Axle Dimensions

Hub Face and Spring Center Measurements on Standard Trailer Axle

There are multiple ways to measure the length of an axle beam, but the hub-face-to-hub-face and spring-center-to-spring-center lengths are the most accurate. Hub face (A) refers to the length of the axle measured from the base of one wheel stud to the base of the wheel stud on the opposite side of the axle (when hubs are mounted on the beam).

The spring center (B) is the approximate width of your trailer. It is measured from the center of the spring seat on one side of the axle to the center of the seat on the other. This axle beam comes with the spring seats welded on.

If you are replacing your trailer's axle, you should be able to figure out which type you need by determining your trailer's capacity, the bolt pattern of your wheels, the brake type and the aforementioned lengths.

etrailer Axles

etrailer axles are made of high-strength steel and come with spindles and spring seats welded on. The spring seats are attached to the underside of the axle so that the leaf springs (sold separately) can mount beneath the axle. The result of this underslung design is a trailer that rides a bit lower for quick and easy loading and unloading.

Each axle is manufactured to create a certain camber angle. This ensures that the angle of the wheels is correct for your towing needs. Because the primary concern when towing is maintaining controlled, in-line movement, each axle is made so that your trailer's tires will run along the pavement evenly, with contact across the width of the tread. The result is excellent straight-line acceleration for steady, in-line tracking. You might notice the bend near the center of the axle; this is what ensures the proper camber angle. Having the center ride a bit higher and the sides of the axle bent lower allows the axle to give just enough to compensate for the load.

Thoroughly Tested for Safety

This hub-and-drum assembly meets the requirements for certification by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA). The CSA creates standards, which when complied with ensure a safe and quality product. This assembly underwent extensive testing to measure stopping distances when braking. This assembly has also been tested by QAI Laboratories for braking performance in a complete automotive setup and under real-world conditions to provide the most realistic scenario for the everyday driver.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: 8 on 6-1/2 means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: 5 on 4-1/2 means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance (D) from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Video Transcript for Review of etrailer by AxleTek Trailer Axles - 3,500 lbs 89 Inch Axle with Electric Brakes - e95SR

Hi there. I'm Michael with Today, we're going to take a quick look at this trailer axle with electric brakes. This is going to be a great option to replace your trailer axle on your trailer. This is a round axle with a nice sturdy steel construction. It's got a max weight capacity of 3,500 pounds.

So it will work great for your trailers that have that same weight capacity. To ensure that this is going to be long enough for your trailer, there's a couple of very important measurements. So you can see our spring seats are welded in place here. So from the center of one spring seat to the center of the other spring seat, it's right at 74 inches. If we measure from the hub face from one hub face to the other, it's right at 89 inches.

So, make sure that that's going to work for your trailer. You can see right here in the middle, it might not be too obvious, but there is a slight bend here and that is the camber that is going to ensure that even when our trailer is under load, our tires are going to ride level. They're going to wear evenly. So we're not going to have to worry about being wearing uneven or not having the full grip of our tires. So having that built in camber is going to be really nice, especially for your straight line acceleration and steady controlled towing.

We do have a four inch drop here on our spindles. So that is going to ensure that we have a lower axle beam providing a lower deck height for our trailer, which is also going to mean that it's going to be easier to load and unload our trailer. This is mounted, welded in place using a patented welding process. That's going to prevent spindle failure with 40% stronger spindles. And so that is going to be very sturdy for you.

Our easy lube spindles do have a built in grease zerk here, that you can see on the very end. So it's going to be super easy to keep our system lubricated rather than having to unpack everything and repack your bearings. This is going to allow you to keep everything installed. And your grease cap here does have this removable plug that is going to allow you to easily access that grease zerk while keeping everything installed, put on your grease gun, put some grease in there to make sure that everything is going to be well lubricated. And then you can just put that cap back on there. So really, really simple to keep lubricated with those easy lube spindles there. We do have an under slung design. So our spring seats are going to be welded to the bottom of our axle so that our leaf springs are going to be in that underslung position. Again, that is going to help keep our deck height nice and low for easier loading and unloading. Our electric brakes are going to be extremely easy to install. There's no actuator or hydraulic lines to run, or we do have this double wire on the back side here. That's going to run from one side of the axle to the other side of the axle. So one less wire that we have to run and worry about. So very easy to get that connected in place. All the mounting hardware is included that you're going to need to get the electric brakes installed. And then we have our cast iron hubs here that are going to be very sturdy and durable. Our hub bolts pattern is going to be a 5 on 4 1/2. So it is going to work with wheel sizes that are 13 inches to 15 inches. All the bearings, braces, seals and lug nuts are included with this and your bearings are pre-greased. So you're not going to have to worry about packing your bearings. Just get everything installed, put some more grease in there, and everything is going to work really well for you. It's all right there, ready to be installed. Now this does meet the CSA, QAI, and SAE-N certifications. So you can trust it is a nice high quality product, and it does come with a limited lifetime warranty. So if you we're to ever have any problems with it, you're more than welcome to reach out to us here at We're always happy to work with our customers to make sure that you're getting good quality products and having a good experience. So overall, I think this is going to be a really great axle to replace your axle on your 3,500 pound trailer. As long as those measurements work out for you in that wheel size and everything that you need is going to match up. If not, we do have other options available here at So make sure that you're getting the one that's going to work best for you. That's going to complete our look for today. Again, I'm Michael with Thanks for watching..
