Axle Dimensions

Hub Face and Spring Center Measurements on Standard Trailer Axle

There are multiple ways to measure the length of an axle beam, but the hub-face-to-hub-face and spring-center-to-spring-center lengths are the most accurate. Hub face (A) refers to the length of the axle measured from the base of one wheel stud to the base of the wheel stud on the opposite side of the axle (when hubs are mounted on the beam).

The spring center (B) is the approximate width of your trailer. It is measured from the center of the spring seat on one side of the axle to the center of the seat on the other. This axle beam comes with the spring seats welded on.

If you are replacing your trailer's axle, you should be able to figure out which type you need by determining your trailer's capacity, the bolt pattern of your wheels, the brake type and the aforementioned lengths.

etrailer Axles

etrailer axles are made of high-strength steel and come with spindles and spring seats welded on. The spring seats are attached to the underside of the axle so that the leaf springs (sold separately) can mount beneath the axle. The result of this underslung design is a trailer that rides a bit lower for quick and easy loading and unloading.

Each axle is manufactured to create a certain camber angle. This ensures that the angle of the wheels is correct for your towing needs. Because the primary concern when towing is maintaining controlled, in-line movement, each axle is made so that your trailer's tires will run along the pavement evenly, with contact across the width of the tread. The result is excellent straight-line acceleration for steady, in-line tracking. You might notice the bend near the center of the axle; this is what ensures the proper camber angle. Having the center ride a bit higher and the sides of the axle bent lower allows the axle to give just enough to compensate for the load.

Video Transcript for Review of etrailer by AxleTek Trailer Axles - 3,500 lbs 95 Inch Long Trailer Axle - e83GR

Hi there, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Today, we're gonna take a quick look at this Trailer Axle with the EZ Grease Spindles. This is gonna be a great option for those of you who are needing to replace an axle for your trailer, or if you're building your own trailer, you're wanting a custom suspension system set up, and this is gonna work great for you as well. Now, there are lots of different lengths and weight capacities for axles. We have lots of different options available here at etrailer.com. So I'm gonna go over some of the features of this axle, but first I want to make sure that this is gonna work for your application.

So this is a 2 and 3/8 inch diameter, round steel axle beam. It's got a max weight capacity of 3,500 pounds for a single axle application. So if you've got a single axle trailer, that's got a weight capacity of 3,500 pounds. It should be good there. If you've got a double axle trailer, the weight capacity would go up to 7,000 pounds.

The next consideration you're gonna need to make is going to be the length to ensure that it's gonna work for the width of your trailer. So we've got 2 different ways of measuring the length here. The first is gonna be from our spring seats. So these are welded onto the frame. So that's gonna be a nice static frame of reference to measure from.

So from the center of one spring seat to the center of the other, it's gonna be right at 80 inches. The other measurement that we'll take is from the hub face. So the hubs are not included with this axle, but once you get your hubs mounted in place from the outside edge or a face of one hub to the outside of the other, it's gonna be right at 95 inches. So again, make sure that weight capacity and length will work for your trailer. You can see right here in the middle, we do have a little bit of a bend to our axle, and that's going to be our Camber.

It's gonna ensure that we have an even road to tread contact across the width of your tire to make sure that everything is riding properly, your tires aren't gonna wear unevenly, that sort of thing. So that's gonna be nice to have that built in there. So even under load, everything's gonna be riding correctly. Our spindles here are our EZ Grease Spindles. They are welded in place using a patented welding process that actually allows the spindle to slide over the axle rather than just budding up against it. So it's gonna provide a weld that's about 40% stronger so that you have a greatly reduced chance of spindle failure. It's also gonna make sure that everything is aligning properly for you. You can see this spindle does have a 4 inch drop. That's going to allow for a lowered axle beam, making sure that our deck height is nice and low. So it's gonna be easier for us to load and unload anything that we have in the trailer. Then the EZ Grease name comes from the fact that we have this grease zerk here on the end. Just simply hook up your grease gun, pump some grease in there. It's gonna come out this hole here and fill up that cavity. So rather than having to take everything apart to fill grease up, we'll be able to just kind of pump it in there. That's not going to take the place of your normal maintenance, packing your bearings and that sort of thing from time to time, it's just kind of in between those normal maintenance, making sure that you have plenty of grease in there, everything's gonna be well lubricated for you. This is set up to add brakes. So you can see, we do have our standard 4-hole brake flange here, ready to mount those brakes. It's also pre-wired, it's got a dual wire running from one side of the axle over to the other side. And so if you're installing electric brakes, very easy to get those hooked up, one less wire that you have to run across. And then our spring seats, again, these are welded to the underside of our axle, so that we'll be able to mount our leaf springs in the underslung orientation. Again, allowing for a low ride height, making it easier to load and unload our gear. This axle is CSA, QAI and SAE-N certified. So it's gonna hold up really well. You can trust it meets those quality standards. It'll do a good job for you. So again, if the weight capacity and length work for you, I think this is gonna be a great axle either to replace your current axle or custom set up. It does come with a limited lifetime warranty. So if you we're to have any problems with it, you're more than welcome to reach out to us here at etrailer.com. We're always happy to work with our customers to make sure you're getting good quality products and having a good experience. So if you're needing a different length, different weight capacity, that sort of thing, like I said, we do have lots of other options available for you here at etrailer. That's gonna complete our look for today. Again, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Thanks for watching..

Number one quality parts. Had to replace the axle due to lack of lubrication of the wheel bearings. Love the concept and ease of keeping the wheel bearings supplied with fresh grease on the e-z lube axles.

Review from a similar etrailer Axle Beam in Trailer Axles

Received exactly when expected. I realize they where odd shaped items but I think they could’ve been packaged a little better than plastic wrap. The rubber boot over the spindle was a great touch but the flange bolts were unprotected. Other than packaging I was very pleased with my order and they bolted right up.

  • How to Figure Out Which Trailer Axle Will Fit My Trailer
Though we should have a replacement axle available for you, I was unable to find any info on what came on your 1987 Pacific Trailer, unfortunately. With that being said, you will need to find a few things. First you will need to measure from the center of one spring seat to the center of the other and then from hub face to hub face. This will get you the needed lengths, but you will need a couple more things to find the correct one. Next will be the capacity needed. We have axles rated...

The etrailer Trailer Axle Beam with Easy Grease Spindles # e83GR does have brake flanges which will allow you to add brakes at any time. It does not come with a hub so you can choose a set of idler hubs like the Dexter Trailer Idler Hub Assembly # 84545UC1-EZ which has the more common 5 on 4-1/2" lug pattern, or go ahead and install the brakes and hubs now.
