CURT Trailer Brake Controller - C88GV

Highlights

  • Custom Fit for Your Vehicle: Works with your vehicle's existing wiring.
  • Smooth, controlled stops: Proportional braking matches trailer braking to your vehicle.
  • Clean, hidden setup: Mounts under the dash to keep the cab uncluttered and knees clear.
  • Phone-based control: Adjust output, sensitivity, and manual override from the OneControl app.
  • Fast, plug-and-play install: Custom harness connects directly to the factory brake port.
  • Tow different trailers easily: Save and switch multiple profiles for trailers with 1–4 axles.

Features to know about

Tows Smooth and Steady: Proportional Braking for 1 to 4 Axles

Uneven or jerky braking can make towing stressful. The Curt Echo under-dash controller uses a built-in 3-axis accelerometer to sense how your tow vehicle is slowing down and applies the trailer brakes in exact proportion. That keeps everything smooth and balanced no matter how hard you stop. It works with trailers that have 1 to 4 axles (8 brake assemblies) and supports electric trailer brakes so your setup stays consistent on every trip.

Keeps the Cab Clean: Hidden Under-Dash Installation

Big brake boxes under the dash get in the way. This one mounts completely out of sight—just 3-3/8" long, 3" wide, and 7/8" thick—so there’s nothing to bump your knees or clutter your interior. The main unit sticks in place with an adhesive pad or zip ties, and the custom harness plugs straight into your factory port. No splicing, no drilling, no bulky hardware hanging down. Once it’s mounted, an LED light confirms when it’s paired and ready.

Controls Everything from Your Phone: Bluetooth + OneControl App

Instead of reaching for buttons under the dash, you manage everything right from your smartphone through Bluetooth. The OneControl app lets you set maximum brake output, fine-tune sensitivity, hit manual override, and even save multiple trailer profiles. You can swap between setups by swiping left or right—perfect if you tow different rigs. The app runs on Apple 5.0+ or Android 4.3+ and stays connected without needing cellular data once paired.

Built for Convenience and Safety: Smart Protection and Simple Feedback

The Echo’s diagnostic LEDs help you troubleshoot at a glance, while built-in reverse polarity and short-circuit protection keep your wiring safe. If Bluetooth ever disconnects, the controller keeps working with the last settings you programmed so braking performance never skips a beat. It pairs with other OneControl systems like True Course sway control or Tire Linc tire monitoring (each sold separately) for an all-in-one towing setup managed from your phone.

Installs Fast with Plug-and-Play Harness: Ready to Tow in Minutes

Getting this controller up and running is quick thanks to the custom plug-in adapter harness designed for direct connection to your vehicle’s brake control port. Just mount the box under the dash, plug it in, pair via Bluetooth, and let it self-calibrate. Once the LED turns green, your trailer brakes are synced and ready to go—no special tools or rewiring required.

Specs

Application

  • Trailers: 1 to 4 axles (8 brake assemblies)
  • Compatible with: Electric trailer brakes

Dimensions

  • Main unit dimensions: 3-3/8" long x 3" wide x 7/8" thick

Smart Device Compatibility

  • Apple OS requirements: 5.0 and newer
  • Android OS requirements: 4.3 and newer

  • Manual Override: This big orange button in the middle of the app is your manual override. Press and hold the button, and the brake controller will smoothly apply the trailer brakes without applying your vehicle's brakes.
  • Brake Output Indicator: The outer ring gives you a visual indicator of how much power is being applied to the trailer brakes. This is determined by your max output setting.
  • Max Output: Braking output is the maximum amount of power that will be applied to your trailer's brakes. How much braking output you need is determined by the weight of your trailer; a heavier trailer will need more power to bring it to a stop.
  • Sensitivity Level: This controls the aggressiveness of your trailer's braking, meaning how quickly the brakes reach the max output level.
  • Vehicle Hazard Lights: If you turn on your vehicle's hazard lights, there's a chance the trailer brakes will pulse on and off as the lights flash. Turn this setting on any time you activate your hazard lights to prevent this problem.

Warranty

  • Brake controller: Limited lifetime
  • Wiring harness: Limited 1-year

Note

  • If Bluetooth connection is lost: The brake controller will continue to function safely, using the most recently programmed settings. This brake controller is not compatible, but will not interfere, with Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.
  • If you don't already have a 7-way plug: Take a look at our exclusive 7- and 4-way brake controller installation kit (ETBC7 - sold separately).

What is Proportional Braking?

Proportional braking means that your trailer brakes mimic your tow vehicle's brakes. If you slam on the brakes in your vehicle, your trailer brakes will activate with the same intensity; if you brake lightly, your trailer brakes lightly too. The trailer's braking is in proportion to your vehicle's braking. This saves wear and tear on the tires and the brakes on both your vehicle and trailer.

