Thoroughly Tested for Safety

This hub-and-drum assembly meets the requirements for certification by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA). The CSA creates standards, which when complied with ensure a safe and quality product. This assembly underwent extensive testing to measure stopping distances when braking. This assembly has also been tested by QAI for braking performance in a complete automotive setup and under real-world conditions to provide the most realistic scenario for the everyday driver.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: 8 on 6-1/2 means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: 5 on 4-1/2 means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance (D) from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Video Transcript for etrailer Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly Review

Speaker 1: Today we're gonna be taking a look at etrailer line of trailer hub and drum assemblies. These are designed to work with 3,500 lb axles and offer a 10" diameter. They're available in the 5 on 4-1/2" bolt pattern with and without the easy lube hubs, the 5 on 4-3/4" bolt pattern with and without easy lube hubs, and the 5 on 5" bolt pattern. This hub and drum kit is designed to work with electric brakes. It's gonna give us the outer surface just like the brakes on a car. The shoes expand outward grabbing ahold of the drum, slowing it down through friction. To do that, it's gonna use a magnet.

You can see this machined surface that we've got here. It just floats along that surface until it's energized. When it's energized, it sticks, and that moves our lever arm on our brakes, expanding them out. You can see the quality in construction here. When deciding on the right hub, there's no huge differences in them. Basically, the only way you're really gonna be able to tell a good hub, like what we've got here, from a poor quality hub is just in the way it looks.

Their holes like we talked about aren't gonna be clean. The machined surfaces aren't gonna be as nice, and there's likely gonna be overcast on these outside edges. You can see they just didn't take the time to really get it perfect.Regardless of which bolt pattern choose, you're gonna have everything you need in the hub kit to get it put together. You can see we're gonna have brand new lug nuts. We won't have to worry if we've got some that are worn out or stripped.

No issues there. We've got new bearings we'll be able to put in. We're also gonna have a new seal. Once we get our inner bearing put in place, we're gonna have our new seal to go right down in there, keep everything in. That seals right around the spindle, keeps our grease from coming out of the back side there. There is a messy part of the job involved, and that's packing the bearings.

We recommend, if you're going to be doing a marine application, using a marine grade grease, or for non-marine applications, just a high temp. This is an LMX red. It's available on our website. There's several strategies to packing bearings. There are bearing packers available, which we do have on our website as well. I prefer just an old fashioned style. I'm just gonna take some grease, spread it around on my hand there. You'll see the bearing tapers. I like to go on the larger side here, and I'm gonna use that gap to scoop up grease. There it goes in there. Right in that gap. But if we continue to do that, the slight pressure we create on our hand will force that grease up between each of these rollers. I'm getting some to start to come out of there, so you can see it. You see right here on the top Got those little grease droplets poking through, that's where we'll know our bearing has been packed. Then we'll just turn it a little bit, continue doing that. We wanna see those start to come up all the way around the bearing. That means we've got our bearing full packed full of grease. Inner bearing's gonna be the same way. Just gonna take a little less grease because it's a little bit smaller. We'll place our outer bearing right inside the back of the hub. We'll make sure it seats in there properly. We've got our seal that's included with the kit. That's designed to fit down inside. It's kind of a pressure fit, so you will have to knock it in. We recommend using part number PTW83020. It's a seal, race, bearing driver. It's gonna help to give you a nice contact point on the back of that seal as you drive it in place. If you don't have one of these handy or if you didn't order one, you can use a 4x4 block. That's pretty common, too. Just place it on there and gently tap it down into place. The key to it is just to get it started squarely initially. You can see we're in all the way around there. Now we'll just drive it down so it's flush. You'll hear it come to a stopping point. You can see that's gonna go just inside that lip a little bit. That'll be perfect for us. We'll have to wait to put on the outside until we get it on our spindle.Something I like to do is take grease and pack it in the hub while we still have it off of the trailer. If you're using the easy lube style, then you're not gonna have to worry about doing this. You can fill it up with the grease gun after you have it on the trailer, but for the non-easy lube style, we wanna get this full so we don't have any room for moisture to get in there, which is what caused the rust on those spindles to start with. Nice and full of grease all the way around. We'll get it slid onto our spindle.Let's just get that slid on. You wanna try to keep it centered over the spindle so we don't have too much grease that we push out this way. Now, we'll place our outer bearing in. We want the taper to face in towards the hub. Get that seated in there. Then we need to replace the bearing that we removed. Then we can replace the washer. Some people call it a bushing. Put our nut back on. We'll run that down. You'll feel it begin to get tight. You see there's a little bit of resistance in our hub there. I like to just make sure that we get it fully compressed. Then what we'll do is back that off just a little bit. Wanna make sure that our hub spins pretty freely, but also you should be able to pull out and in on it and not feel any movement. We don't want any what they call end play. We don't want this to move in and out at all. Then we wanna take our cotter pin, slide that back through, and then just bend those back over. Just like that. We've got our dust cap that we can put in place. Depending on your axle, these may be a little bit different. For the standard style, you're just gonna have a solid dust cap. For these easy lube style, you have a little bit different cap that's gonna have a plug in it so you can access the grease cert. It's gonna be just like our seal. We wanna get it on. We wanna get it squarely in position, and then just tap it in a little bit at a time. We'll tap all the way around that edge until it seats all the way in and against our hub. Sometimes this cap is gonna deform. It's just part of it to get it seated in there properly.Just to make sure that our new brake assembly's gonna work out properly with our hub assembly, you can hook your vehicle up to your truck, whatever you're gonna be pulling with or if you have a trailer tester you can use that. You just want to move it. You can see we've got free movement now. Go ahead and turn the brakes on. And you see that's gonna lock up, stop our brakes from moving. That means we've got a good working system. This is gonna work well together. As we start applying our brakes during use, it's gonna automatically adjust to the proper tension for us.Now, you wanna head over to the other side of the trailer and get your hub installed there in the exact same way. Once we have both of our hubs installed, we can put our tire back on, and we'll secure that in place with the new provided lug nuts. When installing your lug nuts, you want the tapered side to face towards your wheel. Then we'll snug them up and torque them down. With everything working properly, that's gonna complete our installation of the etrailer self-adjusting 10" electric trailer brake kit.

