Quick Tip: There's really not a whole lot to getting new drum brakes. If you've confirmed that all of the specs listed above line up with what you need for your trailer, you can be pretty sure these will work for you.

Automotive-Grade Brake Pads

These pads are SAE certified. As a result, this material provides high-performance braking, and is safe for use throughout the United States and Canada.

A close-up shot of a drum brake shows a tapered brake pad.

These pads are also tapered, which should help to prevent any broken, crumbly bits of material from rotating inside the drum as the pads wear over time. Brakes without these tapers are more likely to create a jarring braking experience that could cause the brakes to stutter and lock up.

Riveted brake pads will always give you a screeching reminder to replace your brake shoes. That's because the rivets will scrape against your drum as the friction material wears down. You won't have that noisy problem with bonded brake pads. You'll also get a little more friction pad contact because there aren't any cutouts for rivets. And more friction means more stopping power.

Self-Adjusting Brakes Don't Require Routine Maintenance

With typical electric brake assemblies, you need to manually adjust them every now and then to make sure you're getting the shortest stopping distances every time you tow.

A trailer drum brake with a red callout shows the location of a tension cable and pulley on a self-adjusting trailer brake.

With self-adjusting brakes, though, you'll always have peak stopping power - simple as that! As the brake pads wear over time, a tensioning cable will automatically keep the pads in alignment so they'll consistently make contact with your drum when you brake. You won't have to do tedious manual adjustments anymore.

How to Break In New Brakes

Once you get these brakes installed, you'll need to break them in. First, find a long stretch of road or a big, empty parking lot. Once you're there, set your brake controller to its maximum setting and get moving. Speed up to about 40 mph and brake to slow to about 20 mph. Repeat this 15-30 times. The goal is to get the brake shoes and magnet properly seated into your drum. You'll know you've done that when it feels less jerky (and more consistent) each time you apply the brakes.

Note: The brakes will be very hot after doing this, so after every 10 stops you'll want to wait about 10 minutes to let the brakes cool off before continuing. If you don't, you might cook and crack the pad material.

E trailer has a great website that made it really easy to find the brake parts I needed, I was a little worried about being able to find the right parts, but these guys made it a really easy, smooth process. Once I placed my order it got to me quickly and everything fit perfectly. My new go to for any trailer parts!

by:

I was extremely disappointed in the condition the the brakes arrived.
They were packed loosely in a tire box with some brown paper thrown in.
The paint was scratched so they looked used. There was no visible labels for left and right brakes. I can't rate the brakes yet because I haven't installed the.

Oh dear, I apologize that they arrived this way. I will have our Customer Service team reach out to you. As for the labels, they are typically located on the inner back wall of the brake assembly. The drivers side will be stickered as part BK-10E-01SA and the passenger side will be stickered as part BK-10E-02SA.

Fit great in trailer and easy to install

by:

I ordered these brakes and they were delivered in a timely manner, giving me time to have my trailer ready to go by the first of the week. To my disappointment when I opened the box, I was shipped manual adjusting instead of the automatic adjusting that I ordered. Customer support was helpful and are to ship me correct brakes. Unfortunately I have had to cancel plans due to not having my trailer available. Very disappointing to me and my family.
Also packaging of brakes I received was very poor, units were "rattling around" unpadded and unsecure. Two of the units had brake shoes and adjusters knocked loose. Hopefully etrailer's shipping department can due better.

by:

Thanks for a great product
A minor suggestion:
The pressed-in studs (4 bolts) on a couple of the drums came loose during shipping. I realize that they will re-insert themselves back in during tightening but the fit may get damaged in the process (this may account for one buyer complaining that one of them couldn't be tighten or kept turning).
Suggest you add a blob of adhesive to the head of stud.

by:

Only missing the 5th star because 1 of the parts sent was the wrong part and missing pieces. Problem was corrected very quickly with excellent customer service

by:

So far everything looks good out of the box! Will give a later review when project is complete,

Erica was responsive and on top of everything. Called me to make sure we were ordering the right part as soon as I was questioning it. The assembly came in a little weird from shipping and she connected me right away to Angela who had an immediate fix which was spot on. Highly recommend this team and company and look forward to using them again moving forward.

