Axle Dimensions

Hub Face and Spring Center Measurements on Standard Trailer Axle

There are multiple ways to measure the length of an axle beam, but the hub-face-to-hub-face and spring-center-to-spring-center lengths are the most accurate. Hub face (A) refers to the length of the axle measured from the base of one wheel stud to the base of the wheel stud on the opposite side of the axle (when hubs are mounted on the beam).

The spring center (B) is the approximate width of your trailer. It is measured from the center of the spring seat on one side of the axle to the center of the seat on the other. This axle beam comes with the spring seats welded on.

If you are replacing your trailer's axle, you should be able to figure out which type you need by determining your trailer's capacity, the bolt pattern of your wheels, the brake type and the aforementioned lengths.

etrailer Axles

etrailer axles are made of high-strength steel and come with spindles and spring seats welded on. The spring seats are attached to the underside of the axle so that the leaf springs (sold separately) can mount beneath the axle. The result of this underslung design is a trailer that rides a bit lower for quick and easy loading and unloading.

Each axle is manufactured to create a certain camber angle. This ensures that the angle of the wheels is correct for your towing needs. Because the primary concern when towing is maintaining controlled, in-line movement, each axle is made so that your trailer's tires will run along the pavement evenly, with contact across the width of the tread. The result is excellent straight-line acceleration for steady, in-line tracking. You might notice the bend near the center of the axle; this is what ensures the proper camber angle. Having the center ride a bit higher and the sides of the axle bent lower allows the axle to give just enough to compensate for the load.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Even

Thoroughly Tested for Safety

This hub-and-drum assembly meets the requirements for certification by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA). The CSA creates standards, which when complied with ensure a safe and quality product. This assembly underwent extensive testing to measure stopping distances when braking. This assembly has also been tested by QAI Laboratories for braking performance in a complete automotive setup and under real-world conditions to provide the most realistic scenario for the everyday driver.

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: 8 on 6-1/2 means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: 5 on 4-1/2 means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance (D) from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Video Transcript for Review of etrailer by AxleTek Trailer Axles - 3,500 lbs Trailer Axle with Idler Hubs - e97YR

Hi there, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Today, we're gonna take a quick look at this Trailer Axle with Idler Hubs and EZ Grease Spindle. This is gonna be a great option for those of you who are needing to replace an axle on your trailer, or for those of you who are building your own trailer. You're wanting to have a custom suspension system. This is gonna do a great job for you, but of course, we do have lots of different options for axles here at etrailer.com. So I do wanna go over some of the features of this one, but I also want to make sure that this is gonna work for your application.

So this is gonna be a 2 and 3/8 inch diameter, round steel axle beam. It's got a maximum weight capacity of 3,500 pounds. So it is gonna work for your single axle trailers that have a 3,500 pound weight capacity. Or if you have a double axle trailer, it will work for 7,000 pound weight capacity, in that regard. The second most important thing is gonna be to make sure that you know the length of your axle so that it will work with your trailer.

So we have 2 different ways of measuring that, 2 very important measurements. The first is gonna be from our spring seats here, where our leaf springs will mount. These are welded onto the axle. So they're gonna be a static reference point for us to measure from. So from the center of one spring seat to the center of the other, it's gonna be right at 80 inches.

Then our second way of measuring, measuring is gonna be from our hub face. So from the outside flat edge of one hub face to the outside edge of the other, it's gonna be 95 inches. So again, make sure that that's gonna work for your trailer. This does have a little bit of a bend here in the center. You can kind of see that, that's gonna be our camber, so that as we're under load, we're gonna have a nice, even road to tread contact across the full width of our wheels and tires.

