ram 1500 crew cab. I used a jack under the hitch to lift the bed about 3". The original yellow bumpers came off so easy that I can't imagine why they hadn't fallen out on their own. I got the new bumpers started in the retainer cup, placed 2 pieces of 2x4 blocks under them and lowered the bed, letting the weight push them all the way in. I have 1 1/4" gap between the bottom of the bumpers and the frame. I was expecting them to be a little closer to contact. It definitely has no effect on the ride with no load. I haven't yet hooked up my travel trailer to see what 900 lbs on the hitch will do. I bought these because my truck squatted down like it had a ton in the bed instead of just 900 lbs on the hitch. 447973

I have installed the Timbren SES on my 2012 Ram 1500. Total time including removal of OEM bumpers was 45 minutes. I added a preliminary step to the installation procedures. I cleaned the receptacle where the OEM bumper was located to remove the dirt and residue. That made the new parts slide into position easily. I used a small wood block as suggested to ensure complete seating of the new bumpers. They fit perfectly. I have approximately 1.25" of clearance between the bumpers and the rest. Can't wait to get my trailer hooked up to see how they perform. Excellent service as always from etrailer! 361463

I put these on my 14' Ram 1500 that has Mopar 2.5'' lift system. It took me longer to crawl under the truck than it did to pull off stock bump stops and install the rubber shocks. A little bit of soapy water and they slid right on. No need to jack up truck or use of any tools. Pulled 16' bumper pull stock trailer loaded down the same day and was very pleased with the elimination of bounce from the rear. Rams have coils in the rear that make the truck drive like a dream empty, but bouncy as heck pulling a trailer. I recommend this product to anyone with a Ram. Boots sit about 1.5'' above axel so still get same smooth ride when empty and support when you put on a load. 262130

A heavy workload on a Ram 1500 will cause the truck to squat with just 1 inch of clearance in the wheel-well. The stock suspension is soft and it feels precarious when under load. I would not say that Ram dropped the ball on their suspension since many of their 1500 customers do not load the truck down to use it to its rated capacity and the soft ride appeals to a large segment of drivers who cannot find it in other trucks. However, it seems that the Timbren bump stops are what should be on the truck if you are not getting a 2500 or 3500 but need to tow and haul. The Timbren rear enhancement system immediately improves the handling on the Ram 1500 and stands up even when placing it under load. It is almost like buying a whole new truck. I cannot compliment this product enough and I am extremely pleased with how the truck handles both loaded and unloaded. It is not too stiff and it does not feel bumpy like other enhancements might. But it feels sturdy and the truck feels stronger almost right away. I could have gone with a different distributor for these parts but etrailer.com is more than just a distributor. You can find official etrailer.com videos on most of their products which will give you honest information on their products and explain how to install and use those products. If you have a question, you will get a reply from them with an expert on the subject. They are interested in finding you solutions first and the sales are just a byproduct from their expertise. I did not find these parts cheaper anywhere else, but I still would have gone with etrailer.com even if they cost a little more. I chose etrailer.com because I know I can trust them to get me the good stuff. 510713

These are the second set of Timbren SES I have purchased, the first being for a 2006 Nissan Titan and these for a 2013 Dodge Ram. Both were purchased in order to pull a fifth wheel camper and minimize the "squatting " issue. I am very pleased with the result. Installation on the Dodge was literally a 5 minute breeze as there are no nuts and bolts to remove. Just popped out the old ones and pushed these into place. Lowering the fifth wheel onto the bed secured them into place. The ride is impacted slightly when not pulling the camper, but as these install so easily, I will be able to put the OEM parts back into place with ease when not towing to soften the ride. I highly recommend for anyone pulling heavy loads. 87257

Hi Jerry, you just reinforced my decision. My wife bought a 7000gvw horse trailer bumper pull, so my lil 2wd ram short bed swatted at the sight I bought and installed these ant the tow levels changed immediately. The empty weight can be a bit jarring and I was considering the same, take them out for the next 3-4 months winter in mass. And stick em back in in the spring. Glad I saw your review. Thanks, Mort T