Great products and prices. These 3,500 lb brake drum/hubs appear to be well made and will be used to complete a new axle I've had a few years to construct a tandem axle trailer. I plan to order more of these for other axles as well. The 4 lug X 4" BC hubs are also well made and will be used on a hydraulic log splitter and small yard waste dump trailer to replace one-piece wheel hubs. This will allow me to use some surplus 8" tires on 4 lug wheels I have left over from some small trailer projects. 463313

  • Recommended Trailer Hubs and Brakes for Lippert 4,400 Pound Axle
  • I spoke with my contact at Lippert and for your trailer axle, you will want to use the Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly # AKHD-655-35-K. This will serve as a perfect replacement for your existing assemblies, with the same inner/outer bearings and listed weight capacity. They have a 6 on 5-1/2 inch bolt pattern and all of the bearings, races and seals are included. • We do have Bearing Buddies that would fit the 1.980 inch diameter hub bore used by the # AKHD- 655-35-K hub/drum. I'd recommend the stainless steel version, part # BB1980A-SS. For the Bearing Buddy seals, use # BB60002. Unfortunately, the # AKHD-655-35-K is a pre-packaged kit, we can't substitute any parts. The # R2061-284 stub spindle is compatible with the L44649 and L681449 bearings used by the hub/drum you're interested in, so it could be fabricated into a spare tire mount. I've...

  • Parts Needed to Add Electric Drum Brakes to a Trailer
  • It sounds like you have bearings # L68149, that measures 1.378 inches, and # L44649, which measures 1.063 inches. If so the hub and drum assembly # AKHD-655-35-K will fit your axle. This kit also includes the races and seal. It's for 3,500 pound axles and has a 6 on 5-1/2 bolt pattern. With a 3,500 pound axle you'll need brake flanges with a 4-bolt pattern like # 4-35. Your trailer may already have these and if so that's good. The brake flange needs to be welded to the end of the...

  • Electric Brake Hubs For M105A2 Military Trailer With 6 On 5 1/2 Inch Bolt Pattern
  • I can help you find electric brake hubs for the M105A with a 6 on 5-1/2 bolt pattern. The bearings that come with the hubs fit the spindle based on the capacity of the axle on the M105A. From my research the M105A2 either uses a 5200 lb or 6000 lb axle. I recommend trailer hub and drum assembly part # AKHD-655-6-K. This hub and drum comes with inner bearing part # 25580 and outer bearing part # 15123. It fits a 12 inch diameter brake assembly. You do want to check your existing bearings...

  • Hub and Drum Assembly for Lippert 4,400 lb Axles on a 2017 Keystone Cougar 29BHSWE
  • Since your 2017 Keystone Cougar 29BHSWE uses an inner bearing of # L68149 and an outer bearing of # L44649 and uses 10" brakes, like part # AKEBRK-35-SA, the best hub and drum assembly would be either part # AKHD-655-35-K for a standard spindle or part # AKHD-655-35-EZ-K for an E-Z Lube spindle. These have a 6 on 5-1/2" bolt pattern so they will match up with what you have, but you will want to check to make sure that the 1.719" inner diameter of the grease seal matches that of your...
