How to Use Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty

Adjusting the braking settings on the Tow-Pro Liberty is super simple. To get more power output - the maximum amount of power that will be applied to your trailer's brakes - rotate the knob clockwise toward 10. To decrease the power output, rotate it counterclockwise toward 0.

Redarc Tow Pro Liberty Braking Output Red Light

When you apply the tow vehicle's brakes, the knob will change from blue to red to signal that the trailer brakes are being activated. The higher the braking power output, the deeper the red that you will see.

Manual Override

To engage manual override, simply press the control knob. This will activate the trailer's brakes and brake lights independent of your tow vehicle, great for stopping sway or controlling your trailer's momentum in an emergency.

How to Calibrate Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty

When you are calibrating the brake controller for the first time, the LED lights will signal your progress.

Redarc Tow Pro Liberty Dash Mounted Remote Knob

You'll start by braking 20 times or so to let the unit learn its orientation and the direction of travel. You don't need to have a trailer connected for it to calibrate; the only difference is that the knob won't illuminate at all. If your trailer is connected, the LED light will flash green/blue as it calibrates. When the display turns solid blue, initial calibration is complete.

Once done, the unit will remain calibrated. If recalibration is required, it will happen automatically and without LED indication.

How to Install Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty

The Liberty has almost no mounting restrictions. It comes in 2 pieces: the main unit and the control knob. The main unit mounts out of sight and out of the way. You don't have to worry about dinging your knee on a bulky brake controller or interfering with your vehicle's airbags.

The control knob can be installed in any convenient spot that's easy for you to see and access. This can be a blank switch panel, an open spot on your center console, or wherever there's space on your dashboard. A universal mounting panel is included to ensure a clean, from-the-factory look. Custom-fit panels are available for certain vehicles as well. Before you do any drilling, be sure there's enough clearance behind the dash for the entire knob to install!

where to install REDARC Tow Pro Liberty on 2023 Jeep Wrangler 4xe

Once you've decided where you want to put the control knob, you'll need to find a good place to install the main unit. Your only restriction is the 3' cable connecting the main unit and the control knob. Securely mount the box using screws, double-sided tape, or zip-ties (not included). A mounting kit (RE67FR - sold separately) is also available for the Tow-Pro Liberty. Do not attach the module to wiring or cables that can shift as you drive!

Custom wiring harness of Redarc Tow Pro Liberty

Then plug the custom-fit harness right into your vehicle and the brake controller and you're done!

Note: If you don't already have a 7-way plug at the back of your vehicle, take a look at our exclusive 7- and 4-way brake controller installation kit (ETBC7 - sold separately).

What is Proportional Braking?

What is proportional Braking

Proportional braking means that your trailer brakes mimic your tow vehicle's brakes. If you slam on the brakes in your vehicle, your trailer brakes will activate with the same intensity; if you brake lightly, your trailer brakes lightly too. The trailer's braking is in proportion to your vehicle's braking. This saves wear and tear on the tires and the brakes on both your vehicle and trailer.

The Tow-Pro Liberty uses an internal 3-axis accelerometer to sense how your vehicle is braking so it can send the right amount of braking power to your trailer. It measures the inertia of your tow vehicle and activates the trailer's brakes to slow at the same rate. The result is uniform braking across your towing setup. No push-pull action - just smooth, proportional braking every time.

Video Transcript for Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty Brake Controller Installation - 2023 Toyota 4Runner

Hello neighbors, it's Brad here at etrailer and today we're taking a look and installing the Tow-Pro Liberty Brake Controller on a 2023 Toyota 4Runner. Now this is what the REDARC looks like when it's installed and compared to a lot of your traditional brake controllers that you see mounted up on a dash that you inevitably hit your knees on, the REDARC really does a fantastic job of making it look like an OEM brake controller. As you can see, even with this factory knockout plate the button matches all of the controls here. It's hidden out of the way, but it's still super accessible and equally as usable as any other brake controller. Just like any other brake controller you can pick between two modes. You can have it to where it's user controlled or you can have it proportional to the braking pretty easy.

So right now it's at zero it's not gonna be putting any gain on there but the heavier the trailer, you just go up a little bit and if you need to adjust it while driving it's gonna keep it at that setting. And that is also super easy to get your manual override here by just pushing the button or you can have it proportional so as much as you hit the brakes it's gonna kick on and to swap between the two modes, it's just a double tap. So it's super easy. Now as far as install goes, it's incredibly easy to do and it gives you a really clean package overall once it's done. If you are looking for a brake controller for your 4Runner and you're just shopping around this is the one to go to.

My friend recently just put one on his and I did it in his driveway in about 15 minutes. So it was really cool, he was excited about it and it works fantastic, so definitely a great option. Now this one in particular is for one to two axles. If you need to step up to three axles, which probably isn't something you'd be towing with this there is another option available and that's the Tow-Pro Elite. It installs exactly the same but the main difference is just gonna be the fact that you can have up to three axles.