I got a quote on an air bag suspension---1200 dollars. These Timbrens cost a little more that 200. They work great. I can't believe that these do the job that they do. I pull a 38 foot 8200 lb. camper w/an 860 lb. tongue weight. Even with a good weight distributing hitch, my truck rides 5 in. low in the back. I put the Timbrens in & now it rides an inch & a half low. That is exactly the distance that the Timbrens have to travel before they engage. These don't need adjusting, they're warranty is lifetime & I saved 1200 bucks. I think they're great. When unloaded, you can't even tell they're on. 100 % satisfied. 547074

Just what I was looking for. Using these on my 2017 RAM 1500, towing a 5K trailer with a 400 lb. tongue weight. Support is good, ride is good, and easy installation. Great product and would recommend to others. 517027

I have a 1500 RAM that has the towing package with the Correct rear axle for towing. However it lacked when put under heavy loads we carry a 28 ft V NOSE trailer with 4 sleds. This product turned my 1500 into a 2500 best product on the market they install in minutes. I remove them when not using to maintain the stock OEM ride. 483774

These timbrens are a much better product than I ever dreamed. I had air bags on previous trucks. These work great. Very little cost and installed in 15 minutes on my 2018 Ram. I watched a video and cut 2 blocks in that time too. I tow a job trailer and this truck had more sag from hitch weight than last truck. Rear coil springs. Solved that issue. I'd get them again for sure. 553241

Product arrived a day early!!...install took 15 minutes. Worked as advertised, stiffened up the rear end of my truck and made the ride while pulling 8000lbs of travel trailer much smoother. Worth every penny!! 199349

I have a T.T. 8,300 max. loaded rating, am usually 8,000 like you with 825 lbs tongue weight, have Sherline tongue scales. Went from 1998 Ram 2500 HD suspension 60 leaf springs. 312/15 got 2015 Ram 1500 with coil springs. Truck is loaded to capacity. When hook up trailer got really serious sguat to it. I tow at 60 to 65 max. Stay at 60mph for better fuel economy with V-6 Ecodiesel. Have only towed 767 miles avg. 18 mph. Nick did you by chance take measurements before and after on your truck squat. I use Reese weight distribution set up. I am still tweaking my W.D. set up, new truck sit about 1.25 to 1.5 lower than old Ram 2500. By the way what are you towing with ?

I did not write down any measurements before or after spring install sorry. I have a WD hitch as well by EZ load I pull with a 2013 Ram 1500, 5.7 L Hemi. Sorry I couldnt be more help, I took measurements when installing the springs but I didnt write them down and its been a few weeks so I dont remember. My recollection is that they took about 0.5 inch of squat out, and the ride was MUCH smoother.

So far so good. Got them installed in about 15 mins. From what i can tell the day to day ride does not change but put some weight in the back and hit a bump and you remember that they are there. Now i am just waiting for my next trialer trip to see how they do with a real load. 344333

Took me longer to dig out my Jack and set up that to actually install the Bump Stops.. Gained Back 2" of Sag with my 8,000 LBS trailer.. Cant say anything about the ride with a load yet have not done a trip yet with them.. 419628

The bump stops are working great with a nice steady ride. When driving without a load the ride is much firmer and more truck like.

Overall easy to install. Use soapy water to assist in getting these to seat easier. I used a jack and 2 small pieces of wood to help get them in. Attached are a comparison to the stock shock bumpers and what I upgraded to. Also what they look like installed on my 2018 Ram 4X4 Eco. Haven't towed my TT with them yet. I'll update my review once I put them to the true test. 542211

Purchased these after researching and reading reviews about how these helped others with the same problem I had. They came quickly and were very easy to install. Took less than 30 minutes. The rear end of our 2013 Dodge would sink when we hooked up our Ultra Light trailer. It has a 2" lift on the front. After installing the Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement System things seemed to level out and we will see how much better it rides this weekend! Customer service was great. Contact about shipping and receiving was swift and easy. Thanks. Pictures attached show the spacing on the rear tire/wheel well before and after. Sturdy strong product. Thank you. 377449

Brought these for my 2011 Ram 1500. Took me 15 minutes total to install and noticed an instant difference. Have not yet had a chance to try them with heavy load but already impressed with them. I pull a 26 ft. gooseneck with my 1/2 ton Ram. With standard, factory suspension the truck squatted too much with the trailer on it. After installing this Timbren System, which was really easy to install, my truck now stays level when pulling the trailer and it handles the trailer better - not as much sway or bounce. The other thing that I really like is that when there is no weight on the truck, it still has the ride and feel of factory suspension. No regrets. 488050

