Video Transcript for All You Need to Know About the Self-Tapping Screw

Hello, everybody. This is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today I'm gonna take a look at this 1/4 inch by 14 by 3/4 inch long unslotted hex drive zinc finish self-drilling screw. This is for a quantity of one. Now if you notice, this is an unslotted hex washer head self-drilling screw, has a zinc coating for corrosion resistance, and this is great for use on grounding wires with a 1/4 inch diameter ring terminal. As we mentioned, the size on this is 1/4 inch by 14 by 3/4 inch long threads.

The overall length of this is 3/4 of an inch. The hex head size on this is 3/8 of an inch, and it is a steel construction with zinc-plated finish, and it is case hardened. But that should do it for the review on this 1/4 inch by 14 by 3/4 inch long unslotted hex drive zinc finish self-drilling screw.

I placed the order over the phone, was expecting a delivery about midweek of the following week, but it arrived over the weekend. This cut my project time down by four days. Thanks etrailer, keep up the good work!

Worked well on my boat trailer for mounting lights on metal frame. If you have never used self tapping metal screws the secret to making the process quick and easy is to drill a pilot hole just slightly smaller in diameter than the screw threads. If your drill bits are not the sharpest in the world another tip is to start with a smaller bit and then use successive larger bits until the hole is slightly smaller than the screw.

After one year of exposure to the elements an being in and out of water at boat ramps, and traveling some fairly rough roads to reach boat ramps, these fasteners are still securely in place.

Exactly what I needed to rewire a 20-year-old trailer that was starting to show it's age with inconsistent lighting performance and continuity issues. In addition to purchasing this lighting harness, I upgraded all my incandescent bulb side markers and taillights with LED units and complete rewired the trailer. etrailer had everything I needed in one place with excellent pricing and superb service. Everything is working great and I love the brightness and visibility of the LED lights.

Good for what it is, but note that these are too short to go through, say, tie-down racks then plywood sidewalls, and into the metal framing of a utility trailer. The picture does not really show the relative length of the threaded part and the drilling part for this length screw.

by:

Worked as expected. Good solid quality. I did drill a small pilot hole in my trailer first to assist the speed of installation.

by:

I am very happy with the quality of the products and the service! Most of all I want to compliment you on the instructional videos included in your websit. They are simple to follow, informative and answered several questions I had about the products and the installation. I will definitely be back when needed and highly recommend etrailer.com!!

  • Installing a Brake Controller in 2001 Toyota Tacoma
Based on my research, the 2001 Toyota Tacoma did not come with a factory trailer connector. However, since you already have a 4-way connector installed on your truck, you will be able to start here for your brake controller installation. I recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Trailer Brake Controller # 90885. This is a proportional brake controller with a digital display. It will level automatically when mounted within a 360-degree vertical range. The brake controller installs in your Tacoma...

  • What Screws Are Needed to Attach a Light to an Aluminum Frame
In order to attach the Command Electronics Dual LED Trailer Tail Light - Stop, Turn, Tail, Backup - Red and Clear Lens # CE86FR to an aluminum surface you will want to use either a stainless steel, aluminum, or zinc plated screw like part # FA1131822. This is going to ensure that you do not have any corrosion problems at the point of contact between the two metals. As aluminum is a rather soft metal, you should not have any issues using self-tapping screws. I also highly recommend you use...

  • Can I Use Existing Switch on Ford F-250 to Install Power On/Off of Custom 3rd Brake Light Camera
Yes. There is no reason that you can't just use the upfitter switch in your Ford F-250 to connect the power of the Custom 3rd Brake Light Camera # 3460006 instead of installing a new switch. I've linked an installation video we did that you can use as a reference, as well.

  • Upgrading Big Tex #35SA Trailer With Brakes
It sounds like your Big Tex trailer did not come with brakes. Based on this, to convert your trailer with no brakes, to adding electric brakes, on your Big Tex 35SA trailer, the first thing you need is a left and right brake kit. You could use the Dexter 23-26-27 kit (includes left and right) which matches your Dexter axle 4” X 4” brake flange. However, for a little more I would recommend Dexter # 23-468-469 Nev-R-Ajust self adjusting brake kit. Most people do not want to have to periodically...

  • Trailer Fender Installation Clearance and Mounting Project
Thanks for the photo. Honestly 5 inches of clearance from the fender to the top of the tire is fine if that is what you desire. We normally recommend 4 inches to allow for the suspension travel whether with leaf springs or torsion axles to allow enough space so you won't have contact between your fender and the tire. Based on your photo it appears there is a bend in the fender, so I'd personally drop the fender down a little more which would relieve that binding. I'd adjust it to...

  • Simple Light Needed for Horse Trailer Tack Room
The easiest thing to use/install is the NightMinder RV Task Light # NM-Motion-011. This is a battery powered light that uses 3 AAA batteries (not included). All you need to do is get rechargeable batteries to avoid purchasing batteries constantly. It would also be good to get at least 6 batteries so you can have some charging while the others are in use. Obviously if you want to use more than one of this light then you'll want to get the appropriate amount of batteries. If you'd like something...