I’ve bought several items in the last year from etrailer. The service and duality never disappoint!

by: Ryan 12/24/2022

Shipping was super quick, showed up two days earlier than expected. Easy to order and the website is easy to use.

by: Calin07/13/2022

The instructions are a little confusing. Curt provided an instruction manual that leads you to believe you need additional components to complete the install. It’s a general instruction book and needs to clarify the diagrams aren’t necessarily accurate when buying specific components.

by: Danny08/13/2022

It was a very simple install. Only problem I had was getting my fat fingers in the right position to install the adapter harness into place. Took maybe 3 minutes though. Web site said it wasn't compatible with my truck, so I called. After a short wait Jesse came on. He was extremely patient as I explained my problem and had me fixed up in just a few minutes. The shipment arrived 2 days early wich is rare these days. Very pleased for sure.

by: Jesse 12/18/2023

Worked great. Helped me to trace down a wiring issue with my wiring on the truck and then worked perfectly and controlled some of the heavier loads and was easy to use.

by: Brent12/14/2022

Sherry was extremely friendly and very helpful when I had questions about the correct fit for my truck. She got me the information I needed and took my order and the parts shipped the same day. I was amazed at how fast I got my order.

by: Michael 09/30/2022

Easy to install once you dig out its connector from under the dash. H Ave the unit completely hidden.

by: Tony 01/19/2023

The brake controller video was very helpful. I made my choice, ordered it and received free of confusion. Thanks go to etrailer.

by: John 01/26/2022

Installed the controller under the dash out of the way. Downloading and setting up the app was easy. I have set a profile for my trailer loaded and empty. This is a nice feature.
The app stays open while driving, so the manual brake button is visible, and easy to access, if needed.

by: David04/17/2024

The Curt Echo is now on my Nissan Armada and works perfectly. It was an easy hookup with the supplied harness and does its job.

by: Michael06/26/2025

Don’t even know it’s there, set it and forget it.

by: John08/23/2022

This is the old obsolete model of Curt Echo which has to be installed under the dashboard. The newer version, which attaches to the electrical system in the rear of the vehicle, is superior and now preferred by most trailer owners. The above version should be taken off the catalog.

by: JimB 08/26/2024

This is my first proportional brake controller. Stopping is much smoother without sacrificing safety. Communication by bluetooth makes for a clean installation.

by: Steve H.02/25/2022

This controller took me literally 15 minutes to install with the required pigtail and my Rubicon with factory towing package installed. When I initially downloaded the app and connected, it actuated and locked the brakes. I simple deleted the app and reinstalled and everything worked normal.

by: Chris10/03/2022

Was not aware this device draws on the battery constantly. I don't daily drive my truck and have had to replace the battery twice in one month due to being drained below the point where they could be recharged. $[XX] later and this controller removed, I've not had any problems with the battery

by: Scott09/18/2022

This brake controller has to be unplugged when not in use or it drains the battery in a few days. I had to have a electrical test done in my vehicle ($XXX). The etrailer tech said the test was done incorrectly. The Chevy dealer claims it was accurate. I’m left with a problem.

by: Earl 08/21/2023

Needed a brake controller I could rely on because I was pulling my camper to a site at the top of a 25% grade within a few days. Unit plugged right into the harness for the factory brake controller (with the adapter cable) on my 2014 Ford F-150,and worked perfectly. Bluetooth connectivity works through the app (rather than through the phone's "settings" icon),and connects instantly. I'm very pleased with this product.

by: Patrick03/28/2022

As first time truck and pop-up trailer users, we initially purchased a cheaper brake controller that required drilling the dash. This is a new truck, so we decided to switch and spend more for the Bluetooth. etrailer was easy to work with for a return, and the Bluetooth brake controller is fantastic - so easy to use with our new trailer!

by: Duane06/12/2025

Fit my 2025 Santa Cruz perfectly

by: Chris 08/20/2022

I really wanted a trailer brake controller that I didn’t have to stick an ugly knob/box hanging off my dash. This was my solution and it works perfectly. Plugged right into my Honda Ridgeline existing plug, and easily connected to the app on my phone. Nice setup.

by: Paul08/29/2022

I was looking for a trailer brake controller that did not require a permanent mounting to the dash or center console of my 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk. I initially considered the wireless bluetooth controller from Curt Echo that plugs directly into the 7-pin outlet next to the tow hitch. However, reviews from individuals that tow RV trailers identified that particular option prevents the 12v battery on the trailer from charging off of the TV while connected. This would limit the RV utilization during long trips involving boondocking.
The Curt Echo under-dash controller seems to solve that problem and uses the same user interface as the Curt Echo.
Easy to install and operate; problem solved!

by: Michael 04/05/2023

Easiest install ever !
Plug and play.
App is easy understand and use.
My favorite is with the app and on selected active profile you can see the amount of brake amount is being applied to the trailer when the vehicle brakes are applied. I also install the manual override button. FYI: you don’t need the app on your phone open for the controller or the manual override button to work. Also another nice feature of the manual override button is the size about the size of a quarter, uses a CR2032 battery and the battery level is displayed in the app.

