Video Transcript for Breaking Down the Grease Cap, 1.988" OD Drive In

Today, we're going to take a look at the trailer hub driving grease caps. These have a 1.988 overall diameter. This part is for a quantity of two of them. These grease caps are used for your trailer hubs. They're commonly used on 3500 pound axles. These are made of a 22 gauge steel construction.

They are a drive-in installation. They have a corrosion resistant zinc plating to them. This is for a quantity of two. The two important measurements will be the flange diameter which is the overall diameter from this edge to this edge. If we put a ruler on that, it's going to come out to about 1.988 inches. The overall height from the bottom to the very top, that's going to be right at 1.156 inches.

That should do it for the review on the trailer hub driving grease caps with the 1.988 overall diameter, and it's for a quantity of two.

  • How to Measure a Trailer Hub or Dust Cap to Find the Right Replacement Dust Cap
You can measure either the outer diameter of the part of the dust cap that fits into the hub OR the inner diameter of the hub where the dust cap goes using calipers such as # PTW80157. Calipers are needed because the measurement has to be as accurate as possible. I also might be able to figure it out based on the outer bearing number which you should be able to see without taking the hub off.

  • Replacement Hub Components for Hub 9606020
While the # L68149 most likely corresponds to the inner bearing number of your hubs. If this is the case, you have either a 3.5k or a 4.4k axle. In order to know absolutely sure, you need to know the corresponding outer bearing number or the inner and outer diameter of the grease seal. You most likely need to wipe away the grease in order to reveal the outer bearing number. In order to accomplish this, I recommend using calipers like the 4" Carbon Fiber Digital Caliper # PTW80157. I...

  • How to Measure a Trailer Hub for the Correct Size Grease Cap for a 1993 Coleman Pop-up Camper
You would need to measure the inside diameter of the hub opening to determine which cap size is needed. You would want to choose a cap whose outside diameter matches the inside diameter of the hub. Some of the most common sizes are 1.980 inch, 1.986 inch, 2.441 inch and 2.717 inch. As you can see the sizes can differ by very small amounts. To measure accurately to two or three decimal places, I'd recommend using a digital caliper like part # PTW80157 so that you can be confident you are...

  • How to Tell if I Have an EZ Grease Hub or a Standard Hub
Thanks for your question, Gordon! Instead of explaining the difference between the two, I included two pictures below. The first one is the EZ grease cap and the second one is the standard grease cap. The EZ grease cap will have a rubber plug that you can remove to be able to get to the zerk fitting that you have on your spindle. Since you have a 3.5k axle, you would want to use EZ grease caps part # RG04-040. The standard caps for the 3.5k are part # RG04-020. You don't have to use...

  • Looking for Grease Cap With OD Slightly Larger than 1.98 Inches
The next largest size is # RG04-040 which has an OD of 1.99 inches. If you can provide me with the reference number from your outer wheel bearing, I'd be happy to check into the availability of a suitable grease cap.

  • 2.24" Grease Cap Replacement
I have a solution for you but we do not have any standard grease caps with a 2.24" diameter like the # RG04-020 . I recommend going with the Bearing Buddy Bearing Protectors # BB2240 which will not only protect your bearings but provide an easy, safe way to monitor and control the level of grease in your axle hub. These are especially helpful on boat trailers, since they seal out all water, dirt and debris and allow for complete submersion. I've attached a brief video review of the Bearing...

  • Replacement Bearing Kit With Bearing Buddy Bearing Protectors To Replace Triton 07994-P Kit

Their kit appears to use the same TRP bearings and races as our kit. Since you are looking to switch to the Bearing Buddy Bearing Protectors # BB1980A-SS you will be able to use them with 2 of our Bearing Kits # BK1-150 and Grease # L11390. • Is there a Bearing Kit for L44643 Bearings that Includes Races, Pin, Dust Cap, and Seal 203025
The bearings we have, # L44643, and the associated race is # L44610. The cotter pin is # 165649. The dust cap associated with hubs that take these bearings is # RG04-020 for a pair. The seal on the other hand is an odd size. There isn't a bearing kit that has the seal that you need and it is an odd size that we do not carry. But it is readily available at auto parts stores. I know that a kit would make things a lot easier but in this situation there isn't a kit that has the seal and dust...

I can recommend the Kodiak Disc Brake Kit # K2HR35DKG to give you a new disc brake setup. Your Tie Down Hub 46845 is only a 9.6" diameter rotor and the 10" is the current size available. Your hub uses a Inner Bearing # L68149, Outer Bearing # L44649 and Grease Seal # 168255TB. The Kodiak Disc Brake Kit # K2HR35DKG will require 2 of the Inner Bearings # L68149, Outer Bearings # L44649 and Grease Seals # 168255TB to mount on your TDE axle. • Replacement Dexter 8-248 Hub, Races, Bearings and Grease Seals For Boat Trailer
The Dexter 8-248 is a 3500 lb idler hub which uses the L44649 outer/L68149 inner bearing and a 10-19 grease seal. The bearings cross reference to the A4 and A17 bearings you mentioned and the 10-19 seal cross references to the 171255 seal. For bearings/races/seals, you'd need the # BK2-100 kit. For a replacement galvanized hub (which is what you'd want to use on a boat trailer), use # AKIHUB-545-35-G-EZ-K. The races are pre-installed, which is a good thing because installing the races...

  • Standard Grease Cap to Replace EZ Lube Cap on 3,500 Trailer Hubs
I don't care for Bearing Buddies honestly as they make it too easy to overfill the hub and cause the grease seal to blow out. A standard grease cap would be your best option. For that you'd just need the part # RG04-020 for your 3,500 EZ lube spindles.

  • Looking For 4 on 4 Hubs For Older Trailer With Short Spindles
Hello Rob, thanks for reaching out. We do offer some 4 on 4 hubs that will fit a 1" spindle, but we do not have anything for a short spindle like you described. A lot of older trailers used shorter spindles, and this design is not obsolete. The only solution for this will be to replace the spindles with the BT8 Spindle for 2,000-lb Trailer Axles # TRU94FR. This is a 1" straight spindle and it is the standard length. You can use that with the Trailer Idler Hub Assembly # AKIHUB-440-2-G-1K...

But there is another possible solution. If you can tell me the diameter of the wheel center pilot hole I can see if center cap is available. • Purpose of Grease Caps and How to Measure to Get Correct Size
The purpose of the grease cap is to protect the bearing and the axle from any dirt getting into the bearing, which would then damage the bearing, hub and axle. So it is a good idea to have caps on your axle. To get the correct size cap you would need to measure the inside diameter of the cap mounting surface on your hub. Then that measurement would match up to the cap size outside diameter. The sizes of caps only vary by a small amount so the measurement has to very accurate. Some of the...
