Custom 7-Way Connector and Brake Controller for a 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz W/ a Factory 4-Flat

Updated 05/21/2026 | Published 05/19/2026

Question:

Have a 2022 Santa Cruz that I believe has factory tow, but only has a 4 wire plug. What do I need to confirm if I can update to 7 way plug and trailer brake? Also what would you recommend for both trailer brake and 7 way plug option? Thank you!

Great question, JP.

Since you already have a 4-flat connector on your 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz, you can swap it out for the Curt T-Connector # C68JR. The location of the plug for your existing harness is behind the driver-side rear bumper. You can follow the wiring at the back of your existing 4-flat and trace it to where it plugs into your vehicle.

I also included a link to a video that we did so you can get a better look at the plug location, just in case the wiring for your 4-flat is hard to follow under the vehicle. The Santa Cruz that we installed the harness on didn't already have a harness on it, so we show removing a cap that's on the plug.

I tried to find some pictures of how the factory 4-flat connector is mounted on your 2022, but couldn't find any good angles. So just in case, you may need the Curt No-Drill Bracket # C57202 along with the Curt Mounting Bracket for 7-Way Connectors # C67UR to be able to properly mount the Curt harness # C68JR to the hitch.

Now on to brake controllers, there are two different ones that I would recommend to you. One is the Curt Echo Under-Dash Bluetooth Brake Controller # C88GV. Once installed, it's completely hidden. It will connect via Bluetooth to your phone, and you will be able to control the settings through the Curt app. If you ever loose connection or can't use your phone in anyway, even if you unplug the trailer and turn off your vehicle, the controller will always remember it's last known settings. A pretty cool feature that it has if you ask me.

I know not everyone wants to have to use an app to control their brake controller, especially with some state laws, so if that's you, I definitely recommend the Curt Spectrum Brake Controller # C28GV. This controller comes with a knob that will allow you to control and change any boost settings for the controller. The knob can mount anywhere you feel is comfortable for you.

Both of these controllers come with a custom harness, so you can just plug-and-play with zero hardwiring.

Are you gearing up to pick up a new trailer or camper soon?