When picking up your brake controller for your 4Runner you're gonna want to get this adapter harness and this is gonna make it super easy as far as, I mean just really plugging it into the factory tow package. And then this will go into our brake controller so you'll be happy to know there's zero wire splicing, there's zero having to tie into anything electrical. We're really just gonna plug this in, get our ground and then make the rest of our connections. Before you know it you'll have your brake controller installed. Our first step is gonna be locating our factory tow package plug.

So you're gonna check right by where your parking brake is kinda by the footrest and you're gonna see there's a large wire grouping. It kind of looks like a main harness there and there's gonna be a zip tie as well as one wrap of tape that's around this white plug. So if you cut that zip tie and cut that piece of tape just make sure you don't nick any of the wires. You're gonna be able to pull that plug down a little bit easier and give you a little bit more room to work. So now that we have our plug accessible this is just simply going to snap into it so you can make sure that that's plugged in. But we do have this ground wire with a ring terminal and finding a factory ground makes it nice and easy. You don't have to put any self-tapping screws in and I did find a 10 millimeter bolt. You can use a 10 millimeter socket to get it loose and it's kind of right by the parking brake. It bolts into the side, it kind of faces this way. So with a socket and a ratchet you can take that off and that's gonna become a good grounding point for our ground wire. So I'm gonna go ahead, I'll get this plugged in and then kind of show you how it looks. I was able to get this ring terminal mounted up. You're just gonna take a look at where your hood latch release is and just kind of look, it's bolted in. It kind of points to the outside of the vehicle. Again, a 10 millimeter socket's gonna loosen that up. So put the ring terminal on there, tighten it back down. And that's a one step already down. We are gonna be mounting up our brake controller in one of these knockout panels and we actually picked up a REDARC knockout panel specifically for Toyotas. It's really nice because there's no drilling involved and if you we're to ever take the braking system to another vehicle you can just put that factory one back in. You don't have any holes drilled for mounting. To gain access not only to knock out the knockout plates but also to get everything plugged in and mounted up I'm gonna just pull on this portion of our dash it's gonna loosen it up. So just kinda reach your fingers between the steering column and the plastic and just kind of pull back. It doesn't take much pressure here but this is gonna kind of drop it down and give us a lot of access. So while I have this open I'm gonna take my plug and route it up trying to keep it along the side. We wanna make sure that there's no interference with our parking brake, so just kind of pull that plug up and then we'll continue by connecting everything else together. Now you do want to determine which knockout panel you want to use to mount up your controller. So sit in the vehicle and kind of pretend that you're driving down the road and that you want to use the manual override, figure out which one's the most comfortable. I'm gonna go ahead and kind of mount our up here. So pretty easy to get these knockout panels. There's just two push tabs, you just kind of push on the top and bottom here and then that just slides out. So now we'll take our knockout plate and put this in place and just kinda make sure it's nice and straight. Push it in and that looks nice and factory now. Now there's a hole and that's where our light is gonna shine through. So make sure that you have your brake controller in that orientation. And we're just gonna kind of slide this back through here and make sure that clear light is passing through the hole there. We're then gonna take our retainer nut here and we'll just kind of thread this on here just by hand just make sure it's seated properly it should go on fairly easily. And then to snug it down a 12 millimeter socket you can just put that on there and just hand snug it. It doesn't have to get crazy tight here, you know, just a quick hand tightening should be enough. And this is gonna be kind of the ethernet style plug here that's gonna go into the back of our controller. Now you have options. This one has a 90 bend, this one's straight. Looks like it's a pretty clear shot here. But what I'm gonna do is take our 90 and pop this into our controller. So I suggest you don't have to undo the twist ties here on both sides, just enough to get clearance 'cause we're gonna be mounting everything pretty close. So just for cable management sake I'm gonna leave this one on here. And that's snapped in. So now we're left with the connector for this and then our main one. So we'll just grab our main unit and those are gonna just plug in. And already we saw the light just kick on. So that's a great sign that it's gonna be working. We do need to get this mounted in a spot that it's not gonna be moving around. Using g-force, you know, this has to calibrate itself, which it will do while you just normally drive but you don't want to have this moving around. It can alter the braking inputs that it's gonna have. So finding something solid to mount it on with some zip ties is gonna be key. Try not to use any wire loom or anything that might be movable. So I'm gonna find us a nice mounting point and show you how it looks. So I've gone ahead and I got this mounted up. I just ran a zip tie through a loop around this support beam for the dash. And then I attached two zip ties together and did the same thing on the bottom. And so this is a pretty solid mount with just zip ties. The rest of the wiring you are gonna have some excess. So I just kind of bundled mine up, zip tied it and then zip tied it up to some of the factory wiring up here just to kind of keep it out of the way. So now once you have that all in place and you're happy with all your cable management, everything zip tied you can pop this back in place. For the finishing touch, we're gonna take our dial make sure that it's turned all the way counter clockwise and that's gonna put it at zero. So you can grab your knob, look for the zero and then just align it with that light right there. So once you have yours installed if you're immediately hooking up to your trailer once you put your 7-pole on and attach the trailer to it, it's gonna have this blue and green blinking and that's just a calibration to determine where the REDARC is mounted. That's the great part you can mount it in really any direction and it's gonna calibrate just as you use this. Now, to get this to become a solid blue and fully calibrated with your trailer, you're gonna want to hit the brakes. Just kind get up to about 15, 20 miles per hour, hit the brakes, and then you're gonna continuously do that and that's gonna learn to eventually become a solid blue button. At that point it's calibrated. But if you're not hooking up to your trailer right away, not to worry. This will also pick up just normal driving and kind of calibrate itself. So if you plug in your trailer later on it should be a solid blue. So after going around I had to hit the brakes maybe about 10 times and I just kind of watched my light. Once it became solid blue we're good to go. And what's nice too is, with this you can set the gain the blue stays the same, but if you're manually overriding you can see that the color changes as it gets more intense. So obviously 10 is gonna be bright red and then as your brake intensity goes down on the gain it's gonna go to a cool blue. And that was a look and installation of the REDARC Tow-Pro Liberty Brake Controller on a 2023 Toyota 4Runner.