2012 Dodge Ram Pickup

The timbren did a great job on my 2012 RAM hauling a 28' travel trailer. When the truck isn't heavily loaded you'd never know they were there. Once loaded up they stop the dreaded saggy RAM butt and keep the truck much closer to level without complicated airbags. I moved them onto my new RAM last year and they're just as successful there and I'm fairly certain will prevent the premature rear shock failure that occurred on my 2012 that came as a result of squashing the rear end during backing of my travel trailer after the Reese weight distributing hitch (also recommended) was disconnected for tight corner backing into campsites. Also prevented dropping the RAM too low if heavily loaded with lumber or whatnot as the original stops are very soft and will bottom out your shocks. If you occasionally find your RAM sitting on the rear bump stops, don't overthink it, just buy these. You'll still hit the stops, but they'll be sturdy height maintaining stops instead of a squishy shock busting stops. The ride gets a little bouncy when you're bottomed out on the timbren, so if you're looking to run your RAM at full capacity over long distances you'll probably want to get airbags or springs. But for occasional heavy loading for short distances these can't be beat in quality or price. Also etrailer was helpful in finding me a solution to use these on my 2012 Outdoorsman RAM which has a slightly higher ride height than the standard RAM. 512990

I spoke with the folks at etrailer and at Timbren direct. After that they helped me pick out the right stops for my truck. I went with TDR1500DQ. Ordered on a Wednesday and received them on Friday. It took 15 minutes install both stops. Very simple operation!! I had 6 inches of rear tire clearance before installation and after with my boat hooked up and a full load in the bed I had 4 7/8 clearance. I am very happy with the results but I think I am going to add a 1/2 spacer. I would highly recommend Timbren and etrailer 436124

Have a horse trailer that was a bit heavy in the tongue weight. Soft factory coil springs in the rear let my back end sink down 5 inches. I simply popped these in to the bumpstop cups, and had an instant second set of helper springs. I did notice I needed about 1 more inch of rise- I called Timbren, who immediately sent out the 1 inch spacers to get my truck under load perfectly set-up. eTrailer and Timbren are great to work with A+++ 130155

2016 Dodge Ram Pickup

To say I'm very happy with this product is an understatement. First off, shipping was fast and the communication from George was top notch. Secondly, installation was as easy as it gets. Find a safe, flat area to jack your truck up by the frame (this creates space between the factory bump stops and the axle) then remove the factory bump stops. You may need a flat head screw driver for this to pry the old bumps stops out (easy)... insert the new Timbren Suspension System...a 6 inch long 2x4 would be helpful here....safely place the 2x4 atop the axle directly under the Timbren system, then slowly lower the vehicle. The weight of the vehicle will force the Timbren system up into the receiving end and this should complete the install. It took me longer to dig out my floor jack, cut a small piece of 2x4, then installing the Timbren system. Lastly, I immediately hooked up my camper a 24' (27' all in) Forest River and instantly saw my 2016 RAM leveled out. I have a 3 hr trip planned in the coming weeks and will offer some feedback on the ride with this new Timbren system in place. Pretty impressed thus far 426206

I’m posting review of how the installation went. The installation is so easy, all you need is a jack and 2 short 2x4 boards(for compressing the Timbrens evenly into the socket). I have a 2011 Dodge Ram 4.7l. Pictures below shows my original where rotted and crumbled as soon as I touched them. My truck without from the ground to top of rear fender sits at 38 inches, after my trailer load out on it goes down to just a tad below 37 inches. Major difference, before it would go beyond 35 inches or below. Pictures #1 show the original yellow rotted ones Picture #2 is the tinbren installed. 538539

  • Comparing the Timbrens and AirLift Springs for a 2016 Ram 1500
  • Your 2016 Ram 1500 is absolutely equipped to tow a 6,000 lb trailer. However, this vehicle has rear coil springs which tend to compress more so than trucks with rear leaf springs when a load is present. This means that the vehicle will be more prone to sagging/squatting while loaded/towing. In order to reduce the amount of sag/squat you receive while loaded/towing, I highly recommend using a set of suspension enhancements such as the Air Lift AirLift 1000HD Air Helper Springs part #...