So you're not gonna have to worry about uneven wear on your tires. You're gonna get that full tread to road contact to make sure that everything's gonna operate properly. This does have those EZ Grease Spindles that are going to allow us to very easily get this greased up. You can see these are welded in place. These have a 4 inch drop to them. So that's going to prevent or allow us to have a lower deck height, having that lower axle beam there. So that's gonna make it much easier to load and unload our gear. And it is welded to our axle using a patented process. The spindle actually slides over the axle. So rather than your other systems that just kind of butt up to it and get welded in place. This is actually gonna be about 40% stronger weld. So it's gonna help prevent spindle failure. It's also gonna make sure that all the alignment is, everything is properly aligned, when it's put in there. So a nice option there for you or a nice feature for you. With that EZ Grease Spindle there, we are gonna have this cap, you can very easily pop that plug out that will give you access to that grease zerk there. So you can just hook up your grease gun, pump a little grease in there, and it's gonna help fill up that cavity. Now that is not going to replace your regular maintenance of pulling everything apart, checking your bearings, make sure they're properly greased. It's just there to kind of help make sure that in between those regular maintenance checks, you have plenty of a grease in there to keep everything well lubricated. Our cast iron Idler Hubs are gonna be extremely sturdy and durable for us. You can see, we have a 5 on 4 and a half inch bolt pattern there. So these are going to work for your 12, 13 to 15 inch wheels. The hubs come with the bearings, races, seals and lug nuts. And they're also pre-greased. So you're not gonna have to pack those bearings. The first time you get them installed, just put it all together, pump a little extra grease in there to make sure everything's gonna be well lubricated. And you'll be ready to go. So little less mess and hassle for you there, as you're getting it installed. Our brake flanges, I've talked about these before, but these are welded to the bottom of our axle. So it's going to allow us to mount our leaf springs in the underslung orientation. Again, making sure that we have a nice low ride height, so that we can load and unload our gear easier. And you can see, we do have a brake flange here. Obviously, these hubs are not compatible with brakes, but if you wanted to switch these out in the future to add on some brakes, you've got your standard 4-hole brake flange there, and you also have a pre-wired axle here. So if you we're to add on electric brakes, one less wire that you have to run. So it's gonna be kind of convenient, pretty convenient for you there. If you ever we're wanting to add brakes in the future. This is CSA, QAI and SAE-N certified. So if you we're to have any problems with it, you're more than welcome to reach out to us here at etrailer.com with a limited lifetime warranty, but because it meets those sort of quality standards, you can trust it is gonna hold up well and do a good job for you. So if this does meet the weight capacity and the length that you need for your trailer. I think you'll be very happy with this. That's gonna complete our look for today. Again, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Thanks for watching..

Some parts were not as pictured in add. When I call to let them know about a problem, they took care of the problem and had the correct parts to me within two days. Love doing business with a company that cares.

Review from a similar etrailer Axle Beam w Hubs in Trailer Axles

5 stars for looks, apparent quality, and ease of assembly. My only complaint is the axle came with the zert fittings installed on the ends of the axles. This is convenient, but both were non functional upon arrival. One was slightly damaged, and both had the rubber protective material jammed in the grease fitting that I couldn’t remove. I had 2 extra zert fittings in the shop, so quick change and no problem. Maybe these could be shipped uninstalled?

Other than the small, minor complaint, the axle and hubs look great.

Axle seems solid. "Pre-installed" bearings had to be put back in because they slid out easily when installing the hub on the axle. I also had to go out and purchase new cotter pins (both were installed to a point where removing them resulted in one breaking and not trusting the other) and dust caps were heavily dented. That said, axle came 2 days earlier so I got to fish more.

I had to return this product because it would no fit my trailer. My trailer was the issue, not the axle. From what I could see w/o out removing packaging, it looked like a good axle

  • Recommended Front Mount Trailer Hitch for 2008 Toyota Tundra
The Draw-Tite Front Mount Trailer Hitch Receiver part # 65080 is what I recommend for a 2008 Toyota Tundra. It offers a bolt-on fit with no drilling required for installation. It fits both 4x4 and 4x2 models. It will work great for winches, bike racks, snow plows, and many more. It has a 500 lb vertical load rating and 9,000 lb line pull. Please note, the skid shield will need to be removed or modified for re-installation.

  • Recommended Replacement Axle for 3,500 Pound Axle Measuring 95 Inches Hub Face to Hub Face
The correct replacement axle for your trailer is the Dexter Trailer Axle Beam with E-Z Lube Spindles - 95" Long - 3,500 lbs # 7359765. Although this has a spring seat measurement of 80" you can change that. What you will need to do is remove the spring seats on the axle and weld on new ones like the # TRSS238 using your 78" measurement.

This will also help to increase ground clearance as you will not have the axle shaft that runs across the trailer.