  • Correct Replacement Braking Assemblies for 2010 Forest River R-Pod 171
I don't know exactly what eletric trailer brakes you need for your 2010 Forest River R-Pod 171 but I can help you narrow this down and give you the info you need to find this out yourself. The reason for this is because Forest River used multiple different axles on these R-Pod's, mostly due to on-hand stock. If it's a Lippert Axle it's likely their diamond/square 3,500 lb and in which case the TruRyde Electric Trailer Brake Kit part # TRU36FR is indeed correct. That said, I would hate for...

  • Can I Install Brakes On Only One Axle Of A 2 Axle Trailer And Which Axle Should They Go On?
If you are only putting brakes like the # TRU36FR on one axle, we recommend doing the front axle for a few reasons. First, the front axle technically will bear more weight than the rear. Most trailers it would be about 60% on the front axle and 40% of the trailer weight on the rear. Since the front axle bears more weight this effectively gives it more braking power. Secondly with the way tandem axle suspension flexes (especially leaf spring axles), the front axle is actually pushed...

  • What Brakes With With Prodigy P3 Brake Controller
Hey Mike; thanks for the question and you will need electric brakes to go with the Prodigy P3 Brake Controller # 90195. To get the right ones you need to measure the diameter and depth of the drum of your hub. For example it measured 10" x 2-1/4" you would need the Electric Trailer Brakes - 3.5K # TRU36FR. You also need to check your brake mounting flange, as these would require a 4-bolt flange. I have added a link below to our entire selection of electric brakes for you which you can...

  • Replacing The Electric Brakes On A 1965 Streamline Empress
That is a very neat trailer! I am happy to try and help you along. With an axle that old, it may prove very difficult to find parts that are directly compatible. A lot of parts they used back then are more or less obsolete now. A majority of the electric bake kits we sell will use either a 4 or 5 bolt flange. We do not offer any brakes that use a 6 bolt flange. That said we may still have some options for you. We do offer replacement spindles with a pre welded brake flange like part #...

  • Does TruRyde Electric Brakes TRU36FR Fit Kelsey Hayes 3,500lb Axle?
From all of the information I can find on your Kelsey Hayes 3,500lb axle it should use the standard 3,500lb brakes with the standard 4 bolt mounting flange. I'd recommend confirming this before you order, but the TruRyde # TRU36FR should work perfectly for you, though you'll want to add the replacement nuts and washers # BRKH10B.

  • Is TruRyde Electric Trailer Brake Kit For 3,500 lb Axles Correct For 2017 Winnebago Minnie 2500RL
You do have the correct electric brakes for your 2017 Winnebago Minnie 2500RL with the TruRyde Electric Trailer Brake Kit - Self-Adjusting - 10" - Left and Right Hand - 3,500 lbs # TRU36FR. The magnet would be an issue if you see their windings beginning to show through the friction surface of the magnet, but in general if the brakes are still functioning then the magnet is fine. The # TRU36FR come with magnets so you wouldn't have to replace those separately; the only other thing you...

  • Replacement Brake Assemblies and Hub/Drums for 2013 CrossRoads Zinger Travel Trailer
For the broken brake assembly the TruRyde kit part # TRU36FR would be your best option for a self adjusting brake set that comes with a replacement left and right hand side assembly. Then for replacement hub/drums you'd want the part # AKHD-545-35-EZ-K which comes with new bearings and seals.

Hey Kent, with just the info you gave me I can let you know what you would need. The correct bearing kit would be the part # BK2-100 and for brake assemblies you'd want the part # TRU36FR. If you happened to also be looking for hub/drums you'd want the part # AKHD-545-35-EZ-K. These actually come with bearings so you wouldn't need to also buy those if this is what you needed.

  • Will TruRyde Self Adjusting Brakes Replace Kelsey Hayes 602027 & 602028 Electric Brakes?
Yes, the Self-Adjusting TruRyde Electric Trailer Brake Kit # TRU36FR will fit as a replacement for your Kelsey Hayes 602027 and 602028. I recommend getting the Mounting Hardware # BRKH10B as the original hardware often times becomes damaged during removal due to corrosion. Be sure to inspect your Drums # AKHD-545-35-EZ-K to determine if they will also need to be need replaced.

Yes, they are. The Dexter Trailer Hub & Drum Assembly item # 84546UC3-EZ and the TruRyde Electric Trailer Brake Kit item # TRU36FR are both compatible. The Hub comes individually you will need two per axle and the brakes come as a set so you will only need one per axle. Hopefully the information below answers your question about the 4 holes base.
