Video Transcript for Curt Hitch Ball - Trailer Hitch Ball - 40038 Review

Today were going to take a look at the Curt 2-inch hitch ball, part number 40038. This hitch ball is 2 inches in diameter. It has a shank diameter of 1 inch, and a shank length of 2 inches. The wrench flats, as you can see here and here, are 1 5/8 of an inch apart. This item has a weight capacity of 12,000 pounds. It features fine threads for more holding strength.

It meets US V5 specifications and it is tested for safety. Now were going to bring in our ball mount and our trailer hitch demonstrator to show you how this would be installed. You would just slide the shank into the ball hole, place the washer, the washer and the nut do come with this item, and then finger tighten that, and once youve got that as tight as you can get it by finger tightening, you would get your wrench and tighten it the remainder of the way so you can use it with your trailer coupler and attach your trailer. That should do it for our Curt 2-inch hitch ball, part number 40038.

We got this so we could open our tailgate without having to unhitch the trailer. It works great! Product is good, service was fast... it made our trip to Alaska much happier (our dog needs the tailgate lowered so she can jump in and out for potty breaks). We still need to have the truck and trailer pretty much straight in line with each other... if there is too much angle left or right, we can't fully lower the tailgate. We drive a 2015 Ford F-150. 400541

I already had one of these Curt high load rated 2" balls, and bought 2 more as they are not easy to find. The 1" diamter shank on such a high tow rated ball is not commonly available, ans this works great with my cushioned ball mounts that are 10,ooo# tow rated. E-trailer selection and product quality is top notch, as is their service and shipping time. 36615

Does take the sharp shock out of take off and braking. I am using this ball mount on a surge brake system and seems to work fine. A little expensive but worth it in my opinion for spec weights it can handle and additional feature of shock control. I purchased the 12K lb. Curt ball #40038 to go on mount and they are great match for pulling 6,500 lb. boat and trailer. I have more piece of mind than my previous 5K lb. spec ball and mount. 285117

Nice heavy duty ball. It is rated double the weight of the ball I have been using. I would rated it higher if it was made in USA instead of China. 137759

Seems like a quality piece that was made by someone who cared. The finish was even and consistant. The threads were smooth as silk without the slightest bind as the nut was threaded up the shank by hand. If it holds up in use (resists corrosion) it will be just that much better. The 12,000 lb load capacity should handle the 1,650 lb camper I'll be pulling :-) 93819

I have used the chrome 2” balls in the past. The chrome only lasts so long and then it’s time for a new ball. The service has been excellent in the past. I did purchase a stainless steel ball from etrailer in the past, only to find that it was just a plated ball. Other than the plating disappearing it also gave good service. I basically pull a aluminum snowmobile trailer with 4 wheelers on it. Two good size 4X4’s. Never had any issues with the balls I purchased from etrailer 448203

Perfect - Ball (40038) and mount (AMSC10) were as advertised, well made, and is exactly roght for connecting my Chevy Tahoe and 24 foot boat. Fast shipping. All past orders from you have been excellent in quality, fit, and excellent delivery time. You are my first choice when it comes to trailer and accessory parts.. Your measurement guidance for selecting the right drop or height for the mount was very helpful in being to order the parts and get it right the first time. Thanks - 43219

  • FastWay e2 Weight Distribution System Recommendation for R-Pod Camper with 300 lbs Tongue Weight
  • For your tongue weight of 300 lbs the FastWay E2 Weight Distribution System part # FA92-00-0450 that you referenced would be a great option that would be rated perfectly for it. For a hitch ball you then would want the part # 40038.

It is also a good idea if you are experiencing any sway to help minimize that trailer wander with wind gusts and passing traffic. Your 245 lb dry tongue weight along with 36 gallon fresh water tank will double that weight. The Curt MV Weight Distribution System # C17050 you referenced will help with the distribution and reduce sag but will not help at all with...

These bars will be far too strong for your trailer and could cause a rough ride and even some wheel bounce. I definitely do not recommend them for your trailer. Based on the 13 inches from ground to coupler on your trailer and recent heights from the Crosstrek and it's Impreza brethren, you can use the MaxxTow Adjustable-Height Ball Mount # MT70068. As long as you have a hitch installed on your vehicle like the Draw Tite part # 76112 which is rated for WD use you'd be set. Since you have minimal ground clearance you'll want to go with a trunnion bar weight distribution system since they have superior ground clearance over the round bar setups. • You certainly aren't alone having a bit of trouble backing up a long trailer. Using a front-mounted hitch like your # 65078 is fine, but the Blue Ox adapter, # BX88132, is designed for flat-towing so it isn't going to work for you. What you can do instead is attach a fixed ball mount, and the Draw-Tite # 80248 is going to give you 9-3/4" of rise.