by: James 12/19/2023

This was relatively easy to install under the dash of our 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee, especially since ours has the factory Trailer Tow Package and therefore an existing pigtail connector ready to connect to the brake controller. The Curt wiring adapter made it super easy to connect the Brake Controller to the vehicle's wiring harness. The controller was easy to calibrate and worked seamlessly while we're towing a rented trailer. We used a dedicated (older) cell phone to operate it while we're towing to avoid any potential interference from other apps rather than using our regular phone on which we receive phone calls texts, etc. This was our first time towing a trailer and this easy-to-use Brake Controller helped make us feel safe and comfortable. Highly recommended.

by: Alan03/12/2024

Do not buy either the Curt Under-Dash or plug-in Wireless brake controllers until Lippert fixes the phone app. I’ve used both happily with the old ECHO Smart Control app. I could use the remote manual button with the phone app not even running. As one would reasonably expect the button talked to the controller directly via Bluetooth. The new OneControl Auto app must be running and in the foreground to use the manual remote! And the most recent version of ECHO Smart Control is non-functional, it just tells you to install OneControl Auto.

by: Matthew 11/25/2023

The break controller worked seamlessly. Profiles are easy to set up and it has very reliable Bluetooth connectivity with my phone. Installation was really easy on my Honda Pilot!

  • Wiring Brake Controller to Under Dash Wiring of 2021 Ford Ranger
We had the chance to install a brake controller in a similar Ranger as your 2021 model and when using standard brake controller wiring like with the # C51515 to install the Curt Echo Mobile # C27JR the yellow/orange goes to the black wire, the blue wire is going to go to the blue wire, the white wire is going to go to the white wire, and the violet with white stripe goes to the red wire.

Hello Dan, thanks for reaching out. The best way to add a 7-way and brake controller to your 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe with an aftermarket 4-pin is by using the Universal Installation Kit # ETBC7. This kit contains everything you need to upgrade the 4-flat to a 7-way, including all of the necessary wires for a brake controller. Hello Evan, I can help clear this up. The Curt T-Connector # C68JR that you mentioned is for vehicles already equipped with the factory tow package. Meaning there will be an OEM brake controller plug already present under the dash and the brake controller would simply plug right in. So, if you do have the factory tow package, you can easily install the # C68JR wiring harness. Then for example, you can use a brake controller like the Curt TriFlex # C24VV, along with the Custom Wiring Adapter...

  • Recommended Brake Controller and Weight Distribution Hitch for 2025 Kia Telluride S
Hey David! For a brake controller I recommend the Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty # RED24FR. This brake controller, is simple, reliable, and has an OEM look once installed. Since you have the tow package you can use the # C77BR along with the # 331-TPH-019 for a plug and play installation. When you say a sway bar and leveler I'm assuming you're referring to a weight distribution hitch (WDH). To choose the right hitch we need the tongue weight of your setup, which is typically 10-15% of your loaded...

  • Where is The Connector For Installing a Trailer Brake Controller Located On a 2023 Hyundai Santa Fe?
The location of the connector for connecting the Curt Wiring Adapter # C77BR on your 2023 Hyundai Santa Fe is under the dash to the left of the steering column. The 4-pin connector is cream colored and should be exposed. Be sure to look and feel around the wiring harness as the connector could be on top of the wiring where it is difficult to see. I recommend using the Curt Spectrum Trailer Brake Controller # C51170 as it will allow you to locate the control knob where it is most convenient.

  • Difference Between Curt Echo Mobile and Echo Under Dash Brake Controller
There are a couple key differences between the Curt Echo Mobile part # C51180 and the Echo Under Dash # C27JR with the install harness part # C77BR. If you wanted the absolute easiest install that literally takes seconds go with the Echo Mobile as it just plugs into an active 7-way. That's it's biggest strength. The downside is that it's reception isn't as solid as the other option and it's a little more vulnerable being just plugged in outside of your vehicle. If you don't mind a slightly...

  • Recommended Brake Controller for 2021 Kia Telluride
The easiest brake controller to install is going to be the Curt Echo # C51180 you looked at. All you have to do is plug this into the 7-way on your 2021 Kia Telluride. It is controlled via the app which also acts as the manual override. My personal recommendation is the Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty # RED24FR. The main unit installs behind the dash, with only the knob visible in the cab of your Telluride. This gives it a sleek look that doesn't take up space. It also makes it easy to adjust without...

  • Comparing Curt Echo Mobile and Under-Dash Brake Controllers for 2022 Kia Telluride
Both of the Curt Echo brake controllers are solid options that allow you to control the trailer braking from your smart phone but they have very different installs which leads to slightly different strengths. The wireless part # C51180 has advantage of a slightly easier install with much less wiring since it just plugs into an active 7-way and once synced to a smart phone is ready to tow with.
