Hi, everybody. Andy here with etrailer. Let's take a real quick look at this Dexter Hydraulic-Free Backing Drum Brake Assembly. Now right off the top, I wanted to let you know that you can get this either as a pair as I have here, or you can either get just the left one, which would be the driver's side, or the right one, which would be the passenger side. So if you need both or if you just need one or the other, I have the appropriate part numbers there for you on your screen. Just take the part number, pop it in the search field of our website.
That will take you to that assembly or assemblies that you're looking for and you can add that to your order. Now this hydraulic trailer brake kit includes, as I mentioned, both the driver's side and the passenger side assemblies, making this a complete replacement for a single 3,500 pound trailer axle. These are designed for use with surge type hydraulic brake actuators. And let me retrieve my ruler here and just confirm some measurements with you. So looking at this one here, looking at the diameter, we're measuring a brake shoe to brake shoe, lining that up there, as I hope you can see.
Let me move my thumb, get the glare off. We are sitting at 10 inches. And then the width of the shoe is going to be two and a quarter inches. So these are 10 inch by two and a quarter inch free backing brakes. And by free backing, we mean that they're not going to, they're going to let you back up, rather, without the brakes grabbing.
So that's going to make it easier to maneuver your trailer in those tight spaces or up driveways. And the way that you can tell at a glance that these are free backing is that our primary shoe here is a D shape. By the way, while we're talking about the primary shoe, let me explain real quick how you can tell which one is which. Now most of them will have a sticker. So with our left hand assembly here, our driver's side assembly here, we have that left hand sticker.
But if you don't have a sticker and you still want to know, if you notice, this end here or this side here has a shorter brake pad and this side here has a longer brake pad. The shorter brake pad is what's called the primary brake pad or the primary brake shoe. And the shorter one always points to the front. So being that this has the brake pad that is shorter, that points to the front, this is going to obviously be for the left hand side or the driver's side. And of course that larger pad is going to point to the back of the trailer. The same with our right hand side or our passenger side. Here is the short pad, and then there is the longer pad. So this one's going to point to the front, so you can see that that's going to mount to the passenger or the right hand side of your trailer. So that's another visual way that you can tell left from right if you don't already know that. So these assemblies are going to fit your standard four bolt brake flanges. They're going to be compatible with trailers using 13, 14, or 15 inch wheels, making installation straightforward. The backing plates are galvanized and the hardware is stainless steel, so that's going to work together to give you excellent corrosion resistance for longer lasting performance. And then the included mounting hardware and adjuster plugs are going to give you everything that you need for installation. But overall, this is going to be a durable, ready to install brake kit that's built to deliver dependable stopping power with the convenience of maintenance friendly rust resistant corrosion.