I always recommend being careful when cutting into any grommets as you do not know what may be inside or behind them. I do see that in our Installation video for the Tekonsha P3 Trailer Brake Controller # 90195 they used the same hole to pass the wires through for. I have linked this video near the bottom of the page and you can see the location near the 13:00 mark of the video. There he only slits an opening in the grommet itself and not the rubber tube. As I see you are looking at the...

  • Where to Install Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty Knob on 2022 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk
The Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty # RED24FR would be a great choice for your 2022 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk. There are other options but this brake controller is my personal favorite. It is reliable and stays out of your way with only the knob showing in the cab. You will also need the # RED67FR to plug into your factory tow port for installation. The panel you were looking at is vehicle specific and these aren't required for installation. The only mounting panel for your Jeep is the # 331-TPSI-001...

  • Brake Controller Wiring Harness to Install Redarc Tow-Pro Brake Controller on 2020 Jeep Gladiator
The # RED67FR brake controller wiring harness is compatible with both the # RED44FR Tow-Pro Elite and the # RED24FR Tow-Pro Liberty brake controllers, but the it's not compatible with the Jeep Gladiator. The good news is that we do offer a harness arrangement that would allow either controller to install on your Gladiator. You'll need both the # 3073-P and the # 331-TPH-017 adapter if you go with the Tow-Pro Elite or if you decide that the lower-cost proportional # RED24FR Liberty model...

  • Wiring Harness Needed to Install Tekonsha Brake Controller in 2022 Jeep Cherokee with Tow Package
Since you have the tow package, you'll have an easy install. You'll need the # 3014-P brake controller harness that would plug into the factory tow package connector located behind and to the right of the OBDII connector, as shown in the provided photo. Can I make a suggestion if you don't already have the P3 brake controller? If you'd rather not have a controller mounted to the underside of the dash where you can bang your knee on it when entering and leaving the vehicle, you might...

  • Weight Distribution and Brake Controller For Towing a Travel Trailer With a 2017 Jeep Cherokee
I highly recommend using a Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution System # EQ37060ET when towing a travel trailer with your 2017 Jeep Cherokee. This will not only allow you to level your Jeep reducing the chances of light steering and diminished braking. It will also help to reduce sway at highway speeds. Due to the trailer weighing so much and having a large surface area it could be dangerous to drive without a sway control in strong winds. The Equal-i-zer has sway control built in. You will...

  • Redarc Tow Pro Liberty RED24FR Trailer Brake Controller on 2019 Jeep Cherokee
The Redarc Tow Pro Liberty Brake Controller, part # RED24FR is compatible with either electric or electric over hydraulic brakes, so it'll work just fine with your trailer. Electric over hydraulic brakes use a brake controller, but on the trailer there's a hydraulic pump that operates the brakes. If your Cherokee has the factory 7-way trailer connector, the only other part you'll need is the # RED67FR plug and play harness. The connector is located to the right of the steering wheel...

Thank you for all of that excellent information, I have the perfect solution for you! Since it sounds like you'll be taking your trailer off-road you'll want a brake controller that is flexible in what it can do. Enter the Redarc Tow-Pro Elite # RED44FR.