  • How To Properly Ground The Wires On Electric Drum Brakes
Typically the ground wire would be connected to the frame of the trailer using ground screws like # FA1131822 and a ring terminal like part # DW05740-1. Using heat shrink is always recommended to help prevent corrosion. Connecting the ground to the axle technically would work, but the frame will be a much more secure location. You should be able to find a good clean spot on the frame and keep the grounds protected and out of the elements as much as possible.

  • Can Replacement Awning Fabric Be Secured With Screws Instead of Rivets
Yes, you can remove the rivets and use some self tapping screws to secure the # LCV000334398 and complete the installation. If you watch the video attached below starting at the 10 minute mark you will see where they used the # FA1131822 to finish installing the replacement fabric.

  • What Fasteners Should Be Used To Attach the CE Smith Crossmember Pad
I do have an option for you but the cross member in your attached photo appears to be made of steel tubing which means there would be no access inside to attach a rivet for the CE Smith Crossmember Pad part # CE16870. That said, there are plenty of other fasteners you can use to attach these. I recommend standard self-tapping screws like part # FA1131822 as this will be easiest.

  • How Do I Ground The White Wire When Assembling A Malone Kayak Trailer
It is odd that the Malone instructions for the trailer # MPG464-LB do not mention connecting the ground anywhere. On a trailer like this, the white wire can be grounded on the steel frame (usually near the tongue) using a self tapping screw # FA1131822 and a ring terminal # DW05737-1. Preferably an out of the way location where it is out of the elements. Make sure it is grounded to good clean metal, free of any corrosion. A bad ground would certainly explain the issue with your lights.

  • Parts Needed to Install Curt Echo Brake Controller on 2016 Toyota RAV4 with 4-Way Connector
We do recommend using the Upgrade Kit # ETBC7L to make your tow vehicle (2016 Toyota RAV4) 4-Way compatible with the Curt Echo # C51180. With that being said, the Curt Adapter # C57674 you picked up will actually work out great! You just need a few more pieces to finish up the ETBC7L kit: 20' of 12 Gauge Wire - # 12-1-1 40 Amp Circuit Breaker - # 9510 3/8" Ring Terminal - # DW05705-1 2 Count of the 3/16" Ring Terminal - # 44-5310A 3 Count of Self-Tapping Screw - # FA1131822 Zip Tires -...

  • Can the Zinc Self-Tapping Screw Be Used on a Steel Frame
You are correct to a degree. When using the Self-Tapping Screw (Zinc) # FA1131822 to ground to a steel frame, it comes down to what type of steel the frame is constructed of. The Self-Tapping Screw (Zinc) # FA1131822 is ok to be used with galvanized steel and stainless steel. The only steel that could cause issues would be non-galvanized steel.

  • Is There a Replacement Lens for Winnebago 147680-02-01A (Glo-Brite 122Y) Amber Marker Light
I do have an option for you but the Winnebago 147680-02-01A (Glo-Brite 122Y) is discontinued and no longer available. Therefore, you'll have no other option but to replace the light entirely but not to worry, this is actually very simple. I recommend the LED Trailer Clearance or Side Marker Light with Reflex Reflector part # 328-K-51 which is an LED upgrade and installs easily with two wires. Basically, you'll put off the old lens cover for the light you want to replace, remove the screws...

If you are installing a new rail extrusion, the LaSalle Bristol XTRM Butyl Tape - 45' L x 1-1/2" W - Qty 1 # 344270341411-1 and Self-Tapping Screw - 1/4" -14 x 3/4" Long - Zinc # FA1131822 are my recommendation. I'd use 1/4 inch diameter lag bolts whose length is a bit more than the thickness of the floor. How many bolts you need would depend on what you're using the E-track for. I'd probably want a bolt fastening the track about every 12 inches or so, maybe closer together for a heavier load. Use a self tapper like # FA1131822 to attach to the steel floor supports if present.

  • Does The Manager30 Replace Solar Panel Controller
Yes, the The Manager30 Battery Management System with Lithium Profile # RED88FR takes place of the solar controller for your current solar panel system. Solar panel controllers are used to help manage the power coming in from the panels and since The Manager30 does the same thing it actually can't be installed with a solar panel controller. Yes if you used a self-tapping screw like the part # FA1131822 you could use it to ground trailer wiring to a frame. Sometimes aluminum trailer frames aren't quite adequate so you may need to run a jumper wire to the main ground wire of the trailer wiring.

  • What Screws To Use When Installing E-track To the Side Of Aluminum Trailer Frame
Zinc plated screws are going to be the best option for use with aluminum to resist galvanic corrosion. This corrosion you are referring to is from two dissimilar metals reacting so you want to use the most similar metals when installing your E-track to the side wall aluminum frame trailer. It is always safest to add a rubber or sealant to keep the metals as separate as possible even when they are compatible metals. Many times self tapping screws like # FA1131822 are the best solution.
